Sarah Silverman is...god.

Wow- I think this is the only website I've visited today that hasn't posted a comment on the welcome performance to the VMAs (and no, I did not tune in).
I shall not ruin this glorious moment by mentioning any names.

Bravo!

I'm in Florida and I could hear Silverman bombing all the way from Vegas.

She should have dressed as Amy Winehouse. At least that would have been funny.

Posted by: wavemaven at September 10, 2007 3:56 PM

It's too bad she didn't get many laughs from the crowd. Why did MTV think it'd be a good idea to remove the "fan" element in favor of tables filled with coked up, bored-as-hell celebrities? I didn't watch the show itself, although I admit I did subect my eyes - and ears, oy - to the opening act. Jesus.

Posted by: Kolby at September 10, 2007 4:23 PM

Thanks for posting the link to the monologue. I had been wanting to see it all day, but I don't have sound on my computer at work. But now that I have seen it, the hairless vagina joke would have been a lot funnier if it wasn't common knowledge that she wussed out and had scheduled c-sections for both kids.

I don't know, I'm kind of over Sarah Silverman.

The nude masturbatory driving article brings up unpleasant memories of the individual who, last semester, drove on to my university campus at least twice and exposed his naked, masturbating self to female students before driving off. I was one of those lucky female students. Thanks for the memories, Pajiba.

I thought Sarah Silverman wasn't that on last night. I think she's easier to take when it's not like "....dude, she just walked off stage, have some pity on the girl for the sake of her chil.... damn. That's just mean." The only joke that hit (I thought) was the one about Amy Winehouse and that's because THAT particular drugged out bitch (it's easy to confuse them after all) was no where in sight.

Victoria Beckham looks just like a RealDoll in those photos.

Posted by: Jerce at September 10, 2007 4:44 PM

George Bush and Bin Laden have much more in common besides a deep love for pratfall humor.

There it is. When a site sincerely believes that this kind of crap is helpful or informative, then I'm done.

I like this site. I sincerely hope that when Bush leaves office, you'll be able to return to rational thought and refrain from demonizing your political opposition.

In the meantime, I've got friends who survived the 9/11 attacks in NYC and the Pentagon, and I've got friends who are currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. So rather than support your site while you blithely equate conservatives (like me) to a mass murderer who has declared war on America, is attacking my friends and family in the military, and is killing innocent civilians worldwide, I think I'll just bid you adieu. While I actively seek out opposing political viewpoints, I think I'll get my snarky movie reviews from someone who isn't so fixated on insulting both my character and intelligence.

Posted by: The Comish (sic) at September 10, 2007 4:46 PM

Wow, Comish, aside from the objectionable photo of Bush, what part of that wasn't true? Seriously, why is it so horrible to say Bush and Bin Laden have things in common? They have similar values, they just express them differently. Some by Congress sanctioned terrorism, others by Saudi-sanctioned terrorism. You can stand up for your values, say you're not like Bin Laden in a bunch of other ways, but as the link listed, it was pretty cut and dry.

BUT if it makes you feel better to get your snark elsewhere, C'est la vie.

Posted by: lilianna28 at September 10, 2007 5:10 PM

Sarah Silverman is...god.

She is? Thank goodness I gave up religion a couple of years ago.

I'm convinced the only reason she's still around is the cuteness factor. Same reason for Dane Cook (although I don't think he's cute). IMO, those two could not be any LESS funny. Is it possible to be negatively funny? If so, they fit the bill.

Posted by: Daphne at September 10, 2007 6:47 PM

You can disagree with the person who linked Bush and Osama, Cornish, and you have every right to disavow Pajiba for linking to it, if you wish, but do you really expect anyone to believe that you "actively seek out opposing political viewpoints"? That the conservatives in the white house and those conservatives on whom they have declared war share a great deal of philosophical common ground is not a particularly out-there idea, nor is it one that is exclusive to left-leaning thinkers. Why, if you really do think it is important to understand the thinking of those you disagree with, would this set you off? If you think dialogue between politically opposed people is important, wouldn't it be better to explain why you disagree with such reasoning, instead of falling back on the knee-jerk response that criticising our government somehow does a dishonor to the victims of 9/11 or the members of our armed forces? Few would deny that Bin Laden is a horror -- all that you take issue with here is the incontrovertible fact that a certain breed of conservative shares an uncomfortable number of important viewpoints with him. Don't want to be lumped with those conservatives? Then don't brand everyone who disagrees with you unpatriotic.

Posted by: BabyTyrone at September 10, 2007 7:18 PM

Before this gets out of hand, I would just like to state that I was attempting to be neither helpful nor informative -- simply making a joke about an article I thought people would find interesting. Because that's what I do. I'm just a little joke monkey, put here for your amusement.

And really? No one's upset about the pole thing?

Carry on.

Posted by: litelysalted at September 10, 2007 7:29 PM

Wow, Comish, aside from the objectionable photo of Bush, what part of that wasn't true? ... They have similar values, they just express them differently.

That's your defense? "Conservatives actually are like al Qaeda?"

Well, now I feel much better.

Look, I don't care about the photo of Bush. I think that picture is kind of funny. What's objectionable is suggesting that I (and others like me) are like the mass murderers, misogynists, and torturers that have killed thousands of Americans and (at least) hundreds of our troops.

Seriously, why is it so horrible to say Bush and Bin Laden have things in common?

Because the point isn't just to suggest that Bush and bin Laden have things in common. The point is to suggest that conservatives and al Quaeda are morally equal.

Ask yourself why it's so terrible for conservatives to "question the patriotism" of liberals, but it's ok for liberals to draw moral equivalence between conservatives and our enemy in a war.

Posted by: The Comish (sic) at September 10, 2007 7:36 PM

Don't want to be lumped with those conservatives? Then don't brand everyone who disagrees with you unpatriotic.

I never said nor implied that it does dishonor to the victims of 9/11 or our armed forced to criticize the government. Nor did I ever call anyone unpatriotic.

I've taken offense to being called unpatriotic and being told that I'm like the murderers of 9/11 and our armed forces.

So not only have you gotten my argument wrong, you've managed to flip it on its head. Congratulations. Not everyone is capable of such mental gymnastics.

do you really expect anyone to believe that you "actively seek out opposing political viewpoints"?

Why is it difficult to believe that someone would do that? I enjoy it. It may seem absurd to you that someone would actually want to be well-informed and not try to hide in an echo chamber, but I think it's pretty essential.

Posted by: The Comish (sic) at September 10, 2007 7:46 PM

Ugh, Sarah Silverman. That bitch can not die soon enough. And I really really mean that.
Her entire fucking "comedy" routine has followed this same unfunny script for years:
(nasally voice)... vagina... awkward pause... poop joke... awkward pause... racist joke... really awkward pause... cliched jewish joke to make the previous racism "OK", (cause, you know, she's JEWISH and all, so since her people have been persecuted too blah blah.) End with the words "vagina" or "pooping," or some variation thereof.
Also? Her voice and laugh make Fran Drescher sound like a goddamn lullabye.

Before this gets out of hand, I would just like to state that I was attempting to be neither helpful nor informative -- simply making a joke about an article I thought people would find interesting.

Fair enough. I still think it's in extremely poor taste, but maybe I'm being overly sensitive. How about if I just shut the hell up and bow out?

Posted by: The Comish (sic) at September 10, 2007 7:51 PM

Well Comish, for what it's worth, I think you oughtta stay. Keep us balanced and such. Hell, boy, ain't that your patriotic duty, keepin' us liberal heathens in line? ;)
Seriously though. You play nice, and I like you. Sit down and hang out a bit longer.

Posted by: isabelle at September 10, 2007 7:59 PM

Well, to be totally fair -- who doesn't love a good pratfall?

Posted by: litelysalted at September 10, 2007 8:07 PM

That always makes me laugh when someone huffily announces they're leaving, never to return and not more than five minutes goes by before they're posting again.

Hi Comish!

Posted by: Trilbynhiss at September 10, 2007 8:13 PM

Ok, so I caved and looked at the "opening act" of the VMAs. Ah, Ms. BS outdoes herself once again. It had all the painful look of somebody who missed far too many practices and ultimately didn't give a damn. If Kelly Clarkston's album tanked and had to cancel her tour, I can't imagine BS's album and tour going further than her porch.

I admit that at one point I had a semi crush on Sarah Silverman, but ultimately found out like others have mentioned that she's just not that great of a comedian. It's like the geeky cute girl who the geeks fawn over and yet she's not really that cute, nor geeky.

Posted by: mb at September 10, 2007 8:17 PM

isabelle-It's so good to hear that someone else finds Sarah Silverman completely unfunny. There's something very "Mean Girls" and high school about her humor that turns me off. She always aims for the easy and obvious targets in her jokes and relies way too much on scatological humor. And I agree, she uses her Jewishness to justify bigoted jokes towards other ethnicities.

lightlysalted- The funny thing to me about the pole article (and most of what I read on feministing) is how spun up the comment threads can get. It's quite hysterical how seriously some people take themselves. They all dash off angry responses to the subjects or writers of the original articles. Such self-righteousness amuses me.

The Comish- Don't leave. You do play nice, state your opinions well, and don't tell anyone to STFU. There's something to be said about courtesy and civility amongst anonymous strangers.

And of course, having said that, someone is going to crawl up my ass about criticizing these very serious women on feministing. Oh well.

Posted by: Alabamapink at September 10, 2007 8:21 PM

No criticism here Ms. Pink. I do like a lot of the subject matter that is discussed on Feministing, because I think it needs to be discussed, but the commentators read like a Women's Studies 101 class. I think it was uninformed for the author of that piece to generalize all current feminism as being slutty on a stripper pole, but it also disturbs me that many women really are equating shit like that with female empowerment. I've seen it for myself many times over, from women that I thought were otherwise pretty together.

Posted by: katy at September 10, 2007 8:57 PM

Sarah Silverman = NOT funny.

Not not not not not.

Posted by: Karen at September 10, 2007 10:26 PM

Comish can go get movie reviews from Fox News because they are so "fair and balanced".

Sorry, had to look at the Britney last night on the repeat. She looked like I did trying out for the middle school cheerleading squad without out properly knowing the routing first.

But Sara Silverman's humor/comedy (whatever) is all about making you feel uncomfortable. On that note, she scored. Now was it funny? Not very.

Posted by: wsapnin at September 10, 2007 11:25 PM

Yeah, Comish, please stay...even though I personally think you're a complete twat.

Posted by: Case at September 10, 2007 11:52 PM

Can someone please explain to me why we should care if Comish stays or goes? As long as litely salted and the rest of the Pajiba crew stay put, I'm happy.

Posted by: clarity at September 11, 2007 12:27 AM

I've never understood the appeal of Sarah Silverman. Her humour is the verbal equivalent of stepping in dog poop. It's only funny if you're 3, otherwise it's annoying. While I think celebrities should be mocked, I don't think their children deserve public ridicule. At least until they grow up and decide to make public nuisances of themselves just like their parents. As for her race jokes, while not offensive, they're still NOT funny. Why oh why do people practically fall over themselves over this woman?

Posted by: joker at September 11, 2007 7:18 AM

GOD. Will someone please make Sarah Silverman SHUT THE FUCK UP! She isn't funny. She was a long time ago. But GEEZ now she is just pathetically ridiculously unfunny. I want to shoot her in the head with a staple gun just to get her to shut up.

Posted by: cmoody at September 11, 2007 8:22 AM

Well, comish, I'll say this for you: it's good to see that conservatives as well as liberals can be over-reactive and humorless on certain subjects. I thought it was just the vegetarians and pseudo-feminists. Good to see everyone can be a Suzy Sensitive.

OK, mean jokes aside - you're going to exit forever based on one off-color joke? Come on, man. Be strong. Stick around. Otherwise it's just a bunch of Rilo-Kiley lovin' bleeding hearts who hold hands and sing about Wes Anderson movies, and that's gonna get boring in a hurry.

Posted by: TK at September 11, 2007 10:18 AM

The most important thing in comedy is TIMING, and Sarah Silverman has next to none. Just being shocking is not enough. Time to retire standup and get a job on a sitcom.

Posted by: OldSchool at September 11, 2007 10:42 AM

@katy, I love me some feministing.com even though my hubby often asks "what did the ladies tell you to be pissed off about today?" There was a recent thread about men engineers dressing like women to try to build better cars and when a few people got a bit overly sensitive about "stereotypical women with skirts and babies and fake nails!" a lot of other comments slammed them for being too sensitive.

@Comish: "our enemy in a war."
Oh if ONLY we remembered Bin Laden enough to have him be the enemy the war was targeting. I supposed you could be referring to the very generic GWOT, but the current war we're fighting has forgotten about Bin Laden.

That said, you can take whatever context you want in the article- aside from the pic it wasn't all that snarky, just factual. It's like pointing out that anti-choice people who blow up abortion clinics ain't exactly "pro life" or anything. Or how certain "moral" policies are amoral towards the people they are oppressing. That sort of thing.

Calling liberals unpatriotic, well, I haven't really heard a decent argument FOR that claim, just the knee jerk "if you're not for the war, you're against America" bullshit. If you have a link, post away my Conservative friend.

Posted by: lilianna28 at September 11, 2007 11:01 AM

Oooh political arguments in a Pajiba Love thread! my, my litely what have you done?

I have never seen Sarah Silverman in action and as I currently don't have access to a computer with sound it's doubtful that I ever will. Oh well. Not gonna comment on the whole Liberal/Conservative debate cause I'm British and every time I attempt politics my incredibly shallow brain decides it's going to take a nap for a while.

I will say that although I do enjoy Feministing as a site (it's part of my daily blog rounds) I do find the tone overly hysterical sometimes (and that's not even counting the comments sections) and often find myself saying something along the lines of "Of course it shouldn't be like that but unfortunately it is and those of us in the real world have no choice but to deal with it." Still makes for interesting reading though.

Also: I may be proof that merely the slightest hint of suggestion in advertising works as I now have a strong desire to order a personalised love song. Ugh, the ads are creeping me out.

Did Jimmy Kimmel pay comedy central to promote his skank homewrecking girlfriend Sara Silverman? She's only with Jimmy because he's famous and has a horse cock that can barely fill her stretched out holes! He fucks her ass day and night and sends the videos to adam carolla for stroke material. She has no talent at all. comedy central should stop screwing around and find hot girls to photograph instead of media-created pig whores.
