At the end of last week, we devoted a couple of posts to football, in honor of the NFL’s opening weekend. I feel that it’s only fair that we now devote a post to the sideline portion of that equation. Thus, I give you the 8 best cheerleaders in film.

Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) — Can’t Buy Me Love

Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) — American Beauty

Darcy Sears (Ali Larter) — Varsity Blues

Priscilla (Jamie Pressly) — Not Another Teen Movie

Missy Pantone (Eliza Dushku) — Bring It On

Buffy Summers (Kristy Swanson)— Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Edie Stall (Maria Bello) — A History of Violence (NSFW)

Megan (Natasha Lyonne) — But I’m a Cheerleader

I would like to add the Conan O'Brien-obsessed Cleo, as portrayed by Melissa George, from one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies, Sugar & Spice.

I'll say it again...History of Violence contains THE SINGLE BEST sex on stairs scene ever.

A "famous quotes" montage from "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Varsity Blues" in Japanese?

You've outdone yourself, you magnificent asshole.

I know her character wasn't actually a cheerleader, but the first one that came to my mind was Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Death Proof. Tarantino wins for egregious use of a cheerleader outfit.

Amy Adams in Drop Dead Gorgeous?

I should expect "Bring It On" by now, but the rest seemed pretty reasonable. I always appreciate appreciation of Ms. Swanson.

Give me Brooke Langton from The Replacement any day over any of these.

Sandy in Grease. My first ever exposure to the American Title IX effort to find something for busty blondes to do that might be called a sport.

@janet

I think 9.5 weeks had a good stairs scene, too. Or was it more of an alley? I think water was involved... might have to re-watch that one.

Cybill Shepard. Last Picture Show.

How about the cheerleader who forgot her panties in "The Hollywood Knights"?

IMDB doesn't list them separately, so I don't know the actress's name, but her image is burned onto my brain.

How on earth could you forget that one with the pregnant cheerleader-turned-bankrobber? Oh, what was that called again?

I was so hot for Amanda Peterson for decades until I realized she was one of the orphans in "Annie". Then it just became inappropriate.

I'm a day late to this thread, but, dammitjanet and Yossarian, I just have to ask: There are better sex-on-stairs scenes than the one in The Thomas Crown Affair?!

Posted by: Neon at September 14, 2010 12:23 PM

@elsie That would be Sugar & Spice. A movie I recently rewatched and still completely enjoyed (James Marsden's presence didn't hurt, either).

I also second the Amy Adams love in DDG. Classic.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong!

The best group of cheerleaders to ever appear on the big screen were the lovely ladies in Debbie Does Dallas. I expect this list to be fixed to include all the cast of this classic and wonderful movie.

it had to be you, dustin

What about Kirsten Dunst in Bring It On? Or Jordana Brewster in The Faculty?
