9 TV Father Figures I Would Hate To Disappoint

By Joanna Robinson | Seriously Random Lists | November 20, 2012 | Comments ()

It's that time again. Time to pack your bags and head back home for Turkey, cranberry sauce and the occasional disapproving glance. That's okay my little Black Sheep, you are all shiny, special snowflakes to me. To help you weather whatever withering look may come your way, steel yourself with these 9 TV Father Figures I would hate to disappoint. Their disapproval wounds me, but I'm sure you're made of sterner stuff.

Mr. Feeny--"Boy Meet World"

Commander Adama--"Battlestar Galactica"

Rupert Giles--"Buffy The Vampire Slayer"

DCI Gene Hunt aka 'The Guv': This is one that should really be seen in action.

Mike Ehrmantraut--"Breaking Bad"

Art Mullen--"Justified"

Ron Swanson--"Parks and Recreation"

Saul Berenson--"Homeland"

Coach Taylor-"Friday Night Lights"

2 Bonus Fathers

Zeek Braverman--"Parenthood"

Keith Mars--"Veronica Mars"

And, Because I Loves Ya, Extra Double Bonus Approval From Giles

giles giles giles giles giles forever.

  • e jerry powell

And now that William-Daniels-as-Cristina-Yang's-father-figure is dead...

We all know how easy it is to disappoint Braverman. Just go on food stamps.

  • My_Time_Machine

"For the first time, I choose to walk out on you."

That's why you never want to disappoint Feeny.
Was I the only one who felt two inches tall after watching that scene?

  • ClaireB

    I would add Gibbs. Yeah.

  • Wormer

Captain Jean-Luc Picard people... He's already disappointed you forgot him, how could you?

  • lowercase_ryan

    Great list :)

  • Donna SHerman

    Aw, you really do care.

  • All your father-figure lists are invalid without Dan Conner.

  • zeke_the_pig

My own father figure passed away 2 years ago. This list has brewed in me a cocktail of melancholy such that I've not seen in quite some time.
    ('tis a good list though.)

  • Pretty Hate Machine

I would hate to disappoint Red from That 70s Show.

  • KBalls

I am Coach Taylor as a father. My love will lift you up, motherfucker.

  • Katylalala

    Admiral Adama, always. Also Olmos.

  • John W

    Coach Ernie Pantusso - Cheers
Sgt Phil Esterhaus - Hill Street Blues

  • llp

Yes - Coach should be number one. The episode with his daughter, talking about how beautiful she is because she looks so much like her mother - it makes me tear up just thinking about it.

  • DeltaJuliet

I had forgotten about that scene...and got goosebumps all over when I remembered. Oh yes, I tear up over that one.....

  • Blake

Optimus Prime? Doctor Percival Ulysses Cox?

  • fribbley

Came here to say... Dr. Cox!

  • Alarmjaguar

    Dr. Cox!

  • the_wakeful

Great, now I want to rewatch Veronica Mars. Thanks for adding yet another show to the list I don't have time for.

  • Bodhi

I hate that it isn't on Netflix!

  • pnnylne

Ned Flanders. Think of all that shame from all that guilt.

  • Ash

  • Lotney

So happy to see Keith Mars in there! My favorite father-daughter relationship of all times.

  • Arran

I tell ya, the bit where *FIRST SEASON SPOILERS*

Veronica signs the contract which will waive any right she has to the Kane fortune without even asking if Keith is her real dad absolutely KILLS me. Fighting back tears every time.

  • koko temur

    i just started crying again

  • Natallica

I'd add Ned Stark. And now, that made me think of stupid, stupid Sansa. Stupid

  • googergieger

    Joe Biden.

Wait, what? He's a real person? Still, he is my answer for this list.

  • OH MY GOD How did you guys know I was in the middle of a Buffy marathon c/o Netflix???

  • RocksEaglesHats

    No Jed Bartlet?

  • koko temur

why swooning over Giles makes me feel like a perv?

  • Wormer

Giles would never make you feel like a perv. He'd make you a cup of tea and softly kiss you until you felt juuuuuuuust right.

  • Phaedre

Thank you for the extra double bonus approval from Giles. That made my evening.

  • Artsycella

I would recommend adding Jed Bartlett from The West Wing. Now that's a father figure I would never, ever want to disappoint!

  • Leigh

    And Leo McGarry, too.

  • Tinkerville

Good god, yes. When he told his "least favorite" daughter that all she had to do to make him happy was come home at the end of the day, it hit so close to home I cried like a baby.

  • koko temur

oh, can we get Isaac from sports night some love too?

  • koko temur

he was great in quoting bible angrily and/or in latin, bit it's the quiet moments that killed me. like when he waited with josh in airport when his dad died.

  • Bert_McGurt

As much as the show was (IS!) cheesy and kind of awful, I always wished I had a boss like Gil Grissom. And I think one could argue that Jamie from Mythbusters is a rather Swanson-esque father figure to his crew. I would SO covet that man's approval (and also moustache).

3rd bonus father (or foot-up-your-ass-er): Red Foreman.

  • Natallica

I was going to say just that: I'd love to have Grissom as a mentor. That quiet quirkyness is like a warm bowl of soup with a touch of pepper.

  • Rocabarra

I think I would add Al Swearengen to this list.

  • BWeaves

Gene Hunt as a father figure? Really? That's scary. Then again, yeah, I'd hate to disappoint him.

  • JoannaRobinson

For Shaz, Ray and Chris, sure.

  • sal paradise

I was so happy to see The Guv on this list! Life on Mars needs more love. Everywhere, all the time

  • petitesuissesse

My father IS Zeke Braverman. It's mostly awesome.

  • The mere notion of disappointing Coach Taylor made me well up a bit.

  • Lotney

One can't disappoint Coach Taylor because he will always understand you.

  • mona_sterling

Damn straight. He'd yell at you for being a dimwit, then put his hand on the back of your neck, look into your eyes, and inspire the shit out of you to do better next time.

  • Great, now I'm just full on crying. THANK YOU!

  • The scene during the "Don't Go" episode of Season 5 at Tim's hearing makes me cry every frakkin' time. "I'm sorry I let you down." "You didn't."

  • MrsAtaxxia

God and when he stood up for Tim and talked about knowing the content of his character and the look on Tim's face. Coach is the best.

  • petitesuissesse

Which would be worse? Him or Tammy? Or the double-team side eye? I'm getting sweaty palms thinking about it.

  • "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE SEX!" I swear, I considered celibacy after I watched that episode.

  • PerpetualIntern

NOTHING stressed me out more than when she and Julie fought. So real and so raw and so like my mother and me.
