If “roadhead” can land you smack on the national sex offender registry, this has serious potential to cramp the next season of “The Simple Life.” (QuizLaw)

Seeing Steve Carell doing the creepy-sweaty-pervert-guy version of Bob Saget's job wounds me. It wounds me deeply.

I was going to ask this on the "Evan Almighty" thread, but that seems to have petered out, and here we are talking about Steve Carell again. So, I read somewhere that (a) Carell was contractually obligated to appear in a "sequel" to "Bruce Almighty" if they made it and (b) there were some threats of legal action relating to whether he was obligated to do this picture since it was somewhat far afield from the first movie.

I have no evidence to cite and cannot find anything to that effect on a quick google search, but I WANT to believe it because I want to believe Carell would not voluntarily do this latest bit. I will say, however, that he has a lot of goodwill capital built up, and if he felt the need to cash in while the opportunity was there, I don't blame him one bit. Man's got a family and all. Anyone know the skinny on this?

RE: Steve/Evan

I can totally buy that Steve HAD to do Evan (snicker), but Steve's not saying as much because he is truly a nice, gracious guy.

This is how I imagine it: before Bruce Almighty, Steve wasn't even on the map. No "Virgin", no "Office", no "Daily Show" guest spots. So, when a big studio says, let's do a sequel, most 40-something struggling actors would sign immediately. Then Carrey backs out, and Steve is stuck with a sequel to do. Suddenly, the Virgin premiers, Steve's hot, and the studio thinks, we can milk his newfound fame, which they totally do, much to our chagrin. If (a) and (b) were really the case Socalled, if he had fought the studio and lost, he would possibly damaged his career.

So, yeah, I mad that Evan sucked big wampum, but I'm even madder that Steve was (a) too short-sighted to say no and (b) too nice (scared?) to fight to get out of it.

And I have no concrete knowledge that thisis how things went down, but I do know it happens more often than not, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't be the case here.

Yeah, I can see him being too good-natured and too smart to get into a pissing match over the film. In for a penny, in for a pound, so he smiles and sells it.

Long-run, I really don't think this hurts him. As long as it does okay financially, even just okay, he'll get more chances, and those films will either suck or not suck. And like I said, I don't blame him at all even if it's a total cash-in. He labored in relative obscurity for a long time, more power to him.

The "roadhead" story practically screams Snopes -- over-age consensual sex does not land you on the sex offender registry. I'll be interested to see if Quizlaw finds any further evidence to back it up.
