Seriously Doppelgangery List: 7 Times Biopic Casting Got It Eerily Right.

By Jodi Clager | Seriously Random Lists | October 22, 2013 | Comments ()

When Hollywood decides to bring the (mostly true but sort of punched up for entertainment value) story of a real person’s life to the screen, the casting can really only go one of two ways. You either get the person’s attractiveness cranked up to 11 when they were really only a 3 at best, or you get it just right and it creeps people right the hell out. These are the Just Right But Creepy times.

Ben Foster as Lance Armstrong

Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln

Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles

Robert Downey Jr. as Charlie Chaplin

Michael Sheen as David Frost

Charlize Theron as Aileen Wournos

Howard Stern as Howard Stern

This is not a picture of Cillian Murphy.
    It's 27-year-old Charlie Chaplin, c.1916.
RDJ is awesome, but this right here is time-traveling evil twin doppelganger stuff.

  • Andrew

    Wait a minute...

  • John W

They're doing a Lance Armstrong movie already? I guess they learned nothing from Fifth Estate.

  • BWeaves

Michael Sheen and Tony Blair, twice.

Jessica Parker as Dolores Fuller in Ed Wood.

  • Arran

I think my mother would look like Chaplin's Little Tramp if you gave her the appropriate moustache and hat.

(Though there's still a resemblance with RDJ even if you remove the accoutrements.)

  • Emm82

This shows how good Aileen Wournos could have looked in a parallel world.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    I like your takeaway.

  • Emm82

    Thanks, I do what I can :)

  • The performance was awesome..

  • Marc Greene

Don't forget John C. Reilly as Dewey Cox

  • BWeaves

Dewey Cox was not a real person.

  • Marc Greene

    my god...

    you are kidding me.

so everything my mother told me about my father is a lie?!!

  • BWeaves

Yes. Should I tell you about your father, now?

  • Marc Greene

Unless his first name is Howard and his last name is Yulikealotofmoneybecauseiamveryrichandnowdead, M.D., I really couldn't care less.

  • George 'The Animal' Steele as Tor Johnson in Ed Wood.

  • Ben Foster - quite exceptional physical mimicry. I hope he's enjoying the hyperbaric chamber at night and all the supplements, whether legal or not, since that's the life of the super elite athlete.

  • e jerry powell

I think all the blood doping is contributing to accelerated aging in Armstrong, too. All that additional oxygen leads to free radicals.

  • Even Stevens

If we're judging purely based on looks, Ashton Kutcher is strikingly similar to Steve Jobs

  • BrokenWindows

Haven't seen the movie, but I have a feeling Noah Wylie in Pirates of Silicon Valley will be the better performance.

  • Guest

If we're talking purely looks here, Ashton Kutcher really is strikingly similar to Steve Jobs

  • Even Stevens

Well this is Disqus just being weird.

  • Wrestling Fan

I dunno, I never really bought Howard as Howard....

  • e jerry powell

    The performance seemed so surface?

  • e jerry powell

Also, I know we love us some Idris here, but let's tell the truth:

  • chanohack

Which of those dudes is Ben Foster?

  • e jerry powell

    The one with TWO balls.

  • Maguita NYC

I laughed so fucking hard at this!

  • e jerry powell

I don't wanna break you, now, so be careful when you do that!

  • Captain_Tuttle

Are we sure Ben Foster has both? How method is he?

  • e jerry powell

    In faith, one never knows...

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Denzel Washington was a dead ringer for Malcolm X.

  • Guest

I still think Fishburne would have been a better fit but Washington was almost perfect in Malcolm X's physicality and speech.

  • Wigamer

Ever see him play Thurgood Marshall? He was PERFECT.

  • Guest

No but I will definitely check it out.

  • Wigamer

I just re-watched the movie and he sounded so much like him, too! Still pissed at the Oscar snub.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Agreed. Washington was magic in that role. It was far better than Training Day.

  • e jerry powell

I'm also willing to call Ms. Blanchett a near-miss.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Blanchett is more idiosyncratically beautiful. But she did a good job.

  • Guest

Phillip Seymour Hoffman / Lester Bangs - Almost Famous

  • Guest

Also Sam Riley / Ian Curtis - Control. DOH!

  • e jerry powell

Who else was gonna play Howard Stern, though?

I was gonna say Hilary Swank in Boy's Don't Cry, but then I went back and looked again.

  • BWeaves

Who else is gonna play Howard Stern?

How about nobody? (as in, I don't need to see that.)

  • e jerry powell

Alas, the damage is already done.

  • Wigamer

Though I refuse to see the movie, I thought these two were pretty stellar.

  • The movie was a fun trifle. Just embrace it...

  • NoPantsMcLane

James Franco in that James Dean TV movie he did.

  • Maguita NYC

Jim Morrison / Val Kilmer - The Doors.

  • e jerry powell

Meg Ryan, on the other hand, had nothing on Pam Morrison.

1974 Jim Morrison makes me WHIMPER.

  • BWeaves

I thought that was Aragorn for a second.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Viggo in A Walk on the Moon....sigh...

  • e jerry powell

Oh, yes, definitely. For a few years, I was so ready to give my life to the Kilmer.

  • Marc Greene

His best role might actually be Dieter Von Cunth.

  • e jerry powell

Quite possibly true; however, my fixation has been on Jim Morrison, who has been dead since the mid-seventies, so the Kilmer would have to suffice as the next-best option.

  • Wigamer

    He approves.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

If nothing else, he looks really happy.

  • e jerry powell

I'm living proof: fried foods tend to do that to people.

  • e jerry powell

The thing is, now the Kilmer looks a lot more like Mark Twain, which is a slightly different hormonal thing happening. Some of the photos of the Twain are stunningly attractive, particularly the shirtless ones.

  • Maguita NYC

What does Chaz Bono have to do with any of this?!

  • Wigamer

There are so many reasons to love that picture.

  • Wigamer

My husband is hot for Charlize. I comfort myself with the fact that, for a very small moment, she looked like Aileen Wournos.

I still haven't seen Lincoln, as it would make uncomfortable to be hot for Lincoln. DDL cannot hide his DDL-ness from me for long.

  • Guest

    And Ricci looked like this:

Theron / Ricci make out fantasy ruined FOREVER.

  • e jerry powell

Oh, darlin', Ricci was a Hollywood upgrade. Meet the real Selby, Tyria Moore.

I did think it was strange that the producers felt comfortable reworking the casting like that, but I guess that's why they changed her girlfriend's name. Clearly Wuoronos was smitten, and I think that should have been enough. I mean, they let Theron look so much like Aileen, but they have to go another way with the romantic interest? To me it doesn't quite make sense, but I guess that's why I'm not in the business.

That artistic license thing that annoys me so often.

  • chanohack

I think it's okay to be hot for Lincoln; he was pretty awesome. But I get you. I've avoid Passion of the Christ for similar reasons.

  • Wigamer

I kind of hero-worship Lincoln, and am full-on hot for DDL, so I'm liable to get all frazzled. Don't know what I'll do if they ever tap Fassbender to play Teddy Roosevelt or something.

  • That last one made me snort in a most unladylike manner. You dork.

  • Pinky McLadybits

    Mission Accomplished!
