Mindhole Blowers: What Could've Been Edition -- The Early and Nearly Catastrophic Casting Choices for 15 Teen Comedies

By Dustin Rowles | Seriously Random Lists | May 30, 2013 | Comments ()

1. Juliette Lewis — yes, that Juliette Lewis — was originally offered the lead of Mia Thermopolis in Princess Diaries, which would eventually go to the more age-appropriate Anne Hathaway, who was nine years younger.

2. Josh Hartnett and Ashton Kutcher got beat out by Heath Ledger for the role of Patrick in 10 Things I Hate About You.

3. Based on the audition process, the cast of Clueless could’ve ended up with this composition: Reese Witherspoon as Cher, Terrence Howard as Murray, Zooey Deschanel as Tosh, Seth Green as Travis and Lauryn Hill for Dionne.

4. Kirk Cameron was nearly cast as Lloyd Dobler instead of John Cusack in Say Anything. KIRK CAMERON.

5. Elijah Wood was originally cast opposite Melissa Joan Hart in Drive Me Crazy, but he was replaced by Adrian Grenier because Wood looked too young.

6. Melissa Joan Hart was originally offered the role of Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) in I Know What You Did Last Summer.

7. The part of Veronica (Winona Ryder) in Heathers was written for Jennifer Connelly, but she turned it down. Likewise, Brad Pitt was rejected for the part of J.D. (Christian Slater) because he was “too nice.”

8. Gary Oldman was first offered the title role in Edward Scissorhands, while Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey and Robert Downey Jr. were all considered before Tim Burton landed on Johnny Depp, who drafted Winona Ryder away from The Godfather III, so you can blame Depp for Sofia Coppola’s appearance in Godfather III.

9. Ironically, Joshua Jackson (R.I.P.) was also considered for the role of Mox in Varsity Blues, which Jackson’s “Dawson’s Creek” co-star, James Van Der Beek, would land.

10. Logan Lerman auditioned for the role in Easy A that would go to Dan Byrd. Fortunately, Emma Stone (whose audition reel was the actual webcam footage at the beginning of the film) left Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch to do Easy A.

11. Jim Carrey and Ally Sheedy nearled ended up in Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald’s roles in 16 Candles.

12. Clint Howard was considered for the role of Ricky in Better Off Dead, the movie that John Cusack now famously hates because John Cusack is a douche.

13. Stephen Dorff was considered for Wil Wheaton’s role in Stand by Me.

14. Rob Lowe, John Cusack, Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. and Michael J. Fox were all considered for the role of Ferris Bueller while both Anthony Michael Hall and Emilio Estevez turned down the role of Cameron.

15. Paul Newman was considered for James Dean’s role in Rebel without a Cause.

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

Now I know I'm pretty, but I ain't as pretty as a couple of titties.

  • Kirstini

I'm not sure about Zooey D, y'all. This info is lifted directly from IMDB (right down to the "Tosh"), and they would have been casting for Clueless in 1994, when Zooey was 14. She's ages with me, and I remember feeling that these people were MUCH older than me when the film came out.

  • Even Stevens

Ok, Seth Green as Travis would have been awesome. And while I'm so glad Alicia Silverstone got it, it's not like Reese would have been a disaster.

  • Arran

Some of these casting choices actually sound better.

That's right, I'm talking about Kirk Cameron in Say Anything. What an improvement!

  • general rhubarb

I have just been over looking at the Pajiba Dictionary. I was filled with a wave of nostalgia. I miss so many things:

    Boo and her katana
    Ann’s drinking game
    And Alabama Pink

I may need salsa and tacos for lunch to cheer me up…

  • BSlim had some goddamn issues and Pookie was a hot-ass mess, but dammit if they didn't make it lively up in here. I'm gonna pour some out on the curb for 'em all...

  • Mrs. Julien

Pookie is still around, he's using another name due to Disqus issues.

  • e jerry powell

And the weird part is that Anne Hathaway is still nine years younger than Juliette Lewis.

I still salute the sun every day that Kirk Cameron never actually became a thing.

Elijah Wood will always look too young. As will Topher Grace.

I don't think that Paul Newman was quite sexually ambiguous enough to play opposite Sal Mineo. Plus which Newman was a good six years older than James Dean, and Newman was probably doing Picnic on Broadway at the time, and there's just no way Newman could have missed that (having lobbied for the lead, but ultimately playing the lead's best friend).

  • DeltaJuliet

I hope you will use ANY excuse to feature that screenshot of Rob Lowe from here on out. I die every time I see it.
Also, Paul Newman was the HOTNESS! Damn.

  • Speaking of James Van Der Beek, I've been watching the unaired episodes of Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23. I'm not sure the Beek will ever get to be that brilliant again. I miss the hell out of that show.

As if 10 Things I Hate About You wasn't awesome on it's own, now when I watch it I giggle uncontrollably every time Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon Levitt are in a scene together. I think Christopher Nolan is a fan of the movie and planned to cast them as the Joker and John Blake all along. Cause I mean come on, haven't you seen every non-Batman Nolan film?

  • TheReinaG

Lauryn Hill & Terrence Howard? So in this world Clueless wouldn't actually be made because the epic dickfaceness that this pairing would have resulted in.

  • dizzylucy

Tom Cruise as Edward Scissorhands hurts my head.

If you scroll through quickly and mistake Rob Lowe for Lucille Bluth, you are not alone.

  • Mohammed Al Qemzi

Oh thank God! I thought it was just me!

  • Mrcreosote

John Cusack hates Better Off Dead? Does he know the street value of that movie? Geez, it's like his career-go down real fast-if something gets in your way, turn.

  • Samantha Klein

GOD, Terrence Howard as Murray. I think that's going to give me nightmares.

As much as I love Heathers, Ryder, and Slater, I would like to see a Connelly/Pitt version.

  • Patti

Ain't nothing hotter than Paul Newman in the 1960s.

  • zeke_the_pig

  • Bandit

Can you imagine Reese Witherspoon and Lauryn Hill as best friends?

  • SugarSmak

Feel free to find any excuse to post anything about Rob Lowe, because I am living for those photos of him from the Liberace movie.

Also, I worked at Universal Studios in Orlando when Nickelodeon was still producing shows there and I ran into Dan Schneider (the only person who could EVER be Ricky in "Better Off Dead") in the employee cafeteria on a number of occasions. It took everything in my power not to walk up to him and say, "Gee, Ricky, I'm sorry your Mom blew up."

  • lowercase_see

    Way harsh, Tosh.

  • Scootsa1000

I don't even want to think about a version of Clueless that doesn't have Faison in it.

  • Bert_McGurt

Interestingly, Newman gained his first real recognition for Somebody Up There Likes Me, where he replaced James Dean after the latter's famous car accident.

  • sean

I am fine with a universe that had Brad Pitt and Jennifer Connely in Heathers. I also can imagine a world where they bred, producing the world's most beautiful person.

  • atoz15

    Angie's not so bad herself

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

And now I have to watch True Romance again. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Teahan

Who was Tosh in Clueless? There was a Josh, and a Tai, is this some hybrid of the two?

  • tamatha_uhmelmahaye

I'm pretty sure it's just a typo. I figured he meant Tai.

  • Rebecca Kate

Oh, I'd watch that movie. Yes, who is Tosh!?

  • Monica

Zooey doesn't have that kind of range, c'mon.

  • toblerone

    Joshua Jackson (R.I.P.)?

    Wait, Pacey is DEAD???

2.Heath Ledger... 10 Things I Hated About You... To think, Ledger may not have fallen into drugs if he hadn't been in that piece of sh*t.

    15. Paul Newman... Disaster how? I totally see Newman being awesome (as he was in all things) in that role.

  • tobelrone, thanks for being unafraid to ask about the Pacey thing. I was seriously going to freak the frak out. You're also absolutely right about Paul Newman. That man was awesome right up until the day he died. I am going to have to disagree with you about 10 Things, though. So much to love about that movie - Heath, Baby JGL, and young Krum!

  • toblerone

Okay Okay, perhaps it should be:

To think, Ledger may not have fallen into drugs if he had not been so successful at such an early age because of T.T.I.H.A.Y....

  • That I can absolutely support! :)

  • freetickles

10 Things is great. Best teen movie of the past 20 years after Can't Hardly Wait.

  • Both is those movies are fucking amazing. They used to play "Can't Hardly Wait" on HBO and Show time constantly and I would watch it every single time. The best part is that almost the entire cast went on to do more cool stuff. I love that Claire from Six Feet Under was in it.

  • Mrs. Julien

Just in case you're serious: It's a Pajiba thing. The Overlords do that whenever Joshua Jackson (R.I.P.) is mentioned. I think it originated in an elaborate ruse.

  • toblerone

Thanks Mrs. J. PAJIBA!!!!!!!! Why no love for Peter Bishop?

  • Mrs. Julien
  • Batesian

    1. Thanks for the head's up; I had no idea this existed.
    2. Charming "Potota"?! Did Dan Quayle write this entry?
    3. Yeah, I made a Dan Quayle joke.

  • Aaron Schulz

Charlie from the mighty ducks needs love, you leave him alone!

  • zeke_the_pig

If Ashton Kutcher had been cast in 10 Things I Hate About You, the title of the movie would had to have been '78 (And Counting) Things I Hate About You. You Prick.'
