But It Could Change with This Relationship: 20 Actors Who Need More Television Screentime

By Cindy Davis | Seriously Random Lists | March 18, 2014 | Comments ()

When I first spied Eric Roberts on this past week’s episode of Justified, I about peed my pants and did a dance around the room; he’s one of those great actors I wish we’d see on television more often. (Note to Graham Yost; Alex Miller spin-off…) My brain being the way it is, I immediately started thinking about actors we never seem to get enough of. Some of them haven’t been on the small screen in ages; others are just plain under/misused, or haven’t landed a role that allows them to shine. I mean, why in the world would anyone bring on Denis O’Hare and take away his tongue? The horror!

1. Eric Roberts (Justified, Tainted Love, Bullet in the Face)

2. Eric Stoltz (Wilfred, Caprica, Grey’s Anatomy)

3. Dichen Lachman (King & Maxwell, Last Resort, Being Human, Dollhouse)

4. John Hawkes (Eastbound & Down, Lost)

5. Holly Hunter (Top of the Lake, Saving Grace)

6. Edward James Olmos (Eureka, Dexter, Battlestar Galactica)

7. Rose Byrne (Portlandia, Damages)

8. Jeremy Davies (Justified, Lost, coming up: Hannibal)

9. Sam Elliott (Parks and Recreation, Robot Chicken)

10. & 11. Erica Tazel and Jacob Pitts (Justified, Jericho, Law & Order; Justified, The Pacific)

12. Robert Forster (Last Man Standing, Breaking Bad)

13. Morena Baccarin (Homeland, V)

14. Jason Ritter (Parenthood, Gravity Falls, The Event)

15. Rebecca De Mornay (John from Cincinnati, The Practice)

16. Keith Carradine (Missing, Damages, Dollhouse, Dexter)

17. Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Riches)

18. Gareth David-Lloyd (Holby City, Torchwood)

19. Rachel Griffiths (Camp, Brothers & Sisters)

20. Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story, The Good Wife, True Blood)

Cindy Davis, (Twitter) is dreaming up a screwball comedy starring this entire list.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Zoo

Morena Baccarin Ack! FIREFLY! It should be on the list!

  • Uriah_Creep

Hold everything: Dickie Bennett Jeremy Davies is going to be on Hannibal? BINGO!

  • Yes, sir, he is. And can you tell that's my favorite pic?

  • Uriah_Creep

Well that's weird. I remember reading that post of yours last month, and yet I totally forgot about old Jeremy. i think I blanked out after reading that Katharine Isabelle would be on it.

  • Ryan Ambrose

There's a serious lack of Lee Pace in that list.

  • Tommy Marx

I thought it was against the law to mention any "Firefly" actor without mentioning that they appeared in "Firefly".

  • Tommy Marx

But then you showcase Rachel Griffiths and ignore five years of "Six Feet Under", so I guess it's not illegal anymore.

  • Anyone aware of Rachel Griffiths knows she was in SFU.

  • damnitjanet

Rachel Griffiths will FOREVER be Brenda Chenowith

  • maja

    and rhonda (muriel's wedding).

  • Bert_McGurt

    - John Hawkes (Eastbound & Down, Lost)
    - Keith Carradine (Missing, Damages, Dollhouse, Dexter)

Cindy, my dear - there's this little Western from a few years ago you need to see...

  • Marc Greene

You are so on about us needing more Denis O Hare in our lives. Unrelated: Christ on a Cracker, how large are Kaitlin Olsen's hands?!! That beer looks like a tiny baby sippy cup in her mitts.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    1. You lost me somewhat at "Eric Roberts...great actor"
    2. Good list
    3. I'd like to see the back of Baccarin's haircut, because mine is the same kind of short from the front, but my hair is finer.
    4. Jason Ritter. All of your hair is wrong.
    5. I miss The Riches. Eddie Izzard should be on this list.

  • TacoBellRey

Whenever I see Jason Ritter I think of John Ritter and then I get sad.

  • Blake

Liza Lapira (Super Fun Night / D.T.T.B.I.A.23 / Dexter???)

*Yeah Super Fun Night was just cancelled but no one watched it and she deserved so much better.

Ellen Wong (The Carrie Diaries / Combat Hospital)

*Sure T.C.D. hasn't been shit canned yet but she also deserves so much better and preferably a role where she isn't playing a teenager.

And both are OH SO HOT! And we need more Asian Americans / Canadians on TV.

  • John W

Send this entire list to the folks in charge of casting True Detective. (that show really hooked me).

  • maja

gigantic yay for stoltz and roberts. and also, harry hamlin should be included. he's been great in "mad men" and "shameless".

  • maja

    oh, and callum keith rennie.

  • loo shag brolley

Mary McDonnell. And super yes to Dichen Lachman, but only if her OTHER talents get displayed as well. (I am meaning her acting abilities, which are dope.)

  • Naye

I give pretty much anything Jason Ritter does a chance; I don't know why i love him so much.

  • Three_nineteen

They've all been through some shit.

  • Nisi

    I think this thing's begun.

  • loo shag brolley

What do I have to do?

  • Nisi

    I'm dropping hints... ;o)

  • loo shag brolley

Really every line in this song need to be a title in the Pajiba lexicon.

  • Mrs. Julien

Why does Sam Elliott look like he wants to harm me? I love Sam Elliott. I've loved him since I was 10 years old. Is my admiration too cloying, too single-minded?

  • ZbornakSyndrome

It's hard to get the full Elliott effect without the voice. I mean, the face is certainly a selling point, but that voice could never do anyone harm.

  • Mrs. Julien

The voice is lulling me into a false sense of security even as the scowl is preparing to throttle me.

  • loo shag brolley

There, there. Think of happier times.

  • loo shag brolley

    Dammit, photo, displaaaaaaay!

  • Mrs. Julien

    The head tilt SLAYS me.

  • lowercase_ryan

There, I knew I could do it.

  • lowercase_ryan

    Also: John Hawkes in everything.

  • Belladonna Took

I still think of John Hawkes as that guy from that episode of the X-Files and want to scream at him to leave Scully alone!

  • lowercase_ryan

    such a great response.

  • damnitjanet

    John Hawkes: DEADWOOD

  • Bananapanda

...and Keith Carradine (Bill Hickok). Those not on Sons of Anarchy or Justified need jobs asap.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Can we make a law about that? Is there a petition?

  • Mrs. Julien

I'm glad she put it in writing 'cause I said put him in more things once already, with my mouth.

  • BlackRabbit

I misread that as "put him in my mouth." Please forgive the non-coffee induced suggestion of indecency on my part.

  • Mrs. Julien

It was a reference to something chilling that Hawkes said in Winter's Bone.

Teardrop: I said shut up once already, with my mouth.

  • kushiro -

Everyone in the Childrens Hospital/NTSF/Burning Love/Comedy Bang Bang axis.

  • Naye

Its crazy because I hate each of those shows except Burning Love but I love every single cast member of Children's Hospital for any work they do outside of it.

  • kushiro -

I love those shows. I really enjoy the mix of absurdity with parody/homage to other shows and movies. And I just can't resist a well-crafted oblivious and/or stupidly narcissistic character.

  • Naye

Idk Im one of those people who finds most things in life laughably absurd, so when I see true without meaning absurdity I roll my eyes. I also don't like slapstick if that tells you the kind of person I am lol.

  • kushiro -

That's cool. I like physical comedy if done right but only if it occurs as part of smart and funny writing (e.g. Moss in the witness box on the IT Crowd YES, Kevin James & Adam Sandler farting in a pool NO).

  • lowercase_ryan

Cheers lady, this may be your best list yet. I'm struggling to add to it. I mean I will, but I'll have to come back to do it.

  • Mrs. Julien

Amy Ryan from The Wire and The Office.

  • Minnow

    "Morena Baccarin (Homeland, V)"

Run Cindy, the browncoats are coming for you.

  • Jiffylush

The best thing about Homeland being filmed in Charlotte was the opportunity it gave me to run into Morena Baccarin at the pool, the grocery store too but that really doesn't compare.

    My life is complete.

  • cruzzercruz

    We aim to misbehave.

  • kimberleybear

    Darn straight.

  • kinoumenthe

    13. Morena Baccarin (Homeland, V, FIREFLY)
There, I corrected that for you.

  • grr arrgh

My first thought was "Dammit, cross out V and put Firefly! Firefly was a MUCH better sci fi show than V"

  • It is known.

  • amberdragonfly

There is nowhere in the verse you can hide now....

  • VonnegutSlut

    You beat me to it...damn.

  • stella

Mark Pellegrino and Amy Acker and Jeffrey Dean Morgan? And also Enver Gjokaj and Olivia Williams and Zack Gilford and Naveen Andrews?

  • Yeah...Mark Pellegrino.. Lucifer!!!! Idol. And Jacob. Lol this blog is ridiculous.

  • Uriah_Creep

Mark Pellegrino is currently starring on a (bad) CW show called The Tomorrow People, which my sister-in-law made me watch. It's your typical CW teen shit, and I cannot in good conscience watch it.

  • stella

Ugh that show is terrible. Like even a person who likes teen shows, that show is just awful.

  • mzblackwidow

Amy Acker is on Person of Interest. Jeffrey Dean Morgan in a role where he does not die is my #1. Also Enver & Dichen, Olivia Williams,

    Mark Pellegrino.

Next year is the last for SOA and JUstified so there will be MANY more on my list !

  • Travis_J_Smith

I was about to say: "How do you mention Dichen and not Enver Gjokaj!?"

  • Sirilicious

Enverrrrrrr! He should have been getting big movie roles offered by now. Why doesn't hollywood adhere to my schedule?!

  • stella

I really dont understand why he and Amy Acker havnt hit it big.

  • Sirilicious

Agreed. I am pretty realistic when it comes to my faves, I can usually objectively say if they are as pretty in real life to the general public as they seem in my fevered dreams, or as talented as i hope them to be. Enver might not be hollywoodpretty, but he is very, very talented. I am rooting for him.

    Amy is hollywoodpretty AND talented.

  • Judge_Snyder

    Enver Gjokaj should be HUGE.

Hopefully one of the Whedon's will find something substantial for him to do.

  • stella

I think he should be on Orphan Black as some kind of male clone counterpart. (I just finished rewatching Orphan Black so Im kind of on a kick, apparently)

  • grr arrgh

I didn't know I wanted that til you said that. He'd be excellent AND he comes with his own body double twin brother.

  • mzblackwidow

he plays ANY character frighteningly well. Remember when he played Topher ??

  • grr arrgh

I LOVED when he played Topher. That was amazing, partly because it was scarily dead on. He'd be fantastic on Orphan Black. He might even be the male counterpart to Tatiana Maslany. Wouldn't it be cool if she had a brother and they cloned the shit out of him too?

  • stella

How could I forget? One of my favorite tv moments ever.

  • mzblackwidow

    me too.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Dear lord save Zack Gilford from shitty horror and action movies.

  • stella

Yeah, I kind of want to have an intervention for him.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Let's call coach and set one up, he has so much potential.

  • loo shag brolley

    [googles Mark Pellegrino]

    Yes. That guy. In things.

  • BlackRabbit

He looks like a young Peter Weller and sounds like a wine label. I'd watch him. Also, more Fred Ward. Perhaps teamed up with Robert Foster.

  • Modernlove

    Mark Pellegrino for everything.

  • I just want him to have a better show than the awful Tomorrow People. I love you, Mark, but I just couldn't watch that show.

  • stella

Can you imagine him on like Orphan Black or The Walking Dead?

  • stella

I really want him to show up on the walking dead as a villian.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Well, Amy Acker is quite frequently marvelous in Person of Interest.

  • stella

Damnit. Amy Acker AND Michael Emerson on one show? I guess I know what Im going to watch next.

  • mzblackwidow

    you really really should :)

  • Fabius_Maximus

You have to be patient. She appears late in season 2, along with Sarah Shahi, who is - to keep to the format - terrifyingly marvelous.

  • kinoumenthe

Root appears in season one, if memory serves. Yes, ep.13
"Root Cause" and of course the last ep. of season 1. After, she becomes a semi-to full regular.

  • Emilie

sarah shahi is back on tv? how did i miss that?

  • Fabius_Maximus

    You don't watch CBS?

  • Bananapanda

Nobody under 60 watches CBS. Except How I Met Your Mother.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Well, yeah. That was implied, but the tone I had in my head didn't exactly transfer over into written form.

  • Emilie

i gave up tv in august when i lost my job. now i have a new one, but i'm kind of a nomad as i move to a new city. timezone changes mean i have no idea when anything is on anywhere ever, basically.

  • kinoumenthe

    And very unhingedly so.
Unhingedly marvellous. I'm pretty sure that even if I can write that, I can't pronounce it in English.
