Playing Then And Now With The Cast Of 'Now And Then'
When it came out nearly 20 years ago (yeah, I know), Now and Then was a veritable who’s who of young 90s actresses. That kid from Addams Family! That girl from Hocus Pocus! The little midge from Uncle Buck. They were just one Anna Chlumsky short of a complete set. How are those girls faring now? What about their adult counterparts? And what, oh what, is going on with the boy next door?
Christina Ricci — Young Roberta
Of the four young actresses to come out of Now and Then, Ricci has had the most successful career. The switch might be about to flip, however, because Ricci is doing a Skype-based movie and a Lifetime film in 2014. Her co-star has some brighter prospects. That face though.
Gaby Hoffmann — Young Samantha
Hoffmann popped up just this last week on HBO’s Girls as Adam Driver’s deeply troubled sister. And she was weird and incredible. I love everything that is happening with Hoffmann these days. Particularly her eyebrow choices. She was also spectacularly off-putting on Louie last season and will be seen in four film in 2014 including the Veronica Mars movie.
Thora Birch — Young Teeny
What’s she up to today? Oh well read all about it.
Demi Moore and Rita Wilson — Samantha and Chrissy
Like Hoffman, Wilson has also snagged herself a role on Girls as Marnie’s overbearing mother. She also shows up frequently as a delightful villain on The Good Wife. Speaking of wives, we don’t like to rate the success of an older actress based on their love life, but we can’t help envy Wilson her choice in mates.
I said we don’t like to rate the success of an older actress based on their love life, didn’t I? So we’ll ignore the second coming of Kutcher. (Despite secretly crowing “get it, Moore.”) Demi doesn’t have a lot on the horizon other than an upcoming Western about a father and son starring Sutherland the elder and Sutherland the younger. Presumably she plays the love interest for Sutherland the Younger. I hope she gets to sling some guns herself and I’m not talking about those Pilates arms.
Melanie Griffith — Teeny
Griffith has two upcoming films one a Spanish-language thriller opposite her husband Antonio Banderas and one directed and written by her husband Antonio Banderas. Seriously, talking about ladies outside the context of their partners is proving harder than I thought. Griffith’s lovely daughter is, of course, starring in the upcoming 50 Shades Of Grey adaptation. Ugh, it really is like Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson all over again.
Rosie O’Donnell — Roberta
Listen, I’m not in the habit of posting unflattering photos of people. We all have bad days. But I sort of love these hideous selfies O’Donnell took this week to excuse a cancellation of her show. Not content to merely claim “abscessed tooth” she went and documented her swollen jaw. This is what your Mercury poisoning story lacked, Piven. Documentation.
Devon Sawa — Scott Wormer
Along with Shane West, Sawa had a happy home for a time on the CW’s Nikita aka the CW’s Home For Lost Crushes Of The 1990s. What’s next for Sawa? The SLC Punk! sequel nobody was clamoring for. Le sigh.
I’ll play you out today with a little Tony Orland and inappropriate, underage shimmying. Enjoy!
