Name that 90’s Teen Flick

A Pajiba Quiz / Dustin Rowles

Seriously Random Lists | November 12, 2008 | Comments (79)

1990’s teen flicks are one of the most discussed topics here around in these parts, besides — you know — comic book movies and Ryan Reynolds. Alas, Reynolds never starred in any 90’s teen films, just missing the cutoff with 2002’s Van Wilder. Anyway, here’s a quiz. I’ll give you the memorable line, you give me the movie. All the correct choices are set in or are about high-school or high schoolers and come from the years between 1990 and 1999.

It’s a short quiz, less than five minutes. So, have at it. Leave your score in the comments, and I’ll grant the winner a DVD copy of their favorite 90’s teen comedy. It’d be nice if you registered with the quiz folks so that we can verify your score, but it’s Pajiba — we work on the honor system.

How the hell is The Virgin Suicides considered a teen comedy?

For one to fully understand the powerful message behi...

Oop. Gotta make a dook...

1796. My goal in life is to graduate from high school, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die.

And I still have never seen Pump Up the Volume.

Posted by: Julie at November 12, 2008 2:10 PM

really a rather shameful score of 1256 what with all of the time i spent watching these movies but a score never the less.
huzzah time waste-y movie quizes!

These are my O.R. scrubs. O.R. they?

Made my day. 1343.

Posted by: becks at November 12, 2008 2:12 PM

I have no idea how in the hell I scored 1233. Also, are Heathers and Pump Up The Volume really '90s teen comedies?

Posted by: Nicole at November 12, 2008 2:12 PM

Hey Skitzi, how 'bout taking care of business before you sit down at the keyboard? Better yet, take your laptop with you so we can really share.

Posted by: Cindy at November 12, 2008 2:12 PM

Uhh, 912...I suck at these quizzes. I'm much better at Jeopardy. (Yeah, prove me wrong, punks!)

Posted by: meaux at November 12, 2008 2:15 PM

1270 - which I think is pretty good because I haven't seen about 3/4ths of those movies.

Rushmore is on this list? Just because it has a teenager in it doesn't make it a teen comedy, and I'm also a little skeptical about the "comedy" label.

meaux, I RULE at jeopardy.

at this, however, i fail. 931. *pout*

Posted by: lizzieborden at November 12, 2008 2:24 PM

Um, is there a joke I wasn't aware of? I hope so, because otherwise, I feel really crappy knowing that I missed a question that 206% of others got right. Oh, and I scored a humiliating 1089.

Posted by: puregonzo at November 12, 2008 2:24 PM

Mallrats was high school? I always assumed they were the same age as the Clerks characters, but I haven't seen it in years. 1276.

Posted by: Scourgie at November 12, 2008 2:24 PM

I met Alicia Silverstone a few weeks ago at an Obama surrogate event. It was weird, she seemed in this weird high/trance state that I'm assuming celebrities go into when they have to be chummy with complete strangers and she basically just mirrored what I said back to me. Nice girl, though. Plus I've seen the movie Crush. And we had beers and a group hug.

Posted by: jasper at November 12, 2008 2:24 PM

1948 not too shabby. God, Jawbreaker had completely slipped my mind until I saw that quote, now I have to go rent it.

The first time I tried to take the quiz I got like five questions in and it completely spazed out. Anyone else or was it just my computer? It was probably just my computer

Posted by: darwinfox at November 12, 2008 2:25 PM

used "weird" twice. go AP english

Posted by: jasper at November 12, 2008 2:25 PM

Well, I sucked at this. I blame my rural upbringing. My parents didn't have a VCR, but you could rent one (!) at the one place within a 100km radius that rented movies. When my parents did this, we weren't really watching Heathers and such. I finally got my own VCR around 1997, but movie rentals were still absolutely impossible to source. I've never been able to catch up on all of the movies I missed during my teenage-hood, as I'm trying to keep up with the ones coming out in my adulthood.

Poor me. PITY ME.

I am so disappointed in myself for missing the Empire Records question. I clearly have not seen that movie enough times in the past few years. It doesn't play every Saturday on USA.
Speaking of movies that do play every Saturday on USA, I dreamt that I was Elle Woods from Legally Blonds last night and I had to help some Frat house win some wierd skit competition. Wierd. Wonder if that means that I have Daddy issues.

Damn. 838. I lose. :(

Posted by: Snath at November 12, 2008 2:31 PM

1058 which is pretty good considering I was not a teen in the 90's and some of those movies I had never even heard of.

Posted by: wsapnin at November 12, 2008 2:34 PM

A paltry 1300. And Skitz, the proper internet symbol for making "a dook" is,

3---

Posted by: courtney 2 at November 12, 2008 2:35 PM

I do remember watching "Can't Hardly Wait" on a coach bus coming back from a school trip to an NHL game. Because, you know, school trips for hicks involve lengthy road journeys...with time to watch at least two movies on each leg of the trip. Sort of like a transatlantic flight, except a trans-boondocks bus trip. Ugh.

Posted by: kalafraja at November 12, 2008 2:36 PM

1633. Which is actually kind of shameful considering I own most of these movies (some on VHS, but still..)

Posted by: MG at November 12, 2008 2:38 PM

1825. The hell was that Merkin quote from??

Posted by: Illyria at November 12, 2008 2:41 PM

"...the proper internet symbol for making "a dook" is,

Huh? I don't underst... OH! It's poop coming out of a sideways behind! HA! ONE! One perfect sized poop, HA HA HA! TWO! Two perfect sized poops! THREE! Three perfect sized poops out of a sideways behind! HA HA HA!*

What the hell happened to Brittinnannity Murphy? Seriously - between the time Clueless came out and now, she's morphed into something strange. Not strange as in "exotic", but strange as in "why are there so many more bones and squishy parts than there were before?".

*reference from Sesame Street, a television show that used horribly disfigured monsters and pigment-altered humanoids to teach children how to count, say "water" in Spanish, and the potential life-threatening differences between "near" and "far".

Posted by: Skitz at November 12, 2008 2:48 PM

Meh, 1099, but I was totally, you know not trying or anything. So whatever.

The American Pie quote was apparently answered correctly by a whopping 246%.

Posted by: Macafee at November 12, 2008 2:50 PM

It was from Never Been Kissed. I always thought that was a cute movie.

*heehee* lizzieborden, I guess our massive Trebek-worthy trivia brains just don't have room for these paltry little movie quizzes.

That's what I plan to tell myself, anyway.

Yes, ma'am...but only if we can go to Vicki's Mystery and try on as many as needed to make sure it's the right one! ;)

I'm a good guesser.

Are "Rushmore" and "Bottle Rocket" really teen comedies, though?

Did the young people like Wes Anderson back then?

Posted by: Jay at November 12, 2008 3:47 PM

1628. Fourth place, bitches.

I'm still disappointed in myself though :-(

Posted by: Mimi at November 12, 2008 3:47 PM

Posted by: dsbs at November 12, 2008 3:51 PM

Oh well...

Posted by: 1246 at November 12, 2008 3:53 PM

1371. I'm a little embarrassed that this was easily my best quiz so far, but I take some solace in the fact that I haven't seen most of the movies and it was really my guessing skills and a lot of luck that carried the day.

Posted by: Eep at November 12, 2008 3:58 PM

Ugh, 503. In my defense, the small percentage of those movies that I've seen I watched a long-ass time ago (In a town called Kickapoo).

Posted by: the_wakeful at November 12, 2008 4:32 PM

485. I haven't seen most of these, so any points I got were totally guessed.

I can't believe I hit high fidelity when I wanted to hit Empire Records for the rock and roll heaven quote....My life is teen movies, I just need to be quicker on the draw

Posted by: Courtney at November 12, 2008 4:49 PM

Wait, which Courtney are you?

Posted by: Jay at November 12, 2008 4:56 PM

1257.

Although to be honest, the quiz isn't really about 1990's teen comedies, at least judging by the potential answers. Heathers and Say Anything came out in '89, The Breakfast Club was '85, and a bunch (Blast from the Past, That Thing You Do, Mallrats, Airheads, High Fidelity, Road Trip, Ever After, The Virgin Suicides, Election) either don't feature high school kids, aren't really comedies, or aren't about high school though they feature teenagers.

Therefore, I consider this quiz bogus.

Posted by: Ariel at November 12, 2008 5:20 PM

1668... respectable but I would have done better since these were the movies of my teenage years, which sadly ended in the early 1990's :-(

Posted by: Nipsy at November 12, 2008 5:28 PM

1036. I sucked, but I'm actually quite happy about that. I knew the ones from Bring it On, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Clueless, Election, and 10 Things I Hate About You, which are all totally awesome movies.

But I've never been a big fan of teeny comedies in general, so I'm glad I haven't seen most of these.

Posted by: figgy at November 12, 2008 6:22 PM

Jay, that looks like a third Courtney. Me and "courtney 1" are lower case...

Posted by: courtney 2 at November 12, 2008 6:46 PM

1268, which is my best score so far on these quizzes.

Also, I know it's been mentioned by you folks before, but how can 186% of the people have gotten question #1 right?! How does that happen? Are people taking the quiz many times? Is there an internal calculator messed up? I want, nay, NEED to know the correct percentage of people who got a question right so that I can decide whether to be smug or ashamed. My self-esteem hinges on it!

Posted by: luckycat at November 12, 2008 6:48 PM

807. Meh. I'm even mediocre at guessing. There was rarely more than one movie out of each answer block of four that I'd actually seen, and halfway through I stood at 0. I toyed briefly with the idea of trying to sustain that goose egg through to the end, but I couldn't even fail in style.

Posted by: Che Grovera at November 12, 2008 7:35 PM

1760. i guess i have to be faster, dammit, i only missed one.

Posted by: jamiepants at November 12, 2008 7:51 PM

I'm pissed that I also missed the Empire Records question. I guess I should turn in my Pajiba card now.

And wasn't Breakfast Club and Say Anything from the 80's? I want to file a formal protest!

Hmm. I kind of like the idea of my moniker being "local-courtney". Since we've proven time and again that fully 9 million Pajiba readers live in Atlanta or the Deep South, it would actually be pretty accurate...

793. I can't even remember which ones I've actually seen, but I know it wasn't during the '90s.

Posted by: JC at November 13, 2008 5:32 PM

Whomever says that Heathers isn't a comedy, should be shot. I'm just saying...

Also, I got 1663.

Posted by: hipstermongoose at November 13, 2008 6:03 PM

1299. Not bad, considering I was 13 years old when the 1990s ended, and thus many of these movies were before my time. Just about all of the ones I've seen and LOVE (i.e., 10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On) I remembered, though I did flunk the Buffy one, which is depressing given how many hours I've devoted to that show. (I know, the movie is a separate entity, but still...)
