The 10 Funniest Commercials of All Time: Reader Suggestions

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (31)

Earlier this week, we posted AdFreak’s 10 Funniest Commercials of All Time, and while most were in agreement on the Terry Tate commercials and the number one commercial, John West Salmon: Bear, several of our readers had some other hilarious suggestions. I compiled those reader suggestions into this, alternate list of the 10 Funniest Commercials. Note, however, that I tried to limit the list to just one commercial involving a fart and one involving poop, simply to keep the list slightly, but not too much, above the fray.

Canadian Breast Exam (Mrs. Julien)

French Condom Commercial (billdog)

Warmup: Dutch Oven (Lexie)

Sprite: Sun Fizz (Keith)

C&A: Santa Claus

Starbust: Screaming Mime (MelBivDevoe)

Healthy Choice “Customer Service” Commercial (twig)

Washington Mutual: Guess I’m Having Tea (tamatha)

Outpost.com: Wolves (Tracer Bullet)

Banquet Frozen Dinners Commercial (gholson)

Nutrigrain Ad (Nick Obi)

I always loved that one CitiBank commercial with the redneck guy talking in a high-pitched woman's voice about leather bustiers. Here it is:

Cracks me up every time.

YES! The Outpost.com ad lives!

Posted by: The Wanderer at July 1, 2011 11:47 AM

I don't know how the Nutirgrain ad ever made it to air, but I want to see the full-length movie.

Posted by: shawnp at July 1, 2011 11:47 AM

WOOOO! Made the list! After five years (four and a half of lurking) of readership...this is a proud day for me.

Still no love for the Toys R Us Rain Check commercial, the kid sells it.

Completely forgot the Walmart clown ad?

First time I saw it, I keeled over laughing

Posted by: Fredo at July 1, 2011 12:29 PM

Oh, Dustin, I heart you for posting my ad! Yippee! Tea for everyone!

Posted by: tamatha at July 1, 2011 12:34 PM

This one makes me laugh out loud every time. It's a french ad (subtitles) about the March of the Emperors (March of the Penguins in the US) which get confused with a march of Emperor Napoleons by the listener.

My freshman year of college, we used to go around campus quoting that Nutrigrain ad. LOVE IT.

Posted by: KatSings at July 1, 2011 1:05 PM

These were all way funnier than the Tate list. Thanks all!

I love how that Outpost.com ad has an "AOL keyword" at the end. Holy last century, Batman!

Posted by: MM at July 1, 2011 2:43 PM

Damn Smokey! That one should have been up there. I was cryin'. Thanks.

Posted by: elleinad at July 1, 2011 2:55 PM

Who is the guy in the screaming mime ad? I recognize that voice! I can almost place it, but not . . . quite . . .

Posted by: Lauren at July 1, 2011 3:17 PM

It sounds like a mix of Ashton Kutcher and Ty Burrell, and the internet informs me that it's Johnny Knoxville, but that doesn't seem right . . . this is going to drive me crazy!

Posted by: Lauren at July 1, 2011 3:24 PM

Take a bow, Tracer Bullet.

Posted by: AmbroseKalifornia at July 1, 2011 3:32 PM

Every time I watch the mime commercial, I lose it when he yells, "By the way, I AM A MIME!" Every. Single. Time.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 1, 2011 3:44 PM

Nutrigrain wins it all. That was awesome.

My favorite commercial is still a local furniture commercial from Louisiana, Frankie & Johnny's. There's catchphrases, gimmicks, a jig down the aisle, and an awful toupee.

Also, it's a weird but reliable way to find people from SE Louisiana. In Austin, my gf was working at her store and some customer at the register told her mom kind of loudly "Oh, I've got the $50" and 3 people nearby screamed "Let her have it! With noooooo problem!" and fell over laughing. (makes sense if you watch the commercial)

I always liked this Orbit commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nfh92hKLO6c

"Who are you calling a 'Cootie Queen', you lint LICKER?"

Posted by: Craig at July 1, 2011 7:59 PM

Missing the one with the hamsters....same as Outpost, but with a different name...firing hamsters out of cannon?

Posted by: dammitjanet at July 1, 2011 9:20 PM

I always liked the car commercial "Toy Boy"

Libra Invisible

The Nutrigrain ad is funny but it was created on spec and never actually aired, this page quotes a deleted wikipedia entry:

"In 2003, Turnpike Films created a commercial spot for Kellogg's Nutri-Grain cereal bars for their demo reel, directed by Justin Reardon. After it was posted on their website, word-of-mouth made the video clip an internet phenomenon.

"As it was not produced at the request of Kellogg Company, it is considered unofficial. There have been frequent rumors of the commercial airing in the United States, though it is unknown whether any of the video's contributors ever signed a deal with Kellogg."

And if you don't trust a commenter quoting a deleted wiki, there's also this article:

"He was 28, and he held a trendy sort of favor among agents (a favor that became fresh in their minds again when he produced this spec spot for Nutrigrain and hit yet another cultural nerve -- more than 22 million views overall)."

Midnight Spank on G4

That block of television wasn't even worth watching, but the ads killed me.

Posted by: Brent at July 2, 2011 3:21 PM

Well, Christcakes, I was watching the #2 ad and was thinkin' all like, "How could they possibly top that one?" Then I came, and I saw...

Fredo, you definitely get honorable mention.
