Five Guys It May Pain You to Realize Are Republican

A Seriously Random List XXXI / Dustin Rowles

Seriously Random Lists | December 3, 2008 | Comments (212)

I just stumbled upon this Seriously Random List while trying to put together another, different one, and it nearly knocked me on my ass, for some reason, to learn that Sam Raimi was a Republican. So, I did a little more research and, no offense to our Republican readers, found four other guys who I wish batted for our team, politically speaking.

5. Dennis Hopper — Self confessed (hell, he was in An American Carol). It’s not that surprising, I suppose, but come on: He directed Easy Rider. It stings a little.

4. Vince Vaughn — Also self-confessed Republican, though I doubt he’s a Bush Republican. It’s the midwestern upbringing, I presume. This one hurt a lot more about two years ago. Now, I’m starting to let it go.

3. Denzel Washington — Washington is an Obama Republican; he donated the max to Obama, but he’s still a hardcore Christian conservative and had even been discussed, hypothetically, as someone to put on the Republican ticket this year. He doesn’t often reveal his politics, but a few years ago, he revealed himself on “The Today Show.”

2. Dwayne Johnson — Spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2000. Shame, too, because she’s so charming and likable. And Republican. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

1. Sam Raimi — Ouch. The director of the Evil Dead and Spider-Man trilogies actually donated money to the Bush/Cheney campaigns in 2000 and 2004. That one stings the most.

Not groovy, Sam Raimi. Not groovy.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 1:54 PM

even though it's used correctly, i'm still confused about the idea of an "obama republican." how can one agree with obama and still feel like their alignment with the republican party is a good idea?
that being said -- yeah. ouch. this stings.

Posted by: kelsi at December 3, 2008 1:56 PM

Dwayne, why you gotta do me like you do?

Posted by: Monica at December 3, 2008 1:57 PM

And this is why the saying is "ignorance is bliss."

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 1:58 PM

Whatever.

Posted by: joe at December 3, 2008 2:01 PM

Oh, I remember in 2000 reading "George Bush can smell what the Rock is cookin'" so that one I knew about.

Dennis has done the Bush/McCain distancing thing though, along with......everybody?

Posted by: Jay at December 3, 2008 2:03 PM

I'm more interested in which actors are spelunkers. Or baby eaters.

Posted by: Julie at December 3, 2008 2:04 PM

I love it that the Dwayne "the Rock" is referred to as a "she." I was so confused I actually had to google

If it were a typo, it's a most gay-Republican-truth-telling-typo of them all.

Posted by: Yocean at December 3, 2008 2:06 PM

Yeah Dennis Hopper defended Obama after meeting him, and rejected the whole McCain/Palin ticket due to their attacks on what he saw as a very good guy.

Posted by: puppetDoug at December 3, 2008 2:09 PM

So, the witch hunt begins. Obviously anyone who is not rank and file Obamagasmic is either a drooling, knuckle dragging, troglodyte, or pure eee-vil.
We must NAME THEM!
Have fun with that McCarthy.

Posted by: Basil at December 3, 2008 2:09 PM

Dustin, who cares.

Seriously, who the fuck cares about what party you are, parties make no difference in who you are. My god, you can be stupid. You may be one of the best critics on the internet, but I can't abide by your support of that piece of condenced cunt fluid Keith Olbermann, and some of your other stupid statements.

Posted by: George at December 3, 2008 2:11 PM

Please, do not accuse liberals of McCarthyism for wishing people were not Republican, oh Lords of Irony that Do Not Get Irony. Everything is not an attack on your ideals. Don't you wish some of your favorite stars were Republican? Points for troglodyte, though.

Posted by: puppetDoug at December 3, 2008 2:12 PM

Sam Raimi! Bummer. I had no idea about that one. And you're sure we can't rule out some kind out some kind of demonic possession?

And wait, what about Ted Raimi? Come one Joxer don't let me down.

Posted by: SPL at December 3, 2008 2:12 PM

Dems? Reps? Who cares? What I really want to know is "boxers" or "briefs". Oprah did not follow up on this.

Posted by: JapJay at December 3, 2008 2:13 PM

1. Sam Raimi -- Ouch. The director of the Evil Dead and Spider-Man trilogies actually donated money to the Bush/Cheney campaigns in 2000 and 2004. That one stings the most.

This explains why Spider Man 3 was so bad, and why 4 and 5 are being made...the man clearly agrees with an ideology of torture.

Posted by: Mike R. at December 3, 2008 2:16 PM

Basil and George - You're welcome to go hang out at other sites so that our liberal cooties don't rub off on you.

George - if you think that party affiliation doesn't matter, well, you are wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Doesn't mean we can't agree to disagree, or even be friends, but it says a lot about a person.

Basil - sounds like you're the one who thinks there's something shameful in being Republican...

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 2:17 PM

Monica - Do you really care what Dwayne's political affiliation is? Don't you mainly just want to be sexed up by him and not actually have heart-to-hearts?

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 2:20 PM

Allow me Dustin, first George do not mind using that vile and despicable word cunt, which means he hates women. Secondly, he hates Olbermann, which means he is either Independent or Republican. Thirdly, he has a love/hate relationship with you concerning your work as a critic. All of those factors lead me to the conclusion that George is gay and is finally coming to that conclusion, and is contemplating coming out over Christmas. Am I right George?

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 2:28 PM

I've always said that The Rock would be the perfect man if he weren't Republican.

But Denzel? You break my heart, sir. You break my heart.

Posted by: wsapnin at December 3, 2008 2:41 PM

but it [being a Republican] says a lot about a person.

Really, tamantha? It says which way a person may or may not vote (but not even conclusively), but it doesn't say "a lot" at least not any more than declaring to be a Democrat.

It always weirds me out that Pajiba tries to peg itself as the epitome of acceptance (and most times are), but any time someone is outed as a Republican, you're immediately disappointed in him or her.

You assume these people are ignorant and abandoning you without even have a conversation one way or the other about it. And this coming from a girl who hopes the GOP will die out sooner rather than later so a more progressive conservative group can step in to take its place (since, apparently, there's no room for third parties in our government).

Eh, I give up.

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 2:46 PM

George, I think you mean condensed. And who knew there was such a thing - do they sell it in cans with which to make sexually attractive pumpkin pie?

Posted by: Cindy at December 3, 2008 2:46 PM

Damn, Denzel.

I no longer want many of your beautiful chocolate babies. It's over.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2008 2:47 PM

Sam Raimi stings a bit, but if you tell me Bruce Campbell is a Republican, my heart will get a little blacker and I might cry a little tear.

Posted by: MM at December 3, 2008 2:47 PM

Shit! I'm totally late for work.

Posted by: bev rage at December 3, 2008 2:48 PM

Heh. My prediction: This will be the most interesting (read:obnoxious) thread of the day.

I am now kicking my feet up on my desk with my refresh button at the ready.

GO!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 3, 2008 2:50 PM

Cindy I would love one of those pies. Yes, in that way.

Posted by: admin at December 3, 2008 2:51 PM

(everyone knows Republicans eat babies and enjoy kicking puppies)

Pajiba is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell out.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2008 2:52 PM

Sam Raimi?...If Spiderman 3 hadn't been so crappy I would be feeling worse; now if you tell me Bruce Campbell is racist you might as well shoot me in the head.

Posted by: Radlum at December 3, 2008 2:53 PM

Anna vB it's already obnoxious thanks to my total destruction of grammar in my last comment. Me talk pretty one day.

Can't we do a list of Libertarians? Or Green Party Folks?

Can't we all just get along?!?!!!?? I thought all of this was over when we all parted (amicably, I might add) on the Obama victory comment thread. Yeesh.

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 2:53 PM

I don't see bucdaddy on your list.

Posted by: bucdaddy at December 3, 2008 2:54 PM

Pajiba is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell out.

Posted by: figgy

Arrrggghhhh! Because you quoted The Office, figgy, I'm inclined to forgive you... THIS TIME! Muahahahaha

And also, hugs to bucdaddy. You make my conservative leaning heart swell with pride.

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 2:57 PM

Ahahahahahaha. WIN.

Though to be perfectly honest, I really don't give a damn about a celebrity's politics. I think both sides are equally insane.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2008 3:00 PM

I honestly don't care if someone is Republican/Democrat/Libertarian/Tastycrat, etc. I'm pretty liberal, as are my parents, siblings, and most of my friends. My extended family are almost all hardcore conservatives, and my mother's boyfriend, one of my best friends and my brother-in-law voted for Bush in both elections. I love them, we just happen to disagree on a lot of issues. We'll argue, sometimes vehemently (oh man it got ugly when my friend voted for Santorum in '06), but basic political views haven't changed how I feel about them.

Meh meh meh.

Posted by: Julie at December 3, 2008 3:00 PM

I'm what passes for a Republican in Canada, so by American standards I must be a moderate communist.

Posted by: admin at December 3, 2008 3:01 PM

Oh, yeah, who am I kidding?

I'd still totally have Denzel's babies.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2008 3:01 PM

Deep dish I assume, admin?

Posted by: Cindy at December 3, 2008 3:03 PM

Kayanne - yep it does. It says something about a person's political ideology and what they value. And by "it" in my original post, I clearly wrote political affiliation--so that means Republican or Democrat (or the numerous other political parties that are out there). If one bothers to affiliate oneself with a political party, then one is definitely making a statement about where one sees oneself in the world.

Oh, and there is no "n" in my first name. If you are going to call me out, at least spell my name correctly. When in doubt, copy and paste.

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 3:04 PM

Haha... political threads wouldn't be the same without all the defensive Republicans. Personally, I don't mind the Republican party as a concept - the libertarian wing of it is pretty reasonable, and if any of them actually ran for office, I might vote for one. Straight up conservatives (of the marriage-equality-opposing, social conservative variety) are pretty much everything that's wrong with the world, though.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 3:08 PM

*sigh* Fine. You win, yadda yadda yadda, here's your gold star!

I lose two points for technical fouls (of the grammar and name-spelling variety) and the whole world learns I suck.

My apologies to tamatha. And I didn't even ctrl+v it! I may have botched my routine, but I sure as hell stuck the landing.

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 3:12 PM

I also have a revelation- one so shocking and huge that Pajiba may never be the same.

I Dylan Jones, am a Republican.

Drink it in world.

Posted by: dylanj at December 3, 2008 3:13 PM

This post reminds me of that scene from Scrubs, in the lunch room, when Elliot was outed as a closet Republican, and she decided to stand up and embrace it, and then she and her hunky intern (can't remember his name) found out they were both Republicans and had hot Reaganite sex in the supply closet.

Maybe similar pairings will be made today???

Posted by: Jenn at December 3, 2008 3:13 PM

No Cindy I prefer it in a normal pan so you get a good mix of...wait..um yeah a really deep dish. With lots of whipped cream. You have to have the whipped cream.

Posted by: admin at December 3, 2008 3:14 PM

The only one who disappointed me was The Rock but then a commentor up there made me realize that I'd really only have sex with him so...yea, political ideology doesn't matter.

The Republican party is much different than it used to be. It took on some crazy Neo-conservative, Bible-thumping, non-transparent freak show type...thing when the newest Bush took office. I don't think Republicans know what Republicans used to be. As a concept, the Republican party is a great party but the last eight years have seen the party go haywire.

By the way, I am officially loving the word "party" to describe a political affiliation. I hated it all through the election process but now it just seems fun.

Posted by: NotBlonde at December 3, 2008 3:17 PM

Kayanne

you brought up a good point. Everything is tolerated except for somebody not sharing the exact same political ideology. It makes me love that South Park episode of the tolerance concentration camp even more.

Posted by: dylanj at December 3, 2008 3:20 PM

Kayanne - doubt very much that you suck. You did find your way here, and discovered that you liked the lot of us (give or take a few, I'm sure). So, even if you are a wackjob (I kid! I kid!) conservative (and I'm not saying that you are), you can't be all bad. :)

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 3:21 PM

I've just been hitting refresh for the past 10 minutes.

I'm still waiting for the shit to really start flying. C'mon, you know you want to!

Fight! Fight! Fight!

I probably need a more challenging job.

Posted by: Arr Matey at December 3, 2008 3:21 PM

I didn't know about Vince Vaughn, mainly because I never bothered to care, but he's a Cubs fan AND a Republican? And he made another shitty Christmas movie? He is officially unredeemable to me. And, for that matter, I wasn't aware that anyone in Chicago voted Republican. I know he's from the suburbs, but still!

Posted by: Austin at December 3, 2008 3:23 PM

Tamantha, if party affiliation says a lot about a person, then this list wouldn't really surprise anyone, would it?

Posted by: joe at December 3, 2008 3:26 PM

Good point, NotBlonde... Republican means different things to different people, so how can you really say that it says something about them? Same goes for every other party that exists.

On the other hand, stereotypes make life easier.

/adding fuel to the fire in an attempt to make this thing OUT OF CONTROL

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 3, 2008 3:28 PM

I really don't see the issue with this list. It's Dustin's blog and he isn't under any kind of obligation to be balanced. The list does come across as kind of douchey but so does bitching about it.

Posted by: dylanj at December 3, 2008 3:29 PM

Anna Von Beaverplatz (totally laughed out loud when I read that), I guess it just bothers me when people assume the worst when someone says "Republican" or "Democrat". Not all Republicans are assholes, same as not all Democrats are liberal, Pinko, Commie, Marxist, Socialist, tree-huggers who never wash their hair.

Posted by: NotBlonde at December 3, 2008 3:35 PM

Ewwwww, those evil republicans. Maybe 4 years from now the post will be "Five Guys It May Pain You to Realize Are Democrats."

Posted by: sosumi at December 3, 2008 3:36 PM

Conservatives suck ass, and that is my contribution to this debate about tolerance and political ideology.

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 3:37 PM

I don't really understand why people don't think that voting republican says something about someone. Maybe if they voted republican by doing eenie meenie miney moe.

Good or bad, it obviously says something about their values.

Posted by: becks at December 3, 2008 3:42 PM

Question: where exactly did people get the idea that Pajiba bills itself as tolerant? The tagline isn't "Scathing Reviews for Non-Judgmental People," folks.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 3:46 PM

See, I have this friend who labels himself Republican. However, he's talking about old-school, pre-association-with-Christian-conservativism Republican. He rarely actually votes Republican, because he doesn't agree with the current party values.
That's the point I'm trying to make, is that someone can call themselves whatever they want, it doesn't necessarily mean they are what someone else thinks that means.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 3, 2008 3:48 PM

I'm surprised Christopher Nolan isn't mentioned on this list. He's a hardcore conservative. That's why the Dark Knight was an apologia for the Bush-Cheney years.

Posted by: Anonymoose at December 3, 2008 3:50 PM

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2008 3:52 PM

I voted the hell out of Obama, so take that into consideration when reading this.

Personally, I believe the GOP needs to become two parties. On the one hand you have fiscally conservative and socially progressive, on the other you have fiscally and socially belligerent. In time, the former would grow to become a viable rival to the Democratic party (because let's face it, Dems, we need one - unchecked power is unchecked power, I don't care who wields it) while the latter would wither and die.

Honestly I think that's the only way they're going to survive. I remain hopeful there are still enough intelligent Republicans (I'm looking at the ones who parted ties with McCain near the end) to pull it off.

Posted by: vercordio at December 3, 2008 3:56 PM

tee hee, figs!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at December 3, 2008 3:56 PM

@Anonymoose

Haha... it was hilarious to watch the conservative columnists/bloggers cream themselves over that. Especially when the take-home message is that the right wing seems to think that they're batman.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 3:56 PM

Vincent Gallo claims to be a Republican too.

I know, who cares, right?

Posted by: eggy weggs at December 3, 2008 3:57 PM

Vincent Gallo makes me really, really uncomfortable.

Yes, exactly when did we become accepting around here? I thought that we were all about shamefully hiding our flaws/Tootsie roll centers (but not our kinkiness)? Whenever I comment, I use my mind to take myself to my happy place. Coincidentally, forcing myself to black out like that is how I get through my work day, too!

Posted by: branded at December 3, 2008 4:02 PM

I'm not sure - by original Joe the Plumber, you mean the bald, not actually a plumber, 15 minutes of fame guy (not me) or a commenter (might be me.)

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 4:08 PM

Fuck any actor or actress that makes clear their political alliances. I hate both dems and republicans so I'm probably the odd man out. Real artistes don't fucking flaunt their political alliances because they're supposed to be above that. Causes are fine but democrat? Republican? Fuck parties they ruin the system.

Also can NeoCons and republicans split the fuck up already? I'm tired of assholes assuming all republicans are shitheads because of the fucked up Neocon policies and people that have infiltrated the party. Where the hell are my fiscal conservative, government out of the bedroom republicans? Did you fuckers sell your soul to the NeoCon wave of social intolerance and fiscal fucknuttery? Or did you become no party tards like me?

Fuck parties. Excuse my vitrol, but FUCK the 2 Party system it's a load of shit.

Also on a side note, it's good to see Obama is stacking his administration with Clinton cronies, so much for fucking change.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 4:11 PM

This is bullshit. These Hollywood bigwigs are so out of touch with society. They're not real Republicans like me. They just do it to fit in with the rest of Hollywood.

And Tamatha, party affiliation can say a lot about a person... or it could just indicate a person's belief of what their Government should be. Protect state rights... less government intervention ... lower taxes ......

Posted by: JP at December 3, 2008 4:13 PM

But can we all at least agree that Republicans tend to be haters?

I mean, if the entire Republican platform was just about states' rights, lower taxes, and smaller government I doubt there would be such a strong reaction...right?

Come on, I can sense that this is heating up.

Posted by: Arr Matey at December 3, 2008 4:17 PM

Victoria Jackson of SNL fame is also a raging Republican, very conservative and very insane. I'm surprised you didn't put her on the list. Anyway, Sam Riami is quite a surprise and not too bright either...he donated both times?! I can understand the first time, but the second time? That's just not cool....at all...of course Denzel had to support Obama, he's also Christian you know?

Posted by: ph at December 3, 2008 4:18 PM

Dustin are you going to let George call you stupid? His attack on you is so...lame...!

Posted by: ph at December 3, 2008 4:22 PM

joe - are you kidding? They are actors; their job is to mold themselves into different characters. In theory, we have no idea who their true selves are. On top of that, Hollywood has a reputation for being a hotbed of Democratic leanings, so yeah, that's why A) this list is a surprise, and B) their political affiliation says a lot about them--it still speaks to how they identify themselves in the scheme of things.

And again, MY NAME HAS NO N IN IT. And missing that the first time I pointed it out, makes you an idiot. Or just really, really, really--I mean REALLY--slow.

Oh, on the subject of Republican actors, last I checked, Gary Oldman is a big ol' Republican.

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 4:22 PM

Devo, you're so right. Why would Obama want to stack his administration with competent Clinton cronies, when he could just as easily stacked his administration with, good job Brownie, and Alberto "Speedy" Gonzales. I mean, what the fuck is Obama thinking?

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 4:25 PM

Last I heard Gary wasn't much of anything, he just got mad that a movie leaned pro-democrat when it should have been objective. I guess that makes him a honorary republican or something.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 4:28 PM

Oh Pookie if Obama wants economic change he shouldn't fucking install people who were asleep at the wheel in any administration. And I love the Cold War Hawks seeping their claws into his inner circle too.

lol Change works if it means reverting back to the Clinton era.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 4:30 PM

Sam Raimi? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I'm gonna go cry in the corner now.

Posted by: Nadha at December 3, 2008 4:34 PM

yes pookie yearns for the glorious Clintonian years when we fell asleep during the Rwanda genocide, the growing threat of Al-Queda and our president commited perjury.

good times

That said- I do thin Obama will run his own show despite having Hilary and Co around.

Bill Richardson would have been a better pick but oh well

Posted by: dylanj at December 3, 2008 4:34 PM

JP - Why do you think that a person's belief of what their Government should be. Protect state rights... less government intervention ... lower taxes ...... doesn't say a lot about a person? One's political philosophy is an important aspect of one's values. And your values say a lot about you.

I have to say that I'm baffled as to why folks seem to be saying that "No! No! My political beliefs don't say anything about me!" WTF? You don't have to affiliate with a political party, but if you do, then that does say something about you. It simply does. And for some reason, folks seem to be assuming that because I've said that political affiliation says something about you, that inherently means it says something bad. Fascinating--'cause that's not what I've said. Yet.

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 4:34 PM

Huh, I'm really the only conservative leaning lady out there in Pajiba-land? No other Lady Libertarians? Really?

My nerves are raw from the emotional exhaustion that is finals. I'm keeping my mouth shut.

Also, Pooks, please don't tell me this means we're done? Not all conservatives suck ass, dammit!

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 4:35 PM

My god, you can be stupid. You may be one of the best critics on the internet, but I can't abide by your support of that piece of condenced cunt fluid Keith Olbermann, and some of your other stupid statements.

Posted by: George at December 3, 2008 2:11 PM

I'm sorry, George, you don't get to call anyone stupid until you learn to use spell check. And stop being such a woman-hating little boy. I think you'll really enjoy vaginas once you see one.

And stop being such a woman-hating little boy. I think you'll really enjoy vaginas once you see one.

marya - I think I love you.

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 4:39 PM

Aaaand I'm back.

tamatha Just one little point and this is a teeny tiny itsy bitsy one:

One's political party does not determine how he or she votes.

A republican can vote democrat; a democrat can vote republican, and any one of them could vote third party if the system would let them. I'm unaffiliated. What does that say about me? Go ahead: generalize.

Wearing red or blue doesn't mean that either one of them is your favorite color. It just means it looks good on ya (sometimes).

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 4:41 PM

"No party" for the fucking win my friends. Although primaries are retarded when you're without a party. Woo ONE CHOICE or NO CHOICE, yes!

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 4:43 PM

tamatha

I voted for Obama and he doesnt have alot of the values I hold dear. However, it was clear that he is whats best for the country right now so thats who I voted for. But I do agree that for the most part people are going to identify with a party that shares their values both politically and personally.

Posted by: dylanj at December 3, 2008 4:46 PM

Cold War Hawks! Oh shit, Iran Contra fun and games, fun and motherfucking games. Devo what the fuck are you talking about? You can't name me one Republican President that's has ever balanced the budget, or given a fuck about the military.

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 4:47 PM

I think for the purposes of this conversation, people are referring to the republicans who are voting republican most of the time.

Posted by: becks at December 3, 2008 4:49 PM

Wherein did I say Republicans are better? Your bias is showing loud and clear my friend.

See I have this problem where I judge all presidents past and present on this thing called issues and their actions, not their party affiliation. So I'm critical of all of them regardless.

And you see Obama has just reinstalled much of Clinton's cabinet. This does not bode well for any of us. What this has to do with any republican, I'm not sure but apparently in your line of defense any critique of Obama lands me in the "sympathetic to republican" box. Unfortunately for you I'm not sympathetic to any president or party. Seriously guy what the fuck is your problem?

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 4:50 PM

I'm always much more disappointed in the Scientologist lists.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 3, 2008 4:51 PM

Kayanne- I think you see a conflict in our positions that does not really exist.

Absolutely, a Dem can vote Repub and vice versa, but voting's not the whole story.

The step of affiliating with a political party says that you choose to align yourself with at least some of the tenets of that party.

The fact that you have chosen to remain unaffiliated says to me that you don't feel comfortable enough with what any of the political parties represent to want to throw your lot in with them. And that you want to keep your options open.

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 4:53 PM

P.S.

Since you're such a big fucking fan of Clinton, here you go:

Under Clinton, Yugoslavia was bombed and dismantled as part of what Noam Chomsky described as the "New Military Humanism." Sudan and Afghanistan were attacked, Haiti was destabilized and "free trade" deals like the North America Free Trade Agreement and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade radically escalated the spread of corporate-dominated globalization that hurt U.S. workers and devastated developing countries. Clinton accelerated the militarization of the so-called War on Drugs in Central and Latin America and supported privatization of U.S. military operations, giving lucrative contracts to Halliburton and other war contractors. Meanwhile, U.S. weapons sales to countries like Turkey and Indonesia aided genocidal campaigns against the Kurds and the East Timorese.

sssshhhhh devo

pookie is one of those liberals who only sees the world in black and white- the GOP is evil where the Dem's are good. Strangely enough that kind of mentality is what the Neo- Con's are looking for.

:)

Posted by: dylanj at December 3, 2008 4:55 PM

Ha ha!

Devo is trying to take Pookie to task.

Haven't you put it together, man? Pookie doesn't exist on the same plane as the rest of us. He is somewhere else...and nothing you cut and paste will stop him.

There's no sense in trying.

Posted by: Arr Matey at December 3, 2008 4:58 PM

Pookie is just a liberal troll. Funny enough I'm more used to right winged trolls.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 5:00 PM

Thanks dylanj. 'Cause why else would you sign up to join that party, right? Doesn't mean that you agree with all aspects of your chosen party, or that they sometimes don't go in a direction you completely disagree with.

Posted by: tamatha at December 3, 2008 5:01 PM

Whew! That is a lot to digest Devo, I'm not sure I can respond intelligently. But I'll try, one question though? Did Clinton balance the budget?

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 5:03 PM

Balanced the budget, gave us a surplus that Bush decided we didn't need. Doesn't take away shit like NAFTA though does it? Still got that.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 5:04 PM

Aw, fuck, tamatha you're being reasonable. I think I was harking back to what you called out to George.

Then I realized George is a dick.

You win the gold star again. But this time I do not stick the dismount.

Posted by: Kayanne at December 3, 2008 5:05 PM

@dylanj:

Good call on Richardson. Why Obama'd pick the inherently annoying person over the veteran diplomat as Secretary of State is beyond me.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 5:15 PM

David Mamet as a Republican is hard to take too.

Posted by: Boo at December 3, 2008 5:15 PM

Good point Arr Matey, Devo can cut and paste with the best of them. What sane motherfucker walks around with East Timorese on the tip of their tongue. I think he keeps that information in his attacks against Clinton file. I mean really, after eight years of total chaos, Devo is more concerned about some shit that went down during one of the most prosperous times in American history than he is in the shit that went down during Comrade Bush's term, I think it's call misdirection Devo.

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 5:18 PM

....and I care why?

Posted by: Klams at December 3, 2008 5:23 PM

I think it's called we all know what just happened in the 8 years but you're more than satisfied with Obama recycling failed Clintonites. Ah you gotta love tools.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 5:25 PM

Good move for Bush to get rid of the surplus, I mean really, America don't need no stinking savings account. Because the oil we will get from eye-rock will pay for everything.

Posted by: Pooke at December 3, 2008 5:25 PM

And yet I said nothing about Bush getting rid of the surplus as a good thing. You're in a class of your own Pookie.

Posted by: Devo at December 3, 2008 5:27 PM

@Devo: what specific Clintonites do you have a problem with? Generally speaking, both candidates picked them for their qualifications. Hillary, though, I can agree with you on.

@Pookie: budget surpluses/deficits are pretty minor compared to stuff like deregulation and trade.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 5:30 PM

Denzel Washington? Really? The whole Republican thing isn't nearly as weird as being a conservative Christian. Having seen Tranining Day, Man on Fire, and American Gangster I never would have guessed that Denzel was a hardcore Christian.

Of course you didn't, I was being sarcastic Devo. The whole point of me going back and forth with you is that the whole world is waiting for Bush to leave office and you're trying to defend/compare him to Clinton and I think you're so cute playing the underdog role.

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 5:35 PM

Posted by: TryScience at December 3, 2008 5:46 PM

I won't argue with Clinton - someone with an inhuman talent for irritating people isn't someone we want representing us internationally. Especially when he could have picked Richardson. But Timothy Geithner is the perfect guy for the job - his specialty seems to be successfully presiding over bailouts.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 5:49 PM

"budget surpluses/deficits are pretty minor compared to stuff like deregulation and trade."

Joe The Plumber

Are you serious Joe? One has a direct affect on the other. The markets have proven that fact clearly. Gas does not go from $5.00 per gallon to $1.75 per gallon over the course of four months without the market being in utter turmoil. With the proper legislation the markets, and trade will be brought under control. That genius that ran for president on the Republican side that the market will self- correct itself without government intervention.

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 5:52 PM

@Pookie: You're talking about something completely different - right now, we're looking at a financial crisis, which comes from us not regulating the market, leading to subprime loans and other dumbass strategies. That's from deregulation, which has nothing to do with fiscal policy. That's why we can fund the bailout with deficit spending - if what you said was true (that deficit spending led to the collapse) we wouldn't be able to do that.

Posted by: Joe the Plumber at December 3, 2008 6:00 PM

Joe- without a sound fiscal policy we are destined to continue down this road that we are on. We need a big enough stimulus package that can spur the economy, and we will also need deficit spending.

Tamatha, I'm not saying that your party affiliation says Nothing about a person, but it does not say as much about a person as you imply. This concept that Republicans, are hateful, bigoted, greedy, anti-environmental, etc., is as silly as me calling all Democrats hippie-commie tree huggers.

A lot of the time, the two parties share similar beliefs, just different ways of how to accomplish them (i.e., balance a budget, give tax credits to the middle class, handle the current bailouts).

I live in Cali, where our "Republican" governor is against off-shore drilling, was vocally against Prop 8, was neutral on the big anti-crime initiates in the recent election, and wants to raise taxes. But he also pushed hard for laws that result in less work comp benefits, more casinos, was for a law that would require parent notification before a teen could have an abortion, no on the alternative energy initiates, and no on the animal rights law that was recently passed.

Posted by: JP at December 3, 2008 6:38 PM

Denzel a Christian Conservative? The Denzel who has been cheating on his wife for years? Whatever.

Posted by: Isla at December 3, 2008 6:38 PM

So here's the thing: it's not inherently BAD to be a Republican or to believe in the ideals of the Republican party. The Republican party was based on the premise that the government should be allowed to intervene and intrude very little in the private lives and livelihoods of the American public. Less government, more personal responsibility. Isn't that sort of the ideal? We are, for the most part I'm guessing, a bright bunch of boys and girls here. I don't like having Uncle Same tell me I need to pay more here and stop fucking there. I like to make my own rules and live by my own wits to a degree. And assuming that Americans are unable to do such really feeds into a self-fulfilling prophecy that Americans aren't that smart after all and do need a bunch of silver spoon-fed, elitist politicians to tell them how to go about their daily business.

Problem is, the word Republican has now become synonymous with and heralded by the extremist Christian right and social conservatism. If only we could decide, as a nation, to stop wasting our time and tax dollars on legislating morality and trying to argue whose religious beliefs are the least ridiculous and most applicable, we might actually be able to go somewhere as a world leader in economy and democracy.

If only.

Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case, so when it came election day, I had no choice but to pull the lever for Obama, a leader I fortunately do believe in and do have hope for. As much as I don't want elections and politics to be about social issues, they are, because those are the issues that get Average Joe and Average Jane to the polls, and politicians know that. Those are the issues that make money for lobbyists who make money for politicians. It's an ugly, ugly cycle, and so I chose to go with the lesser of two evils, the candidate whose beliefs I felt most closely coincided with my own. I don't claim to be a Democrat, and I don't claim to be a Republican. I think pigeonholing oneself into one of those categories is antiquated and silly. I simply try and vote for the best man, or woman, for the job.

That all being said, can you fucking believe Heidi and Spencer are Republicans? It breaks my heart.

It breaks...my heart.

Posted by: The Pink Hulk at December 3, 2008 6:50 PM

Posted by: Pookie at December 3, 2008 10:00 PM

I can't believe I missed this (sigh).

The parties suck. Even the libertarians put up the worst possible choice this year. Please, if you ever read any of my comments and give them any weight, make it this one: go read and learn about the principles of freedom this country was founded on and why. We have one party that claims it wants social freedom but thinks that we have to give up economic freedom and one that claims it wants economic freedom but thinks we should keep social freedom in check (I'm simplifying). The government grows by taking freedoms, and it always wants to grow, even when it tells you it's going to give you more freedom. It's so hard to get a freedom back once we give it up, and we keep giving them up. God, I wish I were more articulate right now, but don't just listen to what the politicians tell you. The politicians want you to believe that the current economic situation happened because of too much freedom, but the opposite is true. Don't just listen to what I tell you either. Go. Go learn. Tell your friends to do the same. Don't let these bastards enslave us at our own hands.

Clinton's problem was that he was a southern democrat. Way too much Republican tinge in that administration. Deregulation and don't ask don't tell- that's that good ol' boy republican influence for ya.

Dems have a hard time winning / relating in this country because they like this whole THINKING process, they like to work THROUGH answers, snap shots and sound bites don't solve problems so they try to be all intelligent about the issues- in a country that shops at WalMart and thinks it's a deal when they buy $1 toothpaste that can kill you, 99% foreign manufactured goods and in the same moment can't imagine where the jobs have gone and why they can't afford to go to the doctor. Far too close to 51% of this country is fat and stupid and watches Deal or No Deal. It is no wonder to me we've been in a downward spiral since Reagan sold us on the theory that rich people LIKE to share their money!

I'm with tamatha. It says something. Saying you're a Republican in 2008 says one of two things to me- you give two shits less about those pesky "poor" people Jesus liked to talk about or you are two fricking stupid to realize the small government fiscal conservative Republican of Barry Goldwater's era (of which, BTW, you weren't around for unless somehow in my absence here this crowd aged 15-30 years) hasn't existed since Reagan's vacant, pretty boy face won back when I was a youngin'. Either way, it doesn't say anything good about you and I wish you well in your mind-numbing, self centered, "someday I might make enough money for the Republicans in power to care about me!" lives so long as you stay the fuck out of the voting booth for the next decade or two. Go hunt some wolves from a god damn helicopter in Alaska while we try to fix shit in this country for your dumb asses, k? And try not to kick a homeless person on your way out there- they're hurting enough.

"Dion couldn't lead Courtney Love to a blow party"

*sigh* It's true, admin. I really wish it wasn't...but it's true.

And I'm a hippy-dippy environmental type, and I can't bring myself to root for the Green party either. Maybe with a different leader...I've seen May before she took the post, and she certainly doesn't strike me as bright enough to run a country. Layton seems like a decent choice to me, although I'm not totally in agreement with the NDP's policies.

Mostly, I just wish we could go more than a year without the freakin' government upheaval. Gah! Politics, go away!

Maybe similar pairings will be made today???

so basically lillianna28 is a douche. (yes, this insult applies to women as well.)

That kind of inflammatory hyperbole is what I would expect from an 18 yr old who just took their first semester of college poly sci and thinks they know the score. One of the sad things about the spread of technology is that hacks and mouth breathers can afford to cruise around the internet(s) with the people who take the time to have actual dialogue.

Posted by: dylanj at December 4, 2008 10:06 AM

Pookie, I want to get some things across. First off, sometimes the word cunt is the only word that can do justice to my hatred of someone, if the word cock can exist, it is only fitting to have an equal word for the vagina.

And secondly, my hatred for Olbermann is made clear by my hatred for biased and shitty journalism, which is what MSNBC has devolved into. When you lay down with dogs like FOX, you do wake up with flies. In fact, right now I hate it more than FOX because its creating an almost identical news situation that FOX helped create in the Bush administration by lavishing the administration with endless praise and asking no questions. The only reason you don't see the wolf is because this time it's wearing a sheep costume.

And despite my dissagreements with Dustin over politics, and sometimes even movies, I think he's one of the best movie critic's I've ever seen on the Web. And I hated Bush before it was cool, I really didn't support Kerry, I just hated Bush, I didn't know shit about Kerry, just fucking hated Bush. I always will, I hate him as much as Pete Nanos, who almost cost everyone in my town their jobs.

Right now, I'm holding out to see if Obama will fix things, I supported him from the nomination, but I'm worried none the less. And yes, I'm an independent, with libertarian political beliefs.

Posted by: George at December 4, 2008 10:30 AM

Another thing about Clinton, Devo, he balanced the budget because we were flying high on the internet bubble. Just like George Bush had the economy looking good (in the simplest terms and only by some indicators) because of the housing bubble. It was all smoke and mirrors, both times. This economy has been shit for decades.

Pookie- I take this stuff seriously because it's fucking serious business. We've all been fucking off and abdicating our role as the rulers of this country, which is why we've allowed a series of slick talking, corrupt, power hungry assholes take over. I come to talk here because engaging people with a different viewpoint is how you learn--and how you let others learn from you when you're right. I've learned a lot and changed my views on key issues because of discussions I've had here. Talking only with people who already agree with you is how you end up with ignorant political extremes.

Posted by: Eep at December 4, 2008 10:45 AM

George I wasn't trying to start an argument with you about your political beliefs. I know that good people come in all different sizes, colors, and political persuasions. It was funny to me that you would attack Rowles, and in my book you get a gold star for attacking him. George you are a good guy, and if I've offended you in any way please accept my apology.

Posted by: Pookie at December 4, 2008 10:46 AM

Eep- please accept my apology I was not trying to imply that you weren't serious about your political beliefs, sometimes in my haste to be funny I overlook the seriousness of the subject at hand. I too love this country, my father bled in Vietnam, and his father bled in WWII. When I hear Bush apologizing about a war he could have chose not to fight my blood boils. Sometimes humor is the only thing that can get you through the day.

If there is anyone else I need to apologize to, feel free and step right up.

Posted by: Pookie at December 4, 2008 11:03 AM

Pooks, maybe we owe and apology to figgy and everybody else?

Sorry folks.

Posted by: Kayanne at December 4, 2008 11:06 AM

I was just thinking about you, good morning K.

Posted by: Pookie at December 4, 2008 11:18 AM

Good morning, Pooks, but I do think we really should play nice for the other folks here. Yes?

Posted by: Kayanne at December 4, 2008 11:36 AM

K, you only have to ask me once to play with you.

Posted by: Pookie at December 4, 2008 11:46 AM

Pooks, don't cause us any trouble!

Posted by: Kayanne at December 4, 2008 12:01 PM

ah, dylanj, the clarity of your gender-neutrality in insulting is oh so refreshing, and intelligent too! If you can equate being a 2008 republican and being a good person together, I suppose I should applaud the mental contortions you're capable of. I must simply be too feeble minded after shedding 12+ years from my life to post here to make such leaps possible.

Posted by: lilianna28 at December 4, 2008 12:14 PM

lilianna28

if you really believe that being a Republican in 2008 makes you a "bad person" then you're a fucking idiot and not worth another word.

Posted by: dylanj at December 4, 2008 12:28 PM

pookie-
It's all good. Actually I thought you were calling me out for being too serious. At any rate, any anger in the posts isn't directed at you, it's at the politicians and the whole situation.

Posted by: Eep at December 4, 2008 12:38 PM

Doh! dylanj I saw that coming.

Posted by: Pookie at December 4, 2008 12:55 PM

I want an apology. They make me feel powerful.

Posted by: TWoP Fan at December 4, 2008 12:58 PM

Seriously, is someone's political ideology that big a deal? Who cares who one votes for as long as they're educated on the issues and candidates?

And I never udnerstood why being a Republican is such an evil thing - Lincoln was a Republican. And although the party didn't exist during our country's formative years, many of our first presidents followed political ideals that would now be considered Republican: smaller federal government, less taxation, more states' rights, etc. Our country was essential founded on Republican and conservative points of view.

And I'm a democrat, by the way, since I can already anticipate the mud about to be slung my way.

You know who are a bunch of total assholes?

The goddamn Whigs.

Those dudes are such cockgobblers.

Posted by: Arr Matey at December 4, 2008 1:37 PM

Yeah, I'm looking at you, Millard.

Posted by: Arr Matey at December 4, 2008 1:40 PM

Thanks Pookie, I accept. And I'm glad you wrote that because the last thing we need is more trollish behavior on the internet. Let's make sure that whenever there's an argument, we realize our humanity and move beyond it. I hope we can all learn from that. Have a nice day.

Posted by: George at December 4, 2008 1:44 PM

I think the important thing for us all to ask ourselves is: are we human or are we dancers?

Posted by: JP at December 4, 2008 1:52 PM

Denzel Washington is a nice guy, he's always buying hospitals for people and building houses and such. He is proof that you can be a Republican and a good person.

Posted by: Agente Provocatrice at December 4, 2008 2:26 PM

Hopper is scary as shit, so that doesn't surprise me (although he did announce he was voting for Obama).
Sam Raimi...now THAT is a huge bummer. I hope beyond hope that he's an old school Republican who believes in moderate government spending versus the new Evangelical nutjob republicans who believe in mindless hate mongering. I actually know (and really like) a few people that identify as republican but don't fit the creepy mold so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Posted by: snarla at December 4, 2008 4:01 PM

"Hope beyond hope"? I'm curious, as a serious question, are there people here who assume that MOST Republicans are crazy evangelical nutbags? Maybe more to the point, are there people who don't?

Posted by: Eep at December 4, 2008 5:00 PM

Yeah, Republicans are REAL bad. Let's all give our (and our children's and our grandchildren's) tax dollars to the automakers so the same useless $40+ dollar an hour union scam artists can keep on making a killing doing nothing ad infinitum. Democrats are so smart!

Posted by: Acemeister at December 4, 2008 11:24 PM

Autoworkers are making a killing? Are you out of your mind? WHO is making a killing in the auto industry, even when it's failing? I'll answer that for you: the CEOs.

I never liked Vince Vaughn. I always thought there was something creepy about him. Now I know what it is.

Posted by: NBee at December 23, 2008 3:52 AM

Smart people.

Posted by: Gunner at December 23, 2008 9:17 AM

Nothing creepy about Vince Vaughn!! Whats up with you people!! The media is so biased on the left! Oh, one doesn't "care" if you aren't a liberal!!
Good for Denzel standing up for what he believes in, you are beaten down in Hollywood if your a wee bit conservative. Wonder how many hop on the band wagon just to keep jobs?

Like the Obama family.....hope they don't sell the Lincoln bedroom to the highest Hollyweird bidder!
