My Little Runaway
The Daily Trade Round-Up / Daniel Carlson
In what really feels like the thousandth comic book adaptation this year, Marvel Studios has announced another film project based on one of its titles. But this one’s different because it could be better than any of the rest of them: Brian K. Vaughan will adapt his own series, Runaways, for the big screen. Vaughan’s comic book is about a group of kids who find out their parents are actually supervillains and who then run away together in an attempt to form a team to take down their folks and save the world. It’s funny, sad, engaging, moving, and just way damn better than anything else Marvel has brought to the screen. What’s more, because Vaughan is involved in taking his creation and adapting it for film, there’s at least a decent chance that the end product could hold a faint echo of the original story’s energy. However, Marvel’s upcoming slate is already set through 2011, so we’ll have to make it through Thor before we get to see a frame of Runaways. Still, I’m hopeful this one will turn out well.
It’s been a hell of a week for 1980s cult franchises featuring scores by Queen. First, there was news of the forthcoming Highlander remake. But there’s more: Columbia is in talks to acquire the rights for a big-screen adaptation of Flash Gordon. The 1980 film version was deeply, deeply stupid — I’ve retained nothing more than the memory of Timothy Dalton wearing what may have been a suit of leaves — but at least it gave us this:
Top that, Hollywood. Breck Eisner (Sahara) is set to direct the new project, but no writers have been attached yet.
On a more serious note, there have been three deaths recently: “Laugh-In” co-creator Dick Martin, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince actor Rob Knox, and director/actor Sydney Pollack. Knox, 18, was stabbed to death in a brawl outside a London pub; Martin was 86 and died of respiratory complications in Santa Monica; and Pollack was 73 and died of cancer in Los Angeles. Weird weekend. In honor of Pollack, here’s a clip from Three Days of the Condor:
I know this round-up has been awfully clip-happy, but still, it’s time for the trailer watch. First up is the teaser for D.J. Caruso’s Eagle Eye, starring Shia LaBeouf and explosions:
Here’s the trailer for The Go-Getter, which played Sundance a few months ago:
And finally, in honor of the news that “Sports Night” is finally getting a quality DVD release, let’s all watch Casey learn the names:

On Runaways, I couldn't agree more with your assessment of it. It's a fantastic series. I just started reading it in January and have loved it, despite the, at times, uneven art. The story, dialogue, and characters are just fantastic. I have high hopes.

Brian K. Vaughan is pretty damn good at everything he does. If he's allowed to do it (and Iron Man was a decent sign) it'll likely be great.
He's practically a one-man comic reniassance.
Also, because I know at least one or two of you are gamers - weep and despair, Kurt Wimmer was apparantly tapped to 'direct' a Metal Gear Solid movie.
*sigh* It's not easy being geek.

Grrrrr.........damn DVD double-dipping
Double grrrrr........my unending Sports Night love that will compel me to purchase

How odd. I was listening to a song with the chorus lyrics of "My little runaway" at the moment I refreshed Pajiba, and what do I see?
Perhaps the universe is trying to tell me something. I shall have to check this out; it looks good.
*thanks Pajiba overloads*

Aww, Dick Martin RIP. I used to BEG my parents to let me stay up and watch the original Laugh-In (yes, I am old).
"Say goodnight, Dick."
"Goodnight, Dick."

You're not wrong. Everything of his that I've picked up, Runaways, Y, Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, etc. has been fantastic. If he writes something, I'll buy it. Easy as that.

Well, I guess there's no rush to catch up on "Runaways" since you're right, it'll probably be years. Still, it's on deck at work along right near the Scott Pilgrims I'm surprised they ordered. As ever I've got a bag of monthlies I'm sorely behind on and I keep reading other things too (I'm sorry, "Neverwhere", Julie's right and you're pretty fun but I've got to come back later, and you're already overdue!). I probably just need to take "Midnighter" off my subscription list. Garth's not writing it anymore and it seems to come out every other week. "Here's another five issues!" I only pick up every few weeks as it's a bit of a drive to that store so the load can sometimes be embarrassing.
Even though "One Vision" is my favorite Queen soundtrack song, as I've mentioned, someone out there better be happy that it's not "Iron Eagle" being remade.
Like anything could touch the original. P'shaw!
(no, that's not entirely serious, but that sure was some great aviation porn for a ten year old! Yeah, yeah, I used the "-porn", what of it? Besides, Pajiba didn't invent it so don't blame....it? Even though I do prefer the F-14. But Flash wouldn't have Brian Blessed, would it? That's sounding like Game Over to me)

So, based on that clip, Flash Gordon and Dayman are the same person?
Posted by: Nicole at May 27, 2008 11:43 AM
"Runaways" does sound interesting. I didn't get into Marvel as a kid. I was more into DC with Batman and Superman, so the Marvel heroes open up new territory to explore.
And thanks, now I have Del Shannon's "Runaway" stuck in my head.

Dick Martin's passing is sad. I used to watch Laugh-In in syndication on the old Channel 25 (before it became a Fox affiliate) in Boston. That and Match Game (but not on Ch. 25), on which he was a frequent guest star. I'm old.
I forgot about all the soundtrack work Queen did for terrible 80s movies, and I agree, at least no one is remaking Iron Eagle. FRIED CHICKEN!

If you want a fun do-it-yourself MST3K weekend, rent the original Flash Gordon with Buster Crabbe, and follow it up with Flesh Gordon, which is a wonderful softcore satire of the original, complete with penisaurises (penisauri?) and a truly funny giant monster.

Screw Runaways, when the hell is Y getting produced. The movie deal for that was announced a long ass time ago.

Oh, dear Lord. I'm not much of a Metal Gearhead (I don't know if that's the term for MGS fans, but it should be) but this still makes me depressed. I couldn't even sit through Ultraviolet, and I loves me some Milla Jovovich. Sigh.

Since he is writing it now, will Whedon be in volved in The Runaways as well?

RIP, Sydney Pollack. He was one of the few directors that I was really aware of in Hollywood. The last movie I saw him in was ok (Avenue Montaigne) but he seemed like a decent guy.

In honor of Sydney Pollack I think I'll finally watch Tootsie for the first time.
I saw Teeth over the weekend, which was DEFINITELY an interesting little movie. I wasn't thrilled with how *minor spoiler, but not really* almost every man portrayed in the film seemed to be prone to sexual assault, but I liked the whole female empowerment vibe. Am I weird in admitting that I really really wanted to see what the vagina dentata actually looked like? Did she have fangs? Or were they more human-like teeth? I kept imagining Fizzgig from The Dark Crystal shoved up a cooch.

I can't get the Sports Night link to work. Could someone summarize the info? I love the show but someone adbsconded with my DVDs and the out-of-print sets have gotten expensive.

Brian K. Vaughn rules. Period. And having him adapt his own stuff? *does best Tennant impression* Brilliant!
Flash Gordon? Did Sci-Fi's horrible, horrible mistake teach them ANYTHING?
Also, because I know at least one or two of you are gamers - weep and despair, Kurt Wimmer was apparantly tapped to 'direct' a Metal Gear Solid movie.
Yeah, not the first guy I would have put there. Then again, Paul Thomas Anderson was rumored to be interested, and that seemed even weirder to me. I wonder why they didn't use David Hayter's take.
Posted by: Vermillion at May 27, 2008 1:17 PM
I'm so sad about Sydney Pollack. His scenes with Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie -- especially (1) the Russian Tea Room and (2) the last one after the engagement ring -- are classics. He made some stinkers (Random Hearts anyone?) but he also made some great movies. I love Three Days of the Condor and could practically stage the entire thing from memory. RIP.
Posted by: Louise at May 27, 2008 1:22 PM
Julie, you should absolutely watch Tootsie. You won't regret it!
I didn't realize until today that Sydney Pollack played the agent. He was a funny dude.
Posted by: MO at May 27, 2008 1:26 PM
Paul Thomas Anderson doing a Metal Gear movie?!
Are you sure you didn't mean Paul WS Anderson? Because I can't begin to say how much money I would pay to see Paul Thomas Anderson direct a video game movie.
It would be like "Terrence Malick's "Assassin's Creed" or "Ridley Scott's 'Metroid'"
... which would be kind of hot, actually.
Posted by: twig at May 27, 2008 1:35 PM
Paul Thomas Anderson doing a Metal Gear movie?!
RUMORED. It was a rumor that he was interested, and I think somebody debunked it already. Still, that is indeed the right Paul Anderson that was mentioned.
Still, it does sound kinda awesome when you think about it.
And Metroid by Ridley Scott? That sounds even more awesome.

"penisaurises (penisauri?)"
Penisauropods!
Posted by: Geetch at May 27, 2008 1:56 PM
bartap, I had a similar problem with my Sports Night DVD running away (not its choice..) and the replacements getting freakin expensive, so here is the linked article sum up:
Sept 30 release date
special edition DVD (same process that got done to My So-Called Life)
both seasons
2 DVDs of extras (I think)- commentaries, where they are nows, deleted scenes, etc
unfortunatly they could not get rid of the laugh track on the fisrt part of season one
I am already counting down the days on my calander, one of my absolute favorite TV shows!
Posted by: Bethy at May 27, 2008 1:59 PM
Still, that is indeed the right Paul Anderson that was mentioned.
Oh, that makes the Wimmer news even more of a heartbreaker. Solid Snake in "There Will Be Blood"?! Why, PT, why did you forsake us?
Metroid was queued for John Woo, but that was over a year ago, and that movie would all come down to the writer anyway. Grr. Argh.
"Baz Luhrmann's Katamari Damacy"
Ok I'll shut up now.
Posted by: twig at May 27, 2008 2:17 PM
Julie, watch "Tootsie." Its entire cast is so good, especially Bill Murray as Hoffman's roommate. I think I'll have to watch it again.
I just watched the "Sports Night" clip. Godtopus, that was a great show. I'll have to investigate getting the DVD.
Posted by: rlr260 at May 27, 2008 2:25 PM
especially Bill Murray as Hoffman's roommate.
Sold! I had no idea he was in it.
Posted by: Julie at May 27, 2008 2:27 PM
Flesh Gordon also has a great DVD commentary that basically describes the history of the soft-core industry in California in the 70s including the money trails, distribution systems, and how they avoided the police. Also discusses the early work of Phil Tippett and Craig T. Nelson...

Runaways sounds interesting...i'll definitely go and see it; when it's released.
Posted by: Neena at May 27, 2008 4:00 PM
My bookstore didn't have any of the Runaways there, which sucks because it's usually reliable.
I haven't read a great graphic novel since Fables (still waiting for TP #10, sigh), so I might just buy the first few on faith.
Trade paperbacks or the hardcover? Anyone with a recommendation over which is worth getting?
Posted by: Mick J at May 27, 2008 7:30 PM
That Flash Gordon movie was awesome. Cheezy but awesome. Piss off!
Posted by: EJ at May 27, 2008 10:50 PM
Thanks for the Sports Night info, Bethy. I finally got a chance to watch the clip posted above and, once again, I'm blown away by just how good that show was. It's also kind of fun to see a pre-West Wing Donna Moss on another Sorkin show.
Posted by: bartap at May 28, 2008 12:19 AM
whoa. spambot stooping to an all time low there, I have to say...mind you, this is pajiba...maybe good ol' spammy is learning to fit in...is it wrong that...that almost makes me proud??
Posted by: rach at May 28, 2008 3:19 AM
Thanks muchly for the Sports Night news. That made my morning. I haven't watched that in ages.
I found the DVDs, but they're close to $100. Maybe HMV will have these for a little less and I can splurge on 'em. It seems odd to me that Josh Charles didn't get more love in Hollywood.
""Baz Luhrmann's Katamari Damacy" "
Don't tease me, dude. I've spent way more (sober0 hours playing that game than I'd like to admit. (Yes, with the unlimited time cheat.)

Hardcover. As much as I hate nearly all current Marvel editorial decisions, they make a good quality hardcover edition.
The little trades are too small to enjoy, and quite a bit of the Runaways art, especially the first book and a half, is great.
Posted by: twig at May 28, 2008 10:06 AM
neat little bit of trivia for ya bartap and other like-minded Sorkin fans
it was that little role in the clip above that introduced Sorkin to Janel Moloney. He actually wrote the character Donna Moss (West Wing) for her, he was so impressed by her acting in that small part in Sports Night.
I always though that was pretty neat :)
Posted by: Bethy at May 28, 2008 10:55 AM
Thanks twig. I went with my gut and had already ordered the hardcover.
Posted by: Mick J at May 28, 2008 11:52 AM
Wait, old SN dvd sets are going for $100? I'd sell mine, since I'm totally buying the deluxe re-release set.
