Christmas Is Not Overrated

If there’s one word I hate more than “LOL,” (added to the Pajiba spam filter this week) it’s “Overrated,” a word that never fails to get under my skin, and that suggests that you’re an idiot for enjoying something one considers “overrated.” It’s a troll word designed to end conversation. So, here’s the 10 most overrated movies of 2010, or ten movies David Ehrlich (who I like) wants you to feel stupid for enjoying (I enjoyed 9/10 and consider them all appropriately rated). (Cinematical)

The House of Representatives, led by the Republicans, killed a bill six years in the making, aimed at preventing children — ten year old girls, for instance — from being forced to marry older men, a bill that passed in the Senate 100-0. Why? Nonsensical “Pro-life” concerns. (RH Reality Check via @davechensky)

Five Classic Christmas episodes you can watch right now, including a “Wonder Years” X-mas episode that must be watched right now. Go ahead. I’ll wait. (Movieline)

Fun Fact: James Earl Jones only received $7,000 for doing the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars, which he revealed on Jimmy Fallon this week. (Vulture)

As much as I detest these kinds of posts, I’m linking it for you, folks. For you. Here are 75 cats who really love Christmas. (BWE)

Nothing says Christmas like this delightful little .gif featuring Ben Stiller poking Robert DeNiro’s boner. It’s the gift that keeps on giving as long as you continue to watch. (FilmDrunk)

Anyone watch the NFL on the NFL Network on Thursday nights? Terrible broadcast team. Terrible. Here are some ways to improve it. (Ugly Fours)

Dan’s list of top five television episodes of the year shares much in common with our own. (Houston Chronicle)

Yet, another great online comic strip. (Digital Pimp)

Here’s a guide to the most disturbing Christmas television classics, which basically includes all your favorites. (TWoP)

I guess The Lost Symbol script is not shaping up so well, so Dan Brown — who is responsible for the awful Da Vinci books — has come in to rewrite the script. Makes sense. (NewsinFilm)

“Doctor Who’s” Matt Smith and Karen Gillan sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and it’s goddamn brilliant. Plus, Rory! Merry Christmas, everyone. Honestly, sincerely, truthfully.

All I saw of them was "Toy Story 3", and I still think it's great.

Also: Rory!

Jeez. I can't even agree with the overrates list when I didn't like the film. Really? The biggest issue in Splice was flat characters? Not the boneheaded climax that threw away everything that made the prior 70 or so minutes compelling? Not the shift from a professional camera crew to a teenager recreating The Blair With Project with a Flip cam? I guess what I'm saying is that someone is being a contrarian just to be a contrarian and coming up with ridiculous explanations for nitpicky complaints about films.

Toy Story 3 did make me cry. But what I really liked about it was the creepy daycare toys. That doll with the clap-trap eyelids made my skin crawl. She was way worse than Michael or Freddy.

Re: Scientific Theories and Santa-- I was told Santa travels by tesseract. The reindeer are for show.

I will admit that I’m not the most cultured and traveled person in the world, I mean I did barely finish college and I have traveled to places that required that I have a passport. I’m sorry but to me Ricky Gervais is so not funny, he is so overrated. In my opinion the funniest thing to ever come out of the home of the bad teeth is Benny Hill.

RORY!

Posted by: Kazza at December 24, 2010 2:26 PM

So good to see Parks and Rec get another "Best Of" mention. I thought the season was almost perfect, so it's hard for me to pick out one as the best of the bunch. The Telethon was great for Tom singing that "Get My Swag On" song alone, but it's not my fav of the year. When did Ron and Tammy air?

Posted by: Turtle at December 24, 2010 3:43 PM

It’s the gift that keeps on giving as long as you continue to watch.

More like the gif that keeps on giving, amirite? Ugh.

Hey, what the hell happened to yesterday's Pajiba Love? People were fighting in the comments!

Posted by: pissant at December 24, 2010 4:34 PM

Yaaay, puns!

I wont be around for the next two months, which bums me out. So to all in Pajiba-land: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May your page views be numerous, and your comments be bright. And when the trolls come a'trollin, set those assholes alight.

Stay frosty.

How can Shutter Island be overrated if it's rating wasn't even that high?? And really...the "predictable" plot twist is what makes the movie bad? ITS FREAKIN 2011. Get over plot twists. It has to do with the experience of losing your damn mind. And it did a good job of it.

That being said. Something tells me 127 Hours is probably overrated...but I have to see it first.

Posted by: Littlejon2001 at December 24, 2010 11:32 PM

It saddens me that no one mentions the child-marriage legislation that the Repugs blocked that you posted and would instead focus on Gervais's teeth, etc...

kidtiger, be the change you want to see in the world.

I've always wished that the voice of Darth Vader had been done by either Mark Levin or Gilbert Gottfried.

"Keep Christ in Christmas!" is a familiar refrain of Christians who fear the secularization of the holy day celebrating the birth of Jesus, their savior.

I haven't even watched Doctor who yet (YET) and this is the most charming thing I've seen this Christmas.

Who cares if eight-year old girls in foreign countries are forced to get married to disgusting old men, bound into sexual slavery? It doesn't happen in America. American's are so much more civilized that those dirty people. Here we have to make sure that none of those left-wing crazypants don't get any funny ideas about killing babies. Not sure which ones - but the liberal media elite is always killing babies somehwere.

I am indignant and scandalized! But ultimately I don't care. Any leftover pie in the fridge?

Yes, the same people who gladly incorporate all kinds of traditions from many long forgotten holidays/festivals to create their sacred Christmas.

My favorite is when people think Xmas is "taking Christ out of Christmas". They act like it's some new thing (I think even I'm starting to believe they're being persecuted). That abbreviation has been around for at least one hundred years. And it is not an 'x', it is the Greek letter chi which has long been an abbreviation for Christ.

Netflix is the best thing to hit movies since blockbuster in 1985. I use netflix to stream movies on my TV and it works fantastically without any hiccups in SD.

I as well as my guys were actually digesting the good techniques from your web page and then unexpectedly got a terrible feeling I never thanked the blog owner for them. These boys came so passionate to learn all of them and already have honestly been loving those things. Appreciate your turning out to be indeed considerate and then for using this form of brilliant information millions of individuals are really eager to learn about. Our own sincere regret for not saying thanks to you sooner.

Why not solve the problem at the source where it is concentrated? That is what stack scrubbers do. The majority of the smog in cities is due to traffic. Now we just need to come up with a better solution to that problem (portable clean energy).
