Someone Dared To Cover Beyoncé's "Sorry," And...It's Pretty Rad

Every track on Beyoncé’s groundbreaking visual album Lemonade is individually strong, yet works so powerfully toward the whole narrative, that it’s impossible to totally consider them on their own. So covering a Lemonade track seems like a fool’s errand for any musician. Which is why I sneered when I saw Live Nation tweeting about Christine and the Queens’s cover of “Sorry.”

“I don’t know who this Christine and the Queens thinks she is,” I snitted internally, “But…”

With gritted teeth, I dared to hit play. And—hey, this is actually pretty damn great.

By blending the base of Bey’s “Sorry” with a heavy dose of French New Wave, this indie act created something curious and cool. It’s not better than Beyoncé’s. But hey, sometimes you feel like a decadent cake laced with icing, berries, and topped with ice cream. Sometimes you want Pop Rocks. Different flavors for different moods.

And well played, Christine and the Queens.

Bonus track, “Tilted.”

Kristy Puchko ain’t thinking ‘bout you.
