First Peek at "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.": Five Things You May Not Have Heard About This Week

Happy Mother's Day! Here's your Important Stuff.

5. We Were Reminded of Charles Dance's Pre-Tywin Lannister Days.

Portraying the ultimate "Game of Thrones'" patriarch requires gravitas and solemnity, and Dance does it brilliantly. But we mustn't forget, he's got another side, and it is fiiiiiine. Shake it Tywin!

4. A Fancy New Man of Steel Poster Hit Twitter, a UK Teaser Showed New Footage, and Calendar Images Were Revealed.

There are some films that, the more footage you see, the more unsure or concerned you feel over how the full version is going to turn out (I'm talking to you, Star Trek Into Darkness), but Man of Steel is not one of them. The more we see, the better it looks. Bring on the SuperCavill.

3. A New Star Trek Into Darkness Featurette and Clip Confirmed Nothing Interesting Happens without the Cumberbatch.

This is what I'm talking about, people...the scenes we've so far been privy to have featured Benedict Cumberbatch's "mystery" villain menacing Kirk and Co. amid ominous music and explosions. And while that may be enough to assure blockbuster ticket sales, I already have the feeling Star Trek Into Darkness is going to be a dud. These clips do nothing to assuage my apprehension.

2. The Powerful Fruitvale Station Trailer Debuted.

On the other hand, Ryan Coogler's debut feature--which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance--can't get to my local theater fast enough. Based on the true story of Oscar Grant, Fruitvale Station stars Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand and Chad Michael Murray, and (after heading to Cannes) opens July 16th.

1. Seven Seconds of Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Footage Was Released (Leaked?), Then Quickly Yanked. (But I found It...shhhh.)

Agent Badges:

(Clark Gregg) "Agent Phil Coulson is the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, the "everyman" in a universe full of superheroes. Every day he's somewhere doing something for S.H.I.E.L.D. He knows how to stand his ground but doesn't take life too seriously."

(Elizabeth Henstridge) "Agent Jemma Simmons deals with biology and chemistry, she's a bit of a nerd and spends most of her time with Leo Fitz (who she trained with)."

(Ming-Na Wen) "Melinda May is a pilot, weapons expert and soldier who is "Soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences." and is known for going beyond the call of duty. Also known as "The Calvary," this hard-core soldier, she has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot but her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged. (Character previously known as Althea Rice)"

(Iain De Caestecker) "Agent Leo Fitz is skilled in the technical side of weaponry. He's a nerd and has a sibling like relationship with Jemma Simmons."

(Brett Dalton) "Agent Grant Ward is a highly skilled "rising star" known for being deadly, precise and cool under fire but apparently not so good when it comes to dealing with people with a tendency to botch interpersonal relations. He's a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he's the kind of guy that grows on you."

(Chloe Bennet) "Skye is fun, smart, caring and confident with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm. She is slightly obsessed with superhero culture and the shadow organizations that exists within it. She's edgy and can out-talk anyone with her unflappable nature."

The guerilla footage is from a group called the "Rising Tide" (see last photo under badges); the domain was registered by Disney. Not much information as yet, but a first look at "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will air during (possibly right before) tonight's season finale of "Once Upon a Time."

*Updated: Here's the promo that aired during "OuaT":

I love the agent badge height information vis-a-vis the group picture. Standing next to the women, it seems unlikely that any of these midget men are taller than 5-6 or 5-7, yet the shortest guy is listed at 5-8. Typical.

  • zeke_the_pig

'I already have the feeling Star Trek Into Darkness is going to be a dud'

    It is.

  • No matter how much it'll break my heart - and it will - I'm so here for Fruitvale Station.

  • Eeesh. So SHIELD stars the four blandest-looking people on the planet, and Clark Gregg?

  • Tinkerville

That was my first thought as well. Luckily Clark Gregg's good enough to carry everything on his own, but seriously? They couldn't look any blander if they tried.

  • Welldressed

I know many of you may consider it tokenism, but I wish there was a little more diversity in the SHIELD cast. I'll still be watching it though. Sigh.

  • Buck Forty

What are you talking about? Didn't you see they cast an Asian?
I can't wait for the 'me love you long time' gag...

  • Welldressed

    A whole Asian? Well Gooooolllly!!

  • Buck Forty

    I know!! it's 2013, we've made great strides...!

  • TheGreatUnstainer

Star Trek Into Darkness was released early in Australia. I went to the midnight screening: it is amazing and I had high expectations. It is to the Star Trek franchise what the Gospels are to the Old Testament.

  • Ben

Saw star trek on friday, it was pretty awesome you guys.

  • I get the look they were going for with that Man of Steel poster, but it looks more like a fly got squashed in the printer.

  • Wembley

Well, the drinking game seems obvious.

Every time one of these "highly skilled/crazy skills/skilled" weapons experts flinches when firing a gun-take a drink.

    Your survivors have my commiserations.

  • TheAggroCraig

Coulson's description reads like a dating site profile.

  • Reading those character descriptions, all I could think of was Uma Thurman's description of the characters in her failed pilot for 'Fox Force Five' in 'Pulp Fiction.'

On a related note, I knew a girl named Melinda May when I was younger. She was the Chickasaw County Rattlesnake Roundup Snake Charming Queen. Won blue ribbons for her melons, too.

  • koko temur

I had to do a double take on that last picture on the account of those "spots".

And i have to respectfully disagree with you on star trek. I think the feeling of its possible suckitude comes not from overexposure but from the insistence of everyone involved (and the media) calling cumberbatch a " villian", in quots, or "mystery villian". Jesus, its such an obvious possible twist, everyone will be just focusing on hints and/or revailation instead of anything else in the movie. And then complain about it. Just lie to us, producers, its ok.

  • clancys_daddy

    KHANNNNNNNNNNN allfreaking ready.

  • Aaron Schulz

I assume you mean cavalry as in mounted reinforcements, not calvary the site jesus of nazareth was crucified at

  • Mitchell Hundred

Or Calgary, the Canadian equivalent of Houston/Dallas/some Texan city.

  • SpaceRaptor

Oh man, I'm from there and that's an incredibly apt description of Calgary.

  • Sirilicious

Or, calvary as in "an experience or occasion of extreme suffering, especially mental suffering", seeing how she's all mentally damaged.

  • Those descriptions are in quotes, meaning *I* did not write them.

  • koko temur

Although if you did, you surely would have done a better job than that shite.

  • Daniel Valentin

The exciting thing about Agents of SHIELD is that, being a TV series, it'll have episodes week after week on national television. You might be saying "No duh", but here's the thing: it means that Phil Coulson will receive more exposure to a larger audience than the Avengers have through their movies.

Yes, officially, Phil Coulson is now the face of Marvel Comics. I am SO okay with this.
