Depeche Mode’s Sounds of the Universe tour is on hold until June 8th. Dave Gahan is resting after having a low-grade malignant tumor removed from his bladder. Gahan originally went into the hospital for gastroenteritis but further tests revealed the tumor. Missed shows are either being cancelled or rescheduled, but things look optimistic for the kick off of their North American tour in July.

Sigur Rós is almost finished with their new album. The band says that the album will have a slower and more ambient sound than their last album, Með Suð I Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust, which was also in my top five favorite albums of 2008. The album will be released sometime in 2010. Lead singer Jónsi Birgisson is also working on an acoustic solo album with the help of composer Nico Muhly. No release date is set for that album yet.

Stone Temple Pilots are currently playing sets of live shows in Canada and the U.S. through July, and they are also working on a new album. They are collaborating with producer Don Was, who has also worked with Iggy Pop, Willie Nelson and Poison.

De la Soul is also working on a new album titled You’re Welcome. They are currently in collaboration with Nike, who is using their music in commercials. They also released a single track 44-minute recording with Nike in April called Are You In, which is available on iTunes. In addition to the new album and Nike, they also contributed to Gorillaz’s new album called Plastic Beach. — Felicia

Our boy, TylerDFC (an eloquent around here) also runs his own site, RUFKM, which we have plugged from time to time. But today, he’s got a doozy. TylerDFC has in interview with Al Jourgensen of Ministry. Go check it out.

It’s been a decade since Dr. Dre released his last album, 2001 (released in 1999) and he’s finally due to release his follow-up, Detox, which was supposed to be released five years ago. The album is supposed to finally be released this year. For the few Dre fans out in Pajiba-land, you can hear a muddle snipped from the album in a new commercial Dre has out for Dr. Pepper, because apparently — during that 10-year lay-off, Dre — like Ice Cube — forgot that he was once in motherfucking N.W.A. Sell. Out.

In chart news, the Top 5 Albums for this week are:
1. Eminem’s Relapse
2. Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown
3. Kenny Chesney’s Greatest Hits II
4. Dane Cook’s ISolated INcident
5. Busta Rhymes Back to My B.S.

Tori Amos’ new album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin also debuted at number nine; Lionel Ritchie’s latest debuted at number 24; and in “American Idol” chart news no one could possibly care about, Adam Lambert’s Season 8 Favorite Performances debuted at number 33, ahead of “AI’s winner, Kris Allen, whose Season 8 Favorite Performances debuted at number 50. Ruben Studdard also had a new album debut at number 36, well ahead of Kellie Pickler’s latest debut, at number 91.

My God: The Billboard 100 is littered with “American Idol” contestants.

And for the interested, two of my favorite artists release albums tomorrow: The Dave Matthews Band unleashes Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King and Elvis Costello releases the T. Bone Burnett produced, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane.

Oh, and hey! Susan Boyle lost. I have no idea why I take some joy in this. But I do. The poor woman (who was admitted to the hospital for exhaustion after the performance) didn’t need any more attention. You can see her final performance here.

I really felt bad for Boyle; the woman had pipes, yet all anyone wanted to talk about was her looks and her not-really-anyones-business sex life. It was like "Hey, nice job displaying your talent, now we must utterly destroy you. No hard feelings."

Even when folks try to move past the "gotta be hot" mentality, there are always a few assholes whose gotta bring it back down. I mean, that opera dude from a couple of years ago didn't get nearly this much attention.

"Hey, nice job displaying your talent, now we must utterly destroy you. No hard feelings."

Man, exactly this.

Hey, if you base your singing career on an appearance on American Idol or Britain's Got Talent then your looks are fair game. Have you seen the shows?

Posted by: fifteenkeys at June 1, 2009 12:48 PM

Man, that top five is depressing.

Vermillion - yes, abslolutely.

I feel bad for her. During her past two appearances, she had none of the joy that came through on her first one. It was if she had been completely worn down. I'm not surprised that she went into the hospital due to exhaustion.

Susan Boyle only got as far as she did because of HOW unattractive she was. She has a good voice but not a pleasant one. If she was a 6/10 rather than a 2, they wouldn't have even shown her audition tape.

I feel sorry for Susan Boyle. I don't think she could handle the amount of publicity her first performance created. She actually looked sick to her stomach and nervous during her second performance because of such high expectations and the paparazzi following her everywhere. No one else on the show got near that amount of unasked for publicity. I think she will have a wonderful career if she is managed right. I love her voice. I've heard her sing acapella and she beats the crap out of the overprocessed voices I've been hearing on the radio.

I never would, but I can kinda see people watching "AI" since it's on (ostensibly free) TV and people can get really really bored and gotta watch SOMETHING. What I can't even begin to understand is people paying actual money for CDs put out by the contestants. It's like millions of people never get the joke. Do they all send $2,500 to the Nigerians too?

Sometimes I wish I didn't have a conscience.

My buddy Ben met Jonsi once. Talked to him for 20 minutes. Said he was really cool. And let's hope De La Soul do what they do best on the new album. I've been listening to 3 Feet High And Rising, and that record is fucking SICK!

I love Susan Boyle! Everytime I see that first performance (and I've seen it loads of times) I cry like a baby. It was one of those few moments where fate in humanity is restored. It was so far away than the overprocessed stuff we get on the radio and on our screens everyday. It was like humanity being lifted out of it's general mediocrity and someone who gives hope to all the rest who are just normal people but who have a dream. And what was even better than the excellent performance she gave was the genuine and honest joy she showed. She was admirable also in the respect she showed to the previously jeering crowd, giving a curtsy and blowing kisses (instead of showing them the middle finger they deserved).

I think it's silly to say that Susan Boyle lost Dustin. That's reducing everything to whoever comes 1st in the competition, which is irrelevant. She's struck a chord and won something much better than first place. The frumpy, unemployed woman suddenly has a career in front of her, possibly recording an album or performing in musicals. How many will remember the dancing group who came first in the show in years to come? Few, but everyone will remember Susan Boyle.

It doesn't matter that much that she didn't come first. She has achieved more than many others will ever achieve in their lives.

Personally I prefer the way she looked in her first performace. Sure, there were things she could arrange but there wasn't a need for something so radical. I don't know why everyone thinks she looked UGLY. She looked a bit unkempt. That's all. That new look somehow reminds me of a middle aged perverted man going through a mid-life crisis. Sorry Susan. I just liked you better in your natural homely look. Is anyone with me on this?

I hope she succeeds big time and people give her a break. Her personal life is not their business.

Barf: I like Susan's new look. Of course I have frizzy grey hair which I straighten and dye, and bushy eyebrows which I pluck, so I can relate. There's nothing wrong with spiffing up a little.

The problem was the tabloids and papparazzi were all over her, and she didn't get a moments peace. That has to take its toll on anyone.

The DMB record is fantastic! A return to the form of ole.

For those who dig These Crowded Streets or Busted Stuff, you'll love it :D

I think her true downfall is having the last name Boyle, coupled with being ugly.

If she was just ugly and she had a normal name like Susan Smith, you wouldn't get the disgusting imagery of a pus-filled boil every time someone says her name. That's the first thing I think about. Her name might as well be Virginia Afterbirth.

Posted by: Homeless J at June 1, 2009 6:03 PM

@ Homeless J: That's so funny, because the first thing I think about when someone says "Susan Smith" is that woman who drowned her children and blamed it on a fictional black dude a few years back.

(Well, killing your children isn't funny. Okay? I know that. I meant the name association game. Jeez Louise.)

Touche, Che. I'll try to let it show less.

Oh goodie, now I can frantically wait around for a new Sigur Ros album! Come to Philly boys, I'd give an arm and a leg to see you in concert!

i don't know, i finally watched susan boyle on youtube after hearing about it forever and i was less than impressed. nice voice, but it wasn't amazing, and not a lot of control. granted, she's old so maybe that has something to with it, but really, i think the only reason she was such a big deal for awhile was because of her unattractiveness. so i think that ends up being in her favor as far as that goes. really, really not that impressed. awesome she got to experience what she experienced though.
