I like the poster for The King's Speech, but I haven't seen the movie, because it's not playing within a 1000 miles of me.

Basing it on the posters alone I'd have to go with Black Swan for Best Picture and Nicole Kidman for Best Actress in Rabbit Hole. Blue Valentine gets snubbed simply for pretty much begging for an award.

Mark Wahlberg gets higher billing than Christian Bale?

Posted by: arrrghzi at December 8, 2010 10:06 AM

Look for Natalie Portman for Best Actress, James Franco for Best Actor, and the little girl in True Grit for Best Supporting Actress. So sayeth the posters.

Don't know who's gonna win but just about all those movies are on my Gotta See list other than Social Network and Inception just because those are the two I've seen. I would have put "Winters Bone" in there too. Maybe not for best pic, but definitely best actress and best supporting actor.

I don't know. Probably Bale will get a nod for The Fighter, but that's based on stuff I've read and not the poster.

On an un-Oscar note, does anyone else think that Nicole Kidman looks like Eileen Wournos in one of the slivers in that Rabbit Hole poster? Because I can't unsee it.

Damnit. I wanted True Grit to be the best. And it's pretty friggin' awesome. But something about 127 Hours mesmerizes me. Is it the colors? Is it the hint that this mountain is consciously trying to smash our protagonist? Is it the obvious reference to a clitoris betwixt nature's nethers (and if so, this guy has his work cut out for him cuz that's one massive clit)?

I dunno. But I DO know that The Town and The Fighter are least impressive. The Town's poster only tells me that ugly nuns think handguns are for pussies. The Fighter's poster suggests that there's a big plate of food to Christian Bale's left and something suprisingly confusing to Mark Wahlburg's right. I like to think it's a woman with a "Bun in the Oven" t-shirt with an arrow pointing at her protruding belly, only Mark can't believe science has advanced far enough to surgically install Kenmores into women's abdomens. The confusion threatens to overwhelm him.

How many damn posters does Black Swan have?

Posted by: valerie at December 8, 2010 11:02 AM

Tie: "Black Swan" and "127 Hours."

True Grit. Love the whole vibe, the dirty faces, the everythang.

Full disclosure: I have a Nicole Kidman blocker in my head (it's an aftermarket software) that protects my tender psyche from all things Kidman, because ew. So I did not really really look at the Rabbit thingy one.

If I had just emerged from a 6 month coma and I am basing my opinion SOLELY on the posters alone, knowing nothing of the films or their content...I'm going to have to go with Rabbit Hole on this one. The imagery indicates just the sort of agony and soul-crushing human suffering the Academy just can't get enough of. Also? Awkward, painful and heart-wrenching sex scenes between two aging (yet still beautiful) people is pretty much a guarantee here. Second choice would be The Fighter because Christian Bale + extreme physical transformation = Oscar. The Academy just loves them some pretty people fugging it up, don't they? And is it just me or is the Inception poster surprisingly uninspired given the material with which it has to work? It just sort of looks like they recycled stock illustrations from The Day After Tomorrow or 2012 or whatever.

As a designer I have wanted to make love to The Social Network's poster since it came out... no other opinion, just wanted to get that out there.

Any list that doesn't include "Winter's Bone" is totally bogus. So say I.

Maybe this is cheating considering it's supposed to be based solely on movie posters, but I saw a clip of the movie on Conan and I can tell you which one it WON'T be (for me, at least): RABBIT HOLE.

The clip was awful, just terrible. I hate that she is sharing screen time with Aaron Eckhart.

Kballs: Winner of Pajiba for that comment.

the King's Speech poster kinda freaks me out. I like me some Colin Firth but I can see all his pores in that shot.

Posted by: banana at December 8, 2010 1:49 PM

Well I guess it's good that most of them are good movies. Last year was pathetic. (excluding Inglourious Basterds of course)

Posted by: Theseus at December 8, 2010 1:55 PM

i truly believe Inception will win Best Picture, i dont see any of the others being movies we will remember the year by, except for Black Swan and The Social Network

Posted by: SilverMan at December 8, 2010 2:17 PM

Based on posters, it would be Rabbit Hole. It looks smart, moody, and polarizing based on the poster alone.

Posted by: Robert at December 8, 2010 3:39 PM

Man, rabbit hole looks like such a piece of shit front his poster, I don't even know what it's about and I hate it already...

The complete opposite goes to True Grit - it looks AMAZING...
