holy shit, that 300 review on IDLYITW received so many racist comments!! I'm so repulsed, I can't shut up about it. when did these rednecks learn how to type?? I have some really good friends that are Iranian and they are women who are a) unabused and b) NOT terrorists. just for the record.

I won't say that the office isn't strawberry scented and that we're not looking into scratch-n-sniff webpages, but I'm not all nice all the time. Just most of the time. Hugs!

dollvomit: Yes, while I usually enjoy the postsat IDLYITW, I pretty much ignore the commenters, since they are usually unrepentant assholes.

Live and learn.

As far as celeb blogs go, PopSugar is a relative breath of fresh air. So many of 'em (the celeb blogs) are just lame imitations of each other, snarking about the same tired themes over and over again. "Kiki Dunst is a snaggletooth who can't act. Katie Holmes is a prisoner in her own marriage. Tara Reid is a fat drunk. This bitch needs to gain weight, that bitch needs to lose weight, and won't those bitches over there do something about those gawdawful weaves? Dumb bitches."

Verbally sniping celebrities who DESERVE it can be loads of fun, don't get me wrong, but really, how many celeb blogs out there are really, truly good and original about it? Until one crosses my path, I'll stick with the relatively benign PopSugar, who gives us our weekly dose of Biel bikini pix without suggesting for the 1000th time that she's got man-arms and and ass that reaches back into last week.

In other words, where's the Pajiba of the celeblogosphere?

Posted by: Hank at March 14, 2007 11:05 PM

I am in total agreement with Hank. We need a Pajibaesque celeblog. And for the record, I love Biel's "ass that reaches back into last week." Such a sight is a wonderful thing.

Posted by: ScarletKnight at March 14, 2007 11:17 PM

I think I'll stick with celeb snarking blogs. Celeb ass kissing blogs like Popsugar are a dime a dozen.

The saddest thing is that most likely they are not rednecks they are probably well educated young males from my experience.

See the internet allows you to say shit without worrying about getting in any meaningful trouble over it so many (and I must admit I've done it myself) use this opportunity to say the vilest things about anyone and everyone.

Re the Pajiba of celeb blogs--for my money, the only one worth reading is Go Fug Yourself (if that even counts); girls can actually write satire--AND use a spell-checker, unlike IDLYITW and others. IDLYITW's Todd is IMO the only real wit on the board, but it's a hateful, issues-laden wit (that is, somehow more than most--hate and issues are normally part of the recipe!) and funny as I find it, it's exhausting after a while.

Plus, there's no comments section on Fug, which gives us all a break from the chatter. And they don't tend to focus on the truly miniscule, like who shaved their head when. Instead they take celebs as a group down on their overweaning materialism and herd mentality, which are two of my own hobby-horses, so I'm happy to ride along!

Posted by: ranylt at March 15, 2007 8:38 AM

Too true. Ranylt, I know you are married and all, but how do you feel about taking on a mistress? Sigh...

Posted by: AM at March 15, 2007 9:55 AM

ranylt, I'm sure it's a lot easier for GFY to be consistently funny since they post once a day on average. The other blogs churn out on average 5 posts a day. I'd like to see you try to be funny that many times a day, 5 days a week. You weren't even able do do it once here.

Posted by: anonymous critic at March 15, 2007 12:45 PM

GFY is indeed funny, and I thought of them immediately when someone asked for a Pajiba of the blogosphere. They definitely have actors and actresses that they admire (Intern George comes to mind), but that won't stop them from tearing apart that actor's clothes if she steps out with jeans under a dress. Or a shirt parading as a dress. Or spats.

And amen to Jessica Biel's ass! That girl is stacked and lovely to look at, unlike most of the emaciated celebrities out there who need a steak and fries pronto. I seriously have never seen her act, but I love her photos.

Posted by: zambonigirl at March 15, 2007 1:23 PM

Critical one:

For what it's worth, GFY uploads about 2-4 separate entries per weekday--much more after big gala events (usually all at once, yes--and there are two writers.) IDLYITW posts about 5 per weekday but has 3+ writers.

Re. other blogs? Quality over quantity isn't such a bad thing.

Posted by: ranylt at March 15, 2007 1:35 PM

I will say that Cord, the relatively new editor over at Mollygood (the previous home of the same Molly who is now at PopSugar), does a pretty good job of keeping the intelligence and humor level above par. He's snarky when called for, and more introspective than most of the bloggers out there, and he often throws in one or two "think pieces" a day in his round-ups. I may not always agree with everything he says, but I appreciate the way he runs his blog.

Posted by: Cheryl at March 15, 2007 1:47 PM

Dear Ranylt,

Todd and I are the only writers. I am also the only editor, webmaster, image editor and one of the moderators. None of Todd's posts are posted until I edit them and publish them. Todd and I also have regular, full-time jobs on top of this website.

Go Fug Yourself isn't our competition. They're a fashion site, not a gossip site, and they typically post less than we do. It's a great site, but we don't compete with it for content, traffic or advertising.

A someone mentioned previously, yes, it's very difficult to be "on" and funny every day, several times a day and finding new ways to call Lindsay Lohan a drunken slut, but we do our best.

I started my site back in July 2005, and have not taken a vacation from it since the day it launched. I work my ass off for it, I take pride in it and I've never swayed from its original formula. Yeah, we're mean, perhaps sometimes too mean, but writers tend to be very moody creatures.

I'm sorry, but I just can't write about clothes every day because I really don't give a flying fuck about designers and haute couture. I grew up poor, so I was lucky to get two shoes that matched. Thank God Punky Brewster made that mix and match shit fashionable. Too bad about the breast reduction, though.

Best,

Jenny

Hey Jenny

Thanks for the details/clarification--I thought Brandon or Brendon was still with you. My bad.

The question that was being posed was, Who is the Pajiba of celeb blogs? Film vs. fashion vs celebs--I think (?) what we're sniffing out is the satire that bonds everyone together. I still nominate GFY (again, like I said, if that even counts, because we're doing the apple/orange thing), reason being that some of their posts are fairly lengthy so they really get a chance to sink satirical teeth in, and get to a thematic pitch at times that carries the reader along.

You guys _should_ be proud of your site--I think it beats the hell out of many celeb gossip blogs out there.

BTW I'm with you re. designers and haute couture--I wouldn't want to write about it, either. In fact, it's my perfect loathing for that world that makes GFY so up my alley. But I do think GFY is about way more than that, culturally; they seem to weave all kinds of current celeb rumour/buzz in around their better commentaries, but I tend to read between lines, often when I shouldn't.

Now I have just broken my own quality over quantity rule. I do that a lot.

Posted by: ranylt at March 15, 2007 2:20 PM

Hey Ranylt,

The GFY ladies obviously embrace fashion and love it enough to follow it around and properly rip it apart, and - at times - write lengthy posts about why that material, design, cut, length, blah blah is fabulous. I don't think they "loathe" fashion as much as you might think.

Lastly, when you and others are comparing all these blogs, please keep in mind that several of the celebrity blogs out there are owned by larger media companies, LLCs, etc. The people who write for them are very often employees of said companies with no ownership interest whatsoever. Often times comparing them isn't "fair." And even more often times their content is restricted according to what pleases advertisers. Anyway, I'm floating far off topic at this point and I need to go make fun of people.

Smooches,

Jenny

Posted by: Jenny at March 15, 2007 2:44 PM

Jenny, surely I never said I thought the _Fug Girls_ loathed fashion? Any regular reader knows they live for it (they say as much, and I don't think they're being tongue-in-cheek); it's what they do with it all that allows us "fashion industry loathers" to really appreciate their take.

However inaccurate it may be to compare what the Bloggies call "entertainment" blogs as a group (GFY among them), both IDLYITW and GFY have long been bookmarked under my personal "take a break from writing dry unfunny professional shit" section, with appreciation.

Let me add my two cents:

A Socialite's Life is DAMNED FUNNY. J.Harvey and Lisa Timmons' writing in particular.

Now it's clear why I like IDLYITW so much. And thanks for not posting "news" from the National Enquirer, Star, or Globe. I hate blogs that do that! I'd like to at least think that all of the information might be somewhat true instead of not even reading it because I know it's crap.
