Could someone tell me if this was a good game? because I am French and it was my first Superbowl final here. I live in Chicago and so morally supported the "home team" but felt strangely underwhelmed by the action itself.

Posted by: sarasansh at February 4, 2007 11:48 PM

I thought it was a very boring game. Probably it was because of the rain, which put a cramp on the skill aspect, passing, etc. Also, there was not much back and forth excitement. The Colts actually pretty much dominated, and the Bears offense was pathetic, or the Colts defense was excellent, probably both.

Posted by: TEK at February 5, 2007 12:10 AM

you guys definitely should have done reviews of the commercials.

Posted by: katie at February 5, 2007 12:18 AM

Sarasanch, that underwhelmed feeling you experienced doesn't have anything to do with being unfamiliar with football. It's just a boring game.

Posted by: jbrader at February 5, 2007 12:40 AM

it was a good game, albeit a very sloppy one but that's to be expected from both the rain and the fact that during the super bowl they use a new ball on every play (to auction them off for charity later) so they're slicker to begin with.

i was rooting for the bears though, it was amazing when hester ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. rex grossman may have played his last game as a bear though after that performance, just dreadful.

Yeah, I was underwhelmed by this game. For me, the better game would have been to re-air the Patriots vs. Colts game that was two weeks ago. The weather, the needless turnovers, and the lack of fun commercials brought this game down. It sucks when you know a team is going to win before half time.

On a side note, I still cannot believe Dan Marino was on the panel. God, I'm not old, but it seems like only a few years ago that he retired. It was just very surreal.

Even though I'm not a football fan, I watched this out of sheer Chicagoan loyalty. But yeah, the game was boring as hell. The half-time show was particularly underwhelming. I like Prince, but his performance just left me feeling "Eh. It was ok." Even the commercials were nothing special. Although the Grand Theft Auto themed one was cool. But that was a highlight in an otherwise dull game.

Posted by: Brie at February 5, 2007 1:25 AM

it was an alright game.

goddamn, the bears' QB was probably the best player on the colts' team, he pretty much won the game for them.

the gta commercial was actually one i saw at the theater when i went to see smokin' aces last week...

Posted by: razh at February 5, 2007 2:50 AM

By the standards of the usual halftime shows, I thought Prince was great. A hell of a lot better than the manufactured pop stars of recent years, or the desiccated remains of the Rolling Stones.

Posted by: sansho1 at February 5, 2007 7:01 AM

I was just amazed that they let Prince do the whole thing, rather than the usual merry-go-round of "talent" they trot out. As for the game, sloppy, boring, sloppy, pathetic and, did I mention, sloppy?

Posted by: pinkcheese at February 5, 2007 9:54 AM

I'm not sure what everyone is talking about, it was a great game. Even though the Colts dominated there were so many turnovers it kept things interesting. The Colts proved they deserved to be there and like predictions Grossman fell apart. Not surprising but he's still basically a rookie so you got to cut him some slack. A LITTLE slack.

Posted by: Rob at February 5, 2007 10:22 AM

I thought the game was fairly boring, Rex Grossman played exactly the way I expected him to, the Colts defense took care of the rest. The Devon Hester kickoff return reminded me of Ted Ginn Jr's in the BCS Championship. Oh, and Rhodes should have been given the MVP.

I thought Prince kicked ass...

Posted by: Kolby at February 5, 2007 10:43 AM

It was a great game. Although, Addai and Rhodes should have been the co-MVPs. It was never a blowout and Chicago could have mounted (eh..eh) a comeback well into the 4th quarter.

Vineteri missed a field goal !!! and an extra point. Patriot fans had to be laughing their asses off. Drama.

The Colts aren't 'my team' but it's still awesome for them and Dungy--who seems like a genuinely good guy.

I'm going to freeze my ass off watching the parade and see how many crazy/delirious/ hung-over people pack into the Dome.

The public schools had to cancel classes today because there weren't enough bus drivers at work. I think they should use this tactic to get a raise.

the commercials were a bit underwhelming but i thought emerald nuts gave us an instant classic with the robert goulet commercial, its on emeraldnuts.com if you missed it

Posted by: the-ian at February 5, 2007 11:05 AM

Yep, instant classic.

Homophobic candy-bar ads, the Bears running a prevent defense all night, Grossman playing like a high school rookie, The Twilight Zone awarding of Manning the MVP, and Prince doing a Foo-Fighter song. Brilliant.

Posted by: C-Dog at February 5, 2007 12:11 PM

Yes, the ads. The only two I really enjoyed were the one with the dog and the Robert Goulet ad. The homophobic ad pissed me off to the point that I am not going to eat that particular candy bar ever again. I also found the xenophobic ad featuring the man from the TV show Sandra Bollock used to produce to be obnoxious ("Me no speak English"), and the mysogynistic overtones of a few of the beer ads were not surprising but were disappointing.

The pre-show entertainment seemed like a very bad dress rehearsal for the opening ceremonies for the Olympics circa 1984. But I did love Prince!

As for the game - Manning got MVP? Seriously? I think they could have replaced him with nearly any Division 1 college quarterback and gotten better results.

Posted by: Lollygagger at February 5, 2007 12:24 PM

Okay, now Lollygagger, are you talking about Peyton Manning or Rex Grossman? Because if I recall, Manning didn't get sacked only to fumble a snap (even though it WAS raining). I choose to believe that this MVP award is not necessarily for this game, but a (so far) absolutely incredible career. Although I do believe the award should have been split between Addai and Rhodes. They really won the game.

Posted by: bonnie at February 5, 2007 12:41 PM

Bonnie, I am talking about Manning. He wasn't horrible, I just think he was a non-factor in the Colts winning. Certainly not the most valuable player of the game. Just my opinion.

Posted by: Lollygagger at February 5, 2007 12:47 PM

Best commercials were the Careerbuilder ones. I'm wearing a 3-ring binder on my head in the office right now!

Posted by: Helcat at February 5, 2007 1:09 PM

This is probably the first Super Bowl I actually watched, seeing as I am from Chicago and wanted to support our team. Last time they were in a bowl I wasn't even born yet. The rain and everything after first quarter were drawbacks, but overall it wasa good game.

The homophobic commercial was upsetting, but I never liked Snickers anyway.

Posted by: lilmoomoo at February 5, 2007 1:24 PM

As a die-hard Bears fan, I was really dissapointed with how the defense played, not Grossman. He's been shaky all season, and the pressure of the superbowl would get to anyone. Manning played like shit the first 2 quarters; he just adjusted, whereas Grossman did not.

But the defense!!! Oh my god, could the Bears defense have played any worse? Seemed like Urlacher and Vasher were the only ones trying. And the offense needs to learn some defense skills. If you know your qb has a tendency to throw long when it isnt always appropriate, you've got to expect turnovers and learn to sack so a turnover doesnt turn into a fucking touchdown.

Damn Bears, I was looking forward to a new Superbowl shuffle.

Posted by: Amy at February 5, 2007 1:46 PM

Homophobic? Are you serious?

Homophobia is the fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.

Let's be clear. That wasn't about two guys who were afraid of homosexuals. It was about two guys who are afraid of kissing each other. That's not the same thing. It's a fine line, but can it really be classified as homophobia?

Put a different way, if it was a commercial featuring a gay man and a lesbian, with the same result, would we be calling it discriminatory? Let's not be too quick to use the homophobia label.

Posted by: TK at February 5, 2007 1:51 PM

I really enjoyed watching the game, mostly just because as a Packers fan very few football-related events can make me as happy as the Bears suffering.

And the Snickers commercial was homophobic because of the way it acted like two men accidentally kissing is the most disgusting thing possible. This was reinforced by the way everyone in the room I was watching the game in immediately freaked out like it was the most awful, disgusting thing ever.

Posted by: Joe at February 5, 2007 2:57 PM

Sorry, but that last line about how it would be just as discriminatory to use a gay man and a lesbian is a bunch of hooey.

In terms of sexual orientation, this is a heterosexually dominated society. Thus a heterosexual is not going to be affected as much by a commercial poking fun of heterosexuals as a homosexual will be affected by a commercial making fun of homosexuals. Heterosexuals are rarely made fun of or discriminated against by the larger society; homosexuals are made fun of or discriminated against all the time. Get it?

Personally, I see the commercial as making fun of heterosexuals - 2 doofus men freak out about kissing each other (big deal) and thus have to act "manly"(which really just entails behaving like idiots) in order to feel better about thtemselves. But the argument used above regarding "reverse discrimination" is just a ridiculous one to me.

Posted by: boobaloob at February 5, 2007 2:58 PM

Love the Colts!!!!! I am so freakin' happy I can't stand it!!! We have had such crappy seasons and to finally be vindicated. Yeah, it wasn't a real exciting game, but dammit, in the end, all that matters is that WE FINALLY WON!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, small-town Hoosiers don't have much to get excited about, so for us, this is HUGE!!!!!!

Posted by: dammitjanet at February 5, 2007 2:58 PM

Lollygagger, just thought you would want to know that you are a bit mistaken about that Bud Light commercial.

Carlos Mencia was the asshole in the commercial, and quite an unfunny douchebag outside of the commercial.

George Lopez is the guy from "George Lopez Show", which is the show that Sandra Bullock produces, and a completely different person.

Posted by: Vermillion at February 5, 2007 5:28 PM

boobaloob, I think you're right. I may have used a poor example, and upon further reflection, you phrased it much better. Needless to say, I stand by my "Let's not be too quick to use the homophobia label". And I don't think I was citing "reverse discrimination", though I can see how my post could be interpreted that way.

When I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
