Pajiba Love

Sydney Pollack remembered. (Film Experience)

Did everyone have a fun Memorial Day? I hope you all remembered to put on your sunscreen and not get arrested. (QuizLaw)

Like myself, I’m sure at least a few of you out there have a sick curiosity about E!’s new “Living Lohan.” And thankfully, Rich here can tell us all we need to know without ever having to actually tune in to this rancid horseshit. (FourFour)

Instead, tune into a truTV reality show we can be proud to watch, even though they changed their name from the made-me-feel-smarter “Court TV.” (WIMB)

Celine Dion just became Captain Planet’s most worthy adversary. On a related note, (and even though he’d probably be pissed at me for telling this story) Gordon Elliott once called a friend of mine “Captain Planet” because of his green hair. (IDLYITW)

Ooh, Zooey you so fine, you so fine you blow my mind! (Popoholic)

There is such a thing as losing gracefully. And then, there’s whatever the fuck this is that Hillary Clinton is doing. (Deus Ex Malcontent)

Q: What do Pete Doherty and the majority of Pajiba commenters have in common? A: Complete obsession with zombie apocalypse. (Agent Bedhead)

Warner Brothers is trying a new tactic to combat a decline in DVD sales: direct-to-DVD accompaniments to what’s playing in the theater. Yeah, because if Disney has taught us anything, it’s that direct-to-video/DVD sequels equal “quality gold.” Thanks, Brian! (NY Times)

Greatest hits such as, “Cat Accident,” “Not a Trashcan,” and “WTF?” (PA Notes)

I swore I wasn’t going to post one single more goddamn Indiana Jones related anything, but this is about the best I’ve seen so far, (and reason why you should totally be watching “The Soup” if you’re not already) after the jump.

So sad about Sydney Pollack. He was awesome.
I loved his acting in Tootsie, his was one of the best characters. (Bill Murray was the other one.)

I just watched Tootsie again on Friday night. How strange.

I will forever love Sydney Pollack for, at the very least, telling people to shut the fuck up on their cell phones in the movie theatre. "Oh, I'm sorry? Is my directing interrupting your phone call?"

What's funny is that Saturday night before the Kids show I was talking to my friend about women who are in movies and shows that I don't want to see, with Zooey being a main offender. About 30 minutes later Bruce disparagingly mentioned "Failure to Launch" and I leaned over and said "another Zooey movie".

In the singular case of "Watchmen", given the typical Alan Moore style of stories within stories, the accompanying dvd's sound like a really cool idea.

Sound, Dottie. SOUND.

We shall see.

Zooey Deschanel: God(topus)-DAMN, she looks good.

Sydney Pollack: As far as I can remember, I always did enjoy his work. It is sad that he is gone, but at least he was able to live a life few ever do. Still want to see Three Days of the Condor, might as well do it now.

It's really sad about Sidney Pollack. What I have seen of his work is really good (I haven't seen Random Hearts) so it's sad to lose him. Tootsie is one of those films I meant to see but it never happened. I'll have to make more of an effort.

Rest in peach Sidney Pollack. Out of Africa is to this day, my absolute favorite movie. Even if it has the completly overrated Robert Redford.

*peace* oops...

Ha, rest in peach...that's mildly amusing.

Posted by: Megan at May 27, 2008 4:56 PM

Hee Megan, resting in peach sounds delicious though.

I confess, I tried to watch Lohan. It's everything Rich said it was, but most of all, it was boring. I got more out of Denise Richards' show before I fell asleep. I seem to remember she was trying to get her pet pig laid, or something like that. I won't be re-visiting either show, except to see Joel tear them apart on "The Soup."

I'll catch up on Mr.Pollack's work on my summer Netflix list. Sad.

I don't want to know anything more about how Dina Lohan is raising her kids, something is not right with that woman.

Why would anyone buy DVDs with bluray as the new standard. That would be like buying VHS after DVDs were released. The only question is how long the transition at Netflix, Blockbuster etc. is going to take.

Posted by: OscarTamerz at May 27, 2008 8:17 PM

I will be buying DVDs for a while because I don't feel like spending a couple hundred dollars on a new player. I'll get a bluray player when they cost 40 bucks.

Posted by: the_wakeful at May 27, 2008 8:56 PM

Oscar, we're still a ways off from Bluray being the standard. In addition to that, the facts are that a) many movies aren't available on Bluray yet, and b) most bluray players are backwards compatible, c) Bluray discs cost $5-$10 more for new releases, and d) the players are still somewhat costly, it actually makes plenty of sense.

VHS made no sense because it became instantly obsolete. DVD will not only continue to still be playable, but still gives decent-to-very-good picture and sound.

Not me, if I can help it. Netflix does have them now, by the way. Blockbuster has an okay selection in the store to rent. The catalog stuff that's come out is kinda random, but not in a bad way. I went the PS3 route since there's a couple of games I really want coming out in the near future, and it's a good price for a Blu-ray player to begin with. With the decent LCD TV I got last week I was quite enthralled. I compared my "Curse of the Black Pearl" dvd to make sure I wasn't having placebo vision and was almost depressed that I wasn't. CRT's are forgiving of lower quality but can't rise up, whereas some stuff can look splotchy on an LCD if you don't tune it up really finely, and even then it's not perfect. When you give the newfangled TV's the good stuff it's scary good though.

Tom Baker Doctor Who dvd's look no better or worse, whereas the new ones show their limits. That sound is Tom laughing.

I don't want to start re-buying movies, at least not in any volume, but I'll be thrilled to get new stuff as it comes, as well as snapping up what Netflix has to offer.

Brad Bird said Disney wouldn't even tell him when "The Incredibles" will be released, but judging from how terrifyingly good "Ratatouille" looks I can't fucking wait.

(mind you, this isn't the norm, but I've got some money to throw around right now, including my federal kickback, and I'd rather get stuff I'd be buying later anyway when I'll have less to blow. Even then, I only spent a thousand for the TV and Playstation, less than I'd have feared last year. Along with the good deal I got on a new turntable last month all my toys are now in order)

Frakkin' zombie spambot!! Pete is right, they must be stopped.

RIP Sydney Pollack. Tootsie is still one of my favourite movies.

Blu-ray? I'm still watching my 8-year-old CRT. It's a big screen, and it works fine, so I can't justify junking it and switching to plasma or LCD (I have no idea which is better anyway). So blu-ray is a long way in my future. Besides, once I went there, I know I'd want to replace all my dvds as they came out, and that shit is expensive!

Hey, look at that. Mike Rowe appeared! I wouldn't know his name if not for you lot, so, you know....be jealous of me!

Posted by: Jay at May 28, 2008 7:04 AM

Hey, where did that zombie spambot go? Was the ganking effective after all? Or are TPTB deleting them, now?
