The 5 People (and Things) on Network TV I Miss the Most Right Now

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (42)

olivia-munn_04.jpg

It’s the end of August, and to be honest, filling a website in late August is like stretching an “SNL” skit into a full-length movie. The television offerings are meager; the films aren’t compelling, and the industry itself has taken the month off. We’ve got little material to work with, folks. Desperate times. I don’t know how many times I can reach in to the site of last resort: Tumblr.

How bad is it? I miss network television. It’s that bad. I even miss bitching about “Fringe” and “Chuck” week after week. I even miss the idea of Olivia Munn as someone I can blame the world’s problems on.

But most of all, I miss:

Penny Caaaaan

Jack Donaghey

Adam Pally

Abed and Troy

Ron Swanson

What about you folks? Any characters or storylines you’re excited to get back to this fall, or are you content with your Instant Netflix and 12 hours of daylight?

Endlessly waiting for Mad Men and Dexter. I've still never jived with the timing of cable TV and prefer good old fashioned network Sept-May programing. Predictable, reliable. This will be an advantage my children have over me, and further proof of how old I am.

Posted by: katy at August 29, 2011 4:52 PM

Right now the wife and I are tearing through Dexter, season 5. On my off hours I'm watching Battlestar Galactica on Netflix (Starbuck, people -- that is all). After those are done I plan on watching Mad Men and Sons of Anarchy (also on Netflix).

And maybe Xena: Warrior Princess.

...

Okay, definately Xena: Warrior Princess.
B-but only because Lucy Lawless is so interesting and talented on Battlestar Galactica and the first half of this sentence is a lie and I just want to watch her kick ass in a chainmail bikini.

So no. I don't miss TV.

Finally! It's been like all day man, and there wasn't a boobies header pic. I thought I might have been on the wrong site.

Posted by: John G. at August 29, 2011 4:56 PM

Hey, Dustin, you know there was a "new" (read: out of sequence) Happy Endings on last week? I was so excited to see it in my DVR queue!

Posted by: Swellegant at August 29, 2011 4:57 PM

You're the only family I need, Jackie D.

Posted by: Martin at August 29, 2011 5:00 PM

All I know is that sometime soon the CW is premiering America's Next Top Model All Star Edition and I am going to watch the shit out of that show.

Posted by: Robert at August 29, 2011 5:14 PM

The Walking Dead. I have Breaking Bad to satiate my storyline hunger and I don't watch network TV so Netflix it is! I'm a little sorry that I don't get FX though. Oh, and I've been watching Battlestar Galactica again and its completion will coincide with the release of Community Season 2 and SOA Season 3. So, I'm good.

Posted by: admin at August 29, 2011 5:23 PM

I recently rewatched season 2 of How I Met Your Mother, and it made me miss all the characters and made me kind of excited for the next season even though it's not that good anymore. But I mean, MARSHALL AND LILY ARE HAVING A BABY. That's got to be adorable.

Posted by: kelsy at August 29, 2011 5:24 PM

I just discovered Mad Men, so the past two weeks I've been GOOD. But oh penny can! We shall be together soon my love. (also, season 2 comes out on dvd tomorrow I think)

Posted by: Julie at August 29, 2011 5:40 PM

I need some Raylan Givens PRONTO.

Posted by: Mel C. at August 29, 2011 6:04 PM

SHERLOCK. Give me the Cumberbatch!!!

Posted by: Vi at August 29, 2011 6:08 PM

I miss Damon Salvatore. And Walter Bishop. And Peter Bishop, just a little. I want to say that I miss Temperance Brennan and Gregory House, but I think I'm over those two. Mostly I miss Damon. Ugh. Is it September yet?

Posted by: Scully at August 29, 2011 6:10 PM

Parks & Rec - Tammy I. I cannot WAIT to see what havoc she wreaks on Ron Swanson and Pawnee.

And yes, more Sherlock! That was a hell of a cliffhanger for Episode 3.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at August 29, 2011 6:14 PM

Beslie. And ANTM.

Posted by: figgy at August 29, 2011 6:23 PM

Working my way through Doctor Who right now (only watched the 1st season before), after which I'm starting with Torchwood.

I'm waiting for Fringe, Supernatural, The Clone Wars and Justified.

Posted by: FabMax at August 29, 2011 6:30 PM

Fringe, Sherlock, and Castle.

Posted by: Adam C at August 29, 2011 6:49 PM

VENTURE BROS!!!

Sorry for yelling, but I miss it that much.

Posted by: Schpida at August 29, 2011 6:55 PM

I haven't been missing much because I'm watching Big Brother three times a week, but I'm soooo ready for the Salvatore brothers. And Fringe.

Posted by: An Atlantan at August 29, 2011 6:58 PM

I can't wait for Game of Thrones to return.

Ditto Walking Dead. I can't wait to see who they cast as Michonne and the Governor.

Park and Recreation. Thank God for reruns and DVRs.

Speaking of which I was able to catch up on the current season of Doctor Who, which admittedly doesn't excite as much as some as the rest of you Pajibans (the last time I was hooked Tom Baker was the Doctor) but I started watching recently and I like it.

I'll miss Hellcats. I loved how they always came up with a reason in each episode for the squad to strip down to there underwear and dance around like strippers. It's all about empowerment.

Posted by: John W at August 29, 2011 7:15 PM

I just finished watching 'The Wire' for the first time. 60 episodes in 60 days.

How should I follow that? How could I follow that?

Posted by: TheOtherGreg at August 29, 2011 7:17 PM

Rick Castle, Castle, Castle, Castle!! Less than three weeks to go, fortunately. :D

Also DOWNTON ABBEY season 2, Sherlock and Mad Men.

Posted by: Linda at August 29, 2011 7:26 PM

Holy bawls. I just watched that penny can clip and...THAT?! That is the show you hold up favorably in comparison to other TV you've arbitrarily decided to hate? That was 20 lbs. of shit in a 2 lb. bag with Michelle Bachmann crazy eyes, that's what that was.

Posted by: JustBill at August 29, 2011 7:47 PM

i just watched the new Fox Fall preview show and i'm waiting to see which shows get sent to the friday night death slot except for a new season of House MD not muche else loooks like it's worth keeping

Posted by: Utah Dynamo at August 29, 2011 7:58 PM

I've been watching Big Brother all summer and now I have eye cancer. Thanks a lot stupid summer TV.

Ron Swanson and Tammy I will be epic. And Raylan Givens desperately lusts for me. He just hasn't met me yet.

Posted by: Alexis at August 29, 2011 7:59 PM

Being Erica--- Erica Strange and Dr. Tom. Oh, and Lenin is such a hottie. Adam too. They are welcome to make a Stinky sandwich any time.

Even though the quality of House scripts has nose-dived, I'd enjoy watching Hugh Laurie pick his nose as Gregory House, so there's that too.

Posted by: Stinky at August 29, 2011 8:11 PM

Tom Colicchio from Top Chef.

Posted by: greer at August 29, 2011 8:12 PM

And oh, of course Game of Thrones. And Downton Abbey!

Posted by: figgy at August 29, 2011 8:48 PM

SHERLOCK. Give me the Cumberbatch!!!

Not till 2012.
To hold us over the bastards at BBC put a bit in the winter trailer.

I need season three of Justified like I need air. Related: Raylan Givens, get out of my dreams and into my pants.

But, seeing as how January is even farther away than September, I'll happily take a side of Castle — I do it for the Fillion and Stana Katic, I won't even pretend to lie — to tide me over till then.

And until Sept. 19, I'll just be over here, mainlining seasons three and four of Mad Men on DVD.

Posted by: sardonicynic at August 29, 2011 9:42 PM

***Unrelated, but does anyone think that the pic of Olivia Munn in the header looks a little bit like Alicia Keys? Maybe it's just me***

And response to "The OtherGreg" I'd say that if you just finished The Wire, you need to follow it up with a comedy. Watching any drama after watching The Wire is going to be a disappointment. I'd say you should watch all of Curb Your Enthusiasm or Arrested Development (assuming you haven't seen either of them).

Posted by: Ty at August 29, 2011 9:55 PM

What is is about Olivia Munn that evokes every snide entertainment site writer to flashback to every girl in high school who ever told them to take their pimply face and braces go the fuck away ?

Oh, The Walking Dead and Dexter, please !!

Posted by: Mr. Stitch at August 29, 2011 10:09 PM

No "House" until fucking OCTOBER?

That's winter.

Posted by: , at August 29, 2011 10:37 PM

Stinky, are you in Canada? The Soap Channel actually shows Being Erica here in the US and I am afraid it will suddenly decide that showing the last season isn't worth it and I will have to find out what happens by other, more nefarious means.

Oh, and Psych Psych Psych Psych Psych. The delay of the summer episodes to October is killing me. Guess I'll just have to watch "Dual Spires" again.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at August 29, 2011 10:53 PM

Related note: Best series to watch reruns of: Parks and Recreation. Even better than the first time around.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at August 29, 2011 11:21 PM

There's going to be an all-star ANTM?! Why am I only finding out about this now? I am so excited that I'm bouncing up and down in my seat.

Posted by: Pat at August 29, 2011 11:37 PM

Olivia Munn would be good as a correspondent on "Troy and Abed in the morning", interviewing the likes of Starburns, Chang, and the Dean.

Posted by: Dave at August 30, 2011 12:12 AM

Well, I've finally gotten around to Deadwood so I'm good.

Posted by: Candy at August 30, 2011 12:17 AM

The Killing!

Naw, just kidding.

But seriously folks, Dexter and Mad Men are the shows whose plotlines I long for the most.

In terms of sheer cuddly snuggles, 30 Rock, Community, and Parks and Rec. Those shows feel like long lost friends.

Posted by: Skyler Durden at August 30, 2011 12:35 AM

still awaiting (in vain) Deadwood: Season 4.

Posted by: harold ballard's ghost at August 30, 2011 7:34 AM

Dave? NO! Just no.

Keep Olivia Munn the hell away from Community - and this is coming from someone who still likes Olivia Munn. It's bad enough that Greendale seems to be getting weighed down by celebrity this season (which scares me a LOT), but we don't need someone who will bring NOTHING to the table, AND fuck up the TaAitM dynamic.

Posted by: Shane at August 30, 2011 7:54 AM

Why don't I watch 30 Rock? I almost coughed out a lung on that clip.

Of course, I am sweatydesperate for the new season of Hawaii 5-O (don't judge! there's hotness!), but also Downton Abbey, Community, and Big Bang. And Spartacus. Tho I expect that will just bum me out until Gannicus drops his loincloth. MMMMmm loincloth...

BUT! I just discovered Damages on Netflix Instant. Spectacular. So I'm good for right now.

Posted by: ChickaBoom! at August 30, 2011 12:30 PM

Three-nineteen, sorry so late in responding. Sadly, I live closer to the equator than Canada. Mr. Stinky knows what I love, so he created a little Being Erica collection of all three seasons for me in the Stream to Me app. I'm too lazy to keep up with TV, so everything I watch is on my iPad, which Mr. Stinky maintains. I'm like a Jabba the Hutt of media consumption lately. (Burping up avi files and yelling, "More!")
