What I Do Best Isn't Very Nice

We are in the midst of something of a golden age for comic book movies. For decades, comic books have been either ignored outright, or botched horribly as source material for films. Prior to the new millennium, there were basically four or five decent comic book movies to come out: Superman and Superman II, the two Tim Burton-directed Batman films (all four of which hold up with varying success), The Crow, and Blade. I suppose one could throw The Rocketeer in there for kicks, but that’s such an uneven movie that I don’t count it. Regardless, that was basically it for the 22 years between the release of Superman and the year 2000.

In truth, the majority of the truly great comic book movies happened after 2000. Interestingly, the same could be said of the truly awful ones. Mainly because, somewhere in the late 1990s, studios and producers realized that adapting comic book movies was actually a viable moneymaking option, and it didn’t need to only be the big name ones like Superman and Batman. Additionally, with the increase in usage of CGI and advancements in special effects, the prohibitive financial and technological barriers surrounding superhero movies were lessened. As a result, the turn of the century saw a massive increase in the number of comic book movies being produced, and simple mathematics dictates that, well, we ended up with a lot more shitty ones.

And some were really, really shitty. Punch-a-baby shitty.

So, with that bit of unasked-for exposition behind us, let’s get to why we’re here. Given the excitement over the coming of The Avengers and all of the films leading up to it, as well as DC finally getting its act together with the Nolan-directed Batman franchise and our hopes for Green Lantern and now The Flash, I figured we’d take a look back and examine some of the very worst comic book movies of all time.

Important note: This is theatrical releases only, which is why you won’t find The Justice League of America, Return of the Swamp Thing or any of the Bixby/Ferrigno Incredible Hulk movies here. The list is based on a combination of ruined expectations, miscasting, quality vs. budget (which is why Barb Wire isn’t rated lower), and just general overall shittiness.

Final note: Prisco informed me that Jonah Hex belongs on this list. I don’t doubt it, but since I haven’t seen it, I couldn’t decide where to put it. Also, I don’t like to include movies I haven’t seen. That said, Priscuits claims that it was “about Ghost Rider” bad. Yikes. So it gets a (dis)honorable mention.

Here we go:

15. Barb Wire (1996)

A post-apocalyptic Casablanca rip-off starring Pam Anderson. I think that says it all.

14. The Spirit (2008)

Despite an impressive cast, Frank Miller somehow managed to make this one staggeringly boring.

13. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)

Oh, nuclear power. The old faithful enemy of the 80’s. This movie was horrible. Just horrible.

12. Elektra (2005)

Elektra: Assassin is one of the greatest graphic novels of all time. Instead of building off of that, Rob Bowman directed a muddled, PG-13 mess that (based on a script by Mark Steven Johnson, another asshole) focused on some lame-assed Chosen One bullshit and the most boring villains ever. Also, he fucked up the character of Typhoid Mary beyond recognition.

11. Batman Forever (1995)

Chris O’Donnell. Worst casting ever. This one is almost saved by a delightfully manic Riddler, portrayed by Jim Carrey, but in the end, it was destroyed by director Joel Schumacher’s penchant for bright lights and that asshat Akiva Goldmsman’s cluttered, derivative, idiotic script.

10. Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Too many characters. Emo Spidey. The Green Goblin skateboard-thing. A defanged Venom. I never thought I’d be so happy to see Sam Raimi abandon a series.

9. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

Galactus, devourer of worlds, was a big… cloud. Fuck you, Tim Story. This film has literally zero redeeming value.

8. Bulletproof Monk (2003)

More evidence that Chow Yun Fat’s American film career was doomed. Also? Seann William Scott has rarely helped anything. Boring, boring, boring.

7. The Punisher (2004)

You know you’ve made a shit movie when the version starring Dolph Lundgren is superior. Also? This film suffered from a remarkable lack of punishing. Instead, it was filled with high school pranks. The Aggravator would have worked better.

6. Batman and Robin (1997)

Nipples. On the Batsuit. Schumacher, you fucking goon. Eat shit in hell.

5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Fantastic cast that was completely wasted on an epically mishandled film. Made me want to bury the Fox executives in lampreys.

4. Ghost Rider (2007) / Daredevil (2003) (Tie)

Nicolas Cage stuttered his way through Johnny Blaze. Eva Mendes was pretty and dull. Wes Bentley as Emo-Blackheart continued to prove that his performance in American Beauty was a fluke. Mark Steven Johnson continues to make me want to go on a stabbing spree.

More Mark Steven Johnson rapeage. Colin Farrell was mildly amusing as Bullseye, Michael Clark Duncan was decent as Kingpin. The rest of the film was unutterable trash. They should show this film to terrorists to get them to talk.

3. X-Men : The Last Stand (2006)

The crime: Pernicious, relentless and excessive Ratnerfucking. The verdict: Guilty.

2. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

One of the most exciting, exquisite graphic novels ever written. Made into a hamfisted, overblown, bloated, awful, nightmarishly disasterous vomit-bucket of a movie. A film so bad, it motivated Sean Connery to retire from acting.

1. Catwoman (2004)

I honestly think this was simply a fever dream of some sort. No one could deliberately make a movie this bad. The only good thing to come out of this was Halle Berry’s gracious Razzie acceptance. Actual dialogue from this film: As Sharon Stone’s character is about to kill Catwoman: “Game over!” Then Catwoman gets back in the fight, crying, “IT’S OVERTIME!”

Holy shitballs.

Come on TK!

What about the original Captain America movie?

Or The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren?

You sir...disappoint me.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 22, 2010 2:39 PM

The Green Hornet will make this list once it has been released.

Posted by: Rykker at June 22, 2010 2:40 PM

Solid list. Hard to argue with any of these. I might re-arrange some of the order, but nothing drastic.

I like what you did by taking into account expectations and source material. I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at June 22, 2010 2:42 PM

Ratner, may maggots eat his insides. How does one manage to fuck up the Dark Phoenix? No really, it requires superpowers. Same goes for LXG because, wow.
Waaaaait a minute, does Van Helsing count? Because that was a shitstorm of apocalyptic proportions.

Posted by: joker at June 22, 2010 2:44 PM

I remember walking up to the manager at our theatre after witnessing the atrocity of Catoman and asking for our money back. He replied with the "Well, you watched the whole movie..." in which I cried "SUPERPOWER MAKE-UP!".

Christ, that movie was awful.

Posted by: Zerath at June 22, 2010 2:45 PM

you won’t find The Justice League of America

No...you need to give that its own piece.

Please?

Posted by: Jay at June 22, 2010 2:45 PM

To me X-Men 3 and Spiderman 3 should be tied for number one if only because their predecessors were so good. The precipitous drop in quality from the second to third sequel was amazingly bad.

Deist, read the fine print, man:

This is theatrical releases only

Neither of those esteemed films ever made it into theaters.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at June 22, 2010 3:00 PM

Dunno which Captain America you're talking about (I can't see Youtube right now), Deistbrawler, but the 70's Reb Brown movies were TV movies, and the 1990 one was a DTV. So they don't qualify.

The Lundgren Punisher movie is certainly bad. But these are worse.

Posted by: TK at June 22, 2010 3:01 PM

Captain America wasn't played in theaters? Huh. I could have sworn it was. I take it back. You're a schmuck, DB.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at June 22, 2010 3:02 PM

What about Hulk? I remember enjoying it back in '03 but on a repeat viewing I can't even finish it anymore. The newer film had problems but it was miles better.

Posted by: annoyingmouse at June 22, 2010 3:02 PM

And the Reb Brown Capt America was a television movie.

Posted by: Rykker at June 22, 2010 3:02 PM

Bullshit! IMDB shows that the 1990 Captain America was released...in the UK...and grossed $10,173.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 22, 2010 3:03 PM

I need to type faster. OR shut up. That might work even better.

Posted by: Rykker at June 22, 2010 3:03 PM

AND forbiddendonut...The Punisher was released in the UK and Germany.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 22, 2010 3:06 PM

What about the first Fantastic Four movie, released in the early nineties? Even Rise of the Silver Surfer was better than that. Not by much, but better.

Posted by: Aislinn at June 22, 2010 3:08 PM

You take it back, TK! Barb Wire is AWSE.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at June 22, 2010 3:09 PM

TK, you took pretty much every foul thing I have to say about these movies and put them into one article.

For some reason, Daredevil is a guilty pleasure of mine. Maybe it's because I'm in love with Jennifer Garner (in before "She's so boring").

I don't think The Hulk made the list (since someone asked), either, because it's good in the sense that it'll put any fussy toddler or adult with ADHD right to sleep.

Posted by: duckandcover at June 22, 2010 3:10 PM

Aislinn! Do you mean this one?

AND forbiddendonut...The Punisher was released in the UK and Germany.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 22, 2010 3:06 PM

Psh. They release any old garbage in the UK and Germany. I think they just released a home movie I shot back in '95 in Germany.

Get your weak sauce back to Europe.

USA All The Way! Love it or leave it! May The Wings Of Liberty never lose a feather!

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at June 22, 2010 3:11 PM

UKrainians sure are stupid.

Posted by: admin at June 22, 2010 3:12 PM

Yeah, I always thought Barb Wire was a cult-favorite.

I also like Elektra and Daredeveil, mainly because of Jen; not for them being "good" films, so I do understand why they both make the list.

Posted by: Rykker at June 22, 2010 3:15 PM

Oh! What about Tank Girl that one was released in theatres. I checked.

It was even released in the ones in the U.S.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb8OqoMraMI

And are we not counting Judge Dredd because it holds a place in our hearts?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X9FTY3bv6k

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 22, 2010 3:20 PM

Howard the Duck and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III were both awful. Honorable mentions atleast.

Posted by: Danny smooth at June 22, 2010 3:25 PM

I think Catwoman is, indeed, the absolute worst movie I have ever seen. It really just played like one horrible joke that wasn't even funny because it was so painfully embarrassing for everyone involved. It wasn't even funny-bad because it was just painful to watch the actors read those lines. It was pure pain. I couldn't even finish it on a super boring afternoon. Pain beyond endurance.

Posted by: figgy at June 22, 2010 3:26 PM

Spiderman 3 was the worst night of my life. For many reasons, but the primary one was having to sit through several hours of sheer misery. And pay $10 for it. Urgh.

Posted by: esme at June 22, 2010 3:27 PM

I enjoyed Tank Girl. I didn't think it was all that bad.

Based on TK's criteria of "a combination of ruined expectations, miscasting, quality vs. budget, and just general overall shittiness", it is rightfully NOT on this list.

Judge Dredd was pretty awful. Again, based on the criteria described above, I am not sure what film it would knock off the current Top 15.

In sum, yes, there have been many more than 15 horrible comic book movies released (in THE USofA) in the past 20 or so years. Instead of just throwing out additional ones, revise the list yourself! Have a go, young man!

An apt description, figgy. Sadly, it is for these very reasons, that I cannot stop watching it whenever it's on. I just sit there in utter amazement and disbelief that such a movie was ever actually made.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at June 22, 2010 3:30 PM

Proud to say that I willfully avoided 86% of those listed. Not saying which ones I saw.

Constantine was not bad enough to make this list.

Posted by: Rykker at June 22, 2010 3:45 PM

Howard the Duck wasn't just the worst comic book movie of all time - it may be the absolute worst of movie of all time. Period.

Posted by: JH at June 22, 2010 3:45 PM

"They say she jumps around like a cat. What should we call her?" - Really?
But it's Batman and Robin that makes my list of active hatred.
Gitmo didn't have shit that bad.
And they didn't make the inmates pay to watch it.

Posted by: Odnon at June 22, 2010 3:55 PM

I enjoyed Bulletproof Monk (sort of, as an "I'll watch it if it's on" movie, since I can't stand either the male OR female lead - come on, sexed up Russian mafia kid martial arts master who speaks a series of convenient uncommon languages and wears high-fashion clothes to fights? all without her dad or his cadre of guards noticing? someone sure had a big ole sex fantasy there) but also had no idea it was based on anything.

And... okay, I enjoyed The Punisher, I did. A lot.

Posted by: Nat Kittyface at June 22, 2010 3:55 PM

Wow, I forgot about some of these. What a painfully true list.

I didn't HATE Bulletproof Monk. I didn't like it, but it wasn't the worse than Spiderman 3. Plus, I kind of like Sean William Scott. I don't know why. Something about him just lures me in.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 22, 2010 3:59 PM

Constantine was not bad enough to make this list.

Posted by: Rykker at June 22, 2010 3:45 PM

I agree. Taking the character out of London and having Keanu Reeves play him was mind-boggling and bad, but, overall, the movie wasn't horrible. I enjoyed it well enough.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at June 22, 2010 4:08 PM

Mind-bendingly generous to the Spirit. That movie was a piece of shit.

Posted by: T at June 22, 2010 4:20 PM

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at June 22, 2010 4:29 PM

Constantine doesn't belong here, and I'll give you three reasons why:

Rachel Weisz
Peter Stormare
Tilda Swinton

Posted by: The Other Agent Johnson at June 22, 2010 4:29 PM

From Hell. Makes League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen look like Superman 2.

Well, maybe not...but in terms of greatness of comic vs crappyness of movie it's number 1.

Posted by: cassidy at June 22, 2010 4:42 PM

...I liked The Spirit... enough to buy it on DVD. Please don't beat me to death.

Posted by: shwooly at June 22, 2010 4:46 PM

SWINTON!

Judge Dredd is redeemed by Max von Sydow who provided all the best bits in the craptacular Russel Crowe Robin Hood as well.

Posted by: FyreHaar at June 22, 2010 4:48 PM

With the right company, it is possible to be entertained by a few of these. Namely, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Ghost Rider. Not disputing how awful they are, because goddamn they're awful, but while I sat and laughed and yelled at the screen for those, I could not do the same with The Spirit. That shit was on a whole 'nother level of boring-ass shitballs. I had to shut it off, because I couldn't even make a proper joke around it. Ugh. Same goes for Batman Forever. Major vomming.

Posted by: Kalexal at June 22, 2010 4:51 PM

Oh yeah, and put me on the list of supporters for Constantine. Sure, butchery of the source material, but still a fun movie that I enjoy watching.

Posted by: Kalexal at June 22, 2010 4:52 PM

When you said Ghost Rider was #4, I was shocked. I actually didn't know where else there was to go. I had blocked Extraordinary Gentlemen from my mind, thank you very much. And I remember my Catwoman experience. My brother had rented it and was watching it when I walked in. I was 11 fucking years old and I remember thinking it was the worst thing I had ever seen.

Posted by: A-schaef at June 22, 2010 4:52 PM

...and by Batman Forever, I meant Batman and Robin.

Comment fail.

Posted by: Kalexal at June 22, 2010 4:54 PM

Catwoman remains the most fun I've ever had at a movie theater. MST3K thing and you won't be able to stop laughing. I'm proud to see it at number one on this list.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at June 22, 2010 5:01 PM

Pretty good list. However, I feel you cheated by making Daredevil and Ghost Rider a tie. They both deserve their own, solid spots on the list.

I really can't argue with 1, 2 or 3, or their positions, though. Spot on.

Posted by: MM at June 22, 2010 5:24 PM

Oh, and I own Constantine on DVD. You bet your ass I do.

See, the true test for me of these movies is whether they are fun and entertaining when you know nothing whatsoever of their source material. I have read exactly none of the comics or graphic novels on which any of the above are based. But the movies on the list that I have seen (which is most but not all of them) either literally bored me into a coma or made me throw up from laughing at their ridiculousness. And I *like* bad movies. That's how you know these movies really fucking suck.

Posted by: MM at June 22, 2010 5:31 PM

As others have already noted, no clue why Howard the Duck isn't on this list, much less at the top. I remember seeing that in theaters as an impressionable young lad. It was like walking in on your grandparents fucking. Horrifying. People should've seen then that Star Wars was a fluke and George Lucas had no business getting near a movie.

Posted by: space oddity at June 22, 2010 5:42 PM

I'd like to human centipede Ratner for his epic fucking-up of the Dark Phoenix storyline. That bastard ruined my childhood dream of seeing it come to the big screen.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at June 22, 2010 6:38 PM

I got a little depressed realizing I'd seen all the movies on this list and was excited to see them at the time. Re-experiencing the collective awfulness was like having a minor stroke.

Posted by: benjiep at June 22, 2010 7:00 PM

I love Alan Moore , and i love when he out right trashes the movies made from his books , that said i The League is one of my saddest guilty pleasures.

Posted by: gilp at June 22, 2010 8:15 PM

Great list. I named 3 movies off the top of my head when I read the title and two were here.
Too bad it's only theatrical releases because Vampirella, easily ties with Catwoman, easily.
Someone mentioned Van Helsing, yeah, that movie gave me a headache with its stupidity.
I was surprised The Hulk didn't make the list. He fought a cloud at the end of that too.

Posted by: michele is damned tired at June 22, 2010 8:21 PM

What the FUCK kind of list is this??
How is Batman and Robin not top 2?
More importantly, Where the fuck is Judge Dredd and why isnt it number 1?
Granted I have not seen Catwoman but fuck me, Dredds' absence from this list is an abomination.
AN ABOMINATION!
Also the first Fantastic 4 was waaaaaaaayyyy worse than Silver Surfer.
And Dardevil is too high on this list. It is not even in the same ball park of awfulness as Nic Cages' hair and Ghostcocker.

Posted by: supafly at June 22, 2010 8:29 PM

Ratnerfucking aside, was X-Men 3 really that bad? I mean it was ass-terrible, don't get me wrong, but bad enough to be a "worse" movie than some of the others on the list?

At least I got a little Patrick Stewart. I got a little Ian McKellan. And it still had Hugh Jackman. I'm not gay, but Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman is better than 3rd worst.

(note: Wolverine never happened, I don't really know what movie you're referring to. It's the Rocky V of my generation. Never. Happened.)

Posted by: D-Day at June 22, 2010 9:00 PM

Sin City, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Superman 1, Iron Man 1, V for Vendettta.

These are the only good superhero movies ever made.

If you add in nostalgia, I can see passing a Spiderman or X-men movie; but they are mostly impressive fuck-ups. Spiderman was my favorite superhero until those fucking movies came out. Hated them from about 20 mins in. I do allow myself to read the X-men comics still, if only to wipe the miserable waste depowered mutants and registries squirted out. Maybe they have fiteen minutes of cool shit happening in each one, but so does Ang Lee's Hulk for that matter. Incredible Hulk was all right on paper, but i dunno, maybe Hurt quashed the vibrance from it for me. Ratner is best when he is being cheery, and his style just doesn't fly with the opportunity X-men affords. No Jackie Chan in those.

That being said, if you geek out over ______ for reasons inexplicable, I understand. I loved Speed Racer and Watchmen if only for the glitter. Can't say I approve of drawn on abs and amazonian transexual Thierry Henry's tho.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at June 22, 2010 10:18 PM

I also dig Southland Tales as it's more or less a superhero movie about the two prophets who die and resurrect out of the book of Revelation. Where it gets messy is trying to incorporate the three eras (or possibly the fourth era as it is written unknowable and separate until the time it actually happens; and not merely, but coming after the cycle of inveterate human history, depending on who you talk to.) See what I mean?

Posted by: Jackseppelin at June 22, 2010 10:44 PM

B & R #1 with a bullet: Chris "Chicks Dig the Car" O'Donnell; Uma Thurman's terrible vamping; Arnold wearing polar bear slippers and uttering groan-inducing one-liners; inane action set pieces (Bat Ice Skates); and a hamfisted director/writer combo that managed to make George Clooney boring. Damn you, Schumacher/Goldsman!

Posted by: stryker1121 at June 22, 2010 11:23 PM

You did a hell of a job whittling this list to 15 from the 1,855,576,204,203,420 comic book movies that suck. Which is all of them but maybe two.

Posted by: , at June 22, 2010 11:36 PM

D-Day, don't tell anyone, but I don't think X3 really belongs here either. I mean it WAS pretty bad and cheesy, but it was a fun superhero movie. It just destroyed what the other two had done. But it wasn't SO bad on its own. At least not as bad as the first Fantastic Four...or Howard the Duck. Brr.

Posted by: figgy at June 22, 2010 11:40 PM

I would agree that X-Men 3 and Spiderman 3 were such huge disappointments because the previous incarnations were quite good. The expectations were legitimately raised and then the studios took a huge dump on their audience. Its as if the studios knew that it was the last in the series so they didn't have to maintain love, and they had enough love going in that they would make money. If you have an audience that you don't need to keep why bother with things like a good plot?

Anyhow, the reason I wanted to post is because I wanted to throw out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a good, loosely based on comic book, pre 2000 movie. Now I know the term good is subjective, and that TNMT might not be good in any quantifiable way, but I both loved and still love that movie.

Posted by: Morgan LaFai at June 22, 2010 11:44 PM

What is with all the Howard the Duck hate? I LOVE that fucking movie.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 23, 2010 12:08 AM

Hey, THE LEAGUE is not thaaat bad! It has little to do with the comic, I agree, but it is a fun movie!

And where the hell is STEEL on this list?

You see how LEAGUE got a lot better suddenly? Just a matter of perspective! =)

Keep up the good work, people!

Best from Brazil,

Mauricio

Posted by: Mauricio Muniz at June 23, 2010 12:33 AM

I don't see how "Batman Forever" is on here. It is solidly entertaining. I'll give you Chris O'Donnell's shittyness (which is well documented) but Kilmer is great as a sort of wry, witty Batman (better than Keaton). Carrey chews so much scenery that I'm surprised he didn't gain weight, but for some reason it's entertaining as hell. How could you say that the first "Fantastic Four" movie (and Judge Dredd) are better than Kilmer's one and only picture?

Posted by: TheDarkChrisKnight at June 23, 2010 1:53 AM

Howard the Duck has its place. It's so awful it's good again. Leave that one be. Jeez.

And I loved Constantine, so leave that be too. RW in that movie? Shia LeBeouf? Fantastic. Not sure what the casting director expected of Keanu...

This list definitely puts movies into perspective. God knows I've seen a lot of really really bad movies.

And Watchmen was brilliant. They took frames from the novel and made them bigger. The casting couldn't have been better. Script, scenery, costuming. My god. Takes my breath away still.

Posted by: Kelly at June 23, 2010 2:55 AM

Better than all those is this middling fan film, City of Scars, made for $27,000. It's a Batman origins piece. I've watched three minutes and it's way better than anything Joel Schumacher did to the Dark Knight. Might even deserve it's own post. Hint hint. And no, I haven't invested $27,000 recently in a friend's dream.

Right. If I'm somehow going to recoup my costs on this, I may have to provide a link to said film: City of Scars

I really have nothing to do with it, just saw a FB posting about it, thought y'all might be interested. Some guy made their own Batman movie, ferchrissakes!

I own on DVD:

Catwoman
LXG
Ghost Rider
Daredevil
Electra
Bulletproof Monk
The Spirit
and
BarbWire

I bought them all new and I saw all of them in the theater first.

(I also own Howard the Duck,The Punisher (Dolph Lundgren), From Hell, and the 1990 Matt Sallinger Captain America...)

You can suck a bag of dicks if you thought the Punisher was a bad comic book movie...

Seriously, a whole fucking bag

It's weird, I always thought Daredevil was one of the better superhero movies, my theory is that the movie gets shit on a lot just because people have an irrational hatred for Ben Affleck.

Could the script have been better? Maybe, but Ben was solid and so were the rest of the folks in the movie. I really liked it and I don't think it deserves to be on this list. I will go one step further and say that I would put Daredevil on the 15 Best Comic Book Movies Of All Time list.

Tom Jane might have killed his career with Deep Blue Sea, but he fucking buried it with Punisher. I haven't seen Catwoman, and I won't, but Punisher is the worst of the films on this list, and of the others mentioned above, that I've ever seen.

I saw Hulk the same day I saw Pirates of the Caribbean, and I remembered thinking how much more realistic Pirates was.

X-Men 3 and Wolverine were OK, not awful, and there were far worse movies that could have been here. Judge Dredd I'm looking at you! TMNT as well. And lest we forget: Josie and the Pussycats, and Timecop.

Wasn't aware Southland Tales was a comic- it was definitely an odd film. The trailer was beautiful anyways. Not sure what was wrong with From Hell either. As for pre-2000 awesomeness: The Mask, Mystery Men, and Men in Black. Just sayin.

the genre is not old enough for lists like this to be made
It would be like if someone made a list of the best horror movies in the nineteen fifties

Posted by: greg at June 23, 2010 3:34 PM

all of you hating on x-men can go to hell
you make no fucking sense

stop speaking like you know what everyone wants from a movie
you know what I'm talking about

screw the Dark Phoenix

Agree that Constantine doesn't belong on this list. Peter Stormare's devil is fascinatingly creepy.

I have to disagree about Batman Forever. I loved the movie as a kid and seeing it recently, a lot of it holds up. Schumacher does have an obsession with bright colours but the film is still entertaining.

Hi there. :)

Nice article, but I cannot agree with all of your picks for worst movies, but I can agree with most of them. First, I liked Elektra,Ghost Rider,Batman Forever, I liked the " Thomas Jane " Punisher, and I thought that X-Men Origins " Wolverine " was also a decent flick, but the rest of your picks I agree with.

There are far too many movies on this list that need to go. Some were at least attempts to be entertaining. Movies not mention, for no reasons I can think of because they should have been includes:

Flash Gordon
Barbarella
Return of the Swamp Thing
Punisher: War Zone
The Punisher (Lundgren by FAR worse than the Jane version)
The Shadow
Judge Dredd
Any Tales of the Crypt movie (not the TV show)
TMNT II (the first is fun, the third was OK, the 2nd had Vanilla Ice for god's sake)
Supergirl (definitely FAR worse than Catwoman or Elektra)
Sallinger Captain America (how many seconds was he actually in costume anyways? oh, and an Italian Red Skull, ick!)
Crow II (insult to the first)
The two direct to DVD Crow sequels
Steel (how did you miss this one?)
Howard the Duck (defined the term "laid an egg", nuff said)
Timecop II
Return of the Mask
Sheena
Monkeybone
Brenda Starr

All bad, bad, bad movies...
