5 TV Characters That Prove You Don't Have to Be "Manly" to Be an Awesome Man

Joanna’s 8 Great Actors That Personify Manliness list was not only spot-on, but it triggered a supplementary thought, one that I have a particular self-interest in: Lacking “Manliness” doesn’t necessary preclude you from being an awesome “man.” I am married; I have a child; and I am heterosexual, but besides watching 12 hours of football a week and perhaps lingering a little too long on the beer commercials, I don’t fit under the stereotypical definition of manliness: I don’t hunt; I don’t fish; I don’t consume large portions of red meat; I don’t scowl; I don’t kick any asses; and I’m somewhat emotionally available. Nor would I consider myself a “metrosexual”: I don’t dress with a particular flair; I don’t shop; and I don’t use product, except for moisturizer, because that’s just good sense. And while there’s certainly a debate as to whether a man who spends a lot of time absorbing media, dotes on his wife, prefers the treadmill to the weights, and bathes regularly can be considered “attractive” or “sexy,” there’s little question in my mind that these five television characters are awesome men, even if Ron Swanson could squash them all with his mustache.

Troy Barnes, “Community”
Unmanly Traits: Although Troy Barnes was both a high-school quarterback and the prom king, there’s nothing particularly jock-y about him. He takes modern dance and acting classes, his phone is the decidedly unmanly Motorola Droid X, he’s a nerd, he eats candy cigarettes, and he chooses not to drink alcohol. And while there’s nothing masculine about a love of LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow, but everything endearing about it.

Marshall Eriksen, “How I Met Your Mother”
Unmanly Traits: Marshall is a goofball who is in a solid, intimate relationship with a wife, Lily, with whom he’s not afraid to cede control of the relationship. He’s extremely emotional and not afraid to cry in front of people; he can play the piano well; he has dancer’s hip; he once admitted to have never been in a fight; he’s an environmental lawyer; and he cannot grow a mustache. Moreover, when he’s depressed, he binge-eats ice cream. He’s also very cuddly and comfortable with his sexuality.

Brad Williams, “Happy Endings”
Unmanly Traits: A typical favorite night for Brad Williams is not downing six shots of whiskey and kicking ass. Brad would prefer to stay at home, watch TV, eat Chinese food and have sex with his smoking hot wife, who controls all the power in the relationship. He likes to wear dresses as shirts (he likes the deep tuck), would consider wearing tight-fitting baby shirts; he likes “girly” drinks; loves “The Gilmore Girls,” and enjoys crudité. He also dresses nicely, likes to express himself through touching, and loves to twirl.

Chris Brinkley, “Up All Night”
Unmanly Traits: Chris Brinkley was a lawyer who gave up his career to stay at home and take care of his baby. He wears aprons and cartoon boxers; he bakes; he loves to play Peek-a-boo with his infant daughter, and he “likes” everything on Facebook because he likes the way pressing “like” makes him feel.

Phil Dunphy, “Modern Family”
Unmanly Traits: Phil Dunphy dotes on his wife; he’s very juvenile; he was a cheerleader in college; he feels threatened by his father-in-law’s masculinity; he learned the dances from “High School Musical” to impress his children; he suffers from coulrophobia; he loves cheesy movies, and he’s completely useless with the stereotypically male chores around the house.

I can't tell if it's sad or manly that I know EXACTLY what move and what part of High School Musical that dance move that Phil is doing.

I love that these are my five favorite men on TV. It's the comedy. You may be able to shoot deer for my dinner, but that means nothing if you can't make me laugh.

Posted by: PerpetualIntern at October 18, 2011 4:06 PM

I love this. These are also my favorite men in comedy, and the types of men I love in life!
Aside from his stereotypical video-gaming habit Mr. Nimue is "unmanly." He cooks for me, is studying to be a nurse while I work outside the house and support him, he hates to watch sports with me, (except football sometimes)likes to cut coupons and shop, is pretty emotionally available, wants to stay at home when we have kids, and is the coolest guy I know.

Posted by: Nimue at October 18, 2011 4:10 PM

"he suffers from coulrophobia"

THERE'S NOTHING UNMANLY ABOUT THAT, YOU JERK.

Posted by: Ghisent at October 18, 2011 4:11 PM

Nothing wrong with this list.

But as an aside: I f'ing HATE The Dunphy family. I hate the husband, I hate the wife, I hate the kids (except for the little boy- the kid actor who portrays him may be a genius.)

It's been a while since I experienced TV characters who filled me with such searing rage. And I actually really like Modern Family. So much so that I willingly suggest myself to this eye-gougingly awful family on a weekly basis.

When you get right down to it, everyone should be afraid of clowns. It's a basic instinct for self-preservation, honed by millions of years of evolution.

from where exactly is that pic of marshall and barney from? i've seen every episode of HIMYM and that is not in there, right? i'd remember on account of insane sexiness

Posted by: marie at October 18, 2011 4:18 PM

I can't do bold or italics, someone taught several times, but I always forget. Anyway, Martin- the kid who portrays the Dunphy boy is actually a genius. In Mensa. Seriously.

Posted by: Nimue at October 18, 2011 4:20 PM

Lacking “Manliness” doesn’t necessary preclude you from being an awesome “man.”

Sure, that and a pair of testicles (or one real one and a neuticle).

Posted by: Jast at October 18, 2011 4:22 PM

The pic from HIMYM is from a blooper reel, I believe. There's a whole lotta kissing going on in the blooper reels.

Posted by: PerpetualIntern at October 18, 2011 4:25 PM

I feel like JD and Turk should be on this list.
Though Turk is pretty much the awesome one.

Posted by: Haystacks at October 18, 2011 4:26 PM

I second the Turk and JD comment. Also, I was thinking about Joel on Parenthood, because I guess you could say being a stay-at-home dad might cause him to come off as unmanly (like Chris from Up All Night), but everything else about him is super manly.

Posted by: Me at October 18, 2011 4:30 PM

They did an entire episode about Marshall having been in tons of fights with his brothers and then KOing the bartender we never noticed until that episode. So Marshall lied. To a gay guy. Because he didn't want to fight him. Obviously the physical contact would have been arousing for him. There's a reason he's only been with one women. Come out already and join Zachary already.

Posted by: Wembley at October 18, 2011 4:41 PM

@marie-it's the blooper reel from season three I think. I may or may not own all of the dvds :)

And here Marshall, Troy, and Brad are some of my biggest character crushes. I knew I liked 'em schmoopy.

Posted by: Julie at October 18, 2011 4:44 PM

and he cannot grow a mustache

He doesn't know that baby, GOD!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 18, 2011 4:49 PM

J.D. and Turk should be at the top of this list.

And Logan Echolls!

Posted by: Mel C. at October 18, 2011 5:07 PM

I find it kind of sad that liking your wife is "unmanly," but concede that network tv usually defaults to the henpecked schlub / horrible bitch stereotype.

"He loves his wife? That's so gay!"

Posted by: Edith at October 18, 2011 5:09 PM

For your consideration: Andrew Maxwell "Andy" Dwyer

Posted by: GayForLudgate at October 18, 2011 5:10 PM

Yeah, Edith, I agree. My intended dotes on me and even (gasp) lets me call plenty of shots, but he exudes macho-ness like the sun exudes UV rays.

Posted by: Angeleno Ewok at October 18, 2011 5:26 PM

My favorite Phil Dunphy line: "WTF, why the face?"

Posted by: John W at October 18, 2011 5:50 PM

@Mel C. How is Logan Echolls unmanly???

Also, how is Ben Wyatt not on this list? He wept in his Batman suit for crying out loud, and I loved him for it.

Posted by: lyssie at October 18, 2011 5:54 PM

Yes to Turk and Ben Wyatt. And you should have added Mitchell and Cam to Phil's spot. Or, you know, replaced Phil.

"What -- oh now a brother can't twirl?"

Posted by: Three-nineteen at October 18, 2011 6:19 PM

Logan has a lot of ummanly mannerisms (hand motions, inspirational quote of the day, etc). But he's a badass. Don't get me wrong.

Posted by: Mel C. at October 18, 2011 6:59 PM

Turk was my first thought, too, but I didn't want to wear out the Christopher Turk welcome today, after I'd already posted this over on Uproxx:

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at October 18, 2011 7:29 PM

Ben Wyatt forever, yes.

Posted by: kelsy at October 18, 2011 7:39 PM

@Mel C. I guess that is true. Now it's time to go watch Veronica Mars... again. I am going seriously going to wear those DVDs out.

Posted by: lyssie at October 18, 2011 8:31 PM

I second Ben "Batman" Wyatt.

Posted by: anon at October 18, 2011 10:49 PM

glaring omission Benji Wyatt but besides tht love dis listttt...includes the majority of my favorite characters currently on TV

Posted by: anna at October 18, 2011 11:25 PM

I was never a major HIMYM fan anyway, but I hate Marshall. And, I have to be honest, the actor playing him? Sort of pisses me off for the EXACT same reasons. He has this manchild thing going on, like every character he plays IS emotional and in touch with his inner child but it annoys me. Even his involvement in the Muppets movie, hasn't he written it to? That annoys me. I don't know why, but that bugs the shit out of me. I want to see the new Muppets movie BARRING his presence.

(I know he shoes mature moments, often, but it doesn't work for me at all)

I don't know what it is, lots of guys do that manchild thing and it's fine, but THAT GUY pisses me off. A lot. A lot a lot. I think because with him it seems relatively all encompasing. Every character I've seen him play thus far is...the same. Emotionally immature and just..like in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, we're sort of supposed to hate her a little for not getting his 'adorable' manchildness, and as funny as puppet Dracula was, if I was Sarah Marshall I'd have dumped that fucking loser too. I mean isn't the thing that she thinks he's depressed about something? Because he isnt. He's a lazy child who found himself a job where he only appears to have to work for about an hour a day. I hate him.

So no, he's not manly and not awesome. Yes in HIMYM he and Lily have this great, equal thing going on, but if I washer I'd have smacked him by now too, for all the times he's been adorable he's been a total fucking moron too. HATE MARSHALL.

Posted by: Nadine at October 19, 2011 4:36 AM

Nadine... you repeaed that point about three times in one post.

And Segel IS the new muppet movie. It's entirely his doing. He fought for it, he wrote it, he's in it.

Side note: that header pic. Wow.

Posted by: blip at October 19, 2011 7:48 AM

You can NEVER wear out the Christopher Turk welcome. I'm pretty sure it says so somewhere in the Constitution.

Posted by: Markus at October 19, 2011 9:05 AM

Marshel Eriksen rocks hehehe rocks the brains of Segel, love this show and watching it always at http://www.telepisodes.net/

Posted by: TV Episodes at October 19, 2011 9:06 AM

Marshall's the most manly person on the show (besides Robin). He's from the midwest, he plays hockey, he does all the manly things Minnesotans do, and not only has he been in a fight, we've actually seen him in a fight when he knocked out the crazy bartender with one shot (and spent the whole episode talking about fights with his brothers).

Posted by: J-Bone at October 19, 2011 10:00 AM

I know, I like to make sure everyone gets it! Also I made a bunch of spelling mistakes. I'd just gotten up, I'm not...that coherent before the coffee kicks in so I ramble...moreso than usual.

And I know about the muppets thing but I'm like...the fact he's SO involved with it and has basically done the whole thing himself? I don't find that endearing. I dont know what I find it, but it isn't good...

I have no problem with the manchild thing, I have no problem with characters who are not 'obviously' manly but are still awesome and this list makes total sense, Segel(thanks!) just...with him, it puts me off. I actually liked Sarah Marshall first time around but second time I was like...he's kind of a loser. Like an ACTUAL loser. Just doesn't work for me.

Posted by: Nadine at October 19, 2011 10:28 AM

Nadine, have you ever seen Freaks & Geeks? I think that was his funniest role, and maybe you'd find the manchild thing less annoying when he was playing an actual teenager.

Posted by: Jesse M. at October 19, 2011 10:42 AM

Jessie, I probably would appreciate it more if I saw it in someone where it fit. My BF has seen Freaks and Geeks and he loves Segel so it may just be that!

Posted by: Nadine at October 19, 2011 12:15 PM

Nadine, Jason Segal played a manchild/sleezoid in Knocked Up, if that helps. I didn't really recognize him because of the goatee, but he comes off as skeezy and not helpless. It's different, right?

Posted by: scorzi at October 19, 2011 12:55 PM

Great list! Those guys are some of my favorite TV characters, especially Troy. I'm really enjoying all their shows too (except I gave up on HIMYM, love most the cast but grew bored with the show).

I agree with adding Ben Wyatt, and how about Shawn and Gus from Psych?

Posted by: lucy2 at October 20, 2011 9:36 AM

scorzi, I remember him in Knocked Up! I'd not noticed due to the beard too! Actually, yes, I didn't hate him in that, in a small role played against type. He was actually pretty funny. THAT SHIT? That's when I think he's great. The rest, just..gah.
