In Praise of the Janets: TV Characters We Love Despite the Fact Their Shows May Not

Back in the beforetime of television, you could tell writers didn’t really care about characters when a) the characters acted only as the dull voice of reason, and b) were unattractive (it had to be both). But, now, we exist in a magical time where ugly people aren’t allowed on television, huzzah!, so it becomes harder to tell when a writing staff has nothing but utter contempt for an actor or character (until they kill said character off and then basically have the whole cast shit on them at their funeral).

But, for some, it’s not that the writers actively despise the performer or character. It’s just that they haven’t quite figured out what to do with them. You can tell they love them, but haven’t the slightest goddamn clue what to do with them, like when you babysit your infant cousin. And sometimes that’s okay. It doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the aimless, pointless ride.

For the following characters, we love them even though the writers are completely stupified by their presence.

Ann Perkins

rashida-jones-ann-perkins-e1299674248292.jpg

Honestly, even when Ann had something to do, she didn’t have much to do. I have to imagine that they just really liked Rashida Jones so much, they wanted her on the show. And we all like Rashida Jones so much, we want her on the show forever. It would just be so nice for her to, you know, do stuff. Even having her work in the same building didn’t help matters. Luckily, they seem to not really know what to do with Chris, so they’ll probably just get them back together. And give us more Ann/Ron interactions along the way.

Alex Kerkovich

tumblr_llg8u1b2cT1qikhz3o1_500.gif

Here’s the thing about everyone on this list: the casts of all these shows are so strong that it’s at times imperceptible just how useless some of the characters really are. Particularly when they make us laugh. But there seems to be a common phenomenon wherein a character starts out as the central premise of the show, then falls to the wayside when, after the central premise idea runs its course, they realize they have nothing else for this person. And that’s kind of where we find ourselves with Alex on “Happy Endings.” Luckily, the show is good enough that we don’t really even notice that Alex doesn’t do anything. And when she DOES do something, it’s golden (tranny Marilyn Monroe).

Ted Mosby

Ted-Mosby-how-i-met-your-mother-840537_720_480.jpg

For Ted, it’s kind of a different issue. They know exactly what to do with him. Unfortunately, they can’t do it for another season and a half. So, for the past year and until that point, we’re kind of just floating along, paying attention to everyone else’s stories while Ted just kind of tells them…Sagetly.

I know a lot of people hate Ted. And I might love him for those very same reasons. In real life, he would unwantedly text you and tweet you all the livelong day, ignoring any lack of reciprocity. But on TV? He’s a lovely romantic! Any girl would be lucky! He’s a pretentious asshat, reminding me of every fucknose I went to film school with. But on TV? He’s adorable! Quirky! He likes crossword puzzles and geeks out at Will Shortz! So until Ted meets “your mother” (which always sounds like the worst yo mama joke ever) we’ll just appreciate him for what he is. A complete tool. But the BEST complete tool.

Shirley Bennett

tumblr_ljqpzreirR1qd8045o1_500.png

Oh Shirley. God bless you.

Here’s the thing: the show has fleshed her out exceptionally. She’s a layered individual with a past and a personality and she’s often a scene stealer. But, despite all that, they still don’t know what the hell to do with her week-to-week other than Jesusy things. And that’s fine, I love those Jesusy things. Honestly, what it reminds me of most is Catherine on “NewsRadio” and it’s probably no accident that Catherine was also a black female character. The writing staff tries but lacks the worldview to give the character much to do. At least “Community” has some female staff members. Paul Simms and co. had to make do with a roomful of dudes (and, dammit, they did a fine job as long as they could).

Maybe another “Mixology Certification”-style B-plot for Shirley is in order. And maybe the return of Theo Huxtable will bring her some quality screentime. Either way, I’ll be happy and enjoy every last ounce of this show until they pry it from my cold dead hands. But if we can get a little extra Shirley before we have to say adieu, that would be niiiice.

So, the Janet in the post title is Janet Wood, right, cuz she was Chrissy's chopped liver, fer sure. She wasn't unattractive, but she was no blonde bimb-ette.

Posted by: nat at November 22, 2011 2:11 PM

But Chrissy was no Terri.

I thought of Three's Company, too. I find that sad.

I like Ted. The writers seem to have even less idea what to do with Lily. Plus the entire costume department seems to be involved in some sort of guerilla war with Robin and is trying to antagonize her with ugly and unflattering clothing.

Rashida Jones is cute and funny and deserves to be in every show that plays in my pants...DREAMS! I mean dreams!

Posted by: Fredo at November 22, 2011 2:33 PM

"tranny Marilyn Monroe"
------
UGH! "Tranny" is often used as a hurtful epithet against transgender individuals. Please remove it. I wish this word would become as taboo as the f word. Sadly pop culture and the general public seem to be blind when it comes to trans issues.

Posted by: severine at November 22, 2011 2:37 PM

I like both Shirley as well as Alex. But Ted is an asshole who has turned me off HIMYM. I hope the last episode will end in his funeral or something. Yeah, I hate him that much.

Posted by: severine at November 22, 2011 2:41 PM

My most favorite Rashida Jones moment ever was the episode where she made it her mission to get April and Ron to talk to her and she winds up winning them over with gross hospital stories. Such good stuff in that episode.

Posted by: JenVegas at November 22, 2011 2:43 PM

Stanley from The Office.

It took them a little while, but I think Community eventually figured out Britta really well. So I hope they can do the same for Shirley, if the show has a future. I think there's a lot to explore there. She, like Pierce, feels constantly left out because she doesn't have any potential romances (Britta-Jeff-Annie-Troy quadrangle) or bromances (Troy and Abed) to entrench her in the group dynamic. Pierce got the drug addiction and becoming an evil antagonist story lines to deal with his exclusion. What will Shirley get?

"Honestly, what it reminds me of most is Catherine on “NewsRadio” and it’s probably no accident that Catherine was also a black female character."

I would agree that it is probably no accident that they both happen to be black female characters, but the similarity is solely in YOUR mind and not a product of the writers.

Posted by: LwoodPDowd at November 22, 2011 3:31 PM

I dunno. Nothing against Rashida Jones, but I rarely like Ann. She's only worthwhile when she's in a scene with Leslie. "Shut your beautiful pie hole" sums it up.

Posted by: Mel C. at November 22, 2011 3:34 PM

Isn't Jeff a better Janet example on Community than Shirley? Shirley was never meant to be more than the Christian mother. Jeff was supposed to be a dashing douchebag lead who has not had a snip of worthwhile character development since the end of the first season. He's a one-note "look at me, you know that I know I'm hot" character, which is the better part of a scale away from his initial scheming character conceit.

Posted by: Robert at November 22, 2011 3:49 PM

So much to discuss!

severine: How is Ted an asshole? Boring and annoying I can see, and I understand if people can't stand him, but an asshole?

samantha t: Everyone from The Office.

LwoodPDowd: I don't think Courtney meant that Shirley and Catherine are alike as characters at all, just that they are both black women who the writers on their respective series can't figure out what to do with, probably because no writer on either show is a black woman and probably doesn't have a lot of interactions with black women. (Your handle still makes me smile every time I see it.)

Aw man, I know I'm far in the minority here, but I just LOVE Ted. It makes me sad because he'd been pushed so far in the background. Maybe I just identify with him the most, but I seriously do not understand the Ted hate.

"UGH! "Tranny" is often used as a hurtful epithet against transgender individuals. Please remove it. I wish this word would become as taboo as the f word."

As a member of the LGBT community, I feel the need to point out that this is insanely oversensitive.

Posted by: Craig at November 22, 2011 8:37 PM

I was just thinking yesterday, as I was finally catching up on last week's episode of "Happy Endings" that Alex is somewhat useless. It would be nice if they could figure out what to do with her.

I would like to also add to the love being thrown Ann & Shirley's way.

Posted by: tamatha at November 22, 2011 11:00 PM

Hi, Three-nineteen I shouldn't have been so hard on Ted. Mostly he's harmless. I was just thinking if this guy were my boyfriend I would think he's an asshole. That said, what I said about death and funeral is too much! I should have said he has asshole-ish tendencies. ;)

Craig, as a member of the LGBT community I'm offended so should anyone who care about human beings.

Posted by: severine at November 23, 2011 3:54 AM

Ann Perkins!

Seriously though, everything you say about how people would feel about Ted in real life is how I feel about him on the show. He's tolerable in a supporting capacity, like this week where he was mainly there to prop up Barney, but when he's the centre of attention...ugh. Fuck that guy.

Pierce got the drug addiction and becoming an evil antagonist story lines to deal with his exclusion. What will Shirley get?

Posted by: Cree83 at November 22, 2011 2:58 PM

Shirley nailed Chang AND Theo Huxtable and got knocked up.

Posted by: Bert at November 23, 2011 11:59 AM

Tranny. Tranny. Tranny. Tranny. Tranny. Infinity.

I'm all for gay everything - but COME ON. Being insensitive about using the word "tranny" is so gay.

Posted by: Mellany at November 23, 2011 12:00 PM

Wow, Mellany, how perfectly asshole-y. I wasn't even going to comment because I don't watch any of these shows, but like many who frequent this site, I'm a fan of most of the comment threads.

Your comment needs to die painfully. You don't get to tell people how to feel about a word that affects them. Just because it doesn't offend YOU doesn't mean everyone else should just lighten up. Seriously, wtf kind of person are you? I'm seriously asking, not for my benefit (because I don't know you, and therefore don't particulary care too much), but for yours.

You have a right to free speech, and you have a right to take responsibility for it, too. I'm not LGBTQ, and that comment that I won't be quoting offended even me. Way to drag down the level of discussion here.

Posted by: Rest In Peace at November 23, 2011 1:39 PM

And I would totally be on board with the offensensitivity if the word "tranny" were not in constant use BY members of the LGBT community, particularly in drag culture.

Posted by: Craig at November 23, 2011 4:27 PM

Craig , there is an obvious difference with a marginalised group using a word that has been used to insult/belittle them for decades and the majority culture appropriating it for 'coolness' or whatever. Straight people, gay people or non-trans identified groups have no right to use that word just as it is with the 'n' word and the 'f' word.
Words and terminology need to be openly challenged for a more inclusive, less hateful world.
I'm a cis-gender, queer woman and I do not use the word 'tranny' because it is offensive.

Posted by: severine at November 23, 2011 4:58 PM

Ditto Craig. I'm from Long Beach, CA and have so many friends and a few family members who are proud members of the LGBT community. I have yet to hear anyone chastise anyone else for using the word tranny. I wish I had time to apologize, but I'm too busy planning a funeral for my comment.

Posted by: Mellany at November 23, 2011 9:01 PM

Wow, Mellany, you're absolutely ignorant about the history of the term. This is like saying something racist or homophobic and saying "But but my best friends are gay/black". If you consider yourself a friend of the trans community do some research. Here's a good rule to go by: Don't use the term "tranny" if you aren't transgender. It's simple courtesy and respect. Your privilege is showing here.
Here's a link which explains the problems with the term:
http://www.bilerico.com/2008/09/is_tranny_offensive.php
There are many such all over the internet. A google search would suffice.

Let's not forget Alex had one of the best lines of all time, 'Good news guys. Whatever I have, it's not from that bird I kissed.'
