You forgot the albino actor in "Blade Runner".

12 greatest or the first 12 you could come up with?

Posted by: Malware at August 12, 2011 12:12 AM

BULL.
SHIT.

"Foul Play"

Posted by: Jay at August 12, 2011 12:21 AM

What? No albino from Foul Play?

Posted by: HW at August 12, 2011 12:29 AM

Love whitey from MM&I!

I'm not generally one to jump on someone for authoring this kind of thing, but I've got to call foul on this particular SRL. Albinism is seriously misrepresented, underrepresented, and misunderstood in media representations. Around the world, people use this very rare genetic difference as an excuse for doing truly awful things to people with albinism (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/08/world/africa/08albino.html?pagewanted=all ... for example) and in this country people with albinism are treated like freaks. It's not that I take issue with you presenting this list, because I know you're not necessarily backing these media representations, but I do wish you could have taken this space and this chance to maybe say something about these representations, fill in some information, offer up some food for thought. My partner has albinism and honestly, I get really sick of explaining who and what he is all the time. I get sick of people making jokes, whispering behind our backs, or throwing milkshakes at him (and yeah, that has happened on multiple occasions). So seeing this list unfortunately feels like just more of the same. Honestly, Dustin, I'm really not trying to shame you or anything like that, and I know you weren't being insensitive or rude. But it's important to remember that disability, even this disability, affects real people with real lives and is about more than just images.

At least he doesn't live in Africa.

Posted by: Protoguy at August 12, 2011 1:51 AM

Is this post because of all the racism talk yesterday?

Not white people y'all, the whitest people.

Posted by: John G. at August 12, 2011 3:09 AM

Wow M, your partner has had it rough, huh?

My best friend has albinism, as do all his siblings. He hasn't had that experience. I've known him for over twenty years since his pre-teen years, and he has never had things thrown at him. Yes there have been whispers and requests for explanations, but luckily he has been blessed with patience and an amazing personality. I've accompanied him to national and international "Albino-Cons" and have met many incredibly well-adjusted people and their families.

Sad that you don't seem to have the same comfort level with the general populace. Where in the hell do you live?

Posted by: krix at August 12, 2011 3:26 AM

I work for an albino.

"What did we do with the wheel barrow the albino had?"
"I think we left it in the woods."
"Then why didn't you list that among our assets?"

M, it sucks that your partner has to go through that. It probably doesn't help that albinos are so often used as evil characters in movies. At least there's Falcor, but maybe it would be better to have more good HUMAN albinos.

Skitz is gonna burn your house down for this.

Posted by: PissBoy at August 12, 2011 8:20 AM

How could you possibly forget Dar Robinson as Mokey the albino hitman in Sharky's Machine (1976)?

While not a true albino, The man was a real life stuntman who was thrown out of a Georgia skyscraper firing his gun as he went down. They actually threw him out of the building with a rope tied around his ankle and a pulley system to prevent him from dying horribly. They CGI the heck out of stuff like that now.

He not only should have been on the list, he should have been #1.

Posted by: anderbot at August 12, 2011 8:46 AM

i second jay's foul play, the albino that gave me nightmares as a child.

Posted by: gp at August 12, 2011 8:51 AM

@andrebot Plus Dar invented that rig he was wearing to slow his fall to a stop. He, and other stuntmen/women, used it for several films.

If I ever divorce my otherwise wonderful husband, I will cite his deep and abiding love of the cinematic abortion that is "Gummo" as my primary complaint. If the judge watches five minutes of it, I'll get custody of the kids, the house, the bank accounts, and a restraining order.

Posted by: Heather Mooney at August 12, 2011 9:40 AM

Skitz is gonna be DOUBLE furious when he gets to number 1.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at August 12, 2011 10:05 AM

Oh dear. Gummo. That movie scares the shit right out of me. I watched it ONE TIME and that is all it gets. I can't. No. Those people. Too frightening.

Posted by: ssarah at August 12, 2011 10:29 AM

As soon as I saw the title of this post, my first thought was, "Skitz is going to kill Dustin!" Poor Dustin, being murdered couldn't happen to a nicer guy. And then I saw number one, and well, it was nice knowing ya.

Posted by: tamatha at August 12, 2011 10:30 AM

When I saw this title, I mentally shouted, "FOUL PLAY!" I'm relieved to see I'm not the onyl one upset at it's exclusion. And shame on you for Gummo. #nightmarefuel

Posted by: Patty O'Green at August 12, 2011 10:52 AM

This is a safe space, people. It's okay to lighten up.

Posted by: branded at August 12, 2011 10:58 AM

Um, what's with the Skitz killing Dustin over this list in particular?

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 12, 2011 11:10 AM

You forgot: EVERY character Gary Busey's kid plays. Deeply creepy. The whiteness ... and so. much. teeth.

Posted by: tar at August 12, 2011 11:34 AM

"Skitz is gonna burn your house down for this" - and - "Skitz is gonna be DOUBLE furious when he gets to number 1,"are both entirely correct.

Now, I suppose the easiest way to do this would be for you to contact me directly in regards to your address (as well as directions), the hours you typically spend sleeping, and the location of the gas station closest to your house. Make peace with your God, because I'm coming.

I just need to make sure I can get time off of work. Unless you'd be willing to pay for my time off, which considering the circumstances, would be downright noble of you...

Posted by: Skitz at August 12, 2011 12:50 PM

Mrs. Julien, a decent portion of Skittimus Maximus's time is devoted to loathing albinos. The remainder of his time is devoted to loathing Gummo and everything about it.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at August 12, 2011 1:35 PM

Homer : Wait a minute, Skinner. How do we know some principal over in France isn't pulling the same scam you are?
Skinner : Well, for one thing, you wouldn't be getting a French boy. You would be getting an Albanian.
Homer : You mean all white with pink eyes?

I echo the childhood appreciation for the Foul Play villain. Years later, when albinos complained about The Da Vinci Code, my political correctness would clash with that appreciation.

By the way, I am Albanian, so I'm allowed to make Albanian jokes.

Oh, and FALKOR?!?

Posted by: DarthCorleone at August 12, 2011 1:59 PM

If the adaptors hadn't fucked up "The Relic" Agent Pendergast would be on this list. On the other hand, I think I heard once that one of the early scripts changed his ethnicity from "hyper-pale Louisiana French" to "standard African-American", so there you go.

Posted by: Maureen at August 12, 2011 3:56 PM

Ummmm ... yeah. Notwithstanding all of the Skitz-relevant angst already posted, I'm gonna side with M on this, only because I got a bit of guilty pleasure with this list and then I read M's post and immediately felt like a turd.

So, yeah, um this whole thread has a bit of bigotry to it, doesn't it?

Yeah. It does.

Posted by: Johnnyboy at August 12, 2011 8:27 PM

Oh man, I'm sorry if I made anyone feel bad. I really don't want to seem like I'm being hectoring or guilting or self-pitying (or partner-pitying, as it were). And I don't want anyone to feel bad about having enjoyed this list. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being amused by these characters or movies or anything! I just meant to say that, you know, it sucks when someone is called "an albino," as if they are a different class of human and not a person with a particular genetic trait; it's like when people talk about "the gays" or "the blacks" as if they're a monolithic hive-mind creature, not individual folks. And it sucks when all the people with albinism that we see are treated like freaks (the evil albino characters from the end of 10,000 BC are another example). And it sucks when people forget that these images are associated with real people. And it would be great to see those issues raised in a space like this one.

I like a lot of these movies (Falkor has a pretty great spot in my heart) and I have no problem with the idea behind this list; I just think that, if a list like this is going to be made, it calls for a little more information or analysis, a little depth, and not for a "list presented with no comment or context" presentation. Which I say because this site and the writers have shown me time and again that they can create that kind of nuanced, rich analysis and I'd love some of it thrown my way. I'm selfish like that.

Krix , my partner is delightful, well-adjusted, and super happy. We have a great life and have lived all over the West Coast where (as is true everywhere) some people are lovely and some people are jerks.

I hope I didn't imply that my partner's albinism has doomed him to a life of horrors and tribulation; it hasn't and he lives relatively unhindered by rudeness, sunscreen, and thick eyeglasses. I hope I did imply, however, that the small amounts of attention paid to this condition and community is perhaps related to the large amount of stares and confused reactions we get in public. And to the feelings of "loathing" that some readers have towards "albinos": I am not saying this to call anyone out, but I think it's important to make gentle mention of that fact that if you say you loath all people with a certain kind of trait, you're treading on dangerous ethical ground; we're talking about real people here, folks, even if there aren't that many of them.
