The 12 Crappiest Movies of Drew Barrymore’s Career

By Agent Bedhead | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (65)

barrymoresrl1.jpg

I understand that some of the movies that made this list will generate at least some degree of strange, nostalgia-bred outrage. So let’s dispense with formalities and do this:

Batman Forever: Don’t try and tell me that this movie wasn’t as bad as Batman & Robin minus the bat nipples.

batforeversrl1.jpg

Poison Ivy: Sure, this was the movie that brought Drew back into Hollywood’s consciousness after her teenaged exile years. That doesn’t change the fact that it was a predictable, soft-core mess.

poisonivysrl1.jpg

Charlie’s Angels - Full Throttle: This was just more of the same in regard to the first movie; in this case, that’s not a good thing.

charliesaftsrl1.jpg

Freddy Got Fingered: Quite frankly, Freddy can stick it up his a**.

freddiesrl1.jpg

Going the Distance: The general premise of being in a long-distance relationship is even more tedious on the big screen. Who knew?

goingdistancesrl1.jpg

Home Fries: This is a pretty twisted movie that didn’t run well with test audiences, so it got prepackaged as a “quirky” romcom. Big mistake.

homefriessrl1.jpg

Never Been Kissed: Silly, pointless, and full of plot holes. Sure, it was cute. Cute and crappy.

neverbeensrl1.jpg

He’s Just Not That Into You: Here’s the token “Do I really have to explain this one?” entry.

hesjustnotsrl1.jpg

Mad Love: The promotional material for this movie presented a loving, whirlwind romance on the road, but then the movie itself took a misguided turn into bipolar madness. How completely disrespectful.

madlovesrl1.jpg

Music and Lyrics: If I’m not mistaken, this movie was intended to be an unofficial sequel to The Wedding Singer. It failed miserably.

musiclyricssrl1.jpg

Lucky You: A romantic comedy about poker. Or a poker movie about romantic comedy? Either way, it wasn’t very romantic and pissed off a bunch of poker fans as well.

luckyyousrl1.jpg

And a little unexpected bonus number for you…

Firestarter: Yes, I too have seen this movie several times over the course of my childhood. That doesn’t excuse the fact that this “horror” movie isn’t scary at all and is, consequently, pretty damn crappy too.

Can we put Ever After in here, AND YES I'M SERIOUS?!

Posted by: ChristianH at February 1, 2012 2:03 PM

Batman Forever is actually much worse than Batman and Robin. Batman and Robin is stupidly hilarious.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at February 1, 2012 2:06 PM

Music and Lyrics is like a template for how to write a bland, studio standard issue romcom. It was a fill in the blanks exercise.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at February 1, 2012 2:09 PM

Ha! In the shot for Firestarter, Barrymore looks exactly like my 8-year-old nephew. He even makes the same face when he's serious.

Posted by: spljt at February 1, 2012 2:17 PM

Nope, as a former Josie Grossie/child of the 90s I am mentally removing Never Been Kissed from this list. Two words: Michael Vartan. Two more: Molly Shannon. I have no shame in saying that this film is rufus. Feel free to mock.

Posted by: sam at February 1, 2012 2:18 PM

Poison Ivy: Sure, this was the movie that brought Drew back into Hollywood’s consciousness after her teenaged exile years. That doesn’t change the fact that it was a predictable, soft-core mess.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Posted by: Erich at February 1, 2012 2:19 PM

The original draft of Home Fries was written by Vince Gilligan?!?

Posted by: GroverJefferson at February 1, 2012 2:21 PM

Her rom-com crapfest aside, the way she talks with her lisp annoys the shit out of me and she ALWAYS place the same character in ALL her movies (even the halfway decent ones). I only liked her in The Wedding Singer, and just barely. But hey, I even liked Adam Sandler in that movie, so it worked on the level that it made these two horrible actors actually likable. Go figure.

Posted by: Gigi at February 1, 2012 2:25 PM

I have no shame in saying that this film is rufus. Feel free to mock.

I won't mock until I get a translation of "rufus" as an adjective.

Posted by: Wednesday at February 1, 2012 2:27 PM

Really? Not the low budget acid trip that is Babes in Toyland?

Posted by: buttercup at February 1, 2012 2:27 PM

I would like to second ChristianH's suggestion. We can sub "Ever After" for "Music & Lyrics" which has an excellent pop soundtrack and makes great use of Hugh Grant's charms, thankyouverymuch.

And I rather liked "Going the Distance" but that was due to Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Jim Gaffigan more than Drew.

But I agree with "Never Been Kissed." Holy hell, is that a terrible movie.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at February 1, 2012 2:29 PM

Only 12? Like Gigi says, she's the same character in every movie. I haven't seen all of these, on purpose, so maybe I'm the wrong person to comment.

Posted by: memikeyounot at February 1, 2012 2:31 PM

GroverJefferson - don't worry, he was also a producer on the X-Files. Redeemed!

And you're absolutely right - Batman Forever is actually worse than Batman and Robin.

Posted by: Bert at February 1, 2012 2:32 PM

What about Doppelganger? Did everyone simply erase that suspenseful crapfest from their collective memories or am I the only one who's seen it (on late night TV)?

Posted by: thenchonto at February 1, 2012 2:40 PM

I actually liked Home Fries. It was so not what it was marketed as. Twisted is right. In a good way.

Posted by: heatseeker at February 1, 2012 2:43 PM

I don't know that I've ever heard of Mad Love, but seems like Barrymore is rocking a Melanie Griffith look.

Posted by: Sara Tonin at February 1, 2012 2:45 PM

Narrowing down a list of crappy Drew Barrymore movies to 12 must have been difficult, as her IMDB lists 63 credits, and probably only 4-and-a-half of those were decent movies (and she was bad in all of them).

....I apparently have a lot more distaste for this vile person than I realized.

Posted by: ChristianH at February 1, 2012 2:45 PM

Yeah, Doppelganger's gotta go on there.

I actually was mildly charmed by Music & Lyrics, so how about throwing 50 First Dates on there instead? I haven't seen 50 First Dates, but I'll take mildly spastic but occasionally charming Hugh Grant over Adam Sandler any day.

Also, didn't none other than Pajiba itself say Going The Distance wasn't half-bad?

Posted by: MM at February 1, 2012 2:46 PM

Poison Ivy, Never Been Kissed, and Home Fries....I liked.

No 50 First Dates?

Posted by: sarah at February 1, 2012 2:48 PM

Having seen both, I prefer 50 First Dates to Music and Lyrics. They're both in that so banal and just charming enough that I can't really hate them camp though.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at February 1, 2012 2:51 PM

Wasn't Poison Ivy just Drew Barrymore playing Amy Fisher again?

Posted by: Jerry at February 1, 2012 2:55 PM

or vice versa (since Poison Ivy was a 1992 release and two of the three Amy Fishers were 1993).

Posted by: Jerry at February 1, 2012 2:57 PM

There was just no room for 50 First Dates and Ever After huh? Both of those sucked. Almost every movie she has done has been bad. Wow.

Posted by: Gigi at February 1, 2012 3:00 PM

Ok...wait a minute. Batman Forever worse than Batman & Robin?!!? Allow me to make a case against that conclusion.

B&R remains the only movie I've actually gotten my money back for. (Ok, it was because the sound kept shorting out through the entire film, but still.)

In BF, Drew was basically scenery. It almost should be excluded from the list on that fact alone.

At least BF characters were amusing to watch. Tommy Lee and Jim were taking cues from Jack's performance from the first film. This was back when these were still "comic book" movies, and Hollywood thought that "comic book" equaled "funny pages", so the performances were required to be over the top.

But in B&R you had that dull to enraging cast of:

  • Uma "Golly my lips are pouty" Thurman as Poison Ivy - yawn. And what the hell is that growing out of your eyerows?
  • Ahnold "Would You Like to Touch My Bicep" Schwarzzennneggggger as Mr. Freeze (which described his character and the effect of his performance on the audience)
  • Chris O'Donnell. Ok, he was just as annoying in both films, I'll give you that.
  • Alicia Fucking Silverstone. Really? Can't begin to express my hatred.
  • And Clooney. Fucking Clooney. George, Bruce Wayne can't be a tortured soul if he's always smirking.

Val Kilmer may be wooden, but he was gloomy, brooding wooden. No smirking.

I rest my case.

Posted by: NateS1973 at February 1, 2012 3:09 PM

She elicits such ennui in me. No strong feelings. Am bored thinking about her.

But I do have strong feelings about the crappy batman movies. Clooney can go suck bat nipples forever because that man is a human, embodied smirk. Val Kilmer -- even as Bruce Wayne in a crappy movie -- ah, yes. Now there's a reason to go back and watch a crappy movie (with the sound off).

Posted by: klingonfree at February 1, 2012 3:24 PM

Freddy Got Fingered was brilliant idiocy. Where's your Le Baron?

Posted by: Riles at February 1, 2012 3:27 PM

As a regular poker player I fucking love the poster/cover for Lucky You.

King/Jack...it's a strong pocket, but something to shit your pants about? No. Maybe Ace/King suited, or pocket Kings would have been better. K/J is pretty strong but can still be busted by a pair of 6's.

...I play too much poker.

Posted by: PissBoy at February 1, 2012 3:28 PM

Drew Barrymore turned in one truly magnificent performance in her entire career -- E.T. -- and has been coasting on that ever since. That being said, Music & Lyrics wasn't half bad, although Hugh Grant had more to do with that than Drew. And I'll admit, I have a certain fondness for "Buddha's Delight." It's so bad, it's good. Om, shanti shanti ...

Posted by: PDamian at February 1, 2012 3:32 PM

•Chris O'Donnell. Ok, he was just as annoying in both films, I'll give you that. Posted by: NateS1973 at February 1, 2012 3:09 PM

I would like to be proactive and request a list of the good movies on O'Donnell's filmography.

Posted by: lubeg at February 1, 2012 3:45 PM

She was good in Grey Gardens.

A friend of mine absolutely hates her. I guess everyone has their Lea Michele.

She always makes fun of her "Carl" mouth.

(ie. Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack.)

Posted by: MRod at February 1, 2012 3:47 PM

This list is a fucking joke. Apparently, you've never seen such gems as Motorama or Far From Home. She's made much worse than what's on this list.

Oh, and by the way, there were "Bat Nipples" in Batman Forever, dumbass.

Posted by: Juicy Weatherbee at February 1, 2012 3:57 PM

First off, was Barrymore's appearance in Freddy Got Fingered even up to a level of a Cameo? She was the receptionist according to IMDB. I had to look that up, since I don't even remember her in it. That said, it is an awesome movie and I love almost every minute of it (except the parts that include Drew Barrymore which I apparently must have blacked out).

Posted by: Green Eggs and Hamster at February 1, 2012 3:59 PM

Duplex? Yeesh.

Posted by: TheEmpress at February 1, 2012 4:13 PM

I think the harder list is naming 12 good ones.

Scream
E.T.
Donnie Darko
...?

Posted by: Jeremy at February 1, 2012 4:13 PM

Drew Barrymore is just a bad subject for a list like this. Almost at the same level as "Crappiest Val Kilmer Movies" or "The Forty-odd Adam Sandler movies that are the largest wastes of time." It just feels unnecessary.

Posted by: AngelArm45 at February 1, 2012 4:24 PM

Dude. ChristianH, you've been wrong about many, many things* before, but never as wrong as you are about that.

I mean, holy crap.

But oh, Mel. You break my heart.

*Yeees, I am exaggerating. But STILL!

Posted by: figgy at February 1, 2012 5:01 PM

Her eyebrows alone seals the nomination for Mad Love but I draw the line at Firestarter

Posted by: Candy at February 1, 2012 5:24 PM

What about Doppelganger? Did everyone simply erase that suspenseful crapfest from their collective memories or am I the only one who's seen it (on late night TV)?

Posted by: thenchonto at February 1, 2012 2:40 PM

Holy Crap!
I caught that movie in the middle of the night once after coming home very drunk and none of my friends remember watching it.
Try to explain to your friends that movie and that they actually saw it with you and see how quickly you no longer have any friends.

Posted by: daria at February 1, 2012 5:34 PM

I agree with daria, how the hell is Doppelganger not on this list? God, it was shit throughout ... and then THAT ENDING.

*shudder* So much fail.

Posted by: CoronerCountess at February 1, 2012 5:45 PM

Oh, so little love for Music & Lyrics. _insert sad emoticon here_
I can't help it, I find it charming. It reminds me of endless hours of giggling, laughing and roaring with my sister, especially when watching the bloopers, and/or the PoP! music video that's also on the DVD... which I own, naturally. Please, do judge me. I also know "Pop! goes my heart" and "Way back into love" by heart. Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.

As to Firestarter and Home Fries: I'm happy they don't make that kind of movie poster any more. They do look trashy, aye? And is it just me, or does she look like Ashley Judd's younger sister in the Mad Love one? (Is it the hair? Is it the eyebrows?)

I'm with you Sam. Never Been Kissed is totally rufus.

And whilst she may do some godawful movies, you can't deny the woman is just gorgeous! I mean wow.

Posted by: Inquisitive Mind at February 1, 2012 6:55 PM

"Drew Barrymore turned in one truly magnificent performance in her entire career -- E.T. -- and has been coasting on that ever since."

Hmm. And her last name's legacy has absolutely nothing to do with it...

Posted by: Jerry at February 1, 2012 7:20 PM

I love Firestarter as a horror film. It's psychological horror with explosions. That's enough to throw people off. It is not a film that will ever please everyone, but it works for me.

Posted by: Robert at February 1, 2012 7:41 PM

Everyone who doesn't adore the sweetness of 50 First Dates can just get the hell out. That movie was frickin' adorable, minus any scene combining Sandler and a ukelele.

Posted by: Salieri2 at February 1, 2012 7:55 PM

I liked Music & Lyrics - mostly for Hugh Grant. The Pop! sountrack/video was hilarious.

Posted by: Diviya at February 1, 2012 8:36 PM

Fuck You! Going The Distance was awesome an funny! And I'm a guy that doesn't like rom-coms ;) And it is my exe's favorite rom-com which should make me hate it more, right?

Posted by: The Minn at February 1, 2012 9:07 PM

DON'T EVEN. Poison Ivy was sooo illicit and good and wrong all at the same time. I taped it and watched it so many times when my parents weren't at home. When I was 13.

Posted by: Rebecca H. at February 1, 2012 11:04 PM

it is barrymore's critical misfortune to be cast in the romcom
genre, a slice of filmdom that is easy to deride and one which
pajabians in particular love to ridicule. too bad because she is
pretty talented and most of her films provide 2 hours of
entertainment. " music and lyrics " was hardly bland and the
grant/barrymore chemistry worked just fine. i realize that it
isn't for everyone but i can't understand why viewers that trash
movies that feature the barrymores, anistons and heigls of the
world annoy themselves by watching them.

Posted by: snake at February 1, 2012 11:40 PM

I really enjoyed Going the Distance. Charlie Day helped of course.

Posted by: Julie at February 2, 2012 1:36 AM

you can just shut your mouth about never been kissed. that movie is 90s teen movie perfection.

Posted by: Ashley at February 2, 2012 4:00 AM

Just a quick quibble - let's cut DM some slack for Firestarter. After all, she was just a kid and there are plenty of so-called adults continuously screwing up Stephen King adaptations.

Posted by: cinekat at February 2, 2012 5:05 AM

I found Going the Distance to be a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable romcom, but I'm not like, gonna get mad about it or anything. Although I can't/won't defend the quality of Ever After, I own it and have probably watched it at least 10 times. I saw Fever Pitch in the theater and didn't want to kill anyone to get my $5 matinee money back. I agree with snake, "most of her films provide 2 hours of entertainment". I find Drew Barrymore movies generally to be the cinematic equivalent of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Worrying about the lack of nutrients is entirely beside the point.

Posted by: kucheza at February 2, 2012 9:30 AM

The only Drew movies I liked are the ones she made with Adam Sandler. But I loves me some Never Been Kissed.

Posted by: Adrien at February 2, 2012 10:06 AM

http://www.pajiba.com/image/madlovesrl1.jpg

Is this the unofficial prequel to "Sweet november" with that crazy blonde woman with the same short haircut?
I think I would have liked the movie if they had shown us how she killed O'Donell before stalking Keanu.

Posted by: James at February 2, 2012 1:11 PM

Drew Barrymore was Zoey Deschanel before Zoey Deschanel was Zoey Deschanel. Discuss.

Posted by: luthien26 at February 2, 2012 3:23 PM

I don't get all the hate for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. All of the pre Nolan Batman movies were an insult to the fans of the Comic Book. I mean the first movie came out a couple of years after the Miller comic book series Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One and Batman Year Two. The books were far superior to anything put on the screen.

Posted by: Comic Book Man at February 2, 2012 9:29 PM

@ComicBookMan 'Dark Knight Returns' is the most pretenious, overrated piece of shit comic that has ever been attached to the Batman name. 'Year One' is good for what it is, but ends as soon as it starts to get interesting.

Anyway, the only Drew Barrymore movie I've ever enjoyed was 'Scream' and that's because she wasn't in it long enough to ruin it.

Posted by: @Chrispeare at February 3, 2012 1:34 AM

Mad Love? Really? That movie is baby doll dress perfection. When I was 18 I was skinny & had that haircut. And my life was a wild sexy adventure. Minus the bipolarity.

Posted by: Bodhi at February 3, 2012 2:13 AM

nice job you've done. Good content and i enjoy spending 15 minutes a day reading all the new posts. Great job, tnx !!

Hi, i must say fantastic website you have, i stumbled across it in Yahoo. Does you get much traffic?

Posted by: Carroll B. Merriman at March 4, 2012 9:03 AM

The best one I ever saw was called (I think) Friday Night Lights, or something like that. I actually watched it on a screen that was set up on a football field, while I was in college.

Posted by: sbobet casino at March 15, 2012 1:25 AM

The only crapfest on this list is Freddy Got Fingered. Poison Ivy & Mad Love are much adored by many including myself. She needs to do more drama and take a break from the romcoms. She was great in Grey Gardens.

Posted by: Don at March 25, 2012 6:04 PM

The best football movie in terms of story lines is remember the titans because it shows true struggles the world had to live with at the time and how the game of football brought people from all races together.

Posted by: permainan bola at March 28, 2012 4:51 AM

music and lyric definately funny and entertaining

Well Poison Ivy is so hot.Tom skerritt is so hot. i like him. In his old age, he is still so hansome, mature, and definately sexy

Drew Berrymore .She has a humour side of personality. I love her too
