P.S. Tina and Amy, We Miss You: The 2014 Emmy Fashion Roundup

By Cindy Davis | Seriously Random Lists | August 26, 2014 | Comments ()

Well, there went another Emmy ceremony, folks. As usual, the fashion scene was a total mishmash of horrendously bad and mostly boring, although there were a couple of standouts that didn’t make me cry out, “What in the ever-loving fork?” And let’s be honest, we care more about what our favorite celebrities wore than we do about who actually won one of those strange gold-toned statues, right?

Are you following Pajiba on Facebook or Twitter? Every time you do, Bill Murray crashes a wedding.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Lena Dunham's skirt looks like a chum line in the water. And Natalie Dormer, I will tell you ALL my secrets. That is all.

  • TheOriginalMRod

Taryn Manning looks like a meth head they pulled out of a dumpster... Not a good look.

  • poopnado

Man, Pajiba is where I should go for fashion opinions. I disagree with almost all the worst and best dressed...but that's what Go Fug Yourself is for.

  • Haystacks

I find Peter Dinklage pretty hot, but that goatee is not doing it for me. It looks...oddly shaped.

Also, how awesome is it that Captain Janeway was finally recognized? She is still one of my favorite fictional badasses.

  • mzblackwidow

favourite couple - McWoody ! Matthew looks gorgeous (as he usually does) and he and Woody appeared to enjoy the night more than anyone in spite of the boredom factor. That photo of them laughing should be used as exhibit 1 to legalise marijuana.

My best dressed - Lena Headey - from top to toe I think she looks perfect.
Claire Danes - I LOVE her in that colour and love the dress.
Betsy Brandt (who IS she?) - I am in love with the colours, love the dress and the shoes so very much.
    Lizzy Caplan looks stunning.
Alison Janney looks so genuinely happy and, with the colour & fabric of that gorgeous dress who can blame her?
Robin Wright carries it off well and Amy Poehler's dress is beautiful except for not flattering around the middle.

Yuk - Lena Dunham - nothing needs be said.
Laura Prepon, Kate Mara, Michelle Dockery - I hate the dresses. Lucy Lui - the most boring award. And Christina Hendricks who usually shines - ugly dress too. Sad panda .. I love Christina.

  • UglyBattery

It seems as if Lena Dunham was on a mission to look depressed and frumpy while using the ruffles and pink to appear happy. Overall, the ugliest thing I've ever seen on an alleged star, frankly she would have looked better in Katy Perry's denim look...

  • BrokenWindows

I just don't get fashion. Other than obviously garish or terrible things like Lena Dunham here, I can almost never tell that one outfit is bad and one is good.

Why is Christina Hendricks' dress bad and Anna Gunn's good? Why is Kit Harrington's tux bad and none of the other tuxes were bad?

A lot of the best dressed seem to be simple designs. But then Robin Wright's suit missing the back is just bizarre.

  • laylaness

I don't like Lena Dunham, but I want her to stand up straight and wear more tailored looks. I know she's making a statement or whatever, but you don't have to go frumpy to do it. As a fellow rectangular-shaped person who comes from a long line of short, chubby Spanish ladies, GIRL, you are not doing yourself any favors.

I think Taylor Schilling looked great. Usually her hair is sort of limp, but that up-do works wonders.

Wiig was so disappointingly boring last night. Sigh.

  • BlackRabbit

I hate black tuxes and solid-color dresses, but that's me. Jazz it up, wear a belt or something!

  • DominaNefret

Lena Dunham always hides her body in gigantic dresses at these things, but I can't help but think that what she really needs is a form-fitting, knee length dress and pair of killer heels.

  • The Butt

Robin Wright is wearing that top backwards

  • logan

I thought that outfit was terrible. It reminded me of the backwards suit thing Celine Dion wore years ago. That was terrible too.

  • I would have put Amy Poehler in the Why Would You Do That to Your Beautiful Breasts? category. She looks fine in the picture that you posted but not so good on TV. And her hair was sad.

  • Paula

Marchesa is always so ugly and tacky. I know Wienstein's wife designs it...but come on.

  • laylaness

Which is tragic because Georgina is gorgeous and has impeccable personal style.

  • Robin Wright should have walked backwards the entire event. I don't think I have a back fetish, but she sure has a great back.

  • Sara_Tonin00

I do not like Kate Walsh's dress (are we done with peplums yet? Can we please be? I saw a pajama top with a peplum at Nordstrom Rack the other day and my eyes rolled back so far I almost sprained them.)

I do not like Claire Danes' dress, and I especially think that is the wrong red for her.

I don't like January Jones' shoes, but I know she likes to edge things up if they get too pretty. I like Michelle Dockery's dress more each time I see it, and the reverse for Kerry Washington's.

And best boob tape cannot possibly go to Sarah Silverman, because Hayden Panettiere put that bit of infrastructure to. the. test.

  • emmalita

The first picture I saw of Hayden P's dress, I thought "Chest Butt!"

  • _Alexander_

How is Alexandra Daddario even a real person? Look at her. She is so perfect. Those eyes, that face, those boobs, that body!

  • llp

I kind of like Lena D.'s hair, and I am fascinated by the skirt. The top is terrible, though a lot of her problem is her inability to pose or even just stand up straight. That, plus poor tailoring, is the source of a lot of these dress problems.

Laura Prepon, Sarah Paulson, Minnie Driver and Michelle Dockery are my worst dressed.

I think Amanda Peet looks good, actually, and Lizzy Caplan, Allison Janney, Kate Mulgrew, Angela Bassett, Samira Wiley and Natalie Dormer look perfect.

I like colour, generally, but can do without limp hair and centre parts.

  • emmalita

Kate Mulgrew is rocking. She knows exactly what to do with her body (or her stylist does).

I love Samira Wiley's dress until the skirt flares out. I am sooooo tired of the mermaid look.

  • llp

I have never really loved that silhouette, and it is really getting dated this go around, but I think the colour more than makes up for it.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Lena D also looks like she's trying to give model eye & mouth, and instead she just looks mentally incapacitated (which is the opposite of the truth.) Photos of her smiling or goofing rather than looking oh-so-serious would've helped a great deal.

  • llp

    She looks so uncomfortable.

  • SugarSmak

Do they not have any competent hairdressers in LA? That awful, limp hair on so many beautiful women here gives me the sads. Let's take a lesson from the fabulous Chad Michaels, shall we? UPDO!

  • Sara_Tonin00

also: I really like Jennifer Westfeldt's shoes. I think they go very nicely with that hemline. Whereas I like Lena Headey's outfit *except* the shoes, which are clompy.

I wonder if I can find something kinda like Natalie Dormer's dress for my next black-tie. It's sexy but conservative enough for a work event. And style my hair like Lena Headey...

  • Sara_Tonin00

Oh, I love Westfeldt's dress. The color is beautiful, and considering it's a Marchesa things could be a lot worse. I also like most of your worst-dressed list and meh list, including Sarah Paulson - I thought that was a fun choice. I also think that Margulies and Louis-Dreyfus have gotten to the point where they get to just be polished and no-fuss gorgeous (Anna Gunn is another example). This is standard for them. They've done it over and over before. They wow simply by being themselves, and looking the way they do, and being amazing.

When I saw the pic of Lena Dunham this morning though, I *knew* she was going to top everyone's worst list, and rightfully so. The concept is fun, but the top is so ill-fitting...she might've been better off going with a tank top. And the blonde hair is a very, very bad shade for her. I kinda want to watch Fashion Police just to see what they say about it...

(btw, this is my go to fashion site for day-after-awards shows)

  • Sammers

My thought exactly! I didn't really expect Lena to make any of the best dressed lists, but dear lord, that outfit was terrible. Ill-fitting indeed.

  • mswas

Oh Lena Dunham you hot mess. Did you not even LOOK in the mirror before you walked out the door? I don't even

  • I'm so confused by Lena. She's not an unfortunate looking woman but every dress she chooses looks like she lost a dare. It's almost like she does this on purpose? Is this some sort of meta-commentary about how superficial hollywood is?

  • Classic

I think she does it on purpose. I swear DC is the land of hipsters and Lena is their queen. I had so many people tell me today I like that she doesn't try to look good since that's all that HW cares about. I said screw look good, how about not looking like she was attacked by a pissed off stylist. She looks rumpled and ill kempt. I be saying the same thing if she was a guy too.

  • Mrs. Julien

I can even understand the impulse to say "Forget them. I'm going full Pretty Princess and I don't care!", but at least make sure it fits properly. No one, NO ONE! looks good in a cap sleeve. The best it can be is not unflattering.

  • Wednesday

And she seems to revel in the cap sleeves, all the time. And Peter Pan collars.

I could understand if she wore things that looked comfortable and weren't flattering as a fuck-you-I'm-happy-with-it statement. Give me a giant comfy sweatshirt any day of the week and yeah, if I were purple, you could mistake me for Barney the Dinosaur and I wouldn't much care. But the woman ALWAYS looks like the clothes are two sizes too small and horribly binding. It makes me tug at my own clothes in sympathy. That shirt doesn't just look dumpy, it looks aggressively uncomfortable.

  • Sara_Tonin00

UGH to cap sleeves. UGH UGH.

  • Classic

The mirror broke itself on purpose when it saw her getup. She was a hot mess.

  • Berry

After seeing a few more pictures of her from last night, I'm now ready to say that Lizzy Caplan looked flawless from head to toe. She'll be so relieved to hear of my approval! Seriously, though. She's stunning.

  • BlackRabbit

She always looks sad to me. Hot, but sad. I wanted to give her a hug.

  • Berry

Maybe she finds that whole red-carpet malarkey uncomfortable? Or maybe her people told her to act all model-y and fierce, you know, no smiling.

  • BendinIntheWind

    Uzo Aduba looked HAWT.

But Jesus Christ, Kit Harington, JUST SMILE FOR ONCE

  • emmalita

He's probably still mad about Pompeii. Terrible movie.

  • Another Kate

I find that I have many thoughts:

Aw, isn't it sweet that Laura Prepon kept her prom dress from 1987?
If Rose Leslie had just hoiked the entire thing up two inches, she would have looked fine. Unmemorable, but fine.
I don't mind the bow on Janney's dress, and the color and fabric are so beautiful.
Mayim Bialak is bringing Victorian princess realness to the proceedings.
I would have liked Samira Wiley's dress better if it weren't a mermaid thing, but not everyone can pull off that color and she looks great from the knees up.
Jennifer Westfeldt's dress is lovely. And I think Betsy Brandt's is my favorite!
Amy Poehler's dress reminds me of one that Penelope Cruz wore to the Oscars a few years ago, except Penelope's was red.
Something about Laverne Cox's dress is bugging me (the baby-heads, maybe) but I like the softer hair.
Lizzy Caplan looks elegant and sophisticated. Watch her Q score skyrocket after this.
Natalie Dormer BROUGHT IT and she knows it.
    Nikolaj Coster-Waldau: YES PLEASE.

  • Mrs. Julien

That is a personal best for Sarah Silverman.

Who else wondered how Julia Roberts sat in her dress? It was so bumpy.

Halle Berry looked like Halle Berry in the best possible way. Gorgeous colour and fit. Nothing earth shattering just beautiful.

  • Mrs. Julien

Lucy Liu's dress is BORING. She usually does so much better.
Amy Poehler's dress is cool but unflattering.
I HATE Kate Mara's dress. She needs to fire her team. They never get it right.

  • emmalita

I thought Amy Poehler looked lovely from the waste up, but the skirt made her legs look wide and stumpy. I don't really like that kind of metallic dress though.

  • Agreed. I adore Amy and the metallic was great but the pattern created an unflattering block around her waist.

  • Mrs. Julien

I love metallics. If it was metallic and a croc print I would likely swoon.

  • emmalita

Ha! I read that as metallic crocs at first and almost swooned.

  • nosio

Weird pokey issues aside, Uzo Aduba looked STUNNING in that color, with that fit. I mean, that woman is just radiant.

  • Mrs. Julien

Poor Rose Leslie, you can tell she knows.
Sarah Paulson never does herself justice.
I don't know that I mind Janney's bow since the colour is so beautiful.
Perhaps Ms. Daddario decided to focus attention of That Face.
Taryn Manning's hair is screaming audibly.

  • There is so much wrong with Rose's dress and the first thing is that those of us with small to nonexistent bosoms can and should never wear that cut of top. The crossed fabric just highlights what isn't there. Lovely color but it doesn't matter, it was never going to work. Which is too bad - she could have rocked a dress that flattered her slender frame and gorgeous milky skin but instead she looks like she's wearing her sister's ill-fitting hand me down.

  • Mrs. Julien

I suppose the problem is that it is off-the-designer-rack and therefore not properly fitted her her body. The real question is WHO on her team helped he choose this dress and are they applying for unemployment benefits yet?

  • Berry

"Stop bleaching and teasing me, OMG! Just leave me alone!!"

  • emmalita

The crime of Rose Leslie's dress is fit. The color is beautiful, but it's too big.

  • Mrs. Julien

Hoik, Rose, hoik that dress like you've never hoiked before.

  • Mrs. Julien

Angela Bassett looks fierce even if that isn't the best photo of her.

  • logan

    When does she not?

  • Mrs. Julien

    It's her essential Bassettness.

  • emmalita

I thought Teyonah Parris was a knockout. She looked fresh and lovely.

  • Ruthie O

  • Mrs. Julien

I have a deep and abiding love of chartreuse so I'm with you.

  • Mrs. Julien

Sorry! Didn't know you had already posted a picture.

  • emmalita

There can't be too many pictures of her in that dress.

  • Mrs. Julien

Maybe if they flipped the bodice and skirt fabric? That is a wall of chartreuse. Maybe skip the overskirt?

  • emmalita

I would be all in favor of skipping the over skirt.

  • Berry

Oh yeah. Although I would like it even better if it was just one big skirt, and not a one mermaid-y skirt and a skirt cape, she still looks amazing.

  • emmalita

Yes, the skirt cape look isn't my favorite, but she makes it work. I think the bodice, and her visible happiness to be there, is what makes the whole thing work.

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

It's just nice to see someone with an expression on her face that doesn't suggest that she's standing next to tannery and her coffin is ready.

  • emmalita

She always comes across as such a delightful person. I want her to be in more things so that we see more of her.

  • LittleMissPonderer

Not gonna lie. From the back, Robin Wright Penn is a dead ringer for a young Dolph Lundgren.

  • Art3mis

We have... very different taste in clothing, Cindy.

I quite liked Betsy Brandt's, I loved JLD's, I HATE Kate Mara's, and Uzo Aduba was one of my best dressed of the night. Much as I love Lucy Liu, that dress is doing her no favors. And although Jennifer Westfeld has done terrible things to her face, that dress is stunning and probably the only Marchesa creation I've ever really liked.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Yes to loving Betsy Brandt's. I love a big floral dress, like that Lucy Liu Carolina Herrera from a few years ago. And though I couldn't pull of that hemline, she's got the body and the ankles to make it work.

  • Art3mis

OMG, the Lucy Liu Carolina Herrera dress might be my favorite thing anyone has ever worn on a red carpet. That dress literally invaded my dreams.

  • Miss Kate

    And such kicky purple shoes!

  • BendinIntheWind

Betsy Brandt had me til you hit the hemline. Such a terrible length.

  • McConaughey's tux is fantastic. I love the blue and just taking a chance and being different. I've done a 180 on him. Dude is awesome.

  • dizzylucy

I like the simplicity of the gowns JLD chooses. Samira's was a fave, and I liked Uzo's a lot.
Lena Dunham's was easily the worst, possibly of the last decade.

  • Bananapanda

Am I the only one who sees "Albino from the Princess Bride"?

  • emmalita

I think if she had a different top she could have carried it off. She knows she isn't ever going to get on the best dressed list, so she'd striving for something different. That top though was too white, too shiny, and too close to her chin. I thought the hair was a great different look for her though. I didn't love the skirt, but she could have made it work better.

  • Emilie

i thought she got tagged last year for showing too much tattoo? that may have resulted in the change in direction.

  • emmalita

She's always going to get shit for what she wears, so she should make herself happy. But she doesn't look happy. I'd rather see her showing off her tattoos and looking happy.

  • Berry

I don't have a great handle on who Lena Dunham is as a person, but I think it's safe to say she's not that. And it looks like she knows it too, and is not happy.

  • Mrs. Julien

Plus Kaley Cuoco was there being visibly crazy.

  • Your point was made with "Kaley Cuoco was there." No need to beat the horse.

  • Berry

I have some notes (which should be taken with a mountain of salt, since I know nothing of fashion.)

Worst dressed: Agreed, apart from Christina Hendricks and Amanda Peet. To me they both look at least okay, although maybe Peet should have reconsidered her hair. Sidenote: Hendrick's gin is good.

Respect the breast: agreed all around, but at least Abuda's booty looks amazing, and she seems happy to be there.

Best breast: can't disagree on the boobage, but that dress is otherwise hideous.

Meh: Pretty much, although I think Anna Gun and Julia Louis-Dreyfus can still get it. Sidenote: where does the name dreyfus, three feet, come from? I wonder if wikipedia would know.

Almost there: Mostly agreed, but I hate that whole thing on Danes.

Best Dressed: That color is fantastic on Samira Wiley, but I wish it wasn't a mermaid dress. I irrationally hate that silhouette.

At first I thought Lizzy Caplan's getup was a little funereal, but I've changed my mind and love it with my whole heart now.

  • BrokenWindows

"where does the name dreyfus, three feet, come from?"

I heard her on a talk show many years ago say that she had a french ancestor named Louis Dreyfus. He decided to make the entire family name Louis-Dreyfus apparently just for the hell of it.

  • Berry

Trolling your descendants. I like it.

  • Berry

I ran out of steam for a while there, but let's continue.

I hate that thing on Prepon. Hate. She needs something sleeker. Laverne Cox looks pretty fierce, even though I don't understand that dress. Camila Alves needs a better lining.

Natalie Dormer is who I am in my dreams.

  • Natalie and Lena have never looked better, and that's sayin something.

  • emmalita

I loved Lena Headey's dress. She looked fierce.

  • mzblackwidow

Lena Headey looks best of anyone in my never humble opinion. Her hair with that dress - perfection.

  • emmalita

I loved the flowy grecianess of Laverne Cox's dress. The bad prom dress on Prepon was AWFUL.

  • Berry

I don't understand that "let's add a flap here, and a flap there" design, and it's doing her know favors. She's too statuesque for it.

  • Mrs. Julien

It was too much dress and too much eye make up.

  • Sara_Tonin00

and hair too dark. It looks like a cheap dye job. Which works for the character, but not so much on the red carpet.

ETA: it is also styled more horribly than I would manage on my worst long hair day.

  • emmalita

I thought Viola Davis was the best to her breasts, although she didn't feel herself up on camera, so fewer people may have noticed.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Eh, I feel like she always squooshes them.

  • emmalita

Maybe I've seen so many more egregiously squished boobs that hers look fine to me.

  • The lighting in the Kodak Theatre must be horrible. Folks don't look nearly as orange on the red carpet as they did during the telecast.

  • Bananapanda

Can we kill the middle part? It's doing no one any favors and seems like lazy hairdressing to me.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Yeah, I didn't love Hendricks' dress, but she looked pretty good...except for her head. That was decidedly ungood.
