Evening Briefing: 25 Year Old Arrested for Leaking Top Secret Document Re: Russian Hacking

— The big news of the day is that The Intercept published a report based on a leaked classified document that the FBI really didn’t want leaked that shows that the Russians made attempts to hack into the United States voting infrastructure just two days before the election, hacking into voting software in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, New York and Virginia. An investigation into the hacks was apparently provoked by information obtained in April 2017.

Unfortunately, as much focus is being paid to the leaker of the Top Secret document as is being paid to the document itself. A 25-year-old National Security Agency contractor named Reality Winner has been arrested for leaking the document, and yes, that is apparently her real name. Reality has asked her mom to take care of her pets while she is in custody.

Winner-Davis said the allegations against her daughter were vague when they spoke Sunday.

“I don’t know who she might have sent it to,” she said. “[DOJ] were very vague. They said she mishandled and released documents that she shouldn’t have, but we had no idea what it pertained to or who.”

The most her daughter talked about was her pets.

“She called us yesterday night. She asked if we could help out with relocating her cat and dog,” Winner-Davis said.

Thank you, Reality Winner, for releasing information to the public that the government should have released MONTHS ago.

— Donald Trump’s Twitter feed continues to be a fountain of stupidity.

Someone should probably tell Trump that 1) the Republicans control the Senate; 2) there is no filibuster; and 3) HE ACTUALLY HAS TO NOMINATE PEOPLE BEFORE THEY CAN BE APPROVED.

— One more position that Trump will have to fill is the number two at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, after David Rank — a 27-year officer of the Foreign Services — resigned today.

He told his staff that as “a parent, a patriot and a Christian,” he could not in good conscience play a role in implementing President Trump’s decision to withdraw [in the Paris Climate Accord].

— In polling news, 59 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Climate Accord; only 28 percent approve. Meanwhile, there is now more support for Donald Trump’s impeachment than support for the President himself. According to the latest Gallup poll, Trump’s approval rating is 36 percent; 43 percent of Americans want impeachment proceedings to begin.

— This morning, George Conway — Kellyanne Conway’s husband, who also recently took himself out of consideration for a position leading the Justice Department, Civil Division — criticized Donald Trump’s Travel Ban tweets, and even suggested that Trump was “Sad!”

Kellyanne Conway, meanwhile, had a terrible morning on the talk show circuit, where it appeared that she is out of the loop again at the White House, as she continued to talk out of her ass while later statements from Sarah Huckabee Sanders contradicted Conway.

— Yesterday, during the Sunday talk shows, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt repeatedly stated that the coal industry has added 50,000 jobs in the last few months. Actual number: 538. So, he was close! Only 49,462 jobs away!

— In case you didn’t see, Sarah Huckabee Sanders — in addition to throwing Kellyanne Conway under the bus, and leaving the press with some confusion about Sean Spicer’s future role — also said that Trump would not invoke executive privilege to prevent James Comey from testifying on Thursday. It should be a nerve-shattering day, with Comey testifying and the elections in Britain.

— Finally, if you’re wondering what the POTUS is doing tonight, he’s apparently watching cable news and ranting about the TRAVEL BAN.
