Justin Timberlake Makes A Big Mistake. Huge.

My dear Pajibans, as you’ve no doubt heard by now, Japan was hit with a massive earthquake, the 5th most powerful ever recorded. As Japan starts the road to recovery and other countries are on the lookout for tsunamis (so far no major damage), CNET has a fairly comprehensive list of links you can follow to keep informed. I’d like to extend my thoughts to any of our readers currently in Japan or with friends and loved ones there. (CNET)

Also in dire straits are the good people of Michigan. Oh, unless you’re the governor or any of a number of giant corporations. It’s a good day for you guys. (Forbes)

The people of Boston, on the other hand, are doing pretty well because even their car wrecks are gorgeous. (Boston)

That’s right. That website is just called “Boston.” I won’t lie, my dears, I was tempted to Bostonroll you. (Youtube)

Speaking of, did you know that the good lads and ladies (mostly lads) of 4chan invented “rickrolling?” They’ve also been responsible for a lot of other, more lasting changes in our society. (Rickrolling will go away eventually, right?) This interview with 4chan founder Chris Poole explores 4chan, its offshoot “Anonymous” and some of the ways in which internet culture is changing the world. One tip to Poole, however, I wouldn’t be so derisive with the term “neckbeard” when I’m fairly certain that describes much of your site’s population. (Vanity Fair)

One of my favorite things about internet culture, my darling Krakens and Cthulhus, is how easily someone’s painstakingly niche work can be distributed to an audience that will appreciate it. Take, for instance, this elaborate map of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre. This sketch represents hours, maybe weeks of work and I’ll admit I haven’t even gotten through half of it. It’s simply astonishing. (Sci Maps)

Speaking of Cthulhus, the geeks, the neckbeards and I were all crushed this past week to hear that Guillermo Del Toro would not be making an “At The Mountains of Madness” film. News In Film has a look at Pacific Rim, the movie Del Toro will be making instead. (News In Film)

Okay, he ain’t no Cthulhu, but the “Lost” Smoke Monster and all his wacky island hijinks can be yours on Blu-ray for 40% off. Man, I really hate these box sets that come with so many extra things. What care I for toys, when there are Sayid’s luscious man locks to play with? (Amazon)

Speaking of luscious, dust off those adolescent dreams, boys and girls, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake are back on the market. (Celebitchy)

I have to admit, I like J. Tim immensely, but when it comes to musician types, The Strokes Julian Casablancas really rings my bell. Here’s The Strokes’ new video complete with candelabras, chandeliers and Casablancas sporting his tightest pants and Helena Bonham Carter hair. (The Curious Brain)

In wholly unsurprising (but what an excellent way to justify my vices) news, ladies who drink two glasses of wine a day are more sexually satisfied than those who don’t. Bust out the Pinot for your lady tonight, fellers, ifffyouknowwhatImean. (NY Daily News)

My dear Dalis and precious Picassos, I want to share this odd collection of film-inspired paintings with you. Some of them, like the portait of Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, are fantastic. Others, like the Toy Story 3 one, give me the creeping heebie jeebies. I posted my favorite (Sam Jackson in Jackie Brown) below. (The Chive)

Thumbnail image for Jackie Brown.jpeg

But then again, what isn’t made better by Sam Jackson? Here he is making both science and golf look cool without dropping a single “m*therf*cker.”

And, finally, here are the highlights of the recent Paley Center event with the cast of “Parks and Recreations.” Amy Poehler is charming, as per usual. Adam Scott is, predictably, cute. But the sight of Ron Swanson with a full beard made me audibly “BWUAH??!?”

Joanna Robinson doesn’t get to work with Megan Mullally’s breasts (alas) but she does get to go eat a sandwich (yay!). Email your favorite sandwich combo here: godtopuswept@gmail.com or tweet/twit/twoth it @quityourJRob.

Justin Timbergay hates it when the girl in the relationship has the bigger dick.

Amy Poehler seems optimistic about Parks & Rec continuing (based on that clip.) Yaaaay! I feel like the internet is evenly divided on whether it's staying or going. I can't take the not knowing. I need Ron Swanson in my life. NEED.

Posted by: The Wandering Parakeet at March 11, 2011 1:23 PM

I hate to say it but Timberlake has a better chance of landing someone better than Biel.

Posted by: Fredo at March 11, 2011 1:29 PM

ADAM SCOTT! I miss you and your hedgehogginess. YAY. And eeeeeeeee they're gonna be all lovey dovey on the show because they are MEANT TO BE.

Oy, I turn into such a teenager when a cute boy comes around.

That video was delightful. Thanks, JoJo!

Christ, the shit that politicians have been up to these past few weeks is a joke right? I mean, between Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri ( http://www.inthesetimes.com/working/entry/7002/missouri_legislator_wants_to_increase_child_labor/ )it sounds like a prequel to a George Orwell story.

Posted by: Paultera at March 11, 2011 1:33 PM

Who doesn't want "More Than A Feeling"?

No one I wanna know, that's who.

Posted by: Jay at March 11, 2011 1:34 PM

BTW, Del Toro has been jumping from project to project since Hellboy 2 -- first The Hobbit then At the Mountains of Madness and now Pacific Rim.

Odds that what ends up happening is he leaves Pacific Rim when the money comes in for Hellboy 3: Apocalypse?

Posted by: Fredo at March 11, 2011 1:34 PM

They're desperate for a way out of the mess we're in (and that they and their predecesors willingly kicked the can down the street to avoid dealing with).

There's no solution at this point without pain. But everyone seems to want the pain to fall on someone else.

Posted by: Fredo at March 11, 2011 1:37 PM

I have only a limited amount of sympathy for Wisconsin and Michigan. It's not like these pricks seized power in a bloody coup. They were voted in by a majority of the electorate, in part because Democrats got their panties in a bunch because Obama didn't come into office with a unicorn and magical jelly beans to make everything better and sat out the election. That Tea Baggers are delusional assholes really shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. Like Mencken said, Democracy means people get the government they deserve and they deserve to get it good and hard.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at March 11, 2011 1:46 PM

@Fredo: I don't think that Del Toro is just abandoning projects willy-nilly. Hobbit was supposed to be a 2 year shoot, which started to look more like 4 or even 6. I think he was expected to relocate to New Zealand for the shoot, and it meant he wouldn't be able to work on anything else - asking the man to give up half a decade while he's in his prime is a lot to ask for, even if the movie will eventually be a blockbuster.

He's been trying to get At The Mountains of Madness made for something like 15 years, but no studio would back him. Even James Cameron jumping in to support it doesn't seem to be enough to get the other pieces and players to fall in place.

Guillermo in the meantime is continuing to pay his dues, since I think he's still attached to Disney's Haunted Mansion (because if you can turn one theme park attraction into a trillion dollar franchise, how hard can the others be?)

Posted by: Markus at March 11, 2011 2:08 PM

My most heartfelt sympathy goes to the people of Japan and all who have been affected by this earthquake and tsunami. Absolutely devastating. I have been on the verge of tears all day as I have been watching this unfold on the various news sites. I hope they get the help they need on all levels to get through this tragedy.

Posted by: Jadine at March 11, 2011 2:17 PM

While I don't care for Timberlake I do respect the fact he nailed Kunis, Seyfried, and Munn while dating her.

Well.... not so much Olivia Munn.

Posted by: the EPA at March 11, 2011 2:18 PM

I forgot to mention I find it funny that Japan, the biggest rapers of the ocean, got hit by a tsunami.

I'd queue the gong but it's underwater (too soon?).

Posted by: the EPA at March 11, 2011 2:20 PM

Markus, and I don't think he's hopscotching from project to project on a whim. I do think that, at some point, he has to stop fantasizing about what he wants to do and get to making something (anything). If it's Haunted Mansion, then fine. Make that and make it the most awesome movie possible.

You get the clout to do what you will from delivering hits. By staying mired in development hell, Del Toro is getting further and further away from his biggest hit so far and getting left behind.

Posted by: Fredo at March 11, 2011 2:22 PM

Justin Timberlake Makes A Big Mistake. Huge.

If Timberlake were 100% penis. It's only a matter of time before Biel's unpersonality leaks through and things get very boring.

So the Strokes still suck. No surprise there.

Posted by: FabMax at March 11, 2011 2:36 PM

Between Pan's Labrynth and the Hellboy films, I'd think he'd have at least a little pull by now (unless those made far less money than I thought they did.)

Posted by: Markus at March 11, 2011 2:36 PM

I’m not surprised that Biel and Timberlake aren’t together anymore, just as well, that punk bitch probably wasn’t hittin’ that pussy right anyway.

I’m a union guy, but these fucking people in Wisconsin and Michigan, Ohio and Florida deserve whatever the fuck they get. These fucking stupid ass democrats that listened to Ed Schultz, and that Huffingtonpost bitch that told them to stay home in November in order to teach Obama a lesson should feel real good right about now. I never understood why if you’re a working class slob why would you vote republican, I guess so that the democrats don’t come and take your guns away. Maybe those guns you got can keep you warm when the republicans rain down their apocalyptic winter on your ass. I’m sure President Obama is sitting up in the white house laughing at those stupid fucking democrats that voted republican.

P.S. if I’ve offended anyone, I really don’t give a fuck. You’re getting everything you deserve, you dumb fuck.

Posted by: Pookie at March 11, 2011 2:36 PM

@ Fredo,

Unfortunately you seem to be missing the point that the pain being brought upon is directed at the people who it will hurt the most instead of those like corporations and the wealthy who can take it.

Posted by: Alex at March 11, 2011 2:37 PM

I'd queue the gong but it's underwater (too soon?).

Posted by: the EPA at March 11, 2011 2:20 PM

Yeah, I'd say it's a little too soon to be laughing at all the people who have lost their lives and the families that are mourning them.

Idiot.

Posted by: Jadine at March 11, 2011 2:40 PM

I'd like to officially nominate Pookie for Eloquent of the Day.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at March 11, 2011 2:42 PM

Alex, I didn't miss that. However, you make the presumption that those corporations and wealthy people can take it. So give them the burden and spare the poor folk.

At this point, I think everyone is going to suffer -- rich and poor alike. Can the wealthy bear the brunt better? Without a doubt.

This is the economic version of Captain Tripps (the superflu from "The Stand"). We will all contract it. There's no avoiding it.

Posted by: schmerpes at March 11, 2011 5:05 PM

In all fairness, the Republicans would never attempt to pass the legislation they are now unless their states were on the brink. Desperation is allowing them to get away with this bullshit. When people in Michigan voted for the "tough nerd", they never expected he would grant himself the ability to abolish any government or contract he sees fit. So to say the people of Wisconsin and Michigan deserve whatever comes to them is just wrong.

I agree, for the most part (though I think what the governor of Michigan is attempting will not pass legal muster). I certainly think what many of these idiots (Republican politicians) are doing is colossally assholish, but these are the winners of the elections many people couldn't be bothered to vote in. It's not all about the president. He doesn't run the entire country. The various little city councils and school boards and county boards of various kinds and state legislatures run the country. If you don't bother to vote in those elections, those people get elected by the hard-core zealots, which in many states, are Republicans. Jesus-loving Republicans who hate unions and abortion and birth control and boobies on TV and R-rated movies.

Another thing: There is a solution to the economic messes in the various states.

It's not popular, but it's the only way to erase a deficit.

Ready? Drum roll, please ...

Raise taxes on the upper income bracket.

Yeah. Simple as that. The top 20 percent should pay more, along with corporations (like Bank of America, which pays bupkis). I wouldn't raise it so very high; just what Lyndon Johnson pegged it at ... 55.6%.

Simple.

Oh, and I'd also scrap the salary tax cap so people who make more than $106,000 can pay into Social Security like the rest of us.
