Ah, My Least Favorite Olivia, We Meet Again

Olivia-Munn-has-confessed.jpeg

Honestly, is there anyone you would rather have crash your party than Bill Murray? No, right? Me neither. This story is too righteous to be believed, but there is massive photographic evidence. I mean, this is right up there with Bill Murray showing up to pour your coffee. (The Chive)

The good folks in Australia (particularly Queensland) have been beset by massive flooding. Hey man, even sometime (not really) Pajibadversary, Kevin Smith, is lending a helping hand. If you have some spare sheckles to rub together, please consider helping out by clicking on the link and sending a donation their way. Melbourne reader TallulahBelle sent us this story and promises she’s safe and on dry land. (DOOOO EEEEEET)

I’m trying to work through my issues with Olivia Munn. I appreciate that she advocates nerd culture but I find myself not nearly as charmed with her as she appears to be with herself. But, kids, some of you dig her, and this link is delectably NSFW if, you know, you sort of squint your eyes a bit and cock your head to one side. (Celebitchy)

Hokay, I just wrote a rather detailed explanation of this link, but the science and the maths are not only slightly above my comfort level, but also make the link seem incredibly dry and boring. But, trust me, you should click and check out this elegant visual depiction of common three word phrases from Google’s book archive. This particular image reveals that “he” is often followed by “argues” and “she” is often followed by “loves.” Things that make you go “hmmmmmm?” (Chris Harrison)

Monsieur James Franco, charming actor, middling novelist and baffling soap star, is also a performance artist. Is this common knowledge? He and his partner, Kalup Linzy,
have a facebook page
, y’all, so you know it’s deadly serious. The real news is that they plan to perform at The Golden Globes this Sunday. If their performance is anywhere near as gobsmackingly weird as this video (wherein Kalup kills it and Franco musters the energy to fill out a tux and do a lackluster handjive) I’m in. I’m so in. (Monsters and Critics)

What to get the overlord and evil mastermind who has everything? His own tentacle-y throne, of course. D. Rowles, I’m shipping this to you, overnight delivery. (NOTCOT)

But is not Oasis the greatest British band since the Beatles? Can we not vote on this?! They are, alas, no longer, but Liam Gallagher’s “new” project, Beady Eye (it’s everyone from Oasis except Noel), certainly works the Beatles angle in this video. I dig the song, I really do, but I’m confounded as to why they appear to be performing in a frigid recording studio. (Gigwise)

So some scientist got sauced on the job and ended up making a somewhat (possibly?!?) significant discovery. Really? You’re allowed to party in the lab? That’s it, everyone, stand back, I’m going to try science. (io9)

Yesterday, during his speech in Tucson, President Obama said, “Make sure that we’re talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.” You know what heals, my kittens? This speech. So, when you have a half an hour to spare, crack it open like an aloe leaf and rub it all over your woundy soul. Warning, side affects may include a mad case of the weepies. (MSNBC)

I also find, when I’m feeling woundy, that nothing soothes the ravaged me like some heart-pluckin’ music. One of my favorite albums from the past few years was the soundtrack to the film Once. Because the film is now being made into a Broadway musical, I have an excuse to post this song like it’s not two years old and has been played eleventy-billion times. So we’ll have Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova plays us out today. Much love to you all.

Joanna Robinson didn’t mean to turn into such a bummer today. If you’re feeling glum, you can go check out Olivia Munn is her skivvies again. Let me know what you think of them skivvs here: godtopuswept@gmail.com

I don't get the Olivia Munn thing either. Every bit I've ever seen with her has reinforced the notion that she's not very talented and is harrrrible.

Her appearance last night on Letterman solidified it. She can't get her lines out even when she's being herself.

Posted by: thatstrangewoman at January 13, 2011 1:18 PM

Oasis broke up?!

Posted by: Lordninja at January 13, 2011 1:18 PM

Oasis broke up?!

Too bad they couldn't keep the better singer. WOOPS!

Posted by: D-Day at January 13, 2011 1:19 PM

Yeah, I don't care for that underwear. Just kinda looks like a weird, ugly belt.

Posted by: Jay at January 13, 2011 1:23 PM

I wish Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova were still a couple. *sadface

Posted by: Samantha at January 13, 2011 1:31 PM

People get worked up about the most ridiculous things. That? Really? REALLY?

I could understand if Maxim did a 180 and decided to put an glossy, photoshopped demonstration of "The Jackhammer" on their cover. You probably don't want 8 year old browsing through that. But if kids are old enough to ask questions about the Olivia Munn cover, then I don't think the image is going to sear their precious eyeballs permanently, nor is the answer going to turn them into PTSD'd couch humping sex fiends.

Posted by: Ian at January 13, 2011 1:35 PM

thanks olivia for your..."nerd culture support"...but we got this.

Posted by: zaika at January 13, 2011 1:38 PM

The Once musical just posted a casting notice that suggest the film is not going to be altered in any way on stage, except to give the dozens of Czech immigrant's in Girl's apartment names. I think this is going to fail in a most tragic way on a Broadway stage because the story isn't big enough for even the smallest theater, but damn if I won't be there during previews to see it live.

Posted by: Robert at January 13, 2011 1:41 PM

His speech really was something. I'm not a weeper, but even I felt a little misty-eyed and hopeful by the end of it. And this is coming from someone who has little-to-no faith in Americans and our political discourse.

Posted by: denesteak at January 13, 2011 1:42 PM

@Ian: You're forgetting the true horror for those 8 year olds. It isn't horrible that they see Olivia Munn in see-thru panties. It's horrible to know that they're parents have the poor taste to subscribe to Maxim magazine.

Parents, man up and order real porn. Your kids will thank you one day.

Posted by: bignick at January 13, 2011 1:45 PM

I LOVED the movie Once and while my dad was slipping away in April 2008, the soundtrack played on an endless loop in my car for the bittersweet week and a half while he let go. Most days, I can get through Falling Slowly without crying, except for take this sinking boat and point it home, we've still got time. I'm not made of stone.

Aaaand crying at my desk. At least this time it's for a valid reason and not the hot tears of mortification after being criticized on a call with 120 people listening. That was last Thursday. This Jeudi Weekly Weep Fest is not a trend I wish to start.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 13, 2011 1:46 PM

Booooo, Olivia Munn! Booooooo!

(This is what I yell at my TV every time she is on my screen. I am not going to stop until she finally takes her wooden face and terrible unfunny delivery and gets the hell out of my Daily Show!)

Posted by: Siege at January 13, 2011 1:52 PM

About the Maxim cover--the morons photoshopped her bellybutton right off, and nobody noticed?

Posted by: True_Blue at January 13, 2011 1:53 PM

I don't think that's even supposed to be Munn's pubic hair. It looks more like a shadow between her thigh and the pubic region.

Also, the people who don't know the definition of "pornography" frustrate me. Maxim was already porn, because the photos are clearly intended to arouse (male) sexual desire. Her being (arguably) slightly more naked than previous cover models doesn't change anything.

Posted by: Todd at January 13, 2011 2:00 PM

It might still be there, if you compare the two pictures. But still...Distractopanties. I was too busy furrowing my brow.

Posted by: Jay at January 13, 2011 2:01 PM

Hasn't anyone told NYC that karaoke is lame?

Posted by: litmus0001 at January 13, 2011 2:03 PM

She's attractive, but not that hot. Definitely got a bitchy-looking vibe.

And definitely way more into herself than the rest of the world should be.

Posted by: Larissa at January 13, 2011 2:05 PM

Too bad they couldn't keep the better singer. WOOPS!

You're kidding right? I mean, Noel is certainly the more talented song writer, but Liam, when he doesn't stay up until 5 a.m. drinking the night before a concert, by far has the better voice of the two.

Posted by: Lindsay at January 13, 2011 2:06 PM

Hasn't anyone told NYC that karaoke is lame?

Oh, it's you again.

Posted by: Jay at January 13, 2011 2:08 PM

Joanna -- Don't ever play any of your music ever again.

Question: Who LOVES a movie soundtrack?!? Answer: Someone who doesn't listen to music.

I wish I could un-hear that awful tune... What idiot signed these precious twee little pretenders?

Posted by: litmus0001 at January 13, 2011 2:18 PM

Clearly Olivia understands that no shave November is over.

Posted by: jp at January 13, 2011 2:18 PM

In a time-honoured tradition, Olivia Munn is making her play for the big time by wearing small panties. Just close your eyes everyone, it will be over soon.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 13, 2011 2:22 PM

All hail the greatest music expert/critic ever. For fuck sakes.

Posted by: Jadine at January 13, 2011 2:27 PM

Sorry Bees, I usually agree with you but as the intro to my John Peel tribute book puts it:

"Whenever anybody asked the big question as to which was the better band of the 1990s, Oasis or Blur, a Peel listener always knew the right answer: Pulp"

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 13, 2011 2:30 PM

Oh, Paddy, you know I agree which yous. That Oasis line is from an SNL skit with Will Ferrell which I totally would have linked if NBC didn't have it on lock down. Pulp forever.

Posted by: coveredinbees at January 13, 2011 2:36 PM

But is not Oasis the greatest British band since the Beatles?

The correct answer is Radiohead.

Posted by: ChristianH at January 13, 2011 2:38 PM

squint your eyes a bit and cock your head to one side

I wouldn't like to have to read that out loud in front of my family when drunk.

Posted by: Caspar at January 13, 2011 2:52 PM

Really? Watching that video made me wonder if Beady Eye had ever heard music that wasn't the Beatles. Nothing against the Beatles, but we don't really need a reincarnation.

Nope. No thank you. Henceforth, I shall be wary of following music links in Pajiba Love.

Posted by: JGirl at January 13, 2011 2:55 PM

As a heterosexual male who is not too fat to either see or use his penis, I find Olivia Munn attractive, charming, funny, intelligent and attractive.

I am starting an O.M. fan club, and I'm not gonna let no one in who's not on the list because this mess is gonna get raw like sushi. So haters to the left.

Also, True_Blue, though it is possible that the belly-button was photoshopped, I believe that it is just covered by her top there. Evidently, you don't frequent Southern California beaches where the bb is seen at the half-way point, not closer to the panty line.

Posted by: L.O.V.E. at January 13, 2011 3:02 PM

That "since the Beatles" line makes things screwy; the Stones were around at pretty much the same time as them, but their debut was (I think) a little later, so it's hard to say if they "count." There's no excuse for ignoring Queen, though. Their first album wasn't out until 1973, after the Beatles broke up.

Posted by: Todd at January 13, 2011 3:04 PM

Drunk scientists are the best scientists. Though we're not allowed to drink in the Chemistry building that I work in (there was an incident), I personally find that nothing clarifies Quantum like a few shots of whiskey.

Posted by: Zuzu at January 13, 2011 3:08 PM

Hey, remember when Pajiba Love was just a brief description of the links you were about to click? Now it's a vague statement ("Hey, here's something about that guy who was in that thing...I dunno, just look.") or it's an epic novel that never gets to the point ("Once upon a time, there was a man, and that man did a thing that altered history in every way imaginable...so I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time...").

Christ, bring back Feist! (Didn't mean for that to rhyme).

Posted by: Case at January 13, 2011 3:17 PM

I guess Liam forgot that everything that was good about Oasis was because of Noel.

Posted by: Figgy at January 13, 2011 3:21 PM

Andy Bell is actually pretty brilliant himself. Ride and Hurricane #1 being his pre-Oasis projects and both putting out some amazing/brilliant songs.

Posted by: Lindsay at January 13, 2011 3:30 PM

One moment whilst I remove my gauntlet.

::slaps Case::

Name your weapon.

Derision? Well played.

You, sir, are a sorry excuse for a meanie and I will thank you to keep your verbal whips and salt away from Ms. Robinson.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 13, 2011 3:31 PM

we're not allowed to drink in the Chemistry building that I work in (there was an incident)

Has there ever been a more amusing, intriguing, beguiling, mysterious, maddening turn of phrase than "There was an incident"?

Well played, sir or madam.

Posted by: MM at January 13, 2011 3:35 PM

Now you know I'm not one for coming down hard on Pajibans I disagree with...........oh, okay, I'm know exactly for that; nonetheless, anyone who even remotely threatens to remove Ms. Robinson from this job has me to deal with. She's head over heels better than Feist (sorry Jeremy but it's true: she's a better fit) and there's a lot more variety in the links since she hung her shingle up.

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 13, 2011 3:43 PM

And so say all of us!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien, Skipper and Kowalski at January 13, 2011 3:47 PM

What up, Case my man. I got a nice seat for you, right inbetween the dude who couldn't be bothered to ctrl-click the links and the guy who sails around the internet brandishing a TL;DR macro like a Javelin of Justice.

Posted by: Ice Cube at January 13, 2011 3:47 PM

Joanna is doing a fine job.
...and if you don't like reading too many words, go somewhere else.

Posted by: OldSchool60 at January 13, 2011 3:55 PM

...also, as much as I like AOTS, Olivia Munn always had that "I'm better than you." look on her face.

Glad she's gone.

Posted by: OldSchool60 at January 13, 2011 3:57 PM

Hey JoRo, what happened to the posts to cute animal videos or was that a Feist only thing? I like my Pajiba scathing, bitchy and adorably fluffy. :)

Posted by: Vee at January 13, 2011 4:14 PM

Someone might have already pointed this out to litmus0001, but Glen Hansard isn't a twee little pretender; he's been the main songwriter/vocalist/guitarist for The Frames since the early 90's. I can see how Irish indie folkrock might not be your thing, but the great thing about Once is that it features real musicians for parts that require musical ability.

Posted by: nosio at January 13, 2011 4:22 PM

I'm not really an Olivia Munn fan, but this Daily show segment about regulating puppy mills is one of my favorites this season:

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-november-11-2010/big-red-dogs

I think it's Cesar's WTF? look that does it for me.

Posted by: Vee at January 13, 2011 4:37 PM

But is not Oasis the greatest British band since the Beatles?
No.
No.
No.
They shifted units, yes. But then so does Michael Bay. Admittedly Noel wrote a few good tunes, but they were never much more than a Beatles tribute act.

There are many better options and the most notable of them have been listed above me in the comments section. But I'd put both Madness and The Beautiful South above Oasis too.
Easily.

Posted by: Simon at January 13, 2011 5:32 PM

Um, what's the possibly important scientific discovery? The link you provided is just trying to sell me a t-shirt.

(The link of note is always between the parenthesis. Tho other was jest for funsies.--JR)

Posted by: Slash at January 13, 2011 5:45 PM

OK, thanks...

Posted by: Slash at January 13, 2011 5:51 PM

Oasis shifted units? You don't have to love them, but they are far, far more than a "Beatles tribute band." You have brilliant musical minds working in that band! They are as close to the Michael Bays of music as Lindsay Lohan is to being a recovering drug user.

Posted by: Lindsay at January 13, 2011 6:04 PM

I, for one, think Pajiba Love has never been better. No offense to those who have done it before. I like that it's a mix of all sorts of interests (I'm still agog over the water statues yesterday and would never have found that artist otherwise) and great introductions. I'm not going to click on a link to a website I don't know unless I know what I'm clicking on. Joanna's descriptions make it feel safe to enjoy all the links without worrying that I'll be eye-raped by porn ads every third click.

So, in conclusion, thank you, Joanna. Don't let the bad crazies chase you away. Us good crazies are on your side.

Posted by: Robert at January 13, 2011 6:13 PM

I'm quite shocked that there haven't been more "incidents" where drunken scientists think "oh hey, let's alcohol in a nuclear bomb and see what happens!" and such. I spent a memorable summer at CERN and...it worries me that those people are creating mini black holes.

Posted by: Joker at January 13, 2011 6:38 PM

Zuzu, are you at UofM, or are incidents in Chemistry buildings just really common? (we used to drink there anyway, but we had to pretend we weren't)

Please help the flood victims in Queensland. The situation here is devastating, and the clean-up is going to be long and hard. The frightening fact is that the wet season is only just getting underway here...

Thank you.

Posted by: Banshee at January 13, 2011 8:54 PM

Drunk scientists> I remember my biochem lecturer telling me the protein-folding expert believed he did his best work drunk. Then there was the post-doc who had a distillery in his lab. Good times.

By the way, fellow Melbournian here and the Queensland floods are scary. I've linked to a video of a tugboat pushing a bit of broken walkway down the flooded river, away from the struts of one of Brisbane's main bridges. It looks kinda cute, like a kid's story. Until you realise that the water broke that walkway off, and it's made entirely of concrete, is between 150 and 400 metres long (450 and 1200 feet) and weighs about 300 tonne.

Best bit? Nobody sent that tugboat out, the skipper heard the walkway had come loose and basically said, 'That's a big bit of concrete, I better get down there and move the fucker before it tears the place apart.' So out he goes at 4am and steers it down the river away from the bridge, some chemical factories and a whole bunch of other stuff, no ropes, just kinda bumping that fucking great hunk of concrete and metal to a safer area.

I spent a memorable summer at CERN and...it worries me that those people are creating mini black holes.

Now that's a story I want to hear.

Joanna does an excellent job with Pajiba Love, but that picture of Oliva Munn almost kept me from reading it today.

The world is going to buggery

There are floods in Brazil, Sri Lanka and other parts of the world.

The QLD floods are distressing as it is only the beginning of the rainy season and there are forecasted hurricane/cyclones in the upcomming weeks. The rainy season lasts until March.

The reason why the floods are devistating is that 75% of QLD is underwater or wrecked, which to put it another way is an area the size of Texas is underwater.

Dont forget about QLD or any other countries that are experiencing horrendous weather patterns and if your able, please donate as the smallest donations help immensly

Posted by: caity at January 14, 2011 3:53 AM

You're a fan then Lindsay? I read your posts up there, but felt you were sitting on the fence slightly...

Seriously though, I will happily admit Noel wrote a few good tunes (Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger spring to mind), but you have to concede that they were never noted for their originality.

Even aside from the well-documented Beatles obsession, they were caught plagiarising Neil Innes, Stevie Wonder and the writers of I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing!

Posted by: Simon at January 14, 2011 4:41 AM

Simon, I can't fight you there. Although, with regards to the Beatles (who, of course, also plagiarized a bit, as have many musical artists) I believe much of that was more homage than theft. The Gallaghers haven't been mum about their Beatles obsession. I mean...just look at 'em!

And they've produced some brilliant stuff since the hits of Definitely, Maybe and What's The Story. 2008's Dig Out Your Soul was possibly one of their best albums yet.

Posted by: Lindsay at January 14, 2011 8:10 AM

Fair point Lindsay! I was probably a little harsh on them initially - I'll take a listen to Dig Out Your Soul and reassess.

Posted by: Simon at January 14, 2011 8:55 AM

dr. pisaster, I work in Portland, OR, but I imagine that chemists across the world secretly drink in their lab. It sure as hell makes running columns more interesting.
