Ranking The 20 Best Holiday "SNL" Sketches

By Joanna Robinson | Seriously Random Lists | December 18, 2012 | Comments ()

Watching Martin Short's mostly excellent Holiday "SNL" episode last weekend got me uber nostalgic for my favorite Holiday-themed sketches. Over the years, "SNL" has released several Holiday compilations and clip shows (including the excruciatingly bad "A Very Gilly Christmas"), so thankfully none of the following sketches have been allowed to fade into obscurity. But usually one or more of my favorites is missing from the compilations. So, no, I'm not showing you anything new, but I am showing some things I love and ain't that the Holiday spirit? So here they are, in a very particular order, the 20 best Holiday "SNL" sketches.

20. "Christmas Urchins"

19. "Dysfunctional Family Christmas"

18. "Santa's My Boyfriend"

17. "Motivational Santa"

16. "Glengarry Glen-Christmas"

15. "Hannukah Harry"

14. "Dick In A Box"

13. "Mister Robinson's Neighborhood"

12. "Christmastime For The Jews"

11. "Season's Greetings Fom Tarzan, Tonto and Frankenstein"

10. "I Wish It Was Christmas Today"

8. & 9. "Christmas With Stefon"

7. "Trump Christmas"

6. "Bring It On In To Homelessville"

5. "Hannukah Song"

4. "Irwin Mainway"

3. "Steve Martin's Christmas Wish"

2. "Delicious Dish"

1. "It's A Wonderful Life":

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

The omission of Schwetty Balls is a goddamned travesty that is only soothed by the memory of Baldwin's Glengarry Glenross redux where he slips into the character so deeply that he recites lines from the actual movie instead of the skit. And always the giant brass balls.

I voted myself down since my work internet is completely bizarre and cuts out entire chunks of pages. And yes, I've had lasik surgery.

It's not a skit, but the musical act of the late Luciano Pavarotti and Vanessa Williams (backed up by a great orchestra and boys choir) singing Adeste Fideles is an SNL classic! http://www.hulu.com/watch/1157...

include links for your international viewers!!

  • Bodhi

I LOVE "I Wish It Was Christmas Today". It might be my favorite Christmas song

  • Skyler Durden

Surely somewhere on here there was room for Merry Christmas, Dammit! I still get the giggles thinking about Donnie and Marie making out with each other.

Edit: Oh wow, I can't find it anywhere! Touche, internet.

    Nutbag Jackson!

Why couldn't she have just faded away, like Jan Hooks?

Oh, and why the fuck was Candice Bergen only on SNL five times?

  • janeite1900

    Very well ordered.

  • Enrique del Castillo

I just want to say that I hate Hulu and NBC because they won't let me watch those videos since I don't live in the US. Still, I agree with most choices (Schwetty Balls is one of my favorite sketches ever and now I have “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” in my head for the rest of the holidays).

Does anyone remember a sketch with Garrett Morris where he was singing a lovely Christmas song, and there was a very sinister Christmas tree sneaking up behind him, and at the end of the song it impaled Garrett Morris with one of its branches? Or have I been smoking something really good?

  • Jezzer

I think that was a horror trailer spoof for "Killer Trees," but it's been so many years since I've seen it.

  • Soup! (There it is.)

  • ViciousTrollop

I hate being Canadian sometimes. Curse you, Hulu!

“Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood” should be Number #1. It was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the post title and is the only SNL Christmas spot I remember.

  • monty

Seriously, Mr. Robinson's neighborhood crushes everything else on this list.

  • Laura

I thought for sure Schwetty Balls and Mister Robinson's Neighborhood would be one and two!

  • Steve

No Carl Sagan's Global Warming Christmas Special!?!?!?
