For the Record, Al Franken and John Conyers Should Resign, As Well

I just want to put this out there, so it doesn’t seem like we’re ignoring the folks on our side, because every time another man goes down for sexual misconduct, we all rightfully ask, “Then why not Trump?” But the thing is, I get lost on right-wing Twitter on occasion, and I see stuff like, “Why should Roy Moore pull out of the race if John Conyers and Al Franken haven’t resigned?”

Our kneejerk reaction is probably to say, “Fuck you. They didn’t sleep with kids.” Or “What Al Franken has been accused of is not nearly as bad as what Roy Moore has been accused of.”

True. But it doesn’t matter. This is not a game of, “Who did what to who and how bad?” We cannot hold the other side accountable if we do not hold our own accountable, even if that means forcing Democratic members of Congress to resign while Republican members refuse.

John Conyers is apparently a huge lech. He’s given up his seat on the Judiciary Committee and he says he’s not running for re-election next year, but that’s not enough. He’s gotta go. From what I understand, Pelosi — after making some very ill-advised statements — is now trying to force his resignation from behind the scenes. That needs to happen.

Meanwhile, come on, Al! A fifth woman surfaced this morning, an army veteran who said that Franken cupped her breasts during a photoshoot in 2003. From CNN:

“When he put his arm around me, he groped my right breast. He kept his hand all the way over on my breast,” Kemplin said in an interview. “I’ve never had a man put their arm around me and then cup my breast. So he was holding my breast on the side.”

Al, shit like this is just going to keep coming out. Every day, and every time they do, we all lose that much more respect for you. Get out while you still have a shred of dignity. Make yourself the example that we should be setting. That’s the best way to salvage what’s left of your reputation. Just say, “We cannot expect to hold Republicans — or any other men — accountable for their actions if we do not hold ourselves to the same standards. I acted inappropriately on multiple occasions, and I am taking responsibility for that by resigning and I would hope that others who are accused of doing the same will follow suit.”

Anyway, to the two conservatives who accidentally stumbled upon this post while looking for something else: We want Franken and Conyers to resign as much as you do. But we also want Roy Moore to quit and for someone to hold Donald Trump accountable. Let’s be equitable here and throw out all the scumbags and “overly friendly” men who grab boobs and butts regardless of party.

Update: Another woman has accused Al Franken of sexual misconduct after he attempted to give her a “wet, open mouthed kiss.”
