Brooks Wheelan announced on Twitter that he had been fired from Saturday Night Live last night. Honestly, it did not come as a surprise.
Look: It’s a tough gig. Wheelan admitted himself (in his audition) that he wasn’t really SNL material, and it was a tough year crowded with a lot of new featured players fighting for screen time (often with former cast members, who stole a lot of screen time with cameos this year). Wheelan didn’t really have much of a chance, although I’m sure that he — like many others before him (including most recently, Casey Wilson, Michaela Watkins, Abby Elliott, and Jenny Slate) — can have a very successful career without SNL. In a couple of years, SNL will be a footnote on his CV that every journalist will frustratingly ask about while he’s trying to promote a new project.
Still, Wheelan left an impressive Best Of Reel, which you can watch here in its entirety.
No, but seriously, there was one other good sketch, too. Unfortunately, it was cut from the show. Still, it’s not much of a legacy, but at least he left a bigger — or at least, not a smaller — impression than these 10 former cast members.
Morwenna Banks (1995)
Beth Cahill (1991-92)
George Coe (Original cast member, but only credited as such for one episode)
Siobhan Fallon (1991-92)
Laurie Metcalf (1981) (To be fair, she was in only one episode)
Jerry Minor
Emily Prager (1981) (she was credited as a featured player, but never actually appeared while she was a cast member. She did, however, appear in five uncredited roles before becoming a cast member)
Tim Robinson (2012-2013) (he’s still around in the writers’ room!)
Pamela Stephenson (1984-85)
Patrick Weathers (1980-81) (only lasted 7 episodes)
