Hollywood's 5 Blue Valentiniest Celebrity Couples

By Dustin Rowles | Seriously Random Lists | September 12, 2012 | Comments ()

Anyone who has seen Blue Valentine knows exactly what I'm talking about, and if you haven't, do yourself a favor and read Courtney Enlow's searing account of her own almost Blue Valentine relationship. It's those couples that are meant to be together, but who are often too self-destructive for one another, or for some reason just can't make it work.

Now, look: I understand they're celebrities. They are people we don't know, and we have no right to really be invested in their relationships. But sometimes, they so represent the kind of fairy-tale relationships that we all want to emulate that, when they break up, it has a silly way of affecting us personally. Don't ask me why; it just does.

Here are the 5 Blue Valentiniest Celebrity Couples.

Ryan Reynolds and Alanis Morisette 2002 - 2007

Amy Poehler and Will Arnett 2003 - 2012

Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon 1988 - 2009

Cameron Crowe & Nancy Wilson 1986 - 2008

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder 1989 - 1993

"He was so desperately in love with Winona, that when they broke up, he wouldn't admit it was over for the longest time." -- Tim Burton

  • That photo of Depp kissing Winona's nose is adorable. I find him less detestable at the moment. But, I'm sure he'll ruin it soon with some floppy ensemble.

  • FrayedMachine

Man, I've been in one of those relationships before and I don't get the appeal. Like... at all. They're terrible. They drive you absolutely crazy. Admittedly, my boyfriend is the same guy I had said tumultuous insane relationship with, but after not speaking to each other for over a year and simply trying to reconnect as a means of making peace after we both had time to deal with our own personal demons, we are now quite happily (more than happily) involved in a very (read as VERY very very) normal, balanced, relationship. We've both changed and grown up a shit load and have actually managed to go about this for going on a year now (which is the longest we'd ever been involved previously) without any kind of crazy, unbalanced, hectic and obscene incidents.

    So yeah.

I would never change happy balanced relationship for passionate and intense relationship ever.

  • PrincessPiglet

wait, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins split up?? In 2009?? How did I miss this? I must have blocked it from my memory.

  • Austie

ummm...Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor anyone??

  • I want Winona to come back.

  • Leelee

Oh Johnny. Remember when you used to wash your hair, and be generally off-beat and quirky without being creepy? Those were good times.

  • Urbanbuffy

I would have put Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams on this list. Ryan Gosling on his relationship with Rachel: "We both went down swinging."

  • Sara_Tonin00

I tend not to like the phrase "meant to be together" - it's never really made sense to me. Kinda like "soulmates" - an pseudo-romantic teenage-lust -fueled concept.

I will say, though, that Depp/Ryder as a pair make so much sense.

  • Maybe it was Depp's chain smoking?

  • TheReinaG

I'm still holding out that a Depp/Ryder reunion is a thing that will happen.

  • His penchant for too many flowy scarves and ridiculous hats has rendered him unworthy.

  • are there more pictures of the depp/ryder couple than the other top fivers?

  • Carlito

Are you asking a rhetorical question?

  • yeah, if there had been any funny, it all got lost without the intonation. it should have sounded like a sneaking suspicion with a side of farcical.

  • $27019454

I always order my farcicals on the side.

  • $27019454

See, I'd put Will Arnette's smile in the "creepy" category from the below article.

  • AngelenoEwok

Every now and then my husband and I will be watching something that depicts a particularly PASSIONATE! and TUMULTUOUS! relationship, and I'll be like, "Do you ever wish we were more like that?" and he'll be like, "No way," and I'll be like, "I agree." Then I go back to my Pinboards and he goes back to Lexulous and we continue being super calm and boring together and it's awesome.

  • Gine

Exactly. I think that's a big part of growing up--realizing that relationships can actually be, you know, FUN and happy and nice, and that love doesn't have to be melodramatic to be real.

  • Samantha Klein

Yep. I had one of those, and it still haunts me, but I wouldn't trade my family for it.

  • thenchonto

Sad losses-this-year Oscar tribute music began playing in my head as I scrolled through this list. Why, you crazy kids? Why? Where did it all go so wrong?

  • Brown

Just think all of the Tim Burton movies Winona could have been in.

  • luckypete

Just what I was going to say. The Depp-Burton conspiracy

  • Melina

    wino forever.
I think I loved them together too.
