Celebrate The Mars Landing With A Dumb Natalie Portman "Heavenly Body" Joke

By Joanna Robinson | Pajiba Love | August 6, 2012 | Comments ()

We interrupt our Summer Olympics "hoorah" fervor to bring you some good old fashioned space nerdery. In case your head has been in a hole, allow me to report that NASA successfully landed the space craft Curiosity on Mars yesterday. Yeah, Science B*tch!! You know what's kind of rad? Dave Chapelle totally saw this coming. Anyway, my favorite part of this whole endeavor is watching the NASA nerds who made all of this possible celebrate the landing. If you haven't seen it yet, and can watch video at work, skip ahead to 2:30 for the Full Nerd Flail. (YouTube)

Alright, back to the Olympics. Check out this nifty little NYT feature where you can see every 100 Meter Dash medalist in history virtually compete against each other. YEAH SCIENCE, B*TCH. (NYT)

I cannot begin to count how many of you sent me the link to this model Serenity made of legos. Yes, okay, you get me. You people really get me. Check out the model, folks. It's 7 ft long. (io9)

Have you all seen the Xiying Rainbow Bridge in Taiwan? It's glorious at night. (Colossal)

In a Think Piece written *right* after author Maeve Binchy's death, a Telegraph writer implies the RECENTLY DECEASED woman would have been a better author if she had been a mother. Allow me to imply that this reporter can kiss my *ss. (Telegraph)

Speaking of lady journos, check out this brutally honest piece from a former Post reporter and inspiration for the Evil Hope Davis character on Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom" is a fascinating read. I felt dirty and cleansed at the same time. (XO Jane) And, if you're a Sorkin apologist like me, you might enjoy this rare instance of humility and self-awareness from the man. (WG)

For you "Breaking Bad" fans, our friend Josh Kurp has assembled a soundtrack of all the songs played during the show's lengthy "cook" scenes. It's an eclectic jam. Get your meth on. (Uproxx)

Check out this fantastic collection of the best Tumblr pics from 1991. It was a Bieber-free world, y'all. (HyperVocal)

Natalie Portman shot a new ad campaign for Dior and though I'm sure they dipped her in a vat of Photoshop, she looks gorgeous. (Celebitchy)

One of my all-time favorite comics, Tig Notaro, is having a CRAP year. If you're a fan, or curious to see someone handle some truly sh*tty life events with aplomb, check out this account of her recent set. (Flame Like Me)

And, tissues ready, Buzzfeed took their already gut-wrenchy list of Emotional Photos, set it to music and gave it a contemplative voice-over. Damnit. Where did all this dust come from?

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

Woo-hoo Curiosity! There are already Tumblrs sprouting up dedicated to the various mission scientists, especially Bobak Ferdowski (aka Mohawk Guy). Can't say the same for most Olympians.

  • I normally think slideshows are way too slow, but this one is way too fast.
If you're going to show 'great photographs' (with captions!) then how about giving us time to read the captions and LOOK at the photographs?
This to me smacks of an attempt by a marketing team to create a viral video... sorry, I won't share it.

Joanna, in tribute to my avatar, I offer this:

  • SabrinaHatesDisqus

I'm not trying to be vain, but I'm pretty sure my obsessive re-rewatching of Veronica Mars over the past few weeks is solely responsible for the Mars landing.

  • Woohooo! Class of '91, baby! Why yes, I am an old mofo as a matter of fact.

And that is one incredibly lucky chaise lounge. Just sayin'

RE pictures: OK, JFK Jr. saluting his father at the funeral and then the kid receiving the flag at his father's funeral have me all verklempt now. And then the veterans hugging ... gah ...

See, I do have a heart. It's probably still 3 sizes too small, but ...

  • Ley

I'd like to land my rover on her mountains.

    I'm sorry.

  • zeke_the_pig

    Please. Don't be.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    I loved that NYTimes infographic.

That piece on Maeve Binchy is pretty terrible. Aside from the fact that it involves pure and unnecessary supposition, some of the commenters note that Binchy was unable to have children, though she wanted to. However, thanks to one commenter, I have learned about Regender. Awesome.

The Sorkin post is just weird. It's interesting, but borders on incomprehensible to me. Confusing. And Sorkin bases much of his writing on real-life, as Chenoweth knows...

ps: Does anyone else think The Newsroom is racing through time too quickly?

  • Anne Lucchesi

That piece on Maeve Binchy blew my mind. I had no idea people still think that way in the 21st century. But it did redeem itself by turning me on to Regender, and the comments section may have restored my faith in humanity. I love that comments section like it was a Pajiba comments section.

  • Miss Laaw-yuhr

    Definitely, racing too quickly.

"though I’m sure they dipped her in a vat of Photoshop, she looks gorgeous. "

More like she's gorgeous despite the vat of Photoshop.

  • Nihmble

So therefore she has really dry, wrinkled, and arrow-prone heels?

  • Maguita NYC

Yeah, there was no kidding that you needed tissues for the Buzzfeed Emotional Photos.

I am grateful and thankful to have never lived through that level of desperation.

  • e jerry powell

The Mars landing has better American coverage than the Olympics. #NBCFail

  • David Sorenson

Indeed. Curiosity only had a seven minute delay.

  • John G.

Has anyone made that breaking bad cook-scene collection into a Spotify playlist?
