Actors We Hate Strongly Dislike in Roles We Love

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (118)

SarahJessicaParker456.jpg

I think that this post feels more like a comment diversion than a Seriously Random List, given how subjective our strong dislike of certain actors is, so consider the five listed examples below as a starting point for a diversion about “Actors We Strongly Dislike in Roles We Love.” (Hate feels a little over-strong today.) That is to say, rather than begin your comment with, “I can’t believe you left off ________ in ______, you fucking cock-slobbering douchevillain. I will burn down your house with your family inside, you insufferable simpleton!” maybe just offer your own examples relative to the actors that you dislike. It makes for a much more enjoyable exercise, and I won’t have to post guards outside my house.

Keep in mind, too, that I’m referring to roles you love, not roles that you tolerate or think are decent enough. I mean: Reallyfuckingdig.

5. Sarah Jessica Parker in L.A. Story

4. Tom Cruise in Collateral

3. Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl

2. Ben Stiller in Zero Effect

I love that scene in Collateral...

I would never say anything like that. I don't believe in punishing children for their parents mistakes.

Toby Mcguire in Spiderman. I just can't stand Toby.
Drew Barrymore as Julie Goulia.

Colin Farrell in In Bruges.

Before "In Bruges" I had only really seen Farrell in "Alexander" (not good), "Daredevil" (bad), and "Minority Report" (he was pretty unforgettable, I thought). He also sounded like a complete jack-ass off the screen, so I never really cared for him or understood his appeal.

But he was so great in "In Bruges" that I decided I had to re-evaluate what I thought of him. That said, I don't think I've seen him in anything else since then.

Kate Hudson: Almost Famous

Posted by: Withnails at June 24, 2010 3:11 PM

Oooooooooooooooooh I have a list of this which is SO long.

Posted by: Nadine at June 24, 2010 3:13 PM

I agree on Kate Hudson in Almost Famous. My personal addition is Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tennenbaums

Posted by: Siege at June 24, 2010 3:16 PM

Forbiddendonut - Farrell is also very good in A Home at the End of the World - definitely worth checking him out in that.

Russell Crowe in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Ben Affleck in Dazed and Confused

Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused

Jim Carrey in The Truman Show, and Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting.

Man, Kirsten Dunst in just about every fool thing.

Mandy Moore in Saved!

Posted by: Caroline at June 24, 2010 3:21 PM

Kirsten Dunst was great in Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Michelle Williams was fantastic in The Baxter (I don't care if you all love her, I intensely dislike actresses who always look sad or delicate or close to tears. Woman-up dammit!)

Michael Pitt in almost everything he's ever done because I think he's quite a good actor but I despise him!!!! OH GOD HOW I DESPISE HIM!!!!

Posted by: king at June 24, 2010 3:22 PM

Sean Penn in Fast Times. I LOATHE that self righteous prick.

5. Scarjo in Ghost World
4. Drew Barrymore in the Wedding Singer
3. Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tennenbaums
2. Salma Hayek in Frida (because what other performance of hers is of any note?) I can't lie that I also enjoy Fools Rush In but I would not say that performance, or movie, is noteworthy.
1. I have to say Tom Cruise has entertained me in pretty much every movie I have seen him in (Born on the 4th of July, Risky Business, Tropic Thunder...etc.) This is not to say I would ever want to be alone in a room with him.

Honorable mentions go to Renee Zells in Chicago and Kate Hudson in Almost Famous (though I have not seen The Killer Inside Me.)

Posted by: le.sel.de.mer at June 24, 2010 3:25 PM

I don't anyone who hasn't seen it will believe me, but Hayden Christenson is GREAT in Shattered Glass, and Keanu Reeves is hillarious in I Love You to Death. In both cases I suspect they were behaving (as an emotionally stunted cypher and idiot, respectively) as opposed to acting, which is probably why they are so good in each yet so awful in everything else.

And I second the Russell Crow/ LA Confidential nomination. Other than that movie (and to a much lesser extent, Gladiator) I think he's criminally overrated.

Posted by: Irving Washington at June 24, 2010 3:25 PM

Adam Sandler in Spanglish.

Posted by: Soda at June 24, 2010 3:27 PM

Let me just say that my suggestions were written before I saw the comments, and now I feel dumb since the good ones were already mentioned.

Matthew McConaughey in "Dazed and Confused" (H/T myjetski)

Russell Crowe in "Gladiator"

Billy Bob Thornton in "Bad Santa"

Every French Person in "Amelie"

Burt Reynolds in "Deliverance" (he is and always will be a doucheclot)

Evan Rachel Wood - Across the Universe

Evan Rachel Wood - The Queen in True Blood

I really really dislike Evan Rachel Wood.

forbiddendonut,

Completely agreed with this: "But he was so great in "In Bruges" that I decided I had to re-evaluate what I thought of him."

Posted by: Jen at June 24, 2010 3:42 PM

Sweet Krav Maga moves by Cruise in Collateral. I've never seen that, but now I want to.

Posted by: Dangerous Dave at June 24, 2010 3:44 PM

griffimx, me too, she is one obnoxious chick, but I'm loving her on True Blood.

My vote is for Renee Zellweger in Empire Records, Chicago, and Bridget Jones's Diary. All movies I adore, but I truly cannot stand that woman.

I'll also second Russell Crowe in L.A. Confidential

Posted by: Even Stevens at June 24, 2010 3:47 PM

Tom Cruise in Magnolia

I agree with Colin Farrell in In Bruges

How does anybody hate Jim Carrey!!!! He's amazing and his incredible performances in Eternal Sunshine and Truman Show just made him more amazing!! I know he's a bit quirky in person but come on.

Definitely Toby in Spider-man (1 & 2)

Renee Zellwegger in anything.

Gwynyth Paltrow in anything.

Tom Cruise in anything. (I actually used to enjoy a few of his movies.)

Jennifer Aniston in anything.

Julia Roberts in almost anything.

Mel Gibson in almost anything (in the Mad Max movies, I can sort of forget who he is).

What really gets me is that I have all these DVDs for movies I ONCE enjoyed but now that one of the major players is a douche/scary evil demon/asshole/or once they are just totally overexposed to me with their sympathy plea stories (I'm eyeballin you Aniston--well, plus never that good of an actress anyway), I can't even watch the damned movie anymore. Can't enjoy it at all. There they sit.

So, you know, THANKS FOR EVENTUALLY RUINING SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE FOR ME PALTROW.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at June 24, 2010 3:56 PM

Not a tom cruise fan, but his character is the best part of Magnolia.

I think everyone hates Michael Rapaport, but he is so loveable as Dick in True Romance.

I also have an irrational hatred of John Turturro, but The Jesus is a great character.

Posted by: Josh at June 24, 2010 4:00 PM

1)My biggest one is Jack Black in High Fidelity. I really dislike the guy but man he was so perfect in that.

2)Salma Hayek in Frida, because she was just perfectly cast, and didn't strut around in a bad accent and no clothes in that one. She actually got to ACT.

3) Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love. For once he didn't make me stabby. I actually LOVE him in that.

And YES to Kirsten Dunst as a cheerleader. I love everything about that damn movie.

Posted by: figgy at June 24, 2010 4:02 PM

Bridget Fonda in Lake Placid. Hate her in everything else.

Interestingly, according to IMDB, she hasn't appeared in anything since 2002.

Posted by: humperdinck at June 24, 2010 4:03 PM

King - I too hate Michael Pitt with the fire of a thousand suns. I went to NYU with him. He hit on every girl there, me included and was just incredibly creepy and greasy. Also, men with pouty lips in general upset me. He looks like his mouth is always wet and slobbery. Just thinking about him makes me want to shower. Yuck.

Irving Washington - So right on as to Hayden Christenson. I love that movie...

Okay, all that said, I'm going with Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson's War. (Don't start. I can't stand that smug son-of-a-bitch!)

Posted by: rhombus at June 24, 2010 4:03 PM

I will NEVER dislike Gwyneth, all because of what she did in Shakespeare in Love. I adore that movie beyond anything.

Posted by: figgy at June 24, 2010 4:04 PM

Val Kilmer in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I'd like to think that he really is Gay Perry in real life, and not some washed-up, bloated, snarky meatbag who appears in every fucking direct-to-DVD feature.

Posted by: penelope at June 24, 2010 4:05 PM

Oh! Brad Pitt in Snatch, Fight Club, and that one episode he did of King of the Hill. I hate just about every other movie he's done, but oh man he kills me in that movie.

Posted by: figgy at June 24, 2010 4:05 PM

Don't forget Sarah Jessica Parker in Hocus Pocus. Then again, since this site has admitted to hating Sister Act with a vicious and uncalled for April Fool's Day post, I doubt that film fairs any better round these parts.

Posted by: Robert at June 24, 2010 4:10 PM

King: Agreed on the hate.

Agh. If you put Leonardo DiCaprio in a blender and set it to "Creep", you'd get Michael Pitt.

Posted by: penelope at June 24, 2010 4:14 PM

Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire
Scarlett J. in Ghost World
Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones's Diary
Orlando Bloom in the LOTR trilogy

Posted by: Snrub at June 24, 2010 4:16 PM

Robert Downey, Jr. in Ironman.

I guess I'm the only one who can't stand RDJ. I don't get the love AT ALL. I think he's the worst ham in Hollywood. But damn if I didn't enjoy his performance in Ironman.

Posted by: jimbob at June 24, 2010 4:17 PM

Stop listing Tom Cruise. He's been in dozens of movies that we've liked him in. Top Gun, Tropic Thunder, Mission Impossible, Valkyrie, Risky Business, Minority Report, etc., etc.

Posted by: Obediah Crumfeld at June 24, 2010 4:19 PM

Will Smith -- well, "hate" is a strong word, but he and his entire smug family annoy the poo out of me most days. But I thought he was great in "Men in Black."

Also, if someone else hadn't mentioned Hayden Christensen in "Shattered Glass" first, I would have had to. He nailed the shit out of that role.

Posted by: Another Kate at June 24, 2010 4:22 PM

Even though I agree with Obediah that we've about OD'd on Tom Cruise, I will say that I love him in Vanilla Sky, precisely because he's actually just playing himself: a vapid, spoiled and egocentric playboy who expects the entire world to revolve around him.

It's probably his most honest role (though I'm sure he doesn't see it that way).

Posted by: Jacktrade at June 24, 2010 4:27 PM

Ahem.

If I may.

Jennifer Lopez, in Out Of Sight.

BOOM!

Posted by: TK at June 24, 2010 4:32 PM

Shia Labooof in Constantine (does it count if it's before we started hating them?)
Jessica Alba in Dark Angel
Hayden Christianson in Shattered Glass
Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls
Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight (TK beat me, dammit)
Kristen Stewart in Adventureland (even though she can't keep her goddamn hand out of her hair)
Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys

Posted by: jM at June 24, 2010 4:43 PM

Ooh... Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys is an excellent call. I will postpone your execution.

Posted by: TK at June 24, 2010 4:45 PM

Kirsten Dunst only found room for one decent acting performance, and that was Interview With the Vampire. Other than that, her best role was Eternal Sunshine, but she sucked the life out of her lines, so I don't know if I'd count that.

Likewise, Drew Barrymore only ever did one thing that I liked, and that was Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, though she has possibly the smallest part she could possibly have ever.

Also, Cameron Diaz isn't horrible in Vanilla Sky, which is the only thing in which she isn't horrible.

Oh, and Lucky Number Slevin made me like Lucy Liu. Though she was fairly badass in Kill Bill, so nevermind.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 24, 2010 4:47 PM

Christopher Walken in everything. I don't like him. He makes me distinctly uncomfortable, his face seems unfinished, and his voice is irritating. But he's fucking brilliant, even in shitastic movies, so I watch him anyway.

Adam Sandler in Spanglish
Jim Carey in The Truman Show

Posted by: Reba at June 24, 2010 4:58 PM

FUCK TOM CRUISE! I already went over this on the NPH/Trade News page. Don't make me do it again.

Paltrow in Sliding Doors. Such a cute movie. And I don't get that feeling where I want to punch her in the neck, which happens in every other movie she is in.

Posted by: Shonda at June 24, 2010 4:58 PM

Matthew McConaughey in U-571. Usually I want to poke him with sharp things, but I love him in that movie.

Katie Holmes in "Pieces of April." Girl broke my damn heart in that movie.

Posted by: samantha t at June 24, 2010 5:26 PM

...and I'm sitting here trying to come up with a single role I even like Natalie Portman in and I've got a goose egg. The Professional was just too creepy for me to like her.

Posted by: samantha t at June 24, 2010 5:27 PM

Wow, there've been some good ones suggested already. I'll definitely vote for:

Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused
Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys
Jack Black in High Fidelity
Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man - and I'll add Seven

I think some people didn't read the parameters here. It's not "someone I often don't like in a role I could sort of stand," it's "actor I vehemently dislike in a role that I inexplicably love because they are perfect in it."

Posted by: MM at June 24, 2010 5:29 PM

Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction. I cannot stand him and all of his Ferrellosity, but I'll be goddamned if he didn't make me want to cry in this movie. STF is his "Truman Show".

Posted by: Craig at June 24, 2010 5:40 PM

I think Adam Sandler is a great dramatic actor and a terrible comedic actor. Punch Drunk Love, Funny People, Spanglish, he's great. When he's playing to his demographic of 15 year old boys I think he's a fucking moron.

Posted by: Jonzo at June 24, 2010 5:43 PM

Melanie Griffith in Cecil B. Demented
Her throat-clearing drives me up the wall, but she was perfect in that movie.

Begrudgingly, Michael Pitt in Last Days

Posted by: Taylor at June 24, 2010 6:03 PM

Posted by: Eibmoz at June 24, 2010 6:11 PM

2)Salma Hayek in Frida, because she was just perfectly cast, and didn't strut around in a bad accent and no clothes in that one. She actually got to ACT.

Considering she put her foot (and bank account) all up in it, she wasn't going to settle for being mere eye candy in that one (even though I distinctly remember her still getting naked...heh heh). And when has she ever had a bad accent?

Since Tom Cruise is now off limits, I can't really think of anyone. Got plenty of the inverse, but not many here. I suppose I just don't hate that many people. My heart has not blackened enough to the typical Pajiban level of misanthropy.

Oh wait! John Travolta in Face/Off. He was so deliciously hammy, I feared it wouldn't be kosher. And I still like Mick Cage so he doesn't count.

I suppose Edward Norton would fall into the same boat as Cruise?

I almost forgot to mention George Kennedy in "Cool Hand Luke". When I was growing up Kennedy exclusively starred in shitty Irwin Allen disaster epics, made for TV drivel and hawked Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes or some other such tacky crap. But it turns out the man gave an honest to God Oscar worthy performance in that movie -- and then coasted in Hollywood for the next 40 years.

Oh, and Michael Douglas in War of the Roses (I'm really dating myself here). Douglas comes off as a tool in pretty much everything he's in, which makes his role as a yuppie/proto-douchebag ex-husband not just good fit but a hoot to watch.

Posted by: Irving Washington at June 24, 2010 9:01 PM

I was going to say Andie McDowell in "Four Weddings and a Funeral," but after thinking about it, I kinda hate her character. She's a total waffler who basically torments Hugh Grant's character. So instead, I'll say Andie McDowell in "Groundhog Day."

Julia Roberts in ... um ... gimme a minute ... maybe a year ... aw, fuck it.

Posted by: , at June 24, 2010 9:40 PM

Julia Roberts was adorable in Mystic Pizza and fairly tolerable in Pretty Woman and Steel Magnolias. Her performances since those early roles, from comedy to drama, have been laced with so much smugness that I want to smack her silly.

Gerard Butler was fantastic in 300, but a miserable failure as a rom-com male lead and an action hero. More smug. Urgh.

Posted by: PDamian at June 24, 2010 10:03 PM

Chris Tucker in The Fifth Element

Good one. Now I have to go watch that for the second time today.

Posted by: jM at June 24, 2010 10:06 PM

Since somebody else mentioned Tom Hanks (WHAT), I feel safe in admitting that I can't stand Denzel Washington (for which I have been called a racist, btw), but I LOOOVED him in Training Day.

Posted by: Mimi at June 24, 2010 10:39 PM

Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest. I find him so annoying in everything he has ever done and even in his interviews, yet I love that movie and his quasi Shatner is great.

Also, Sean Penn in Milk. I hate Sean Penn cause I think he is a self-righteous ass who acts like himself in everything. I'm Sean Penn and my daughter just died, I'm Sean Penn and I am retarded, I'm Sean Penn and I am about to die... Bonus to those who can identify the movies above. But in Milk he wasn't Sean Penn being gay, he was Harvey Milk.

Posted by: Morgan LaFai at June 24, 2010 10:41 PM

i know she's not an actor really, but if the rules are that we hate them but liked them in a role then my vote goes for Courtney Love in both The People vs. Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon. granted, she was basically playing the same character in both films, but i walked out them with some seriously conflicting about her value to humanity bouncing around in my mind grapes.

also, and i know i'll get ostracised for saying this but, i don't Timothy Olyphant, but he was so good in High Life.

pray not, except for the starlets I am hot for.

Posted by: idleprimate at June 25, 2010 12:39 AM

Cuba Gooding, Jr. in Boyz in da 'Hood, a.k.a. the only good movie he's ever made. His suckin' and jivin' character in Jerry McGuire made me want to cringe, and the fact he won an Oscar for that buffoonery is just shameful.

Angelina Jolie in Gia. The first time she played an Obviously Insane Girl You're Weirdly Attracted To, but definitely not the last.

I am following the parameters. I hate that man with the burning torment of a white hot sun, but he blew me away in that film.

So there.

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at June 25, 2010 3:58 AM

I enjoyed this thread more than most lately and I'd like to doff my cap to the following:

Jennifer Lopez in "Out of Sight" is the big winner here, folks. Disagreeing is an indefensible position because you either admit that A) you like Jennifer Lopez *shudder*, or B) you didn't love "Out of Sight." Ridiculous!

TK and jM get to share a big icing-and-sprinkles-filled Pajibanus Award for nailing it.

Morgan LaFai also hit another one I should've thought of first with Tim Allen in "Galaxy Quest." Fantastic movie led by a momentarily likeable giant shithead.

And it always amazes me when someone crawls out of the woodwork to profess undying hatred toward infinitely likeable people. Tom Hanks? Really? Thinking Tom Hanks is smug is like thinking kittehs are pretentious. Doesn't compute, homey.

Gotta second Mattfactor on Brosnan in The Matador. While I don't hate him, he usually strikes me as being just sorta generic suave-guy eye candy in most of his movies, but his work in the The Matador was outstanding.

Terrific list; you people are absolutely nailing it. Eternal Sunshine was the only Jim Carrey movie where I didn't want to walk out of the theater. Let me add Nick Cannon in Drumline and Renee Zellweger in Chicago to the category of "annoyingly smug actors cast in a role where that works for them." Can't think of any film where I've liked Claire Danes, though.

Seeing the Bring It On trailer reminds me that what we need is fewer Kirsten Dunst movies and more Gabrielle Union movies!

Adrian Edmondson as 'Vim Fuego' (Alan Metcalfe) in Bad News/More Bad News. He's been in some stuff that I like, but I always like the projects in spite of his unceasing vulgar, screaming violent sociopath autopilot setting. It was kind of funny the first 70 times, but it got INCREDIBLY grating for the next 19 000. It works here though. Maybe it has a lot to do with that final scene in More Bad News with the possible demise of Vim Fuego-- That was capital-F Funny Shit.

I really hate Ruby Wax. Thought I'd throw that in.

Claire Danes - Check out Shop Girl.

Peirce Bronan is a nearly-great actor. Please watch Ghost Writer and Mister Johnson. Don't allow Bond to define him, there is so much more going on there.

I despise Will Smith and family. But before he let the asshole out, I really liked him in 6 Degrees. Not love, mine you, but he was pretty good. Otherwise, I walked out of I Am Legend and never looked back.

Ed Norton - way too over-satisfied with himself. "Isn't this performance good! Look at this! I could kiss myself!" Can't stand him! But he was perfect in his break out role in Primal Fear.

Melanie Griffith - Another Day in Paradise.

I absolutely cannot bear Nicholas Cage. But I adored his character in Raising Arizona. (On the other hand I saw that with two friends who hated it so much they walked out...)

Nic Cage in Kiss of Death. Oy, just throw David Caruso on that list for his work in that movie too. Not entirely fair becuase I love the cheese he does on CSI: Miami, but can't stomach him in any of his other "work".

Lohan in Mean Girls yeah, I agree with that.

Ben Stiller in Zero Effect
Will Farrell in Stanger Than Fiction

I can't stand either of them, but I really enjoyed their performances in those two roles.

Darryl Hannah, Vivica Fox, and Lucy Liu in Kill Bill. I don't like any of them normally, but I fucking LOVE Elle, Vernita, and O Ren.

Jennifer Tilly in "Bullets Over Broadway."

Jude Law-Closer--it works perfectly--though, he's been decent in other roles (Cold Mountain, I Heart Huckabees, Sherlock Holmes) but I feel like he gets some great roles that his abilities don't merit...

Posted by: Kristin at June 27, 2010 9:31 PM

You know what? Law's also pretty brilliant in his role in The Talented Mr. Ripley---maybe I just don't like him as a person...Or I'm letting Alfie blur my judgement...

Aniston (shudder) in Office Space
Cameron Pizzaface in B John Malkovich
Hayden Christiansen in Shattered Glass (must see to all you not-seen-it-yetters)
Andie McDowell gets two votes: Groundhog and Green Card
Tom Hanks (o please you know he's the most overrated ever ever ever) in Big
Nicole Kidman in nothing. Fuck Nicole Kidman.
Catherine Zeta Bitch in nothing. Fuck her too bcz she sucks the hot out of every guy she costars with
Ben Stiller in that Zero movie with Pullman
Will Smith in Men in Black
Julie Roberts must die

Forgot Ben Affleck in 200 Cigarettes. Courtney Love gets a vote for that one too. Wait!! I hate my own douche-ness for this but Ben Affleck in Chasing Amy. Aside from that Ben Affleck can go play a nice long game of hide and go fuck yourself.

Wow, now that someone mentioned it, I'm gonna have to say...

Kirsten Dunst as MJ in Spiderman. I think she's awful. She's also very threatening to his masculinity.

But Toby is still the ideal Peter Parker in my opinion.

Nic Cage in Adaptation.

Tom Cruise as The Vampire Lestat in Interview with the Vampire.
