nylon.jpgUrbanOutfitters.com and Nylon.com are currently offering free summer mixtape downloads for a limited time. The UO mix includes songs from St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear and Au Revior Simone. The Nylon mix includes songs from Phoenix, Of Montreal and Passion Pit. Sorry Urban, but a couple of free songs aren’t going to make up for the fact that I wasted months of my life working for your soul-sucking company (But you better believe I immediately downloaded the shit out of that mixtape).

faithnomore.gifLast Thursday, Faith No More apparently played the first gig of their reunion tour in London, their first show together in almost 11 years. While original guitarist Jim Martin wasn’t present, King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime guitarist Jon Hudson was. The set apparently blew the doors off the place, complete with Mike Patton and Roddy Bottom singing a duet of Peaches and Herb’s classic cheeze-hit “Reunited” as the opener. And of course, I wasn’t there. Rage consumes me. Please, Patton and company, please please please tour in the U.S. I’m begging you.

kaurenhill87.jpgWe reported here that Lauryn Hill was going on tour in Europe this summer. It looks like she has cancelled all the tour dates, including Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, due to health reasons. No other details were released about these so-called “health problems” Hill is experiencing. Me thinks it has something to do with her brain though.

album-music-from-the-motion-picture-purple-rain.jpgSpin Magazine will be commemorating the 25th anniversary of Prince’s Purple Rain in their July issue. There will be comprehensive articles and interviews, an in-depth history, and most interestingly, a nine song track-for-track tribute album that will be entitled Purplish Rain. It will actually include Appololia collaborating on the cover of “When Doves Cry.” I might actually buy Spin Magazine for once, though really I’m mostly just floored by the fact that Purple Rain came out 25 years ago.

gagagaga.jpgIs Lady Gaga the new ultra pop star? Kanye West announced on The View last week that he will be co-headlining a tour with Lady Gaga later this year. She also just collaborated with Marilyn Manson on a remix of her song “LoveGame,” and worked on a Manson remix of a song off his new album The High End of Low. No further details of the West/Gaga tour have been released yet. I admit I don’t hate Lady Gaga, but I don’t love her either. I would be interested to see what this concert would bring though.

hynde.jpgWe mentioned here last week that The Pretenders were going on tour with Juliette Lewis and Cat Power. My heart skipped a beat when I read the headline in our local paper, but then considerably dropped when I heard the venue was at the Minnesota Zoo and that they were charging an exorbitant $68 per ticket. Firstly, the zoo is the dumbest place to hold a concert of that caliber. Although I have not been there myself, word is that the only seating at the outdoor amphitheater are long steel benches. Secondly it is out in the burbs, which is a total buzzkill. Thirdly, I’m not a fucking millionaire. $68?????(*&(@$^!)#*$! Anyway,it was reported in the Minneapolis Star Tribune today that the concert’s venue is changing possibly due to Chrissie Hynde’s viewpoints on animal rights. Hynde wrote to the zoo after hearing their petting zoo animals are sent to be slaughtered afterwards. The concert promoters and the zoo are saying the change in venue was a mutual decision based on a variety of reasons including high demand for tickets. I definitely smell a rat with that damn excuse because I’m pretty sure people aren’t too hyped to be paying 68 freaking dollars. For one freaking ticket!!!

Here’s your Monday Afternoon Playlist. Please to enjoy.

Felicia: I’m currently listening to The Kills’ 2008 album Midnight Boom. I’m still trying to figure out how I got the album, because I know I didn’t buy it. I swear it just appeared in my iTunes library one day. Regardless, I’m glad it magically appeared because it’s a diamond in the rough and I’m not sure why it took me so long to listen to it. Lead singer Alison Mosshart is currently heading up Jack White’s side project The Dead Weather. One of my favorites from the Midnight Boom album is “Cheap and Cheerful.”

TK: There’s no question in my mind that one of the best hip hop albums of the decade that didn’t come out of Minneapolis was Ghostface Killah’s Fishscale. One of my favorite tracks on that album is “Back Like That,” a smooth, brilliant track replete with finger snaps, slick bass grooves and Ne-Yo’s silky voice on the hook — all of which serves as a perfect compliment to Ghostface’s in-your-face Staten Island-accented vocal stylings. It’s great stuff.

Boo: Grizzley Bear, “Southern Point.” Whoa! I love this album, Veckatimist, so much more than I anticipated. This first track is a pitch-perfect combination of energized drums, jangly guitar and percussion, and summer road trip mix. I’ve got this album on repeat.

Chris: “Paper Dolls” by Hyder Ali is proof that not only does Minneapolis have the best local hip-hop scene in the country, but more specifically that up here we know that while the DJ is much respected, sometimes you can’t beat rhymes atop a live band. Atmospheric guitars and crisp percussion cascades underneath the rippling wordsmithery, making for a song as moving as it is groove-inducing.

Christian: Sufjan Stevens, “Demetrius” - For some reason, it’s taken me years to pick up indie-pop icon Sufjan Stevens’ A Sun Came!. Perhaps I was just under the impression that it would be like every other Stevens disc; fantastic, but not too different from anything else he’s written. Color me stunned; this darkly grungy rocker recalls Sunny Day Real Estate, a low-fi guitar hum and bare drums colliding under Stevens bizarre, even creepy vocals, layered with electronic textures that make it sound like he’s moaning underwater. Between this album and the song “You Are The Blood” (from the Dark Was The Night compilation), I’m starting to wonder how people so easily overlook Sufjan Stevens’ ability to be dark and experimental instead of being the constantly peppy Christian singer who you heard in the Little Miss Sunshine trailer.

Finally, this week the number one album spot goes to… The Dave Matthews Band, and their new, ridiculously titled Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Eminem is second, and 311 (who I really assumed were going to hang it up), Chickenfoot and Green Day follow. Chickenfoot. Sigh.

TK and Felicia bring you Music News each Monday, when they’re not spending their time as a costumed crimefighting duo.

Actually, I saw Ben Kweller open for Guster at the zoo (I was not there for Guster, believe you me). It's an AWESOME place to see a show. Especially if the weather is nice. The sound is great, the view is actually quite nice (behind the stage, it's all nature. Really beautiful).

Posted by: ChristianH at June 15, 2009 12:16 PM

But yeah those ticket prices are ridiculous. That's more than Rock The Garden ($60), a full-day festival with more, maybe better, acts.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 15, 2009 12:19 PM

Lauryn needs to take her sweet time and get all her mind grapes in order. I'll wait.

Posted by: jM at June 15, 2009 12:26 PM

I absolutely LOVE The Kills! Nice to see them mentioned here.
I'm with Christian, a zoo can be a great place for a show. The OKC Zoo Amphitheater hosts some great shows all summer long... but 68 bucks for one ticket which includes Juliette Lewis on the bill? Ummm... no.

Posted by: Spender at June 15, 2009 12:31 PM

Shit, yes, Christian, "You are the Blood" totally blew my mind. It was so incredible and unexpected. Also, I went out and bought a couple Castanets albums because of it!

25 Years! Fuck me I'm old.

Posted by: admin at June 15, 2009 12:39 PM

What's even crazier than Purple Rain being 25 years old is seeing the difference in how much popular music changed in the 25 year leading up to PR and how little has changed in the 25 years since.

25 years before Purple Rain the top songs/artists included Lonely Boy by Paul Anka, Dream Lover by Bobby Darin, and Turn Me Loose by Fabian. From there we went through Dylan, the Beatles, the Who and the Stones; Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Hendrix and Joplin; not to mention all of Staxx and MoTown. We saw the creation of folk-rock, psychedelic rock, acid rock, funk, soul, country rock, punk, new wave and disco - not to mention all of the stadium giants of the 70s from all genres. All of that (and more) mixed together by a tiny man from Minneapolis.

Since then we've had, what...grunge? A resurgence of some older styles (I'm looking at you jangle-pop)? Further mixing of existing genres (power-pop anyone)?

I realize that this argument marks me as a curmudgeonly old man and I also realize that there are plenty of great bands out there making great, original music. But, the main-stream has all but dried up.

FWIW, Jonas Brothers on the cover of ...

Good Housekeeping.

I s-bomb you not.

Says it all.

" Jonas Brothers on the cover of... Good Housekeeping."

Now that's some funny shit.

Sorry, I meant funny s-bomb.

Posted by: TK at June 15, 2009 12:53 PM

Sad to see there is another band called Chickenfoot out there. The original Chickenfoot (as far as I know) were two Ames, Iowa musicians that wrote, and recorded a 10-song masterpiece on an Amtrak train from Ames to the Pacific Northwest. It was pure genius.

My second comment is that after the Pretenders show, there was going to be an animal slaughter? And it was only gonna cost $68? I'll take 2!

Posted by: Jez at June 15, 2009 12:54 PM

Twenty five years, huh? Jesus. I got the album for Christmas one year, and the accompanying poster was a staple on my bedroom wall for about five...

FNM... Listen to TK. Please, please, please tour the U.S.

Who the fuck is Lady Gaga? I've been unfortunate enough to see one of her videos, but for the love of all that is holy, I can't seem to figure how she has taken the shitty shit music world by storm. Did she do something prior to this past year? Why is she one the cover of Rolling Stone? How can we stop her?

Posted by: Skitz at June 15, 2009 12:55 PM

Rock the Garden tickets were around 40 I think. The 60 came into play if you wanted to become an MPR member and a free ticket came with that. And the zoo is a total buzzkill for me. I'm a traditionalist, if I'm going to a rock show it needs to be somewhere where I can buy booze in enormous quantities and get my face rocked off. The zoo is no place for my antics.

Posted by: Felicia at June 15, 2009 12:57 PM

I was unaware that Dante Hicks was a member of Faith No More (second from the left).

Posted by: Court at June 15, 2009 12:57 PM

Okay, f-bomb the Zoo.
I wanna see rock shows with Felicia.

I think you underestimate the actual transformation of music over the last 25 years. Alternative rock music and indie, the growth of hip-hop and its mutation into the dominant musical genre, and that's not to mention the explosion of emo and screamo and hardcore teen rock. Of course, electronica has advanced and merged beautifully with existing genres, as evidenced by bands like Radiohead and TV on the Radio. And, I'm sorry, I've never enjoyed any Prince album I've ever listened to.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 15, 2009 1:14 PM

"And, I'm sorry, I've never enjoyed any Prince album I've ever listened to."

[head explodes]

You're dead to me.

Posted by: TK at June 15, 2009 1:18 PM

25 years???? Jesus. I blew my dad's stereo out twice on that album. He's never really forgiven me.

Posted by: Lee at June 15, 2009 1:21 PM

Prince...ChristianH...PRINCE?
Among the most brilliant artists/performers ever to grace us with his talent?
You weren't referring to Prince Rogers Nelson, right?
No?
*...whew...*
For a second there you were about to lose all credibility with me as a music writer!

Posted by: Spender at June 15, 2009 1:27 PM

Speaking of ticket prices, I was looking at going to some shows here in Austin at the Paramount (David Sedaris, John Waters, STOMP, stuff like that). All the tickets are near $250. Each!! I don't fucking get it!!! Every performance is like that. What. the. fuck?

Posted by: Sharon at June 15, 2009 1:39 PM

Kidding, ChristianH.
Just a gentle Pajiba-jibe at the young-un's around here.
Still, Prince is pretty f-bombing cool if you give his music a chance.

Posted by: Spender at June 15, 2009 2:07 PM

How in the . . . did Purple Rain really come out that long ago?
That shit held up, man. I think I'm gonna have to blast some Prince in my car today.

Posted by: Sharon at June 15, 2009 2:41 PM

I don't think I'm underestimating it at all ChristianH. Everything you mentioned, with the exception of Hip-Hop (which itself has become terribly stagnate lately) seems to me to be a variation on an existing theme (even electronica predates Purple Rain by a good 10 years) rather than the explosion of new themes found in 60s and 70s pop.

And again, I'm referring to (mostly) mainstream and popular music. There have always been fringe artists pushing the bounds of musical expression.

Oh, and I'm not trying to hold PR up as some monumental turning point. It just struck me that there had been far more innovation in the 25 preceding years than the 25 since.

Posted by: cmr at June 15, 2009 2:53 PM

25 Years! Fuck me I'm old.

What admin said. I remember making-out with my girlfriend at the theater during this movie, which was actually the only reason I agreed to go we went. I was a sophomore in high school.

Posted by: Rykker at June 15, 2009 3:10 PM

Yeah, $68 outside of a club is sadly not that high now, relatively.

Posted by: Jay at June 15, 2009 3:34 PM

ChristianH needs to purify himself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at June 15, 2009 3:59 PM

You are wrong, Felicia. The MN Zoo is an AWESOME place to be drunk. The snow monkeys are HILARIOUS.

I don't get it either. Who has this kind of money? The Stanley Cup playoffs just finished in the nearest big city to where I live so I happen to know that tickets to a game in the finals were $190 face. Again: Who has this kind of money? The unemployment rate's 10% and I thought we were all supposed to be financially f-bombed. Either SOMEbody is full of s-bomb, or the Democrats are right and we DON'T pay enough in taxes.

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at June 15, 2009 4:59 PM

Awesome, I'm getting show invites in different states now?? I'll be there with dried vomit on my shirt.

Christian!!! Them's is fightin' words!! Prince is as close to any type of God I'll ever believe in.

Jay, $68 IS a lot. Especially considering the venue and the supporting acts. And remember that this is MN, not L.A.

Tracer Bullet, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Posted by: Felicia at June 15, 2009 6:08 PM

Trust the old man on this. Especially when dealing with aging bands like this.

Posted by: Jay at June 15, 2009 6:13 PM

Just going to throw this out there: $68 US equates to $86.10 Aussie dollars. A few years back, Juliette Lewis and the Licks were in Oz. To see them, you had to fork up the equivalent of $102.70 US dollars. Consider yourselves lucky you cheap bastards!

Posted by: Seraf at June 15, 2009 9:18 PM

I'm feeling the Ghostface love, TK. My personal fave off that (great) album has got to be 'The Champ'. I think that's the one where he threatens to cut someone (a male) up "...like a histerectomy".

Oh yeah, Faith No More reunion. Didn't they split up because they hate each other's guts? Oh well, I hope that they make some serious dough and that Rodney Bottom (sic?) continues his jizzlobing ways way into senility...these guys deserve it for 'Angel Dust' alone!!

Posted by: Pancho Ramone at June 15, 2009 10:26 PM

What is it?

It's it.

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at June 15, 2009 11:24 PM

Aww man - 25 years since Purple Rain! That was my first "big girl" tape ever. I played the hell out of that bad boy. Still love it, it's a true classic. Regardless of how wacked out Prince can be, the guy's a musical genius - even if Purple Rain was the only thing he ever released. And c'mon - how can you *not* like "Darlin' Nikki?" (And no, as a tender 8 year old, I didn't "get it" until later, then got a huge kick out of the fact that I was actually allowed to get that album at that age!)

I think we should *all* purify ourselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. :D

Posted by: luthien26 at June 16, 2009 7:18 AM

Regardless of how wacked out Prince can be, the guy's a musical genius - even if Purple Rain was the only thing he ever released.

Did you mean that as a hypothetical? That he is a genius even if Purple Rain is the only album one were to consider?

Or perhaps you just aren't aware of his other albums; one [among many] being his break-through 1999, released in '82.

Posted by: Rykker at June 16, 2009 9:17 AM

Now I'm thinking about to go to FNM's show tonight and to tell everyone here how awesome it was tomorrow. Just to torture you a bit.

Posted by: FabMax at June 16, 2009 9:48 AM

Just as long as FNM doesn't do any of that weird shit that Patton likes to do...

TK that's for you, big guy.

Posted by: Eep at June 16, 2009 12:46 PM

Rykker -whoops, I needed to clarify that - yep, it was a hypothetical statement. :) I meant that even if that had been the only thing Prince ever released in his career, that one album would have been enough to cement his rep as a musical genius.:)

You're right, he did a bunch of great stuff both before and after "Purple Rain." "Sign O' the Times" is a bonafide classic, and I can't help but love "Diamonds and Pearls." Saw him live a few years back and it kicked my ass in the best way. That guy's freakishly talented.:)

Posted by: luthien26 at June 16, 2009 1:32 PM

I take offense at the notion that the Minneapolis suburbs are a "total buzzkill." It's not that far south and the zoo is actually an okay venue. It's not First Ave, but nothing is, really.
