Zac Efron Get Punched by a Homeless Man, Natalie Dormer Strips Down, and the Shuttering of an Adored Website

By Dustin Rowles | Pajiba Love | March 27, 2014 | Comments ()

NBC has announced that it is sadly shutting down Television Without Pity, which sucks for a number of reasons, one of which is because a lot of people found this site through TwoP. Even more people found GoFugYourself through TwoP and then found us through the FugGirls back in our early days (including Joanna). On the bright side, you can still visit PreviouslyTV, a great television website that is ran by one of the original TwoP founders, Sarah D. Bunting. (Previously TV)

Carl from The Walking Dead has a stunt double who is a 31 year old woman, and she’s a goddamn dead ringer. (WG)

A homeless man hit Zac Efron the hardest he’s ever been hit in his life this week. I don’t care if he got hit the face, I just hope his abs weren’t bruised. (Dlisted)

Emma Watson, that is one f**king classy dress, lady. (GFY)

CBS brought Julianna Margulies and Josh Charles together to hold a wake after the dramatic departure of a character on The Good Wife. That’s not going to be enough, damnit. UNACCEPTABLE. (NYTimes)

I think Rebecca’s headline says it all: “What’s better than a dog? A dog wearing a crocheted unicorn mask.” Truer words have never been spoken. (TheMarySue)

Women are now the majority of film audiences, and yet they’re not really given the same choices as male moviegoers. WHY IS THAT AMERICA? (FSR)

Tyler Coates has sweetly put together a playist for Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s conscious uncoupling. The Tom Petty song is particularly inspired. (Flavorwire)

SCANDALOUS. James Van Der Beek used to let Justin Timberlake use his ID to sneak into clubs in the 90s. That scamp! (E!)

Here’s five things it’s too cool to hate anymore, including Lena Dunham. Wait? Is Lena Dunham too cool to hate, or is it uncool to hate on Lena Dunham because that’s so, like, last year? (Unreality)

Mad Men has made the cover of Time magazine. (Time)

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer is absent most of her clothes on the cover of GQ. She’s, uh, lovely. (FS)

The Wachowskis have released another trailer for Jupiter Ascending, and this movie looks #!$#!#@$ incredible. (Slashfilm)

Competitivenonfiction calls The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield "a gem of a story." A complex mystery about stories and literature, The Thirteenth Tale will provide fodder for many a discussion. (Cannonball Read 6)

I wrote an open letter to True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto for reasons better explained in the open letter. (Uproxx)

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • cranky_chick

I was a reader/poster over at TWoP since it was MBTV also and it was the way I discovered Pajiba. After Bravo took over, I just didn't like the atmosphere over there and the comments over here are just so much better, smarter and funnier. I'm sorry for the loss of what it was not what it became in the end.

  • Kayla

Anybody else find Pajiba through TVGasm? Another once great tv recap site.

  • fuzzwuzz

Welp, looks like my weekend will be dedicated to "waybacking" the Veronica
Mars recaps verrry slowly because apparently TWOP can't keep their
recaps to a single, merciful page >:(

  • e jerry powell

Have to drive those unique page impressions, right?

  • fuzzwuzz

Ha, yeah. So much for that pay-off.

  • Maddy

I mean, I'm pretty comfortable with my sexuality but HOLY CRAP Natalie Dormer is a babe.

  • e jerry powell

There's nothing wrong with a one-off, you know?

  • Ben

oh lord garterbelts... one of my numerous weaknesses. I'm going to need to go lie down for a bit.

  • kinoumenthe

TWOP ! Is that were I discovered Pajiba ?!
Everytime I try to remember how I ended up here, I come up with a blank. I found TWOP because of Veronica Mars (they had good recaps) so it would follow that I ended up on Pajiba from there…
I get the feeling it was either before or after 2005. Pajiba had that old banner (The Graduate) at the top, and kept it for years.

Good on you with the open letter Dustin. I'm not much for the theories, but if you enjoyed yourself, that's what counts.

  • narfna

Oh my God. I am spending this entire weekend going through TWOP and saving all my favorite recaps to my hard drive. This is a fucking travesty. THE INTERNET IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOREVER.

Wait, or is that diamonds? I might be confused.

  • John G.

Dustin, your open letter to Nic Pizzolatto is perfect. It's like you wrote it from inside my own brain. Thanks

  • John G.

Women are now the majority of film audiences, and yet they’re not really given the same choices as male moviegoers. WHY IS THAT AMERICA?

because women make up 3% or so of studio executives and maybe 8% of directors.

  • RAS

And WHY IS THAT, AM- oh never mind. That's one deep, depressing rabbit hole.

  • TacoBellRey

Natalie Dormer smiles like she knows when the world's going to end but she won't tell us.

  • e jerry powell

Apropos of nothing, but one of my favorite TWoP writers hit on me online a couple of months ago. I'm still very uncertain about that.

  • Wigamer

  • e jerry powell

I wouldn't want to publicize anyone's lack of taste in hitting on me.

  • Wigamer

I would consider that person to have excellent taste. I'd hit on you (insert eyebrow waggle).

  • e jerry powell

    You're too kind.

  • So....I should really be watching this GoT thing, huh?

  • grr arrgh

Yes. There's only 10 episodes of the first season. I finally got hooked roughly halfway through and loved it by season two. Besides, Peter Dinklage is awesome.

  • First watch the first couple seasons of The Tudors first, she's Anne Bolicious in that show.

  • e jerry powell

    Historical porn!

    (Only not nearly porn-y enough.)

  • Mrs. Julien

We were watching GoT last night and I turned to Mr. J and said, "I suspect Natalie Dormer is insanely sexy. Am I right?" His answer will surprise no one. Even I can't look away from her mouth.

  • logan

As always you show your sound judgment and exquisite taste.

  • Considering your previous statements in this regard, I am sure his answer included one of the three:

    1) backflips
    2) modification of his freebie list, or YOUR freebie list
    3) requests for details

  • Mrs. Julien

I hate to disappoint, but it was an emphatic affrimation of my hypothesis. It did not revise my freebies list (she's not packing the tackle I require for inclusion) and Mr. J's list is between him and his God, but I suspect not.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Women are now the majority of film audiences, and yet they’re not really given the same choices as male moviegoers.

I'm pretty sure we are given exactly the same choices as male moviegoers. We might be less drawn to them, but I've yet to be turned away from a movie because I possess a v-card. (though I haven't tried to see The Raid 2 yet.)

  • Mrs. Julien

You have a CARD? I never got a card.

    It's because I'm Canadian, isn't it?

  • Sara_Tonin00

    I do. It's laminated.

I have other cards pronouncing me a dilettante, and also a "10th one free" punch card for the gentlemen.

  • e jerry powell

Just to clarify: you're talking about the card being laminated and not your vagina, right?

Sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake.

  • Jim

Surely it's the card - like our g-card. (But I think I got mine for that movie I made to "get money for university")

  • Sara_Tonin00

Ah, an important distinction. And yes. The card.

The lamination on the hoo-ha was worn away ages ago.

    (too much?)

  • Too much? NOT ENOUGH.

  • L.O.V.E.

too much? perhaps, seeing as the lamination has worn off, but its nothing a good shellacking can't fix.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    *schedules a good shellacking*

    *underlines "good" twice*

  • e jerry powell

I have to hide the camera first!

  • 10th WHAT free, exactly?

    I need to know for...REASONS.

  • Sara_Tonin00

It varies, depending on the gentleman. (and, I suppose, how gentle he is.)

  • TheOtherGreg

I believe is home to all three founders of TWoP - Sarah D. Bunting, Tara Ariano, and David T. Cole.

  • I was also going to say that so I'm glad that I took the time to actually read the comments. TWoP has been a shell of its former self for years. Long live & Extra Hot Great!

  • barcia

TWoP went downhill when it was sold. Glad Glark and Wing Chun were multi-millionaires after that (as per Ariano's blog at the time), but the site went to shite when they finished up their contractually obligated term of writing at TWoP.

  • I did find Pajiba because of TWoP, but I'm not sad to see a site go that encouraged spoiler threads in forums but banned you if you had real spoilers for Bravo/NBC programming. Not that I'm speaking from experience over multiple accounts or anything.

  • dizzylucy

I didn't even know NBC bought them, but I haven't been around there for a while. It was always a good place to discuss an obscure show, as there was a thread for just about everything.
The strict rules were always a bit annoying though.

  • They weren't as strict before Bravo took over. That's what shut down so many writers and users. Things that were always ok were suddenly mute-worthy offenses. Quite a few people jumped ship to Vote for the Worst and other snark sites that didn't police every period in their forums. The purchase brought a lot of publicity, but also radically shifted the tone of the site.

  • I was a dedicated TWOP commenter until the Bravo buyout, it's also how I found Pajiba, and I quit navigating there after a weeklong ban for talking smack about a Bravo show. The shuttering is long past due.

  • e jerry powell

Oh, hell, I sent hate mail to Andy Cohen directly. Every time NBC sent me one of their little focus group quizzes, I went out of my way to mention Andy Cohen's name derisively as often as possible.

What else is there to talk smack about if not Bravo programming?

  • Remember when they banned people from discussing the Real Housewives shows because reasons? Good times. Good times.

  • Oh yes, those bitches. I remember that they first banned using any of the nicknames people had come up with for Real Housewives, and I also remember them locking down the John and Kate Plus 8 thread about a million times.

ETA: I guess if I'm being fair, some of those nicknames were really nasty.

  • e jerry powell

I'm sure not all of those nicknames were entirely unearned...

  • lillie

I read the open letter over on Warming Glow. I thought it was very well written and an enjoyable read. Then I read the comments. Jesus Christ, there are some harsh critics over there. Some make the snarkiest of Pajibans seem like goddamn Mary Poppins

  • L.O.V.E.

85% of them are a variation of "Bring Back Matt", a guy who if I recall correctly left on his own accord, but now goes into the comments section and fans the flames.

I used to give Rowles shit on pajiba, but now that he has a dedicated anti-fan club at uproxx all the fun of trolling has been taken from me. Those fucknuts.

  • pajiba

I had to stop reading the comments there many months ago because I have feelings.

  • Repo

You really should have backed off the whole Chibbs working with the Irish thing. ;)

  • L.O.V.E.

Based on the commentary directed towards Anna Gunn on that site and the bouts of frat-pack vitriol, you should just go ahead and wear the ire like a badge of honor. Some of those dudes just aint right.

  • grr arrgh

Plus they've got a raging hard on for True Detective, so saying anything that could possibly be construed as negative is not taken lightly.

  • L.O.V.E.

Well, once Alexandra Daddario came on screen with those magnificent *eyes* a spell was cast and Nic Pizzalotto was made Genius Exemplar.

  • grr arrgh

Ah yes, of course. It comes down to a 15 second shot of tits. I'm with Dustin though. Don't introduce some incredibly interesting elements and then just drop them. I want to know more about the cult and who were in it and why it was started. I want to know so much more of the story.

  • grr arrgh

A lot of them are basically saying "He told you not to focus on the mystery" and that's a perfectly valid point, but yeah, way harsh over there.

  • lillie

Exactly. I got the point they were making and yeah, it was valid, but damn, there are kinder ways of saying so.

  • grr arrgh

And more constructive ways. You can disagree with an opinion, but you don't have to be an asshole about it.

  • Bob Genghis Khan

Riiiiiight, Zac Efron. You were just casually driving around in Skid Row, the way you just sort of slipped on that puddle and broke your jaw.

  • BlackRabbit

The first rule about Skid Row is...

  • TwoP has been mostly horrible since Jacob took over and Bravo/NBC bought them in the first place. For TV commentary I go to the Onion AV Club. That is some excellent writing and almost always comes up with great insight rather than just snarking on stuff which gets pretty boring after awhile.

The Unreality link is routing to the MarySue crochet unicorn hat. FYI.

  • Women are now the majority of film audiences, and yet they’re not really
given the same choices as male moviegoers. WHY IS THAT AMERICA?

We get Sabotage (mindless, derivative). Women get Divergent (mindless, derivative).

  • It would be more newsworthy if Natalie Dormer kept her clothes on. To be clear: I adore her, and was stoked to see her on Game of Thrones.

  • Green Lantern

WHAT? No more TwoP?? That's horrible.

    Boo on you, NBC! BOOOOOO!

  • sherryb23

I was incredibly distressed to hear about this. They've been my mainstay for (coughs discreetly) about a decade now. Ugh. Not a happy camper.

  • BiblioGlow

Me too! I've been reading them since the site was Mighty Big TV and I was in high school. Those writers taught me TONS about writing comedy, and about writing television. I'm so sad to learn that the archives are going to be completely unavailable. The internet just won't be the same without that bank of television love and snark on it somewhere.

  • Hopefully Fametracker will rise again out of its ashes like a phoenix.

  • e jerry powell

    Probably not. Sigh.

  • Lucie

The end of the Fametracker forum is one of the best fandom wanks...

  • Berry

I unreasonably, but passionately, hate Television without pity, so there's a strong temptation to indulge in schadenfreude, but I'll resist, because it is sad that people lose jobs and see their work go to waste. But still. TWOP. Ugh. Don't even ask me to explain it. It's just one of those things.

  • grr arrgh

I always found that site to be incredibly mean-spirited and their recaps pointless. I'm like you, sorry people are out of work but not quite sad over the site itself.

  • Berry

Now I feel like my opinion has been validated by Bernard Black himself, and it feels good. Odd. But good.

  • grr arrgh

I think I'll consider this my good deed of the day. Oh and major high fives for being a Black Books fan.

  • Three_nineteen

Pointless and mean sounds right up Bernard's alley.

  • Berry

Somehow the TWOP brand of mean doesn't strike me like it would be Bernard's. It's too impressed with its own cleverness. And then there's the fact that the forums foster communities. Groups. Friendships. Communication. Sharing. No.

  • grr arrgh

THAT. That is exactly why I hated that site. "Oh ha ha, we're so mean and clever. You peasants don't understand how clever we are".

  • grr arrgh

Bernard wouldn't be reading tv sites anyway. Cuts into his heavy drinking and shouting time.

  • L.O.V.E.

    Ah, all the pretties

  • We've seen all this before. Why so overly posed?

  • logan

Natalie's mouth/lips/crooked smile makes me think of... things i should not say in case Mrs. J reads this.

  • Mrs. Julien

Oh, the irony. Please see below.

  • What's with that shaved side hair style?

  • DominaNefret

    It is SO HOT.

  • grr arrgh

She's in the next Hunger Games movie and that character has a completely shaved head in the book. I think they compromised and let her shave just the side.

  • Blake

Who's she playing? I thought it was an expression of grief since things are gonna get dark(er) in G.o.T.

  • L.O.V.E.

Either way, she's got a punk sentimentality going on that is hot as fuck and those stilettos are kickin'

  • Afferbeck

I feel like if I look at nude pics of Moriarty/Margaery I will soon find myself assassinated in a ditch.

  • e jerry powell
