I Get Two Paychecks This Way

I was driving through Griffith Park, on my way to don my monkey puppet for the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, when I went past the filming for Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill. In it, he plays both the brother and annoying sister of the title. As I went past, I saw Mr. Sandler decked out in his requisite fat suit and wig, spazzing around on a soccer field. I was the scariest thing I saw all night.

As an actor, I always wonder why certain folks feel the need to play several characters in the same film. I’m not talking about when actors have to play twin brothers or sisters or what have you, I mean that they play two separate characters entirely. It always seems odd to me. And it always seems like there are several actors who do this more frequently than most.

I think the record for the most characters played in a single film (besides when comedy troupes like Monty Python or Kids in the Hall make a film) has to go to either Alec Guinness for Kind Hearts and Coronets or Tony Randall in The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao. But as for actors playing multiple roles, it’s practically no contest. There were plenty like Nic Cage, Michael J. Fox and Ted Raimi that have done two films where they were more than one cast member. But here are the five who’ve dual (or in some cases multi-) roled:

5. Kevin Kline: Dave, Fierce Creatures, Wild Wild West

4. Mel Brooks: Spaceballs, History of the World: Part I, Blazing Saddles

3. Mike Myers: Austin Powers in “Goldmember,” Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, So I Married an Axe Murderer

2. Peter Sellers: The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu, The Prisoner of Zenda, Undercovers Hero, Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, The Mouse That Roared, I’m All Right Jack

1. Eddie Murphy: Meet Dave, Norbit, The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Bowfinger, The Nutty Professor, A Vampire in Brooklyn, Coming to America

Frank Morgan wasn't even mentioned? He was one of the first. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Morgan

What about Jack Warden in Used Cars?

Posted by: Adam C at January 26, 2011 2:20 PM

Meg Ryan in Joe Vs. The Volcano. Because I love that stupid movie.

"HellOOO Patricia."

Alec Guinness is amazing in Kind Hearts and Coronets. It's a good movie, worth a watch.

Posted by: pxilated at January 26, 2011 2:25 PM

Well, it's either done for the sake of virtuousity - to prove they can and that it doesn't take you out of the movie, or for the sake of the meta joke - winking at you and making you remember the actor instead of the incredibly moronic movie you're watching

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - Ben Affleck played himself and Holden McNeil and Jason Lee played Banky Edwards and Brodie.

Granted none of these roles were exactly night and day but yeah...

Kind Hearts and Coronets is my favorite movie of all time.

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 26, 2011 2:31 PM

What about the last good movie Nic Cage was in? I know it is hard to remember how and why he keeps getting cast in movies.

Posted by: MRod at January 26, 2011 2:33 PM

Joe Vs. The Volcano is NOT stupid! I love that movie, too!

Anyway, does Dead Again count? Because I love that more than Joe Vs. The Volcano.

MALKOVIIIIIIICH!

MRod, Leaving Las Vegas.

I think a distinction needs to be made for films in which the plot demands that two characters be played by the same actor in order to pull off a body-double switcheroo (e.g. Dave, Fierce Creatures, The Nutty Professor, Bowfinger, etc.) I am sure there are other examples.

Posted by: StoatCat at January 26, 2011 2:53 PM

Johnny Depp in Before Night Falls.

Posted by: TSF at January 26, 2011 2:58 PM

I have no response to that.

Cheech Marin in From Dusk 'Til Dawn.

All I can think of is Van Damme. I am a classy lady.

martin laurence

Posted by: donna at January 26, 2011 3:24 PM

Van Damme's ass is an entity on its own, so pretty much all of his films count.

Posted by: Jerry at January 26, 2011 3:32 PM

Danny Kaye!

Posted by: Dan at January 26, 2011 3:34 PM

Nicholson in Mars Attacks!

Posted by: idiosynchronic at January 26, 2011 3:41 PM

What about Bette Davis in A Stolen Life, the one where twin sisters are in love with the same man?

Fantastic acting by Bette, and not a bad movie, either.

Posted by: noodlestein at January 26, 2011 3:44 PM

Ooh, ooh, and Bette Davis in Dead Ringer, too! Chilling.

Posted by: noodlestein at January 26, 2011 3:48 PM

Joe vs. the Volcano isn't stupid, but Meg Ryan's "voices" for the weird sisters sure are.

Adaptation

Posted by: MRod at January 26, 2011 4:04 PM

Sam Rockwell's performances in Moon blow these out of the water.

Posted by: dagnabbit at January 26, 2011 4:23 PM

Just to be contrary...

...what's the point?

Hire another actor.

Them people need work. You can't be a waiter/waitress your entire life.

[Now there's an idea for a movie. Actor who never gets hired. Waiter forever. Call Ben Stiller.]

Posted by: OldSchool60 at January 26, 2011 4:23 PM

Pretty much the entire cast of Angels In America. Yeah, it was on tv, but it was still a movie. And who would have ever recognized Meryl Streep as the old rabbi at the beginning?

Posted by: Jeni at January 26, 2011 4:35 PM

Ah, good call on Angels in America. That was done out of a nod to the double-casting of the original play(s), but damn did they pull it off in that mini-series.

Posted by: Sara Tonin at January 26, 2011 4:59 PM

Dagnabbit, technically he's the exact same character in Moon.

Posted by: Paultera at January 26, 2011 5:02 PM

Someone (Jon Lovitz I think) was saying in an interview I read on AV Club that Eddie Murphy is a genius because he can play multiple characters in one film, and that the genius is overlooked because it's mostly for the silliness of the sight gags. He emphasized that it's really, really hard to pull that off or even try.
So, take that for what its worth?

Posted by: toddler dad at January 26, 2011 6:00 PM

Yes, he's the same character, but like Michael Keaton in Multiplicity, he's really playing the same character with a completely different personality and they are all quite different.

Speaking of Multiplicity, its not very believable is it? Imagine, 4 different guys thinking Andie MacDowell is desirable! I hate fantasy movies...

Posted by: EJ at January 26, 2011 6:03 PM

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Last Action Hero.

Posted by: Lucas at January 26, 2011 6:59 PM

Michael J. Fox?? Are you talking about Teen Wolf?

Posted by: bob loblaw at January 26, 2011 10:41 PM

John Glover in Love! Valour! Compassion!

He played a set of twins, one good and one kind of a prick. It was interesting. But he did a great job and it was believable.

Posted by: MyySharona at January 26, 2011 10:49 PM

Let's not forget Hayley Mills in "The Parent Trap."

Now THAT was art!

Posted by: tomc at January 26, 2011 11:50 PM

Little known fact: Alec Guinness played both Obi Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars. Mark Hamill's voice was dubbed in for the part of Obi Wan.

What about Jim Carrey in A Series of Unfortunate Events?
One actor. Many roles. No damn good reason.
