Hello, children. Are you hungover from the weekend?

Me too.

You know what they say: Nothing cures pain on the brain like a good explosion in the mind. Yes indeed, it’s time once again for a assembly line of scintillating facts as Reddit asks the question: ‘What Fact Blows Your Mind Every Time?’

You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights:

Blue eyes are younger than pottery.

In a room of 23 people, there is a 50% chance two people share the same birthday. With 70 people, the probability is 99.9%.

111,111,111 x 111,111,111= 12,345,678,987,654,321

The modern day BBC series of Sherlock did not have to change Dr. John Watson’s backstory of him being a former army medic injured in Afghanistan.

This was originally stated way back in 1887 with A Study in Scarlet.

When they first measured Everest it was a bizarrely round number so they added a few fake inches so people would be more likely to believe them!

All planets in the solar system fit between the earth and the moon, the sun does not.

The sound made by the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883 was so loud it ruptured eardrums of people 40 miles away, travelled around the world four times, and was clearly heard 3,000 miles away.

That’s like you standing in New York and hearing a sound from San Francisco.

More french soldiers died during WW1 than american soldiers during the entire US military history, including both sides of the civil war.

The symbol for division (÷) is just a blank fraction with dots replacing the numbers. I learned this about a week ago and i’m still wondering how I never noticed.

People who are born deaf and happen to be schizophrenic have some weird experiences. Someone born deaf, that has never been able to hear, uses Sign Language as their actual language. Not a representative language. Like the sign for water just is water, not the sign for water. When these people are schizophrenic and “hear” voices, they actually see disembodied hands floating in mid air signing to them.

That the Pillars of Creation, of which the first Hubble pictures were taken in 1995, hasn’t existed in 6,000 years.

Naked mole rats just don’t get cancer.

Yes, like Rufus from Kim Possible. They live exceptionally long for a rodent (like 30 fucking years) at least partially because they never naturally develop cancer (and it’s a bitch to give them cancer in a lab).

We like to think of cancer as a family of diseases and that it’s naive to anticipate a singular “cure” for all “cancer.” But Mother Nature figured it out.

And she wasted it on these ugly subterranean fucks.

“There are more molecules of water in a teaspoon than there are teaspoons of water in the Pacific Ocean.”

Hold my beer. I’m diving in.

Volume of the Pacific ocean: 660,000,000 km3 according to NOAA.

= 6.6 * 1023 cm3

= 6.6 * 1023 mL

= 1.3 * 1023 teaspoons of water in the Pacific ocean

Now how many molecules of water are there in a teaspoon? We can get number of molecules by multiplying moles by Avogadro’s number. We can get moles from grams and water’s molecular weight. We can get grams from volume, because conveniently 1 mL of water weighs 1 g (thanks, metric system).

1 mL /0.202884 teaspoon * 1 gram water / 1 mL * 1 mole / 18 gram water * (6.022 * 1023 molecules) / 1 mole

= 1.6477 * 1023 molecules per teaspoon of water

This fact is extra interesting, because teaspoons of water in the pacific ocean and molecules of water in a teaspoon are actually pretty close. If the Pacific ocean had a volume that were one quarter greater, this fact would be wrong.

Nearly everything happening inside your body, all those multitudes of cascading chemical reactions, all those cells whizzing to and fro, is all happening in pitch black.

We like to imagine things happening in our body and like to think of pretty pink hues and colorful cells and organs. In reality its all happening in utter darkness.

Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg. He died from the infection.

From the time it was discovered (1930) to the time it was declassified as a planet (2006), Pluto didn’t complete even one revolution around the sun.

Genghis Khan and his Mongolian Empire would kill so many people he caused an actual drop in CO2 levels and lands were scorched and forests replaced them.

The T-Rex lived closer in time to us than it did to the Stegosaurus. Millions of years is an extremely hard thing to grasp with my incredibly mortal mind

Baby’s don’t have knee caps. Spent like 10 mins examining daughter’s knees. No knee cap.

France was still executing people by guillotine when Star Wars was released.

That California’s population is more than my entire country (Canada).

You can hear the difference between hot and cold water while it is pouring
