What's Streaming This Month? The Only Valentine's Special That Matters

Big Mouth Valentines (1).png

Lookin’ goooood, February! Hulu is dropping a new original series called PEN15 on February 8th. The comedy, produced by The Lonely Island guys, stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle as 13-year-old versions of each other in the year 2000… playing opposite actual 13-year-olds. The pair co-created the series, and it looks uncomfortably hilarious. But maybe too real?

Over on Amazon Prime, they’ve got Agatha Christie’s The ABC Murders launching today. That’s the one starring John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot, and Rupert Grint as an adult. Amazon’s also got just the thing for anyone feeling a little cynical this Valentine’s Day: Lorena, a 4-part docuseries (exec produced by Jordan Peele) that re-examines the Lorena Bobbitt scandal and the years of abuse that preceded the penis-chopping (February 15).

Netflix is starting the month out strong, with both the art world splatterfest Velvet Buzzsaw and Natasha Lyonne’s bad day do-over series Russian Doll dropping on February 1. And that would be exciting enough, but there’s more coming this month that’s worth talking about.

Big Mouth: My Furry Valentine — That’s right, the show about awkward teens awkwardly navigating awkward puberty is finally tackling the most awkward holiday of them all, with a special that arrives February 8th. I mean, what more do you need to know? Just watch the trailer:

The Breaker Upperers — I reviewed this one out of SXSW last year, where I fell in love with it. And I was wondering what happened to such a gem of a film, only to learn that naturally Netflix nabbed it and is rolling it out in time for Valentine’s Day (well, technically in time for the Valentine’s hangovers on Feb 15). So if you’re looking for a platonic rom-com written and directed by women (and produced by Taika Waititi!) about prioritizing friendship over love, then please watch this movie. You won’t regret it.

There’s also that new Steven Soderbergh basketball drama, High Flying Bird (Feb 8), the comic book adaptation The Umbrella Academy (Feb 15), and the return of Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (Feb 10) to look forward to! Here’s an overview of everything else you can expect this month!
