G'Bye, "Scrubs"

A Seriously Random Ode / Seth Freilich

Seriously Random Lists | May 8, 2009 | Comments (81)

“Scrubs” has been a phenomenal show over its eight seasons. Not always perfect in the later years, it was still ahead of its time in many ways, particularly in terms of its excellent use of music and its rich blend of comedy and drama. It was also, according to this Slate article, “the most accurate portrayal of the medical profession on TV.”

That last point goes to explain my love for the show. “Scrubs” premiered in the fall of ‘01, right as I was beginning my legal career as a lowely first-year associate, the BigLaw equivalent of being a first year medical intern. And I remember being struck by so many similarities that first year, between what I was going through and what JD, Elliot and Turk were going through. I’d watch an episode and realize I had been feeling the exact same thing (albeit in a less broad, more “real world” way). And because I bonded so closely with the show that first season, it’s always held a special place for me. So Wednesday night made me sad.

Yes, the show may be coming back for a ninth season (and I’m ok with that as long as they bring Eliza Coupe’s Denise/Jo back — it’s a question because Coupe is signed onto another pilot at the moment — because her “walk away dramatically” bit was the comedic highlight of last night’s episode). But it won’t be the same. If we come back next year to primarily focus on new interns, sure, it can still be funny (we hope). But for me, at least, there won’t be the same emotional bond I’ve had with the show, because that’s not where I am in my life anymore. So Wednesday night really felt like a chapter being closed, even if the show’s not done.

To honor the show, here’s a seriously quasi-random list of some of the funniest clips I could find in about ten minutes of browsing YouTube (although I I knew exactly what clips four through one would be).

10. There are tons of clips of Ted’s Band, but this one consistently kills me.

9. Yeah, there’s gonna be a lot of Turk dancing and singing in this list. Cause Turkleton rules.

8. I really loved Heather Graham’s guest run on the show as Molly — of all their great guest stars, she might be my favorite.

7. There have been tons of great musical moments over the years, and the musical episode was a real peach. This was, hands down, the best song from that episode. …Dookie.

6. I could have a whole list just full of Dr. Cox rants, right? This one, which was brought up in the finale, is a Season 1 gem.

5. Of Cox’s many, many rants, this one, which also got called back to on the finale, is arguably his best (and I absolutely love the look of pure dejection on JD’s face).

4. I have no words for this little piece of joy.

3. The song, the dance, the unadulterated joy they’re having. What’s not to love?

2. I love Turk’s rendition of the Sanford & Son theme song, but the real reason I’m including this is because of the second-half of the clip. Turk’s post-arm-wrestling-victory line is probably my favorite sitcom line of all time.

1. Was there any fucking question whatsoever? Of course not, ‘cause he’s so damn talented….

Yes, “Scrubs” was a comedy. But it could bring the drama, too, right? We’ll end with two scenes that still kill me (and no coincidence that both feature Cox, because John C. McGiunley is just a hell of an actor).

Yeah, that “Scrubs” was a good’un….

I share that arm wrestling video with anyone I can. I've seen it about 548 times and I still laugh out loud.
Nothing gets me worse than that smile Dr. Cox gets when he's truly upset about something, and it's all centered around the eyes. Yeah, that guy can act his ass off.
Fuck.

I love when Molly and Elliot explain rap to Turk. HA! I haven't watched the finale yet. Grad school's trying to kill me this week.

DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MESS WITH THE WARRIOR?!?!

One of my all-time favorite TV lines. Ever.

Posted by: TK at May 8, 2009 2:22 PM

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!

Seth I love you so much right now I can't even TELL YOU.

THANK YOU.

I was seriously bawling at the finale. Just oh, man. That was so heartbreaking.

One of my favorite moments? When Turk met Billy Dee Williams. And he screamed like a little girl. I love it when Turk screams.

Posted by: figgy at May 8, 2009 2:29 PM

I've watched Scrubs sporadically over the years, and have always been happy to see it when I've caught it. The other night, I saw the episode where Laverne dies. That just yanked my heart right out of my chest.

I'm sorry I missed the finale, but I also feel like I could use some catching up before seeing that episode.

Posted by: tamatha at May 8, 2009 2:31 PM

I use that "Do you see what you get.." bit on my wife all the time.

She is rarely amused.

Posted by: Brigs at May 8, 2009 2:33 PM

Ah the drama, gets me every single time. Carla's goodbye to Laverne hits me like a truck every time I see it, and I watch seasons of scrubs when I run out of homework to do, so its been a good hundred times.

Posted by: Braski at May 8, 2009 2:33 PM

Great great GREAT finale. I will miss this show so very much. Another saddest moment ever? Carla says goodbye to Laverne. I sob my FACE OFF when Judy Reyes starts to cry. She's phenomenal.

Posted by: Julie at May 8, 2009 2:35 PM

Braski! Almost jinx! :)

Posted by: Julie at May 8, 2009 2:35 PM

Braski . . . Bill Braski? That old sonofabitch?

Posted by: Kballs at May 8, 2009 2:38 PM

seriously... no Colin Hay singing Overkill?
one of the best musical bits EVER, not just for Scrubs

Posted by: Ted at May 8, 2009 2:39 PM

Dammit Seth, making me get all teary-eyed at work with those two sad clips. It makes it worse knowing that the show will never be back the same.

Posted by: Snath at May 8, 2009 2:42 PM

I was like, "That Poison clip better be #1!" And you didn't disappoint!

Posted by: Az at May 8, 2009 2:42 PM

I was pleasantly surprised by the finale. There are no words for how much I love this show - even when it's bad, it's pretty good, and it pulls off something few other shows can: it succeeds, even though it has one of the world's most consistently annoying characters as a lead. Nay, it might even succeed because of it: JD is such an Everyman that he even reflects how utterly awkward and lame most of us are in day-to-day life. And so we still root for him, even when he annoys the shit out of us, because we want to succeed despite our lameness, too.

Also: I would watch a sitcom centered only around Donald Faison dancing to shitty pop music. Every episode. Sign me up.

Posted by: Tammy at May 8, 2009 2:45 PM

I watched the finale two days in a row. The Peter Gabriel song they picked at the end was perfect. I'll miss the show, but they are stopping it at the best time.

The funny scenes were great (I still play the Poison clip for Mrs Rubble to be from time to time) but it was the two sad clips that really hit home with me when I think about this show. It's not just about jokes and Zach Braff mugging, it was a great all around show.

Maybe they will do "Legal Custodians" now with Ted and the Janitor. I doubt it, but Ted was my favorite character and his interaction with the Gooch was great. If you can, look at the episode before the finale when they ask Ted how living with the Gooch has been. The facial expressions and screaming was perfect and I laughed my ass off.

Posted by: Rubble44 at May 8, 2009 2:46 PM

Never watched this show as much as I should have.

Totally bawling like a bitch right now.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at May 8, 2009 2:55 PM

"Why is there a pancake in the silverware drawer?"
"You mean why is there silverware in the pancake drawer! BWAAH!"

***

Also: Another awesome musical moment? When the cast sings "Waiting for my Real Life to Begin". Hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Nothing like that funeral moment, though. I remember watching that episode and just...shattering. That was the moment I knew this show was outstanding. Still kills me. This show had the best soundtrack.

Also-also: Glenn. GLENN?

Posted by: figgy at May 8, 2009 2:58 PM

I thought it was Tony!

How about when JD's father dies? So poignant, and so very funny. Ton Cavanaugh was the PERFECT casting choice for his brother. I love when after he spends the episode in the tub, he tries to get out and falls from his muscles atrophying. Heee.

Posted by: Julie at May 8, 2009 3:01 PM

Hooch *is* crazy!

Posted by: Lainey at May 8, 2009 3:03 PM

I never seem to catch Scrubs when it's on but the few times I have I've loved it. That's why they make DVD's! The Poison clip was brilliant.

Posted by: admin at May 8, 2009 3:04 PM

Speaking of JD's brother in the tub, I love when he's dating Elliot and breaks up with her. "She's gone, she's gone, oh woah woah...."

HAHAHAHA!!

Posted by: Melody at May 8, 2009 3:13 PM

Season One, episode one: Perry asks J.D. a question and the scene cuts to J.D. standing on a darkened road, antlers on his head, headlights of an oncoming car illuminating him. The absurdity was funny enough... but the look on Braff's face was priceless and completely sold the scene.
As I was laughing my ass off, I realized that I was into 'Scrubs' for the long haul and have loved it ever since.
It will be sorely missed but I'm glad that it went out ona high note.

Posted by: Spender at May 8, 2009 3:14 PM

Also: I would watch a sitcom centered only around Donald Faison dancing to shitty pop music. Every episode. Sign me up.
I completely agree, Tammy, but nothing can make me see Next Day Air. le sigh.

Posted by: Patty O'Green at May 8, 2009 3:18 PM

I played the clip of Ted's Band singing the Underdog theme song to the point that my wife threatened me with bodily harm. But I had to quit the show when they let the coin land on its edge as J.D. and Elizabeth Banks were debating an abortion. Fuck that hackneyed bullshit.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at May 8, 2009 3:18 PM

I can't watch the clips at work, but damn sure will when I get home. But, I do have to say probably my all-time favorite "Scrubs" line is at the end of clip #2. My kids and I use that all the time.

DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MESS WITH THE WARRIOR!!!

Not to mention, "Scrubs" is the only reason my kids even know what "Sanford and Son" is.

Oh, and whenever I randomly hear "Poison" on the radio, Turk dances in my head. Naked.

Posted by: dammitjanet at May 8, 2009 3:21 PM

The episode that always makes me laugh is when Turk and the Todd are talking about couples counseling and Todd says, "I don't know how you do it, man. I always feel uncomfortable having sex in front of other people." and Turk says, "That's not couple's counseling." To which Todd, all whiny says, "Then what did I do?" And Turk's response, "YOU DID AMATEUR PORN TODD." Even writing that right now has caused tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

Posted by: lawyergirl06 at May 8, 2009 3:26 PM

Oh, my God! I care so little I almost passed out!

Posted by: figgy at May 8, 2009 3:27 PM

Oh man, such a good show. Missed out on the last couple of seasons, so I guess I'll have to pick up on DVD. My favorite moments (that weren't shown above):

I'm with figgy about the episode that ended with them all singing Coling Hay's "Waiting for my Real Life to Begin."

When Dr. Kelso is drunk at Turk and Carla's wedding and wishing the Turkeltons well, thinking that Turk's name is Turk Turkleton.

Also, the performance of "More than a Feeling" at the end of the air band episode. Awesome.

And almost any of the episodes with Scott Foley. I thought he was great on Scrubs.

Posted by: ami at May 8, 2009 3:36 PM

My roommate and I usually bounce back and forth with the warrior quote and the pancake drawer one, but on another note, the scene when J.D. tells Dr. Cox he's proud of him after he goes into a depressive drinking phase was one of those moments where I just ignore the rest of the episode.

I've watched this show more than any other show of any sort, and it's the only one where I have no singular favorite character, its impossible to choose.

Top 5 are probably (in no particular order):
Turk
Janitor
Dr. Cox
J.D.'s Brother
Jordan

And yes, Bill Braski, that 10 foot tall, 850 pound son of a bitch who sold you into slavery and then fathered 3 beautiful children with your wife.

Posted by: Braski at May 8, 2009 3:40 PM

my fav clip from this show was a jd dream sequence where turk and jd were sitting in a jacuzzi... jd reaches over to turk, pulls off his ear and eats it like a piece of chocolate. It made me laugh to tears then, and i laugh like a buffoon whenever i think of it. Anyone else remember that? know where i can find a clip?

Posted by: todd at May 8, 2009 3:42 PM

HIDE THE CRACKER!!!!

Posted by: dammitjanet at May 8, 2009 3:46 PM

todd, I remember the song "Candy Man" in a dream sequence where JD was thinking about his dream job, and he was a Willy-Wonka type, and Turk was his assistant. Turk was typing a report on the edge of JD's desk, and JD, face covered in all the chocolate he had been eating, reaches over and breaks off Turk's hand and eats it.

Posted by: dammitjanet at May 8, 2009 3:49 PM

I love Jordan. Especially in those rare moments where she's even a little sentimental.

One of my favorite exchanges:

Jordan: You're only invited because for some reason you own your own Spongebob Squarepants costume.
JD: It was a gift!
JD inner dialogue: From ME to ME.

Posted by: Julie at May 8, 2009 3:50 PM

Favorite line:

"You have dreams, right Ted?"

"Just the same one: I hold his head under the water 'til the last bubble goes ... Bloop."

3 seconds later (wistfully) "Bloop"

My favorite scene ALL TIME.

I'm truly going to miss Scrubs.

Posted by: Colin at May 8, 2009 4:05 PM

Absolutely awesome show... hits so many highs and lows all without being corny.

There's no question that Turk's Poison dance had to be number one. Whenever I'm getting ready to go out drinking and need a quick pick me up, or need to get into a dancing mood, I watch that, listen to some old-school Michael Jackson and then I'm good to go!

...plus the song hopefully introduced a new generation to that age-old adage: "never trust a big butt and a smile" :-)

Jordan. Jordan. Jordan. Especially the last ep of season 1 when she 'shakes everything up,' as per Perry's request.

That being said, now that I'm watching them again in reruns I have to say that these are some truly deplorable people - seriously, JD is a complete tool who screws over his friends over and over. I'm just sayin'.

marebear...Yeah, I've related to that one on more than one occasion.

And Braski! Yes! That scene where JD finally goes to visit Dr. Cox kills me every time. And then the little "Thank you" in the bar...absolutely two of my favorite "serious" moments from the show, ever.

Fantastic list, Seth.

Posted by: Cody at May 8, 2009 6:36 PM

I've been waiting for this. This marks the end of an era for me. I just wish my dream of seeing Dr. Cox fight Hugh Jackman had come true. That is the main reason why I'm looking forward to a possible continuation without JD. Oh, and I really missed seeing Michael J. Fox and Brendan Fraser at the end of the finale.

A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned, so I'll just add to the list:

Dr. Cox remembers his wedding to Jordan and their marriage

What has two thumbs and doesn't give a crap?

Allow me to present Man Not Caring!

Janitor gives JD the Evil Eye

Janitor's Bingo the Salt Shaker (and anything to do with the squirrel army)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6fdIlnBF_g

Leonard, half kitten, half monkey!

Don't smother your kids - The More You Know PSA

Anything with Rowdy - especially when JD was placing him in strategic spots so that Elliot woudl turn around and scream.

Posted by: Elfrieda at May 8, 2009 6:38 PM

Yeah, it's a great show, but also time for it to go. Don't hang on like an old guy on a ventilator like "ER" did, go out on a semi-high. I don't want all those people to be out of work, so I'm not wishing for it to go away, but if it ended with last night's episode, I think that'd be cool.

Also, J.D. and Elliott ending up together kinda blows. Can you imagine how annoying they would be as a real-life couple? I couldn't get away from them fast enough.

I think my favorite secondary character is The Todd. If you're gonna stay at El Casa de Todd's, you gotta hammock up.

Jordan is a really close second. "I'm so proud I could poo." I long to one day have an opportunity to use that in a real-world conversation.

Posted by: Slash at May 8, 2009 6:41 PM

I second that any moment with The Todd is gold. One of his best was the Muppet episode when he high-fived Grover. I love Todd. I love Grover. Therefore, I had no complaints.

I also liked the finale. I figured it would be corny and stupid, but it went out in true Scrubs style: heartwarming but funny. I got teary during the finale montage and even if they have yo-yo'd with their relationship, it made sense that JD & Elliot end up together.

Posted by: Brie at May 8, 2009 6:55 PM

I haven't clicked on everyone elses links, but: no love for Ted's Band singing Over The Rainbow? That is such a wonderful scene.

Posted by: Shane at May 8, 2009 6:57 PM

OH, and - Brendan Fraser gets an eternal free pass for those two episodes.

Posted by: Shane at May 8, 2009 6:58 PM

I LOOOOVED the finale. It was excellent. The retrospect was perfect, I was crying and laughing at the same time. My two favorites were the sweaters J.D. and Turk had on for Dr. Cox at Christmas and especially when their kids show them that they are engaged and J.D. passes out. Absolutely brilliant show and it will be missed.

The finale made my heart all warm. I thought it was a great end to the series, and I can't wait to have a dvd box set. Even if I have to make my own.

Thank you for posting the single saddest moment in television, the funeral reveal. I remember when it happened, I was crying and mumbling "That wasn't fair, that was a trick", because I had no idea up until that point what was really happening. No one else combined giggles and heartache like Scrubs.

Eagle!!!!!

Posted by: Lauren at May 8, 2009 10:47 PM

Yes, yes...agree with pretty much all of the above, Scrubs was a spectacular, one of a kind show. I remember, some time ago, when the show wasn't getting much love in some of these posts. I couldn't understand that. I especially loved the way the writers weaved in most of the supporting characters into the series. Great writing, great cast, great guest stars too...I'll miss this show. The series finale really captured the overall tone and feel of the series.

Posted by: The Pink Hulk at May 9, 2009 12:18 AM

I teared up at the finale (I'm not prone to crying at fiction...tearing up means a helluva lot), but in a weird emotionally masochistic way I wish they had incorporated John Ritter into it...they handled it so amazingly at the time and it would have sent me over the edge, which a show that I have loved for so long warranted.

Anywho, you showed Heather Graham, you showed Brendan Fraser, I've brought up John Ritter, but I really do think that Michael J Fox's 2 episode run was some of the finest of the series. He was amazing, he brought out the best of all the regular characters, every moment was tearful and hilarious. Those 2 episodes, shown to a newbie, could explain the brilliance of the series. At any rate, surprised it hasn't been lauded yet.

Posted by: Barabajagalla at May 9, 2009 12:38 AM

Todd - you're right about the spa bit with the ear. It follows on from the Candy man dream sequence. I think it's the end of season 2? The episode with Ryan Reynolds.

Posted by: Carmel at May 9, 2009 1:45 AM

I love this show. I loved it even when it was supposedly bad...I still love Zach Braff regardless of all the haters...I love each character so dearly... I love how they could make you cry from laughter and laugh through your tears...it was amazing. One of a kind. I'll miss it so very much and will gladly buy all the DVDs when they come out.

I might watch next year if they continue on without JD, but not with the same zeal and joy I once did. This Wednesday was the end for me and it was pitch perfect. It doesn't help that I watched it right after finally finding the series finale to Pushing Daisies (Gah! Glutton for punishment, right here). I'll miss it. And thank you for not turning this into a "we hate Zach Braff" post.

The first "drama" clip pretty much sealed the show in for me, I recall sitting there stunned and bawling my eyes out for a good 20 minutes after the show finished. Still surprised I did not see that sneaky little twist.

I don't think I've seen another TV show or film really nail the sincerity of emotions and relationships as well as Scrubs, and that's what I love most about it.

I love Scrubs. It brings the funny ("Touché, magic hallway...) and the real (a few weeks after we started dating, I sent my boyfriend this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBWG0rt3_xw to sum up why I may occasional seem like a slightly odd person), and crucially, also the sad - on top of what's already been mentioned, gotta throw in Mrs. Wilks catching a fatal infection from Cabbage and the 'Broadway' ending where everyone sings "Waiting For My Real Life To Begin". I'll really miss it :(

I love Faison and Reyes, individually, but especially together. Turk and Carla are about the best couple I've EVER seen on TV. And they are both incredible actors.

It's so sad to think of them not working together again. It would be like a divorce, where there was nothing wrong with the marriage.

Carla and Turk forever!

I've watched the "Warrior" quote probably hundreds of times, and it still makes me tear up with laughter. Though besides that, I think my other favorite line belongs to Kelso: "You've bested me again, you little chocolate bitch."

Or perhaps Ted. Or Todd. You know what? I'll re-watch them all now and get back to you.

*sniff* *Giggle* thanks for reminding me how funny and sad and brilliant this show used to be. I haven't watched it in a while, because the weaker episodes started to out number the good ones and frankly I gave up, but I can still watch the earlier seasons and laugh, or cry.
Brendan Frasier was one of the best characters and the death of Ben was one of the most unexpected and saddest things i've ever seen on any television show, let alone a medical one where people tend to die fairly often. I think it's a toss up between that and the organ recipient deaths being the saddest scene on the show, both ae excellent specifically for Mcginley's performances, but I think the second one just about clinches it with Carla's quivering bottom lip even as she's respirating the dying man, the fact she's already so emotional just gets me sniffling all the time, then his tantrum...aaaw...man...*sob*

My favorite guest star has to be Nicole Sullivan (Jill). Heather Graham was kind of annoying and she represents what I think bothered me the most in this good show: people hanging out in the hospital not doing their job (especially when they don't even work there).
I didn't like also dr. Cox constantly annoyed by people but seeking for attention anytime they're in their own business.
My sister and I loved the "Co-chief" episode.
yes, it really gave us good times.

That one clip with that song from The Fray always gets me, it's one of my favorite moments of the show. Even though it has The Fray...
