Oh to be in the room when this Portland-based band made entirely of white dudes came up with the name “Black Pussy.”

‘We want something that’ll grab people’s attentions. Make them stand up and take notice. Right?’

Mission accomplished you oblivious, entitled douchebags.

The band’s name has caused a great deal of outcry from those who (understandably) see the name as racist and mysoginistic. You know, because to take back a negative word or image, it should have anything to do with you first. So, the band’s guitarists Ryan McIntire and Dustin Hill have defended themselves in an interview with Williamette Week (via Daily Life). Here’s a long list of the ways you just don’t get them.

“[The name Black Pussy is meant to sound] sexy and ’70s.”

“It’s very Tarantino-influenced. If he was going to have a band or make a movie about a band, it’d be called Black Pussy.”

“I sit in a very isolated spot compared to [the rest of] humanity. Words do not offend me.”

“I’m not going to change the name because I’m afraid it’ll hurt my project. I’ve committed to it, because that’s what artists do: They commit to an idea. It’s not about trying to be successful or trying to make money, it’s about the idea. We build on the idea, and if it fails, it fails. But I’m not going to change it because a tiny percentage of the population has an issue with it.”

“It’s a celebration of freedom. There’s no negativity with what we’re trying to do.”

“Hill says if anyone has a problem with the name, he’ll hear them out, and would even consider changing it if the argument was persuasive enough. He’s yet to be convinced.”

Now before you go to comments with “freedom of speech” and all that, we’re not thought police telling these guys they can’t call their band what they want. We’re just could-have-been fans who are saying that words have power. That America has a history of exploitation of black people, women, and yes black women. And to ignore that so you can feel “sexy” and Tarantino-like is shitty.

The members of this stupid band can call themselves whatever they like. They can even publicly complain how the name has been an obstacle, as some venues won’t let them play there. (Oh the adversity they face!) And we can call them entitled asshats for it.

Kristy Puchko can’t even sometimes.
