The Trump White House wants you afraid. They want you to believe that immigrants are dangerous. So they draw attention to terror attacks committed by people of color, while blatantly ignoring those committed by white men. They’ve created a special hotline to report crimes of “aliens” (and got deliciously trolled when people called in about extraterrestrials misdeeds.) They want you to fear Muslims, Mexicans, and refugees. And it’s a dog whistle heard loud and clear by followers all too happy to exploit people’s tendencies to cruise headlines for news. Considering the Trump team’s hard reliance on scare tactics and fake news, it’s little wonder his supporters have turned to horror to go viral again.

Maybe you heard the vague story of a 7-month pregnant woman who was brutally beaten by a refugee in Oklahoma. It was “news” run by True Trumpers and The New York Evening.

And here are BOTH of those stories as they are posted today.

Neither has an article, just the same headline, and the latter boasts a horrific photo that suggests it’s of the unnamed victim, while True Trumpers used it in a now deleted Facebook post. But horror fans were quick to correct the New York Evening, pointing out that’s actually a still from Proxy, a 2013 horror film about a pregnant woman who loses her child after a vicious attack.

Still, neither site pulled the “news article”* (and I use both of those words very loosely), and New York Evening didn’t even pull that initial tweet. Because of course not. They don’t care if they got it right. Snopes claims they are both “known purveyors of fake news.” This isn’t about news. This isn’t even the first time it’s happened. It’s about outrage, and giving Trump supporters the fuel they need to stay blind to the White House’s crass campaign to channel rage into supporting an agenda that’s less about helping the American people (all or even most of us), and more about lining the pockets of Trump, his family, and his millionaire business partners.

We reached out to Proxy writer/director Zack Parker, who speaks volumes in under 140 characters.

*UPDATE: Between writing this article and posting it, BOTH sites pulled the posts. But Snopes has links to the archived pages.
