Glorious Euphoria Is My Must: The Top Five Shows to Look Forward to This Summer

By Cindy Davis | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (52)

As Seth mentioned, these days, fall television isn’t much to get excited over—especially when it comes to new shows. From what rumblings are out there, pilot season is going to be yet another disaster. But between now and then, we still have summer and while most people think of it as a television wasteland, there are a few gems that should at least land on your DVR:

“So You Think You Can Dance,” May 26th, Fox

janettebrandon.jpg

Of all the dancing and singing competitions, “SYTYCD” is the best there is. Hosted by the stylish and sweet Cat Deeley, follow along with the best of the b-boys as they blow away expectations and check out the phenomenal ballroom dancers working through a Nappytabs routine. Then try to make sense of Lil “C’s judging comments or Mary Murphy’s screeching and make fun of Adam Shankman when he cries at every other routine. “SYTYCD” is my favorite guilty pleasure.

“Expedition Impossible,” June 21st, ABC

EXPEDITION-IMPOSSIBLE.jpg

The only new show on the list, “Expedition Impossible” is the latest Mark Burnett adventure competition that will hopefully bear resemblance to his previous “Eco-Challenge” series. Follow thirteen teams of three as they race around the world, stopping to solve problems along a ten leg journey. Burnett says it will bring “an epic Indiana Jones-style experience to the viewers.”

“True Blood,” June 26th, HBO

season-4tb.jpg

Vampires and faeries and witches, oh my! Season 4 of “True Blood” has been dubbed the Season of the Witch (loosely following Charlaine Harris’ Dead to the World) and will feature Harry Potter’s Fiona Shaw as Marnie. As long as we get to see more of Eric and Pam and Lafayette and Pretty Jesus and Jessica and Hoyt, who cares what they’re doing…bloodsugarsexmagic me up.

“Torchwood: Miracle Day,” July 8th, Starz

torchwood-miracle-day-starz.jpg

I know, I know. Like the first time you heard about peanut butter and bananas, your gut tells you it will be a disaster, but there is also the possibility that something good may come of it all. And who are you kidding, you know you’re going to at least try it. Captain Hotty McHottyPants, Jack Harkness! (Maybe he’ll see sweet Ianto in his dreams?)

“Breaking Bad,” July 17th, AMC

walt-jesse-lab.jpg

I don’t know how Walt and Jessie are going to climb out of that deep, deep pile of shit they are in, but I do know I’ll be watching THE BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION. (Go ahead, try to argue.)

Honorable Mention:

“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” July 10th, HBO

rickyGervaisCurb.jpg

Larry David is the biggest and funniest asshole there is. I can’t help myself, I have to watch.

"The Top Five Shows To Look Forward To This Summer"

40% of this list may grace my flat screen. The other 60% can munch fuck.

Posted by: admin at May 11, 2011 2:58 PM

I know Pajiba is over it, but I can't wait for Burn Notice. The previews look great!

Posted by: Mel C. at May 11, 2011 2:59 PM

PAMMMMMMMMMMM!

That's all I've got.

Posted by: Scully at May 11, 2011 3:02 PM

OMG I'M SO EXCITED FOR SYTYCD. Ridiculously excited. I'm thrilled Mary's back (and yes, I realize I'm the only person on the planet), and I can't wait for Li'l C's craziness and to see Mark back and more of Travis's choreography and hopefully Wade will do some more stuff this year because I missed him last year.

Also, True Blood, even though I haven't seen s3 yet (it's pre-ordered!).

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 11, 2011 3:03 PM

So is Sarsgard the star of the show now? Is it because that other guy can't act?

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at May 11, 2011 3:07 PM

Also, I wish I had Starz.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 11, 2011 3:09 PM

Anna von Beav- YES! MORE WADE! That man is a genius. I'm excited to have Mary back too. She's insane and shrill, but it just wasn't the same without her. Are they doing the all-star thing again? I wasn't a huge fan of it, but if it brings Pasha back into my life, I can deal.

Posted by: Mel C. at May 11, 2011 3:10 PM

Also, also, also, the rest of Game of Thrones, lest we forget.

Posted by: Adam at May 11, 2011 3:13 PM

So is Sarsgard the star of the show now? Is it because that other guy can't act?

Eric is the star of the books, you just have to get through the first three books with dullard Bill to get to the good stuff. Bye bye Bill. Yay!

(You may have read them, I dunno.)

Posted by: Carrie at May 11, 2011 3:17 PM

I haven't read the books and I never got past the first episode of the show so the clarification is appreciated. It must be kind of like the Anne Rice books where you have to get past Louis (was that his name?) to get to Lestat.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at May 11, 2011 3:21 PM

I unabashedly love SYTYCD. I can't wait for it (and all it's shirtless eye candy) to return.

I really hope that Miracle Day lives up to Children of Earth. That's pretty much why I stuck with Torchwood.

I feel like an addict myself waiting for Breaking Bad to return. Maybe that's part of their marketing strategy or something, but I will stab them in the gut with a broken bottle behind the OTB if they change the air date again.

Posted by: jM at May 11, 2011 3:22 PM

I like the books much more than the show, and found the first series quite painful, but the second was better and I'll watch the third when it's on dvd (or when it gets sent to me if it's out already). Mainly cos I can't wait to see what they do with Sookie and Eric. And watching Bill's pained expression.

Posted by: Carrie at May 11, 2011 3:30 PM

New Torchwood makes me nervous.

SYTYCD is best enjoyed with company and sadly I've lost my company for the show. I need to remember to go back and at least watch all of the numbers this year. I started tuning out the judges (for the most part at least) years ao.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at May 11, 2011 3:32 PM

I canceled STARS a few months ago to try to bring my cable bill under control, and now I regret it. Anyone know if they plan to share the new Torchwood with Netflix Instant Watch, like they have done with other series?

Posted by: Drake at May 11, 2011 3:44 PM

She's insane and shrill, but it just wasn't the same without her.

I'm surprising even myself with my agreement here.

Posted by: Todd at May 11, 2011 3:46 PM

I'm ever so excited for SYTYCD, for all the reasons everyone's already mentioned. Plus, isn't Alex coming back? He's got to reprise the Taboleon (I prefer that to NappyTabs) routine. You know the one.

I'm also excited for Expedition Impossible. I used to watch every Eco-Challenge when it was on, and dreamed of actually trying one some day. There's now way I could ever do it, but I was totally fascinated with what those people put themselves through.

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at May 11, 2011 4:10 PM

TABOLEON. That is genius, Captain Tuttle.

Y'all have no idea how I excited I am that Pajibans love SYTYCD as much as I do. My mom and I are obsessed. We even saw the tour.

Posted by: SJ from SJ at May 11, 2011 4:23 PM

Mary's shrill, but she knows what she's talking about. The reason I love SYTYCD so much over all the other contest-style shows is that the judges (even pervy Nigel) know what they're talking about, know how to articulate it (even if it doesn't always make sense LI'L C), and are really good at CONSTRUCTIVE feedback ('pitchy' is not a thing, and not useful; nor is telling everyone they're great all the time).

And OH YEAH! I forgot Alex was coming back. EEEEEEE. Now I'm even more excited, because that kid is just AMAZING. Thank you Captain Tuttle (and also thank you for this: Taboleon (I prefer that to NappyTabs), because YES).

@Carrie, s3 of True Blood comes out May 31st.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 11, 2011 4:29 PM

EEEEEEEEE!!!

Team Eric!

Bloodsugarsexmagic says it all.

Posted by: MRod at May 11, 2011 4:29 PM

OH! And Mel C., I really, really hope they do more of a mentoring thing instead? or something, because it was great to see those guys back, but it's much harder to tell how the newbs are doing when they're dancing with someone who is by this point a semi-professional to professional level dancer. It's good for them to have the more experienced person there, but their performance in some cases suffers for it - it's hard to watch some kid who's not as good when she's paired with Twitch, whom your eye is just drawn to.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 11, 2011 4:33 PM

SYTYCD, you complete me. I LOVE that show. LOVE. Hopefully it will be available online this season like it was last season so I can actually keep up with the eps. Quick Poll: Who will cry more this season: Shankman or Mia? I am going with Shankman.

Posted by: Lindsey with an 'e' at May 11, 2011 4:38 PM

TOTALLY Shankman. Though Mia will be a not-distant second.

Also, I am SO GLAD I have DVR now. I can watch them OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 11, 2011 4:39 PM

@Carrie, s3 of True Blood comes out May 31st.

Thank you!

Posted by: Carrie at May 11, 2011 4:43 PM

Hosted by the stylish and sweet Cat Deeley

She must not have been over there long, or in enough stuff to bug you to death, cos she's well annoying. Especially her 'swish swish' hair ads.

Posted by: Carrie at May 11, 2011 4:45 PM

Don't forget this season of Eureka is Felicia Day flavored....mmmm....

Posted by: John W at May 11, 2011 4:51 PM

There are two for me: True Blood and Weeds. The rest of the TV time will be filled catching up on The Borgias, The Tudors, and probably Dr. Who. Also need to finish Deadwood. I haven't seen season 3 yet.

Eric sort of looks like Jason in that heavily photo shopped promo poster. Even for True Blood that's pretty wrong.

Posted by: TylerDFC at May 11, 2011 5:00 PM

w00t! on the Red Hot Chili Pepper lyrical title here, I was singing the song in my head all the way to here.

I want Torchwood to be on par with Children of Earth... but the complications presented by the outpouring news makes it hard to not lower my expectations. Though truth be told by the time I watched Children of Earth the bar was at a startling easy level after watching the previous seasons (series whatever) that all I could do was marvel at the monumental steps the series had taken. As well as think, it couldn't be this good while Owen and Tosh were still on? For Pete's sake I had just started to like Owen! But I'll reserve judgment for when it comes out.

As far as True Blood goes, I only stick with it for Lafayette and Jessica. The fact that Lafayette should have died going by the books and his presence was so strong they decided to keep him speaks pretty high. The crazy antics that are important for the 3 main characters for me have never been as "wow I wonder what will happen next" as it is for the supporting characters... with the exception of that whole Maryanne subplot... I now start to wonder if I would have been so entertained by Jason Stackhouse's stint with the Church of Light if the Maryanne thing hadn't been there. Season 2 is the only time I kinda like his character, season 1 I hated him, and season 3 I just didn't care for him as much as I had previously. Eh we'll see, I don't even know if I'll see it until after the season has already concluded much like I did last season.

Psyche, baby. Love me some Shawn and Guster.

Wonderful Pam, glorious Pam!

WAIT ALEX IS COMING BACK TO SYTYCD?

My boyfriend just broke up with me, and that bit of news is making me feel so much better.

Posted by: That Girl at May 11, 2011 5:40 PM

I concur with James. I need me so more Psych. Like now.

Posted by: Zach at May 11, 2011 5:55 PM

Anna- I would prefer them in a mentor role as well. I love seeing the chemistry that develops between newbies, and some of the all-stars are so damn magnetic that I can't take my eyes off them whenI should be looking at the new crew.

So glad Alex is coming back, but my all-time favorite contestant is Danny Tidwell. I'm thinking the chances of him ever coming back are slim, but that would be AMAZING.

Posted by: Mel C. at May 11, 2011 6:03 PM

SKARSGAAAARD!

This is gonna be a good summer.

I just hope that SYTYCD doesn't do that stupid thing they went with last year where they had the "All Stars" dancing with the current contestants, and switching partners every other week. Also I hope the judges rotate more frequently.

Posted by: Figgy at May 11, 2011 6:29 PM

Bheeeel!!! Oh Bheeel! I am so Team Bheel!!! Sookeh can have Eric Stone-Face.

Bheeeeel!

I love summer!!!

Posted by: klingonfree at May 11, 2011 6:34 PM

just waiting for true blood. Yup me and the other guy.

Posted by: logan at May 11, 2011 6:42 PM

Team Bheeeeeel? But he's so whineeeeeeeeeeh!

Posted by: Figgy at May 11, 2011 6:42 PM

Drake, I was just wondering that myself (whether Torchwood would be on Netflix Instant). Some quick googling seems to suggest that there'll now be a 90 day delay in showing any original Starz programming on NF Instant.

http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2011/03/starz-is-delaying-new-original-shows-new-releases-on-netflix-90-days.html

So, now we have to wait until Oct to see it (legally)...

Posted by: GreenMyEyes at May 11, 2011 7:01 PM

the stylish and sweet Cat Deeley

I suppose technically having awful style is still having style...

Posted by: SaBrina at May 11, 2011 7:01 PM

Squeeee! Can't wait for True Blood to come back. My housemate started watching it and now she's way into it as well. Can only be a good thing!

Also, Expedition Impossible? How will anyone be able to complete it?

Posted by: Sage at May 11, 2011 7:27 PM

i'm done with true blood. however, i will miss pam and eric and lafayette and awful lot.

love breaking bad but maybe they should have ended it after season three. think about it.

i only saw the third season of torchwood so i'm eager for the miracle day. jack is hot!

Posted by: splinter at May 11, 2011 7:30 PM

Figgy! Yeah he's whinee and I hope whiney Bheel goes away and hot as hell Bheel comes back. I think he wheel now that Sookeh has kicked him to le curb.

The man crawled out of the ground ready for action. He's a slam dunk (oh. a pun.)!

Posted by: klingonfree at May 11, 2011 8:09 PM

I just finished the books recently and can't believe how much they lamed him up from his book self. He was badass in the books! He didn't spend days whining about his fate as a vampire. He wasn't Edward Cullen Part 2. He was a VAMPIRE.

Posted by: Figgy at May 11, 2011 9:35 PM

Since there are so many SYTYCD fans, we should have a weekly Pajiba recap, yes/yes?

Heh, heh, heh...

Posted by: admin at May 11, 2011 11:25 PM

YES! I want a SYTYCD weekly recap, pleaaaase!

I know that:

- Mia will not be on the show this season except for MAYBE one or two choreos.
- No All-Stars this season, back to Top 20.
- Style or no style, Cat is the best presenter on TV hands down!

I've heard that:

- Alex might not be back as, as of last month or so, he was still not 100%. And even if he were, I'd wait one more year if I were him. Don't rush your recovery, child!

Posted by: PP Matter at May 12, 2011 2:47 AM

The way Breaking Bad ended last year has to be one of the greatest end-of-season cliffhangers of all time!

I have to say ... the look on Mike's face when Walter transformed from blubbering chemist he was about to pop, to ruthless chessmaster, right before his eyes ... Priceless!

"Your boss is gonna need me!"

Posted by: MurderBot at May 12, 2011 5:17 AM

Heh, heh, heh...
Posted by: admin at May 11, 2011 11:25 PM

What are you laughing at, Mister?! I think it's a FINE idea.
