after finally getting the first 6 episodes of "reaper" on itunes, i absolutely agree that kevin smith needs to come back. there is far too little kevin to go around!
this also explains, at least to me, why the character of "sock" was so much better in the pilot... he was the UNsilent bob of the show.

anyway, thanks, litely, for that link. now, dammit, if they'd just schedule it so its not on opposite "house"! i just loves me some hugh laurie!

That "Reaper" article stated exactly what I felt went wrong about the show. Especially the Sam/Andi mess. That was about the dumbest and most laughable backtracking I have ever seen. Plus, they establish an interesting mythology system in which the stories exist, but don't stick to them. The DMV thing is the most glaring example.

Alex is probably the only person I know of that can make evolution sound cute. Plus, I think she was channeling Bucky O'Hare with that "planet Alex" of hers. Too bad socalledonlycousins and I failed in our own "British invasion." Don't know why he had to punch that royal guard. They really don't have to stand there and take it, you know.

Jessica Alba really needs to stop. It is getting really difficult to picture her naked on top of other women with her prattling on.

That Reaper article was dead-on balls accurate. The recent straying-from-formula (the Patton Oswalt episode structure, the hints of the Devil's backstory, Sam's dad/contact backstory) has helped a little. More of that please.

And the secret-from-Andi thing? UGH. Let's count the number of shows this season where main characters are unnecessarily forced by lazy writers to keep their secrets from trusted friends and loved ones:

REAPER: Sam and Andi
CHUCK: Chuck and his sister and best friend
JOURNEYMAN: Dan and his brother
PUSHING DAISIES: Ned and Olive, Chuck and her aunts

Oh, Jessica Alba, get over yourself. Hot and sexy are temporary. Tough and smart will last longer, but they take appreciably more effort. Just enjoy what you already have, and be sure to save your money.

Reaper seriously needs to change the formula around. A show with only 6-7 episodes aired should not have become predictable already.

Did anyone else notice how exhausted the shopping center magician looked after he expended all that energy doing his feats of illusion? He's got that look of modest fatigue down pat!

Daphne: Holy crap! "The Journey of Natty Gann"! My favorite movie, next to "The Goonies", of my prepubescent years.

I have been blinded by Ray Wise's freaky Leland Palmer that I completely forgot he played Mr. Gann.

While my fellow Pajibites extol the virtues of more well known Cusack fare like "Say Anything" or "Better Off Dead", the one and only movie where Cusack totally melted my heart was "Natty Gann".

Alabamapink, I can't say that Cusack has ever really melted my heart, but Natty Gann would be the movie where he came the closest to doing so. It might be time to make that DVD purchase.

The article on Reaper was fantastic. I still do love the show though, I'm down to nine shows I watch weekly and reaper is generally my third choice on a Tuesday evening (OK, I should explain - I get the last week's TV given to me on a Tuesday morning that way I have less chance of spoiling Heroes or Dexter for myself via the interwebs)... I agree about it being way too formulaic, they need to start trying something new. It seems like a lot of shows are scared to go with the whole "season mystery" angle at the moment, just incase they alienate the casual viewers.

I blame the investors.

Glad my mini-tutorial went down OK, I'd forgotten just how much I love genetics. Stupid neuroscience distracting me...

Yeah, and I really wanted to like it, too, but gave up. We ended up not pulling a single new show for our Tivo rotation this season, unless you count Mad Men and Californication, which are both already through Season 1. We tried Chuck, Journeyman, Life, Pushing Daisies, as well as Bionic Woman. I didn't really like any of them. I liked PD okay, but the woof was unmoved.

Well, I think comparing Chuck to Reaper in the secret regard is a bit unfair. Chuck's secret makes more sense than Sam's. The only people who know about Chuck's ability are in the government. He isn't singling anyone out; instead he tries to keep everyone in the dark. Just about everyone Sam cares about except Andi already knows about the soul thing. So Sam really has no reason to keep it from her other than being a dick. Plus, would YOU trust a guy like Morgan, who already has boundary issues and would use anything he knew to get what he wanted, with the knowledge that his best friend is a spy?

The only thing that I found equally annoying about Chuck was his hatred of his ex-roommate, Bryce(?). Every so often, he would lament about getting kicked out of Stanford and hating the guy soooooo much. But they resolved that last week, and now they can move on.

You make a good point about the Sam vs. Chuck comparison V, but you're forgetting one very important point: While Chuck may be verging on the Awesome, Sam is so freaking cute that, really, he can do whatever he damned well pleases.

This week's Reaper did a lot more to strengthen the backstory, the Devil gave someone his due, and the Sock/Gladys B-plot was hysterical. I enjoyed this one and last week;s almost as much as I enjoyed the pilot. On the strength of the last two episodes, I'm going to keep watching. (Also, it was great to see Mitch Pileggi again)
