Why Your Chick Is Cool

cool chick comment diversion.jpg

We all have a favorite chick in our lives — best friend, lover, wife, sister, partner, mother, aunt, grandmother. But what makes her cool? Is it her sense of humor, her homemade cooking, her willingness to be honest with you or just her boobs? Hopefully it’s more than her boobs. Since today is all about the women, think about the most important woman in your life, the one woman with whom you are closest. What are her three outstanding characteristics?

My favorite chick has been my best friend for about 16 years or so and she was my maid of honor. Somehow, I’m even closer to her than my sister; we just have a natural flow with each other. Her three outstanding characteristics are loyalty, a (shared) dark sense of humor, and empathy. We’ve been through a lot together, including weddings, the disintegration of her marriage, and unfortunate Nine Inch Nails Halloween costumes. These days she lives quite far from me, but we talk almost every week, and she understands me like no one else. I know that if ever I need her, she will be there (and vice versa).

Who is your favorite chick and what are her outstanding character traits?

My friend and I have been best friends since I was seven and she was five. We grew up two doors away from each other and we went to college together (I started, she joined me there) and we've remained friends through both of us getting married and breeding.
She isn't a loud, wow kind of a person...which I am. I'm the annoying, give me attention kind of girl. She's the kind of girl who will make you brownies when she knows you need them, or show up at your house with Mickey's forties (true story) when she knows you REALLY need 'em. She's the only bride I've ever seen do a keg stand in her wedding dress (I think that only happens when you get married at 23). She knows what you need before you do, and usually gives it to you.

I don't have just one:
I have a group of female friends who are all either social workers or nonprofit workers. We all chose to go into low-paying emotionally damaging work to make the world a better place. Each one is inspiring in their chosen field and just a joy to be around. They are foul-mouthed, afraid of children (even the moms), the seriously dark sense of humor that comes from seeing the worst of humanity and a healthy love of all things pop culture. We are the femilitia and proud of it. Now shut up and get me a dirty martini so we can talk about that hot cop that helped so and so with that protective order.

My favorite chicks would have to be my high school friends turned soccer teammates. I never really hung out with them when I was in college, but we've found each other again this year.

What makes them awesome? Their undying loyalty, awesome sense of humor, and willingness to accept our differences. Also, formerly repressed recovering Catholic girls make an art of partying.

My BFF and I have been friends for 16 years. We are pretty much joined at the hip. We finish each others sentences, and she shares my love of laughing at the misfortunes of others. And coffee.

The best thing about us though, is that it doesn't matter where we are in our lives, we always grow together and not apart. She's the only sibling I'll ever have or want, and I adore her.

Posted by: Smokin at November 18, 2009 2:13 PM

My favorite chick (if I only get to pick one) is my sister. She is the exact opposite of me and I lover her for it. She is sensitive, kind, and open. All the things I am not. I learn so much from her. Even if she is a hippie dippy tye-dye wearing chick she is the awesomest. Even if she write stories in her blog about shitting her pants, she is kind of my hero.

Posted by: Nimue at November 18, 2009 2:14 PM

I have several awesome ladies:

My mom (the original awesome). Seriously, this woman is just weirdness personified. But it all stems from the fact that she's not going to believe anybody when they tell her what to think. My mom follows the rules until she decides they're fucking stupid and pointless and then makes up her own (which are always better).

My girlfriend. She sings like a Muppet. She makes animal noises. She can always cheer me up. And we share this twisted, odd sense of humor. Every night when we go to bed we stay up later than we should because we're babbling at each other like it's a damn sleepover. We enjoy each other's company that much.

My friend Heather. I adore her so much. When we first met, we instantly clicked. We always have something to talk about and she is the one person that can completely change the way I speak after 15 minutes of exposure to her.

I don't have a best friend anymore, so I guess the women I admire most are my fellow 'Jibettes. I've never felt more comfortable around anyone, I can be myself and know that they are always themselves with me. We can talk about anything, and even if all I need is a word of encouragement to pick up a bad mood, I know they'll be there to help me no matter what. They make me laugh, and cry, and I love them dearly.

Plus, they're hot.

My mom is my favorite chick. In a country that is fiercely patriarchal, my mom managed to complete medical school at the top of her class and become one of the first female university professors in the country. She participated in anti-war protests in the 70s. She was the first female representative in LATIN AMERICA for the Panamerican Health Organization. She's now the Dean of Academic Affairs at the National University here and kicking all kinds of ass. She's met Fidel Castro and helped draft massive health reforms in Venezuela (she also met Hugo Chavez back when he wasn't insane) and has helped reform the University system here.

And she's done it all while raising 5 kids. And we all kick ass. She's the most badass woman I know.

Posted by: figgy at November 18, 2009 2:19 PM

She thinks it's exciting when I dress up like The Doctor for Halloween. Really exciting.

She likes my cooking and inspires me to play around with different things through hers.

Her personal style is like a wishlist I'd make.

I confuse her, but she gets me nonetheless.

She knows what she wants and what she doesn't--she knows who she is.

She'll watch superhero and space movies sharing a big bottle of wine with me, and enjoy it.

She's letting me take her to Walt Disney World for her birthday...so she can try it out without parents (fortunately one of her brothers already told her it was great).

Wait, three? I didn't read that part at first. Too bad.

My wife is cool because she puts up with my bullshit and occasionally grants me access to her holy of holies. Mostly because she puts up with my bullshit.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at November 18, 2009 2:20 PM

If I must pick just one - it's going to have to be the absolutely coolest mom of all time. Mine. Why?

She's an 'inspirer, not a nurturer', she is a genius writer, and the fiercest protector of the underdog you'll ever meet.

All I am and ever will be comes from her walking the walk.

Or booting around in the 'family' car ('86 Toyota MR2, red) as the case may be. And she STILL has a far hotter bod at 59 than I ever will. Hot damn, my momma can shake the world.

Kolby made me cry.

Posted by: Lainey at November 18, 2009 2:23 PM

Hopefully this isn't restricted to just the ladies.

My favorite chick is my wife. I never thought I would ever find someone I thought highly enough of to actually marry. She's fiercely independent, smart and smart-mouthed, fiesty and loving, and that's all in the same hour. She's the only person I've ever been comfortable with...and that includes even myself. I can tell her anything, and know that she's not judging me for it, but just listens and understands. And we share much more in common than most people ever realize, like life goals, attitudes and beliefs, and how we want our lives to progress. And considering how much of an arrogant ass I am, it's pretty intimidating sometimes how strong and amazing she is, and how much she loves me for who I am and accepts me.

On reading that over, it sounds a mite sappy. Please ignore.

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at November 18, 2009 2:23 PM

My spouse is amazing for a number of reasons:

1. She always listens and not just so she can say something back. She listens and offers advice out of friendship and genuine care and that's the main reason I asked her to marry me.

2. Her cooking rocks.

3. Her tendency to react to art work emotionally rather than intellectually (as I do) balances me out and opens up many a conversation after a film.

4. She works really hard and takes good care of me, financially and emotionally. I hope I can do the same for her in the former department sooner rather than later!

Posted by: Drew Morton at November 18, 2009 2:23 PM

My sister. She's incredibly funny, always does what she believes is right, and always gets my pop culture references. Always.

Posted by: kelsy at November 18, 2009 2:25 PM

This whole thing is making me weepy.

Posted by: figgy at November 18, 2009 2:26 PM

My wife has big juggs. And a great sense of humor, a drive like no other, an uncanny sense of right and wrong, and the ability to pick winners of reality shows during the first episode. And she's a great mom, incredibly forgiving and generous, and loves fantasy football. And she's a survivor. And she gave birth to my daughter, despite the fact that my enormous cranium was involved in some gene dominance. And she has big cans.

Posted by: Kballs at November 18, 2009 2:27 PM

Jay - you dress up like the Doctor on Halloween? That is The Sexiest Thing Ever.
Where have you been all my life?

My favorite chick (other than Jay's chick, who is clearly the luckiest woman alive) is my best friend. We bonded in high school when we both had mad crazy crushes on the same guy (he was taken). We share a penchant for cooking, an obsession with Harry Potter, a love for fine chocolate, and a slew of inside jokes.

Posted by: esme at November 18, 2009 2:27 PM

I'm with Kolby, the Jibettes rock my fucking world.

Seriously, ladies, I love the hell out of every one of you. I have had some of the most entertaining conversations and discussions EVER with you, and gotten some of the best advice. Having a space where anything goes and there's so much support and love and smarts . . . it's invaluable.

Now, let's get to working on that instant transporter/Stargate thing so we can have a drunken tropical weekend.

Posted by: myysharona (formerly Sharon) at November 18, 2009 2:29 PM

If there's gonna be a 'Jibette Weekend, I'm totally gonna stalk it. There's no way I would miss that for the world.

Posted by: Smokin at November 18, 2009 2:32 PM

My mom is so awesome that she defies definition. I will instead discuss the qualities of one of my best girlfriends in the world, Janene, who was my roommate both in college and for 2 1/2 years in Manayunk.

Janene is the most considerate and generous woman in the world. She will buy you a blood pressure cuff when she's worried about your hypertension. She will drive to downtown Philadelphia to pick you up when, after receiving devastating news, you are too distraught to take public transit home. She will spend 7 hours in the ER when you dislocate your knee, mock the blood on the floor of the waiting room, and sneak in chicken parm sandwiches when the doctor gets your x-rays. And she will, in the blink of an eye, perform her famous underwear dance when you are feeling blue.

Nene has the most infectious laugh in the history of the planet...laughing so hard that by the end she's shaking and dripping with tears. She has an arsenal of blonde jokes because she loves to laugh at herself. She has forced me to put on an old bridesmaid dress and drink beer while watching Wedding Crashers. She once convinced me to put egg in my hair to give it body, and then died laughing when I couldn't stand the stickiness any longer. She once made such filthy comments about the shape of my steak that I could no longer eat it. She has made me cackle with such intensity that I have sworn I've broken ribs.

Janene is virtually impossible to dislike. You can't do it. She's too good a person. My Nene is exuberance personified. And I am so lucky to have had her as one of my best friends for the past 11 years.

My Favorite Chick is my daughter Anastacia Luz DaSilva. She is a beautiful long curly haired Portuguese Blue Eyed Stunner who recently acquired her first scar running into a metal fence. Which makes her look tough and even more pretty.

As Will Sheff says, "And when that Queen's daughter came of age/Well I think she'd be Lovely and Stubborn and Brave."

Posted by: Stacy D at November 18, 2009 2:33 PM

Well, I've got my mom and my sisters, who rock my world, and get me and or special kind of family crazy, and are, all three, amazing women.

Then there's all these awesome Pajiba chicks, who make me say "awesome" probably more than any human being should (I mean, really, I need to learn some more words or something) but are, seriously, SO AWESOME that there is no other word for it.

But, I guess my favorite chick is my Christine, whom I adore for all of these reasons put together, PLUS she's an amazing, rockin', strong, independent woman who knows her own mind, which is also amazing. AND, she gets me, and she still talks to me even when we don't get to see each other or even talk for longish stretches, and still loves me. AND she still talks to me when I'm PMSing hard, and I am a BITCH sometimes. Seriously. By way of example, last night, pseudo Mr. vB was the greatest fake husband in the world, and this morning, I broke up with him in the shower. I think because the tub wasn't draining fast enough.

Anyway. She's everything a chick should be and more. Plus, drop. Dead. Gorgeous. I love her to death. It is my fervent hope that we grow up to be crazy old cat ladies together.

I'm giving a shoutout to three:

1) My mom. Seriously, she had a little period there where things went kind of pear-shaped, but for 29 out of 30 years, she's been the most amazing, strongest, most hardworking person I know. She raised two babies when my father walked out a month after my sister was born and worked three jobs. My mama has always been able to see through my bullshit and was never afraid to say "Nicole, I love you more than anything, but I don't like you very much right now." Thanks to her it never occurred to me that there was anything in life I couldn't do.

2) My sister. She's 20 months younger than me and acts five years older. She's bossy and sassy and crafty and smart. She's gorgeous and looks nothing like me. She can McGyver anything with a paperclip, a hot glue gun, and some string. (I seriously watched her make a pair of shoes for a wedding once.) Her sense of humor is incredibly dry and she's a master baker. She likes to kick back after her days working as an endoscopy tech with a Rolling Rock and her sewing machine. She paints walls and reupholsters furniture. She's 5'3" and drives her Land Rover Discovery like a maniac. Any time we spend together is either full of yelling or laughter; there is no in-between. She's the best friend I've got.

3) JulieServo. It's not just her tits. She's straight up amazing. Funny, intelligent, bawdy, supportive; she has the voice of phone sex operator and a heart the size of Texas. True story: My former-almost-father-in-law died in May 2008 and I somehow ended up smack in the middle of the preparations - my ex never told his dad we had called it off a few months prior. It was one of the most stressful, draining weeks of my life. At the end of it, Julie stayed on the phone with me for hours while I sat on the front steps in the dark, smoking my way through a pack of cigarettes and drinking my way through a fifth of Johnnie Walker Black. She'd never met me in person yet. Since then we've become our own version of Salt-N-Pepa (only white, with less grace and rhythm and more Bandaids). I feel that it's appropriate to recognize, here on Pajiba, on Paheeba Day, that this site gave me one of the best friends I have. Even if she is a dirty whore.

Can we combine that with MormonDressCon?

Posted by: Nicole at November 18, 2009 2:40 PM

My wife is wicked smart and loves to vent about stupid people, which is also a favorite hobby of mine. I love it when she gets all fired up.

She doesn't always follow my sense of humor, but she tries her damndest. She's becoming much more skilled at recognizing and ridiculing bad entertainment of late; this fills me with glee.

We have a shared love of "Glee." I think this still surprises her.

She saw Zombieland with me. She doesn't expect me to see any Twilight movies with her. (I should say: she doesn't want me to. Win for me.)

She asks how my fantasy team is doing.

She's carrying our first child.

(And she does have great boobs.)

You girls are making me tear up. I love you so, you beautiful ladies of Pajiba.

Posted by: Smokin at November 18, 2009 2:41 PM

My wife and I were married last year after 13 years of friendship. I was living 330 miles away at this time last year and she had just gotten out of a 5 year long relationship. One day last December she asks me over for dinner and 5 hours later I show up at her door. We talk all night, get no sleep, and it was amazing. We got married on New Years Eve.

Now what makes this one special? I've had my share of girlfriends through high school, college, grad school and I even dated someone I worked with at my first job. This lady blows them away. She's funny, smart, beautiful, witty, doesn't take shit from people and wants to make a positive change in the world. She works with children in San Francisco Schools who have f'ed up parents, problems adapting socially and some serious mental problems. She channels her guides and acts as a medium to allow folks to find find their paths or chat with long dead relatives. She tells me when I'm out of line and helps me back when I'm out of sorts.

Most of all I love her because, as a psychic in Hawaii recently told us, she is my twin soul. Whatever souls are made of, ours is the same.

Also, I love me. I mean, I'm the most awesome person I know.

Posted by: figgy at November 18, 2009 2:47 PM

I'm lucky to have so many awesome chicks in my life -- my mother, my sisters, my friends -- but the hands-down coolest is my daughter. She's seven years old, smart, curious, and funny. She's a complete and utter tomboy, which I never was, and when we got her the Bakugan launcher for her birthday, instead of the Bakugan shooter she had requested (apparently they're different. Who knew?), she handled the resulting disappointment with grace and dignity. Some moms at her school were dishing to me about breaking up a "mean girls" ring at the lunch table, but one of them was gratifyingly quick to turn to me and say "But not your daughter. She's a friend to all men and women." Also, not that I'm biased or anything, but the kid's gorgeous. I'm disgustingly proud of her.

(Of course, I'm equally besotted with her five-year-old brother, Tiny Trouble, but the title of this thread was not "Little Guys with Roly-Poly Tummies and Wacked Out Senses of Humor You Adore." Some other time, maybe.)

Posted by: Another Kate at November 18, 2009 2:47 PM

I'm breaking rules.
My mama. She's been through it, and still manages to keep going and stay hopeful.
My sister. That girl loves fiercely and her lack of gray area is as much respect-commanding as it is frustrating. Plus she's a kick-ass surgeon.
My group of girlfriends. I went 2/3 of my life longing for friendships like these and finally found them in my 20s. We're all different and have our own issues, but I've never seen people drop everything and come together so fast when one of us is in need. We form like Voltron.
And of course, the Pajibettes. You guys are goddamn cool.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at November 18, 2009 2:47 PM

Aaaaaaaand Nicole has made me tear up.

Why I love her back:

-She is one of the funniest people I have ever met. Seconds within meeting in person I knew I had a keeper.
-Even though she hates the phone, she will listen to me bitch about my dad and my fears and whatever extremity I managed to sprain that day.
-Her random phone calls to me at work take me out of my journal running stupor and make me smile the rest of the day.
-She has ruined me for Olive Garden breadsticks.
-She once wished me an elastic vagooter. I will not elaborate.

Posted by: Julie at November 18, 2009 2:48 PM

-She has ruined me for Olive Garden breadsticks.

I dearly hope these points are not related.

Posted by: Alexmeng at November 18, 2009 2:59 PM

I could tell you all about how she makes me a better man, how she is empathetic and understanding and how I get to be vulnerable around her and drop all my defenses. I could tell you about how she has stuck by me through think and thin, staying calm when I need to panic and panicking when I need to suck it up and be strong for her. But who needs that sap, right? Here's what's really cool about her:

She quotes movies constantly, and brilliantly. I'm not talking about the cliched lines from big budget comedies that everyone and their frat brother knows, I'm talking about the ability to find the perfect to random line that resonates with the emotional tenor of the moment we are in from any familiar pop-culture source. It's like a game we play. We can communicate entirely in movie quotes more effectively than some couples can with the entire English language at their disposal. When she says 'there go the god damn brownies' I know exactly what she is feeling. When the project she is working on starts getting a lot of local businesses signing up I don't have to tell her how proud I am, I just say 'the word is out on you Oneders.'

She loves Halloween. She always wants to dress up as something cool and couple-themed. We've done Jack and Marla from Fight Club, Clarence and Alabama from True Romance, Mulder and Scully from X-Files, and others.

She is a music trivia genius. She can identify a song based on just the first few notes. Sometimes I'll put my MP3 player on shuffle and challenge her. She'll usually have the name within the first few seconds, before I have even processed what we are hearing. People will call her on her cell phone in the middle of a Saturday afternoon, apropos of nothing, and badly mangle a snippet of lyrics to some obscure 80's pop tune in hopes that she can identify the singer and song title so they can finally get it out of their head. She doesn't disappoint.

And I also have to mention the most miraculous achievement I have ever witnessed: She took microscopic 23-chromosome contribution from me and spun it into the other coolest chick I know, our 14-month old daughter. She literally created a pint size human out of next to nothing. She is fucking magical.

And not only that, but the kid is flat out awesome, cute as can be, nearly done with her 52 books for Cannonball II, and likes David Bowie, Tom Waits and the Steve episodes of Blues Clues (just like mom).

My two favoritest 'jibettes: Julie and Nicole. Jules drove all the way down from Philly last Friday to go out for my birthday with me, and she even agreed to go to a show with me for a singer she's never even heard. If that's not awesome, I don't know what is.

And Nikki... you just get it. All of it. And I love you for it.

Posted by: lizzieborden at November 18, 2009 3:24 PM

I told this story on a thread like this before I think, but I'll tell it again, because it's a favorite of mine.

Before I'd "officially" asked out my girlfriend, we (along with a friend of mine) went to see Revolutionary Road at the local theater. Obviously, Revolutionary Road is one of the most brutally depressing films about marriage ever made. It's two hours of shit raining on this couple, and it's absolutely superb, yet absoutely terrifying. I was still speechless when we walked out of the theater. I was certain I wouldn't be able to laugh again for days.

This girl, this perfect angel, looked right up and me and said, "Christian, will you marry me?"

And I laughed all the way to the car.

I fucking love this woman. 9 months later, and I've never been happier. I'm dating one of the coolest chicks I've ever met.

Posted by: Christian H. at November 18, 2009 3:32 PM

Seriously though, Whorish Mouth is effing awesome. She is honestly one of the most beautiful people i have ever met in my lifetime (like...pin-up hot. Literally. Classic Cheesecake photogrtaphy, stockings, red lips, and the little 'Oops!' face...I need someone reputable to take pics like this for me)..but also beautiful all around.

She has a smile that lights up the room. Her cheeks get all shiny and collect light, from seemingly out of nowhere, when she does it. And eyes deep and sultry enough to drown an army in. She laughs at everything. Smiles at everything. She has this weird obsession with her dog that is rubbing off on me. She's totally nuts. (She hears animals crying out to her from around the neighborhood and actively searches them out.) She listens when I need her to. Puts me in my place when I need my head checked. She supports anything I want to try to do no matter how lofty, or ridiculous a goal. She has the 'AR', which Julie and I both enjoy immensely. She loves me for who I am. She loves me despite past missteps. I see the greatest future ever with her.

...and it's almost as bright at when she smiles.

Posted by: PissBoy at November 18, 2009 3:36 PM

My partner...because she loves me unconditionally. She is quiet and shy but funny when she chooses to open up. She puts up with the crazy mess that is my family and has adopted my younger brothers as her own. And she laughs at most of my jokes.

I was originally going to write about my wife, but I think everyone on this site knows the coolest chick in my life is my daughter (she's pretty much the spitting image of her mother, as well, so anything I say about her can also double for my wife).

Somehow, at just three years of age (it's actually her birthday tomorrow), my daughter is the coolest chick I know. She's smart, she has a wickedly evil sense of humor, and she's got more attitude than most thirteen year-old girls, which makes the thought of her actually becoming a teenager absolutely terrifying. She's a total nerd, but can also be very girly.

Her favorite TV shows are Wonder Woman (the Lynda Carter version), Justice League, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Spongebob. Her favorite movies are The Wizard of Oz, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Finding Nemo, and Kiki's Delivery Service (she dressed up as Kiki yesterday with one of my wife's purple shirts and a back-scratcher for a broom). She also loves little girl things like Barbies, My Little Pony, and playing dress-up. When she plays dress-up, though, she doesn't mess around wtih pretending to be a mere princess. She demands we all call her "Queen Highness," and will strike you with her sceptre if you should dare to call her anything else.

She's very enthusiastic about coloring and drawing, even if she's not quite there with the technical aspects of it. I just tell people she's not one to be contained by your so-called "lines;" she'll color where she damn well pleases, even if it occasionally ends up on her bed, my shirts, her wall, the toilet, or various doors throughout the apartment.

She's got a mouth like a sailor, and knows when to use it. Denied another cup of chocolate milk? "Oh damnit!" Dog on the table, stealing her lunch? "Get down, you fucking dog!" Getting reprimanded by Mommy? "Whatever, you're fucking dirt anyway."

Last night she came up with a new one. When my wife caught her destroying a stack of napkins on the table at the Chinese buffet where we were eating, and asked her why she did it, my daughter answered, deadpan, "Cuz I'm a dick."

I couldn't love this little girl more, and I'm going to be wishing the best of luck to whatever boy (or girl) manages to steal her heart down the road. It's going to be an interesting trip.

The most amazing females in my life are my daughters Vivian and Josephine. They are three and a half and almost two years old and they no longer operate individually but as a cohesive unit. Vivian is more cerebral, artsy, kind of needy and whiny, but smart as a whip and cute as a button. I didn't know how another daughter could live up to her but then came Josephine who is smart, spunky, sassy, independent, and drop dead gorgeous. To see them interact as sisters will squeeze your heart until you can no longer stand it and you have to break down crying. They LOVE each other so much and show such unconditional support and compassion, but also frequently have to be reminded not to push each other down the stairs. I can only hope that they continue the amazing relationship they have into adulthood and throughout life. And as they sit around as adults and bitch about how crazy their mother is, I can only hope it's because I'm still such a big part of their lives. For a person who was dragged kicking and screaming into motherhood, they are now the loves of my life.

My grandmother is a 79 year old widow who is still working as a waitress at a dump of a diner three days a week. She's a compulsive gambler and obsessive filigree crocheter. She'll clog your arteries with butter slopped on all food sorts but cooks everything, shy of a loaf of bread, from scratch every day. She knows the names of every major player on every NBA team, tons of stats, and has just successfully bet on basketball games for the first time this month. She does outdoor seasonal window art for money or free food, indoor oil landscapes for fun, and painted a tropical mural on her wall with palm trees, beach, water, and flamingoes just to piss off her now deceased husband.

That is why my grandmother is the coolest chick in my life.

[Hi everyone! Sally Merriweather, here! I think what Mr. S is trying to say is:]

Sally Merriweather is my lovely and patient assistant who lovingly types my comments for me. Three things I adore about her are: her dazzling smile, her boisterous laugh, and her fabulous fashion sense. I would be a complete, rambling wreck without her.

Posted by: Skitz at November 18, 2009 4:06 PM

Like so many others I gotta go with mom as my favorite chick.

She was 5 years old when she was struck with polio. Doctors told my grandparents that it'd be a long shot for her to walk again normally and that it was a near impossibility for her to lead a normal life. They told her that she'd never have children.

She spent the next five years walking in giant orthopedic shoes; my grandmother denying her the chance to feel sorry for herself. But by the time of her sixteen birthday, she walked and danced and was as normal a girl as any other.

She then lost her dad at age 18 and, along with my two older aunts, was pressed into having to take care of the rest of the family. She lived through an earthquake, met and married my dad. Then, as civil war raged, was forced to put her 2 year old and her 1 year old son in the hands of her mother-in-law as they boarded the last flight out of Managua. 48 hours later she was staring at armed Sandinista guerillas pointing AK-47s at her, my dad and her family.

She lived through that and had 2 more kids before, having lived through communist rule, moved with her family to America.

I wish I could say things have been easier, but life is rarely that. Through it all she's been strong, smart, protecting of her family, has never lost her sense of humor or her values. She's raised four big, strong men and lives as happy a life as possible.

And she taught me one thing above all: weather the bad days, but remember them when the good days come.

/sorry for the long post.

Posted by: Fredo at November 18, 2009 4:13 PM

OK. Real post.

My mom is ace, but I wouldn't say cool. My mom exemplifies mom. She is very good at it, but I wouldn't say, "Hey Mom, let's go do shrooms and watch Speed Racer" (or whatever it is you kids do nowadays".

Now, here's where my problem comes in with this comment diversion. I know cool chicks. I am friends with cool chicks. I know cool chicks that drink me under the table and then we get thai food and watch PCU and laugh despite coming to the inebriated realization that the movie is way more right-wing than my 13 year old self realized when I first saw it.

But they are not my chicks. They are chicks that I happen to know, and I am honored to be called their friends.

And they read Pajiba, so if they glance down into the comments, yes this is about you.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at November 18, 2009 4:14 PM

What a great thread...

My chick is my goddaughter, Stephanie. I first met her before she had her first bath; little, red and wrinkled, demonstrating her still marvelous lung power. She's now 2 1/2.

She's smart, stubborn, and stunningly cute. I'm already afraid of the hell she's going to put us through during her teen years.

She has me completely in her power, and knows it, and isn't afraid to exploit it. She makes me laugh out loud on a daily basis.

I love her more than life itself.

Posted by: superasente at November 18, 2009 4:42 PM

She showed cancer the what's what.
She bore the NinjaStar.
She was an EE.
For 15 years, she was mine.
And for the next however many years Alastair and I have on this Earth, she will watch over us.
And when all of that is done, she will be ours again.

That is why my chick is cool.

I love my friend Heather, because she is Awesome, and she gets me. And she is the only person in my world who gets even more excited than I do when I make EE's top 10 and email it to her. She 'gets' Pajiba too, although she has no time to come and play.

I love the Pajibettes. I spend far more quality time with you than with any other living women. AvB, Snuggie, Nadine, Cindy, Figgy, Julie, Nicole, esme, Laniey, Ms. Momo, MM, and the countless others I meet round here, You all make every day fun. I am lucky to have a crowd of cool chicks in my life (those running the site today are of special note), but the two most prominent are my wife and almost 2 year old daughter/dancing partner. Seeing as my wife has seniority, I'll stick to her 3 things:
1) She can out sass and smartass me any day even before she's had her coffee.
2) She shows unwavering love for her family despite a backbreaking schedule.
3) She willingly married a HUGE dork.
4) She would scoff at the idea that she could be best described with a list of three measly items.

Posted by: branded at November 18, 2009 4:46 PM

The coolest chick in my life is my sister. She was an excellent parent to me and my brother when my parents could not be relied upon. She almost always says the right thing at the right time. She can make almost anything more fun. She is empathetic and she listens well. She is also one of the most loving people I have ever known. She is tiny, yet fearsome to behold when she is angry. Heaven help you if you cross her or someone she loves. She is the reason that I am the upstanding, quasi-respectable, moderately functional person I am today. I love her dearly.

Aw, great comment diversion, Cindy! These are some really sweet comments.

The coolest chicks in my life would be my mom, my best friend Andrea, and my friend Nicole from college. Mom's patient, understanding, and smart; Andrea's empathic, optimistic, and trustworthy; and Nicole's super enthusiastic, fun-loving, and open-minded. It's weird to describe them in such terms; however, if I don't, I'll sit here and write a book about them. I love them so much.

And I love the 'Jibettes! You are some of the most amazing women I've been privileged to meet. And it's all thanks to Rowles and his amazing blog.

My chick is my big sister Nieve. She sometimes comments, usually to support me or someting I've said. Just the other day I admitted to some pretty heinous issues and obessive compulsions with food. Nieve's reaction was to tell me I'm amazing.
She moved to London with barely a penny to her name and through sheer hard work and graft, she's made it and will probably, very soon, be on your list of top ten actresses of the year.
She's funny, ballsy, smarter than she knows, she would kill to protect me and our siblings and would be shamelessly popular for it in the media. She drinks like a fish but has never been fall down drunk (except one AMAZING time when she ran into my room, somewhat overexcited, leapt on to my bed and rolled over and off the other side)
She's a gorgeous blonde tall leggy big boobed viking to my skinny dark little Mick, she always has a smile and though we sometimes fight like cats and dogs, she'd have my back against any one even if i was in the wrong.
Nieve, you kick ass every day and take names in a pink notebook with a sparkly pen, but I wouldnt call you a girlie girl because you'd punch me right in the uterus and spit on me while I was down. You rock, and I love.
YOU FILTHY GINGER WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRREEE

My girl... I am a 28 year old collage Sophomore. Most of the people I know from school are still under 21. I always I feel old hanging around people on campus...very old...except around my girl. She is a 19 year old photography student. We are complete opposites in every fashion possible (young vs old, bitter vs happy, jaded fuck vs optimistic, meat eater vs vegan)...yet it works out fairly well. I don't know what it is about her, but I feel 10 years younger around her. Now, I can't stand her friends, hate today's music and culture in general...but I like her...so I put up with it. She is seriously the only reason I have bothered to keep going to school and not just quit and get a job overseas.

My wife. Today is our 14th anniversary (The traditional gift is ivory, so I'm hoping to hit an elephant on the way home), and 14 years are not nearly enough. She makes the worst day better and the best day doesn't exist without her. We can talk endlessly, or not talk at all and still be comfortable. She's the first to help somone who needs it, and the last to give up on someone.

My daughter. She manages to be a great student, a cheerleader (something I'm still profoundly uncomfortable with), and a smartass. As you might expect, I am by far the dullest, most inept person in my house. And happy to be.

i don't want to gush too much about my fave chick ever, as she may or may not read this site.

but yeah, big-sis-type, cracks my shit up, totally boll-weeviled herself into my skull and worked her way now to my heart, probably aiming for lower, but she knew when to stop.

her influence into my daily mood-swings is apparent. her PMS rubs off on me, from across the country, rather cunt-ry. luckily this is just once a month, and i don't mind the empathizing, especially when she lifts me up in so many ways every day.

i hate her for not having unlimited texting.

Posted by: gp at November 18, 2009 5:12 PM

My mom, definitely. Because we spent the night before Easter sitting up drinking wine and playing cards until four that morning, drunk off our asses and keeping the neighbors awake gossiping. Because we can fight with each other, claws out and screaming, and five minutes later make up with each other. And bad movies. We both love bad movies.

I'm gonna have to go with my Great-Aunt Janice. She was a classy lady who always wore too much lipstick and called everyone "Darling." She was a former Broadway actress who was in the original chorus of Oklahoma, and toured around Europe as Ado Annie. When she got cancer, she testified before Congress on the importance of alternative medicines.

We got to spend time together every summer when I was growing up, and she spoiled me rotten, took me to see great theater, and made me feel special. She was officially the coolest person I have ever met, and I miss her every single day.

Aw dammit Nadine now Im tearing up. Little ho.
But in all seriousness thank you, you kick ass and I love your short, pale, dark haired, mick butt.
And yeah Little Noo's my chick; moody, chip on her shoulder, short, gothic, Muse fan, highly intelligent, unbelievably gifted writer (well you all know that she's only been number one EE TWICE! for serious, y'all will be reviewing her books soon and her short films they are amazing), creative, funny, wierd, foul mouthed, twisted, dark...very dark, beautiful, cute, a spit fire, fiesty, sensitive, rude, angry, deep, nerdy, looks like a little owl, doesnt drink but when she does she gets hammered after one glass of vodka and OJ, fussy, picky, prickly, sings in public, great singing voice, razor sharp wit, an imagination you could get lost in (and I have, seriously it was scary), awesome dress sense, demented dress sense, looks like the love child of tinkerbell and an evil pixie, hugely compassionate, loving and really, really cool.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg-she is seriously cool, I hope one day you all get a cvhnace to meet her.

Oh and hell yeah am I gonna marry Saaaaaaaaaarsgard!

Posted by: Nieve at November 18, 2009 5:31 PM

Nieve, I'm sorry, I really am, but Cindy and I have already laid claims on ASkars (he's mine) and we have designated a time (mine, I say) and a place (all mine) where it shall be determined, through a series of physical and mental battles, who will finally bed the golden god himself (me). You are welcome to marry what's left of him - just know that he'll probably come to you sans penis, since I plan to bronze it and hang it above my mantle for future generations to admire.

Posted by: Kolby at November 18, 2009 5:52 PM

Oh Kolby...I say this with love and respect to you and Cindy, but...this might turn ugly. I mean...she might actually try and kill you. I'm not exagerrating or joking here. Check you backseat. If you make it home, dont go in alone, and if she's not there yet, invest, QUICKLY in some sturdy security.
As I say; Love and Respect.
But Nieve will come and take skulls as her prizes. And Skarsssgaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard and all his aaaaaaaaaaaaa's.
It's almost sad, what she'll do to him.
Actually...Y'all ae going to watch the SKANK TAINT of Gaga off've him before you do anything with him, right?
I mean I know they probably havent had sex what with her lacking a traditional vagina in place of her weird dingleberry penis, but she was all like...up on him.
Get thee to the bleach factory!

Posted by: Nadine at November 18, 2009 6:10 PM

Ah Kolby, Kolby, Kolby. I understand your lust, for he is spectacular, but what ASkars and I have is pure, beautiful and special.
However I understand where you are coming from, so how about this; you have your wicked way with him, bronze penis and all and then I'll marry him and buy a strap on?? Or you could make a plaster cast on said penis and leave his intact? But after the wedding I'll give you Monday and Wednesday to 'visit' while I take the viking kids to their kick boxing and viking boat steering classes. Sound fair?

Happy Paheeba Day! Reading the Paheeba Day posts and everyone's comments makes me smile. R.I.P. AlabamaPink.

Who are my favorite chicks?

My mom. I'm undeserving of this amazing woman. As the second of eleven children, she helped my grandparents take care of her younger siblings during the Vietnam War. They were extremely poor, but she kept her strength. Yeah, she survived the war (she has a scar from a bomb), and was one of the first in her family to escape to Indonesia on those crudely-made boats, then immigrate to the U.S. She struggled when she came here, but she cared for the younger brothers who came after, took on several day jobs, sent money back to her family in Vietnam, and went to school all at once. She's got brains, wit, compassion, independence, skill (her cooking is famous, and she's great with her hands), and beauty (she's like 50-something, but looks a lot younger). I would also like to think that she raised my brother and me right. We sometimes have that typical mother/teenage daughter relationship, but I wouldn't ask for any other mom. I can only hope I'll turn out to be half of what she is when I reach her age.

My mom's seven sisters/my aunts. They're resilient, smart, kindhearted, and each one possesses a unique something. They're amazing women.

My friend, Erika. We've known each other for five years, since middle school and we just started college this year. We call each other all the time, and each call is like 2+ hours long. We complement each other, and there's no other girl I'd want to start this new phase in my life with. I hope our friendship lasts long.

We do it all in our underwear though. And we hug a lot.

There are a few really fuckin' cool chicks in my life, but if I have to pick one, it would be my sister S (no offense to my other sisters). She was brutal while I was growing up, and unfortunately spent many years acting more like a mom than a sister, but it wasn't her choice. As I've gotten older and our significant age gap seems less significant, our relationship took a sharp turn towards awesome.

Wednesday nights were an event for us: Lights out, ANTM followed by LOST followed by Project Runway, followed by gossip and begrudgingly doing homework or going to bed. S is so god damn funny and intelligent and strikingly beautiful, but completely snotty and fiercely loyal and defensive. Her musical tastes have barely evolved since the early '90s, but somehow it isn't lame. She's super smart, but only wants to read DragonLance books and subscribes to Star magazine because she likes their crosswords. She's unbelievably competitive and swears that she never loses, even when she does. She's the best Pictionary partner that ever existed, and she'll kick your ASS at Dr. Mario. Don't even bother trying.

there is a woman who deeply influenced my life. she is the most passionate, self-sacrificing, hard working, sincere and humble person whom i have ever known. six years my elder, she was a mentor to me in my teenage years and inspired me in more ways that i could explain in a short post. we had a really stupid fight years ago and then i moved away; we never resolved the problem. i try not to think about her, but this thread and the question it posed led me to reach out to her and i am confident that she will respond positively. that's how she rolls.
many, many thanks.

I'm late but must answer this.

Angie has been my best friend since I was four and she was five. She loves me unconditionally and I her. We've been friends so long, she's become family. Her parents are my parents. Her sister is my sister. (I draw the line at her husband, he's WAY too hairy.) She makes me laugh and I make her laugh. Sometimes until we pee. And she GETS me. That's valuable.

My daughter is the other chick. Scary smart, opinionated as hell, strong, gorgeous and loves herself just the way she is. She is truly my proudest achievement. And I have a few. But no degree, no book being published, no other single thing I could do could top knowing I actually had a hand in creating and raising that wonderful young woman. Sometimes I feel like yelling "you're welcome world!" And those of you who wrote about your moms? They feel that way about you.

My best friend for over 10 years, G. We met in middle school, and we hated each other with a passion. Then we started having some mutual friends, hung out more, and became best friends almost instantly. We even went to college together for awhile, which was most definitely the best times of my life so far. We are very different on many levels, but the same in a couple key areas: fierce loyalty, brutal honesty, and a very dark sense of humor. We also enjoy shit-talking. A lot.

But my favorite quality about G is what she contributes to my world. I've battled depression my whole life and can go to some very dark places, but no matter what she is always there and can always bring me out of it. It sounds incredibly corny, but she is the light of my life. The best person I know.

Thanks for this post! Even though none of you know her and people probably stopped reading after the 50th comment or so, it just feels good to acknowledge her and what she means to me.

She's a kind, loving mother, who makes chocolate chip cookies, tea, hates Glenn Beck, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, George Bush, Sean Hannitty, and most of all Rudy Giuliani, and introduced me to the wonders of hating Richard Nixon, the second most mockable free world leader in history.

Her tools of love and hatred might just save the world.

My mom: how couldn't I like my mom? besides the times she is arguing with my sister or grandma, she's quite interesting; slightly irresponsible, lazy yet organized; she's basically what every mom is supposed to be, but her flaws humanize and I appreciate that she doesn't try to keep a fake perfection, she's so natural when she's with my sister and me.

My sister: she's basically the anti-me; irresponsible, relaxed, friendly, outgoing, hot headed, creative and conflictive and that's why we get along so well, we complete each other and have a great brother sister dynamic where I try to get her to act more responsible while she tries to make me loosen up a little; there's hardly anyone else I can trust as much as her.

My best friend: she's just awesome; when I met her back in high school I had a crush on her but it didn't take me long to realize that we could be just friends and have a good relationship. She's fun, smart, socially concerned, slightly geeky and tomboyish yet quite femenine (as dumb as it sounds). We don't see each other much since she lives in a different city but I still consider her my best friend.

My current crush: also one of my closest friends, I love her because she's smart (she knows like 4 languages and wants to work in an international organization), hard working, bossy and outgoing; we are so incompatible and that's why I like spending time with her, she brings her manic pixie dream girl personality and just brightens my gray and monotonous days with it.

My Auntie M. She's the mom I always wanted/needed and never had. Sometimes she drives me nuts (and vice versa) but I know she loves me and only wants the best for me. I love that she's always trying something new and I've never seen her actually fail. It might not turn out as expected, but it's never a failure. She's the best cook I know and she's really fun to get drunk with. She's probably the nicest person I know.
We're really different people in general, but we have so many odd things in common that we're definitely related. We even dislike the same people and generally for the same reasons. That by itself is awesome.

My friend Robyn has perhaps the best sense of humour I've eve known...

My friend Robyn has more to do w/ me being sober than maybe anyone I know...

My friend Robyn and I have the bomb George and Gracie routine going...

My friend Robyn has NO IDEA how cool/sexy/awesome she is...

My friend Robyn has helped me w/ my screenwriting more than maybe anyone...

I even forgive my friend Robyn being a crazy cat lady...

Nix is the coolest because she justifies EVERYTHING that I do, no matter how rotten.

I’d have to talk with you here. That's not really something I usually do! I like studying a post that will make people think. Also, thank you to get allowing me to provide feedback!
