5 Shows After Dark 10/15/12 | Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Wormer

Mara Wilson is MATILDA not Madeline. Matilda was substantially cooler.
Also, I've heard that Fairuza Balk is doing just fine being chums and hanging with Neil Gaiman. Totally jealous.

  • Gellarfan666

Mara Wilson does web videos and stuff. She has a cool Facebook page.

  • growler

Since 2009, Mira Sorvino has been UN Goodwill Ambassador to Combat Human Trafficking. It's a cause she takes super seriously, and is always trying to bring attention to (She even made a movie about it with Dermot Mulroney). I'd say that's notable.

  • Stephen Wong

Am I the only one who started to sing the Full House theme song?

  • Don't worry, Fairuza Balk is still fully employed, starring in my nightmares.

  • KatSings

You have Mara Wilson listed as in Madeline. She was Matilda. :-)

  • Strand

Leelee Sobieski. I remember when her name was actually spoken in movie trailers "Starring Leelee Sobieski, mostly because it's an odd name... but she was pegged to be the new 'It Girl.' Her career completely flatlined and before you know it, she was in Uwe Boll movies and getting kicked by Nic Cage in Wicker Man.

  • e jerry powell

Who was it that was trying to make Sobieski happen? I forget.

  • Gina

For anyone who's familiar with Polish history, it's a great name...

  • Alicia Witt's also currently working on a music career. She'll be playing at the Viper Room on Nov 2nd (something I only know cause a friend will be performing with her).

  • e jerry powell

Because she is fucking awesome. She deserved so much better than Cybill Shepherd for a mother and DeeDee Pfeiffer for a sister. Both could have been replaced by Michelle Pfeiffer.

  • Enrique del Castillo

There's Mara Wilson, reviewing Matilda with a movie reviewer; quite entertaining to see her opinion on the movie and the book.

  • Gina

    Until they invoke Rule 34...

  • Arran

That was great! Borderline shocking to see her as a grown-ass woman, since she disappeared from the public eye about 15 years ago.

  • She was HILARIOUS in that. It made love "Matilda' even more!

  • NY not NYC

Okay it honestly wasn't until the little movie pic of Madeline that I figured out if the captions were above or below the pic. Guess I didn't know these folk even when I should have. . .

  • BierceAmbrose

Fairuza Balk - Killed in a horrible eyebrow-pencil accident.

Alicia Witt - I somehow have nothing but good thoughts about her fashion choices.

Rebecca Gayheart - In a spiral of career regret after alienating The Master, she & hubby are shopping increasingly-inventive "leaked' sex tapes in a race to the - er - bottom against Jerry O'Connell+1, and Josh Duhamel+1.

Jennifer Tilly - Gets a lifetime pass for "Bound", times another for "Earth Girls are Easy."

Hatty Jones - Who is this person?

Mara Wilson - Singing again with Chynna Philips.

Mira Sorvino - Abducted by Templars. That "made for TV" movie was a documentary if you know how to read the code.

Bridget Fonda - Being awesome, somewhere.

Natasha Henstridge - Went back to Tralfalmadore.

Dana Carvey - Lost in central American jungles on a quest for his mojo.

Renee Zellweger - Is trying to become a "thing." It's working backwards.

  • zeke_the_pig

I KNEW Hendridge was a Tralfamadorian

  • e jerry powell

    +100000000000 for Vonnegut.

  • That was Geena Davis in "Earth Girls are Easy", another lifetime pass, though.

  • BierceAmbrose

    Upon investigation, you're right.

Jennifer Tilly played something like the Geena Davis in "Earth Girls..." part in the lesser known "Remote Control." Her best line -- "I want to do it again." -- is burned into my brain.

Really, her delivery was awesome, with a kind of emphatic bounce that few can master.

  • BierceAmbrose

    Lifetime pass remains, however.

  • Fabius_Maximus

I think Zellweger has some movie or series on Lifetime or somesuch.

Last I heard of her, Jennifer Tilly is a professional poker player. And not a bad one, IIRC.

  • Natallica

Also apparently a vampire, since she just DOESN'T age

  • e jerry powell

Maybe she just bathes in the virgins' blood, rather than drinking it.

  • $27019454

Seriously? God. I love her. That is uber-cool.

  • Wembley

Dana Carvey had a botched heart bypass surgery, It took 4 more procedures to fix. I think he gets a pass for that.

  • e jerry powell

Four angioplasties in addition to the double-bypass (on the wrong artery). Sued the shit out of his cardiologist, too.

  • Erich

$7.5 million, and he donated it all to charity. Very awesome of him.

  • zeke_the_pig

    He probably infact gets a...BYpass.
    That's it, I'm done.

  • Dana Carvey (Last Notable Sighting: “The Dana Carvey Show”)

Yeah. I think you answered your own question, there.

  • e jerry powell

I saw him on the news hanging out with some Bush or another.

  • Patrick the Bunny

Who in the world is that in the header pic?? Dat stomach. My god.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

Downvoters, I'm pretty sure the stomach thing is a compliment.

  • Patrick the Bunny

It absolutely is a compliment. Should have clarified. Thank you Mr./Ms. Tailor.

  • e jerry powell

    Bridget, in better days.

  • hs21

Literally just saw Jennifer Tilly on Modern Family! I love her though I don't think she actually "Went Away"

  • jmd

Well MEG Tilly is in that show on REELZ - Bomb Girls
And Mara Wilson was in Matilda, not Madeline

  • e jerry powell

Yes, but for some reason, no one's terribly concerned with the whereabouts of the less popular sister.

  • Slash

Well, Jennifer Tilly apparently does pretty well on the pro poker circuit (no joke). And I think some of the women had kids. That tends to eat up a lot of time, from what I hear.

  • Sara_Tonin00

I saw her on Broadway a couple of months ago. Show wasn't great, but you know, she's keeping herself busy.

  • e jerry powell

I mean, no 4AM call times. Poker players don't roll out of bed until ten-ish. Now sleeping with her boyfriend (poker pro Phil Laak) would give me pause. I still like to think of Tilly shacked up with Gershon somewhere.

  • thatgirl

Mara is a pretty normal human living in New York. She has a pretty cool blog and twitter, she's a playwright, and she really hates Ira Glass.

  • Bedewcrock

Why does she hate Ira Glass?*

*I realize I could Google this but I'd like to hear the opinions.

  • Jezzer

I read an interview with her a couple of months ago. She got burnt out on film altogether and had no interest in the Hollywood rat race, so she finished school and concentrated on theater because she genuinely loves acting.

    *sniff* We'll always have "Matilda."

  • Bodhi

She hates Ira Glass? I didn't know that was possible; off to find her blog...

  • Bodhi

It doesn't seem like she HATES him, hates him. I glad he apologized, though, & I think it would be awesome if she were on a show

  • sistercoyote

Fairuza has been making beeswax candles, if Neil Gaiman is to be believed...

  • Ravyn S

She updates her facebook account every so often. Always happy hippy type posts.

  • Kristen

Fairuza is all over Celebrity Ghost Stories. I'm sorry that I know that.

  • Blake

Alicia Witt - Friday Night Lights?

Fairuza Balk - I only really associate with Gas, Food Lodging not Almost Famous (Anna Paquin stole that one).

    Whatever happened to Navi Rawat?

  • Princess Di

Haha! Fairuza was barely in Almost Famous and was the funniest thing about it. I love Anna Paquin dearly but she was terrible. Almost Famous is my favorite movie by the way.

  • BierceAmbrose

I saw her being psycho on Burn Notice, what two seasons ago?

  • gunter

I saw Renee Zellweger in an embarrassingly bad campaign ad on Hulu last week.... I knew the soccer mom looking very earnest might be her only after i noticed her name posted on the screen

  • Rooks

Except for Balk and Zellweger: Who on earth are these people? Does not knowing (or caring about) them make me a bad person? Or worse, an uninformed eejit who hasn't earned the right to be a part of the pajibaverse yet? Am I illegitimate?
This post has seriously undermined my sense of self. Or maybe that was just the effect Renee Zellweger's condescending, malfoy-esque sneer had on me. (Please tell me I'm still worthy...)

  • BierceAmbrose

Who on earth are these people?

VERY IMPORTANT CELEBRI-TOOTSIES who define the cultural zeitgeist and stuff. We get all our insights about science and big ideas about how shit works from people chosen because they're hot (and possibly good at pretending to be someone else.)

Does not knowing (or caring about) them make me a bad person?

No. You are a bad person already. Not knowing just confirms it. Welcome to the dark side. Help yourself to a drink.

Or worse, an uninformed eejit who hasn't earned the right to be a part of the pajibaverse yet?

"Uninformed", "eejit", or "uninformed eejit" are obviously not deal-breakers round here.

    Am I illegitimate?

I've been meaning to tell you - um - you might want to sit down for this...

This post has seriously undermined my sense of self.

Well then, our work here is done.

Or maybe that was just the effect Renee Zellweger's condescending, malfoy-esque sneer had on me. (Please tell me I'm still worthy...)

It's called "Zellwigging." They're trying to make it a thing. (Sure Garth. You're worthy.)

  • e jerry powell

    *golf clap*

  • cinekat

I completely zellwigged when I got my last gas bill. Had there been a mirror nearby it would have shattered.

  • e jerry powell

You should send Kathy Griffin a video of that.

  • Rooks

"No. You are a bad person already. Not knowing just confirms it."

Okay, let me rephrase then: "Does not knowing (or caring about) them make me an even worse person?" Apparently, the answer is 'no, not really'. That's comforting.

"Welcome to the dark side. Help yourself to a drink."

Yet, I distinctly remember being promised cookies upon signing up for the dark side...

  • BierceAmbrose

Or course we they lied. We're They're the dark side.

Also, Luke's mom came up pregnant after a Jedi barn dance, so nobody really knows who his father is. Yep. Lied about that too.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

The cookies were a lie. The dark side only serves brownies.

  • Green_Eggs_and_Hamster

The brownies are a lie. On the plus side, there will be cake.

  • sardonical

Well... Alicia Witt had a pretty decent reoccurring role on the last 2 seasons of Friday Night Lights. Not a huge role, but a memorable one as Becky's sexy drunk slutbag of a Mom.

  • e jerry powell

I still confuse her will Prepon and Ambrose, so I was about to say something like the Coma remake.

  • MissAmynae

    THAT's who that was!!!!

  • She is pretty. Was that redundant?

  • becks

I think most women would agree that sleeping with Tim Riggins is notable.

  • $27019454

All I know about Bridget Fonda is that she is married to Danny Elfman which seems like a really interesting and excellent and dare-I-say-enviable career choice.

  • Bedewcrock

Seriously. That and Point of No Return.

  • Some Guy

I wondered about her a few weeks back and check it out. Apparently she had a bad car accident sometime right after Lake Placid and seriously messed up her neck. Because of the extent of her injuries, she retired from acting.

  • Maguita NYC

It always surprises me how much people know and remember about little celebrity details!

Also, there must be a certain moral to this story linking movie making like Lake Placid with good actresses like Fonda...

  • withnails

  • Yup, his wife died and he left the business to take care of his kids. Which makes him more endearing when I rewatch My Blue Heaven for the 800th time.

  • Aaron Schulz

pretty sure he officially retired actually

  • He retired. Which sucks. Although not as much as Gene Hackman retiring. But still. Yeah, Rick Moranis.

  • $27019454

Wow. You mean some one actually left this business voluntarily and with dignity? I love Rick Moranis even more than I did. I and I loved him a lot. "Nice doggie. Cute little pooch. Maybe I got a milk bone..."

  • Puddin

One night I got drunk by myself and was convinced that Rick moranis died, which made me really sad. Then I googled him and found out he retired, which made me happy. Then I read it was so he could raise his kids after his wife died, which made me sad again.

I had a point, but I lost it in this delicious glass of brandy that I am currently enjoying. Alone. Ummm, I'm sensing a pattern here and need to rethink some life choices.

  • e jerry powell

    Good father is good thing.

  • Kirstini

Had a hunch, did a quick Wikipedia search: in almost every case, the answer is "babies". Although as a Scot I'm deeply disturbed to learn that Natasha Henstridge is now married to Darius Danesh, the embarrassing dude with the ponytail from Pop Idol (like American Idol, but less American) in 2000: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • amylu

Well Rebecca Gayheart killed a child...

  • $27019454

    Ugh. Bitch.

  • amylu

Ok, so the vehicular homicide incident happened well before she appeared on "Dead Like Me," but I don't doubt that it negatively impacted her career to some degree.

  • Person

Yep. I was thinking the same thing. But didn't seem to bother Brandy...also she is married to Eric Dane (McSteamy) so she might just be busy having his kids.

  • Natallica

Wasn't she also busy doing threesomes with McSteamy and some other chick? I think there are pictures, maybe even a video. (Also, I almost posted this on the thread where people were talking about Rick Moranis. That would have been surreal)

  • e jerry powell

Yuppers. Sad to say, I was not especially impressed with naked McSteamy.

I never thought I'd say that.

Anyhow, I think that video counts as eligible for her acting reel somehow.

  • JenVegas

and also suing uh...some next door neighbor celebrity for letting his tree fall on their house during a storm....wasn't that a thing like a week ago?

  • amylu

The next door neighbor she's suing is Billy Corgan.

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

Nobody misses Rene Zellweger. I'm sure that every morning, she looks in the mirror and feels a twinge of disappointment about being Rene Zellweger. Like "Oh. Me. *Sigh*".

  • There'll Be Pancakes

You shut your whore mouth! Everyone in Empire Records gets a pass, a pass forevermore

  • firedmyass

In my mind, I like to think that she spends all her time now surrounded by a dozen cowboy hat-wearing chihuahuas. They are all named "Kenny."

  • Natallica

Can she actually look at herself through those perma-squinty eyes?

  • Ashley

Is there a limit to how much a person can like this comment? I hope not.

  • no one

I actually like Rene Zellweer. But that was funny.

  • PDamian

I don't miss any of the above except for Fairuza. She was awesome in American X.

  • Re: Dana Carvey

I'm assuming "Master of Disguise" is officially in the bin labeled "Must Not Be Named"?
