Let's Go Out to the Lobby, and Grab Ourselves a Snack!

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Our very own Manny, Eloquent Extraordinaire, suggested today’s comment diversion, asking what are your favorite movie recipes. “By movie recipes, I mean concoctions they put together to munch on whilst enjoying said entertainment.”

Personally, as a terribly superstitious person, I always have a Cherry Icee with my movie, usually with nothing else. I fear that if I ever stop ordering them, my ability to write reviews will completely dry up. Manny’s movie recipes are a lot more entertaining:

“1. Gummi bears mixed with Pepsi/Coke - the soda eats off the outer Gummi skin, leaving a gooey, vaguely bear shaped substance behind. Plus, it gives the soda a nice, fruity flavor. It’s a win-win…unless you’re my teeth, then it’s more like, “Ahhhh! It burns ussss!”!

“2. Sour Patch Kids and Fruit Punch - again with the dissolving of the outer skin and sour crystals, but the kids don’t get as gooey as the bears, so they’re a lot easier to grab and consume.

“3. And the ultimate movie snack… Red Vines as soda straws! The soda eats away at the inner lining of the “straw”, slowly turning Pepsi into Cherry Pepsi, or what have you. And once the straw is too corroded to continue, you simply remove it, consume, and replace it with a new one. Kind of like a wife.”

So, we pass the question off to you: What do you like to wash down with your viewing experience?

Goobers and Raisinettes!

In fact, my family has so much love for this combination, we wrote a song about it:

Goobers and Raisinettes
Goobers and Raisinettes

Goobers are delicious
boogers covered with chocolate!

Raisinettes are raisins
covered with chocolate poooooo!

Yeah. We are strange, strange people.

Yuck Manny, just...yuck.

I go for the nachos with jalapenos, rasinets, and whatever diet soda's available. I'm just not that, um, creative, I guess.

Posted by: frumpiefox at May 7, 2008 2:52 PM

I'm a fan of mixing my raisinettes with my popcorn. mmmh tasty salty popcorn and deeeelicious sweet, chocolatey goodness all in one handful.

I also always sneak my own water bottle into movies cause that whole $5 for H2O is a rip off.

Junior Mints and Reese's Pieces

Posted by: Kstar at May 7, 2008 2:54 PM

I sit on my box of milkduds for a few minutes, not enough to compress them, but just enough to make them soft. Then, I grab a few pieces of popcorn with butter and salt and mash em together. Large diet coke, extra ice to wash this down.

I like manny's idea with the sour patch kids. Something about stabbing my straw through the chest cavity of slowly dissolving children at the bottom of a tub of weak acid seems...comforting.

Posted by: PissBoy at May 7, 2008 2:54 PM

I was so happy, because I got in on a comment diversion before the first hundred comments, but now I'm kind of sad because I never mix stuff together when I see movies. I'm more of a snacks purist. It's usually just root beer or an Icee, occasionally popcorn for tradition's sake (I sort of hate popcorn), maybe nachos every now and then.
Sidenote: I used to use Twizzlers as a soda straw all the time when I was a kid.

Posted by: Cait at May 7, 2008 2:54 PM

I'm a huge fan of Milk Duds and Cherry Coke. Cherry Coke tastes like childhood (and I know this because I subsist on the happiness of children), and Milk Duds tend to keep me from talking during the movie. Though I do manage to make the snarky comment from time to time, I swear in my past life I was Tom Servo.

If I'm feeling saucy, Sno Caps are the voluptuous candy of choice. They're so good I could shove them down my pants.

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 2:57 PM

If we're talking at the actual cinema, then my movie munching habits are rather dull. It's usually popcorn with the fake butter topping and a soda (Coke or rootbeer). Sometimes I'll get nachos. Every once in awhile if I'm feeling rich/extra munchy I'll get some sweetarts or nerds. My favorite, though it's hard to pull off because it involves combining two items from the concession stand, is popcorn dipped in nacho cheese sauce.

Of course, all of this depends on me not feeling annoyed at the exorbitant snack prices. And I know that this is how movie theatres actually make their money, which is why I usually get something when I go to an independent theatre.

Posted by: tamatha at May 7, 2008 2:57 PM

On the rare occasions that I go to the movies, I like just a Coke and nothing else. I've already made my opinions about popcorn clear. I actually would like to institute a food ban in theaters, because I am a big ole' crankypants who doesn't like to hear people eating/spilling their drinks.

Which is all part of why I don't go to the movies anymore. That and the whole "despising the rest of the human race" thing.

At home I eat whatever the fuck I want to.

Posted by: TK at May 7, 2008 2:58 PM

Oh man. I have to have Whoppers when I watch movies. I have simple but specific tastes.

Posted by: Trouble at May 7, 2008 2:59 PM

Movie recipes, you say?

At home, simple: nicotene and booze. Or the previous night's chinese food and booze. Cheap-ass, greasy pizza and booze is also dynamite. A kick-ass grilled burger with booze is pretty good as well. Oh, and can't forget booze mixed with booze. Yum-O!

At the theater, I'm pretty simple: Nibs/Twizzlers with a giant iced tea; Sour Patch Kids with lemonade; or Milk Duds with super buttery/salty popcorn. I used to take my own popcorn to be cheaper, but there's just something about that slippery goodness of theater corn. Can't do beer - I've got the bladder of a fetus.

Nod to the Sour Patch Kids - has anyone ever eaten so many it actually hurts to try and brush your teeth? Sweet Christ, that's painsville...

Posted by: Skitmus Maximus at May 7, 2008 3:00 PM

This is such a bizarre and highly specific comment diversion. I never eat snacks at the movies - high fructose corn syrup makes my teeth (and brain, after reading The Omnivore's Dilemma) hurt, and that shit costs too much anyway.

Posted by: AM at May 7, 2008 3:00 PM

i like the kid's meal--you get a smallish soda, mini popcorn, and usually m & m's or reese's pieces. then, you mix the candy with the popcorn, and it's delicious. plus it's usually cheap. but not as cheap as sneaking in an empanada in my purse.

Posted by: mamazao at May 7, 2008 3:00 PM

Junior Mints and Popcorn, lightly buttered. A regular Coke to wash it down. There's something about the combo of chocolatey-mint and buttery-salt that makes me all nostalgic for my younger years.

Posted by: val at May 7, 2008 3:00 PM

Generally, I like popcorn with butter and a cherry coke.

Pissboy , if you like Milk Duds you'll love this:
Best combo= Popcorn + Peanut Butter M&Ms

Eat simultaneously, not mixed together.

Enjoy, Amanda

Posted by: Amanda47 at May 7, 2008 3:01 PM

A personal favorite, the combination of sweet and savory. Thus....one bag of popcorn mixed liberally with one bag of chocolate m&ms or smarties. Shake and toss. Delish.

Posted by: Danae at May 7, 2008 3:01 PM

Popcorn with lots of butter. Then dump a bag of M&Ms or Reese's Pieces on top, and yummy salty sweet goodness ensues!
Wash down with a Jack&Coke Slushee! It's not even that good, but I get tricked every time. Every time, I'm like, bourbon Slushee! Yes! but there's really not enough Jack in there. I've learned to bring my flask.

Posted by: isabelle at May 7, 2008 3:01 PM

Raisinettes were my candy choice as a kid. Now, I mostly find the milk chocolate too sweet. The idea of mixing it with the popcorn does sound a bit tempting though.

On a side note: a few years ago, the Main Squeeze gave me some dark-chocolate-covered cranberries for Christmas and I loved them so much, I kept saying, "they're the new Raisinette!"

Posted by: tamatha at May 7, 2008 3:02 PM

I also should have mentioned that frequently some sort of Nip goes in my Coca Cola at the movie theater.

Posted by: TK at May 7, 2008 3:02 PM

Ginger beer and Swedish Fish. Bonus points if they're actually Swedish Aqua Life- the blue flavor is awesome and tongue-dyeing.
Also, I love Reese's Pieces, but never think to get them any time other than when I'm watching a movie.

Posted by: Rachel at May 7, 2008 3:04 PM

My 7-11 (yes it's mine, it's 100 yards from my building and I must have paid for the slurpee machine by now) has sour straws for the slurpees, kind of like a sour patch kid straw. Messy and delicious...the sugar king of awesome!!

Posted by: Amanda47 at May 7, 2008 3:04 PM

M&Ms. Always. Sometimes I'll eat a couple handfuls of someone else's popcorn before remembering that I don't like popcorn, and sometimes I'll pay $4 for glorified sugar water, but I NEED my M&Ms.

Although I'm thinking about mixing skittles and pepsi together now, since last summer I got this "tropical mix" pepsi that tasted like they melted skittles into. I considered this a good thing, other people disagreed with me.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at May 7, 2008 3:04 PM

TK, I thought you meant Nip as in the candy and thought "Wow, what a delightful weirdo."

At home I prefer take-out Thai food and either red wine or Sea Dog Blueberry Wheat Ale.

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 3:05 PM

Tip: It doesn't have to be something you would normally get at a movie theatre. Anything you enjoy eating/drinking/rubbing on your chest while your enjoying a movie will do.

Here are a couple more confections I forgot about

1. Beer and chocolate: Who doesn't enjoy a frosty brew with their Fellini and some milk chocolate with your Frank Miller? w00t!

2. Nerd Ropes: Sometimes I'll see how many Nerds I have left on the string at the end of the movie. If there are too many, then I probably didn't enjoy the movie enough to distract me from the Nerd consumption.

Posted by: Manny at May 7, 2008 3:05 PM

Heh, it's funny how many comments are about mixing candy with popcorn. Most of my friends think I'm weird when I do this.
Pajiba is my people.

Posted by: isabelle at May 7, 2008 3:06 PM

The primo combination is buttery popcorn and snowcaps. That's pretty much my one and only favorite, everything else I eat separately.

Posted by: Sally at May 7, 2008 3:07 PM

Amanda47 as I was reading about other people getting Slushees/Icees at the movies, it made me wish that the theatres near me had Slurpees--cola ones--as I would love one of those during a movie. Mmm, cola Slurpee.

Posted by: tamatha at May 7, 2008 3:08 PM

At the hizzy - beer and popcorn.

At the theater - buy a big ol' popcorn and a big ol' coke and, if I'm feeling ballsy enough, a flask of Southern Comfort or Captain Morgan to pour in it.

Posted by: Mattfactor at May 7, 2008 3:08 PM

BOOZE! Anything I can sneak in. Plus Reese's Pieces, if they have them.

Posted by: socalledonlycousins at May 7, 2008 3:09 PM

Milk duds in my popcorn. Over time they soften and get all salty and buttery. It's as close to Heaven as I'm ever going to get.

Posted by: jayco at May 7, 2008 3:09 PM

I feel so unoriginal! I tend to try to tailor my candy selection to the movie (ie, Twizzlers for teen movies, Junior Mints for Comedies, Milk Duds for movies that my friends want to see but I really don't). I may be changing my ways after this Diversion, though. You Pajibans are brilliant.

Posted by: LB at May 7, 2008 3:10 PM

I made the mistake of bringing a goddamed Chipolte burrito and a flask to one of the LOTR installments... I made it through about a third of the film before sleep done gone and knocked me on the back of the skull with a sock fulla quarters.

EAT MEALS AFTER THE MOVIE!

tamatha, were them berries by any chance from the Harry & David catalog? If so, I could live off those and Slim-Jims for the rest of my life...

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at May 7, 2008 3:12 PM

Good call, Socalled. I knew there was a reason I hadn't called for your death. Anything made by Reese's is absolutely glorious.

Posted by: TK at May 7, 2008 3:13 PM

I like popcorn with a LOT of salt and mustard. you take the little mustard packets and squeeze a little on each piece. then consume! The weird thing is I HATE mustard on anything else.

Posted by: melissa at May 7, 2008 3:14 PM

I rarely eat at movies but when the mood strikes- extra butter and salt on my large popcorn (go big or go home, I always say) and peanut M&Ms. I balance it out with a snuck in water bottle (no more alcoholic brew for this Pajibaholic).

I used to work at a well known movie theater and I can assure you the $$ the theater pays for candy inventory is highway robbery. Don't feel bad to sneak in your own food...I do it all the time!!

Posted by: Be Adequite! at May 7, 2008 3:14 PM

Junior mints and a bottle of water. When our new theater opened they didn't sell junior mints and I had to resort to smuggling them in. How that building did not get struck by lightning for such an offense I do not know. They sell them now but only the small box. I prefer the huge box that says "servings:4" and I'm lucky if it lasts me through the previews.

Posted by: shelleyh at May 7, 2008 3:15 PM

I haven't been to a theater in ages; but when I used to go the place we went (AMC Grand, and yes, it actually is) had a pump-your-own station for the popcorn. I abused that thing like I was three years old, drowning my popcorn in ersatz butter-flavored grease. I am aware that the moviehouse butter topping contains no butter; actually, I suspect that it contains no natural ingredients whatsoever. It has a petrochemical undertone...mmmmmmm...

And I'm not superstitious, but I luuuuuv washing that uber-lubricated popcorn down with a Cherry Iceeā„¢. I have to nurse it, though, and make it last, or else I have to run to the ladies' in the middle of the movie.

Posted by: Jerce at May 7, 2008 3:15 PM

I can't stand paying the prices at the theater, so I too sneak my water bottle in my purse. If I do get something, definitely some popcorn with a little butter. Salt is my friend. For sweets, I usually smuggle in whatever chocolate I have around the house.

At home, I really like some red wine and some chocolate. If it's the afternoon, Triscuits and some white american cheese (not Kraft) is pretty sweet.

Posted by: jillster85 at May 7, 2008 3:16 PM

Skitt actually, no. They were from a local chocolate shop from where his folks live. In fact, it was a pleasant surprise, as a lot of the stuff from that shop has been disappointing, but these were delicious! I'm sure the Harry & David ones are wonderful, as so many items in that catalogue look incredibly tempting.

Weirdly, one of the things I miss as a vegetarian is Slim Jims. The veg versions of those things (or at least most veg versions of jerky) are simply inedible, in my opinion.

Posted by: tamatha at May 7, 2008 3:18 PM

Now I'm completely fascinated by the whole mixing Milk Duds with popcorn concept...why haven't I tried this before?! When I finally see Iron Man I'm totally eating that.

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 3:18 PM

Sweet Tarts and a diet coke. Nothing exciting over here.

Posted by: Krixsie at May 7, 2008 3:18 PM

The jizz that the dude has just shot up my shit encrusted butthole that I have just shat out mixed with the shit and blood and butthole juices, spread on garlic bread, covered with slices of limberger cheese and then heated on a hot plate inside the actual theater. Then I walk around with a flashlight taking bites and showing the other patrons what I'm eating and chewing on.

Posted by: Trevor Valle aka: Saint Nightwalker at May 7, 2008 3:19 PM

I try not to eat or drink too much, unless I want to miss half the movie while I'm peeing my brains out in the ladies' room. When I'm feeling brave, I like popcorn (NO extra butter), Junior Mints, or Reese's Pieces.

TK & socalled - a coworker told me yesterday she hates both Reese's Pieces AND Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I think she's mentally ill.

Posted by: Kolby at May 7, 2008 3:23 PM

At the theater I usually don't get anything because I am cheap. If I do it is the classic Coke and popcorn, extra butter.

At home I really like to eat these chicken empanadas that I get at Trader Joe's. They are so tasty!

Posted by: Erin at May 7, 2008 3:24 PM

First time commenting, but as a food whore I could not pass this up.

My current favorite is sneaking in pork belly sandwiches from a neighborhood restaurant.

But my go-to is the salty sweet combo that seems popular here: peanut M&Ms and buttered, salted popcorn mixed together. Yum.

Posted by: Sandra at May 7, 2008 3:25 PM

At home--take a jar of peanut butter, add a layer of chocolate chips to the top, scrape with a spoon. Repeat.

Posted by: frumpiefox at May 7, 2008 3:27 PM

Erin, Trader Joes empanadas are the fucking balls. Good choice.

Kolby, I want you to stop associating with that person. Clearly there is something wrong with them, and I fear for your safety.

Posted by: TK at May 7, 2008 3:28 PM

I also enjoy mixing my m&ms with popcorn. It is actually the only way I will eat popcorn.

Cherry coke all the way for the drink and usually someone in the group brings a flask of goodness to enjoy.

Otherwise my favorite movie treat is to smuggle in corn muffins from the restaurant a block away from the theater. They are AMAZING in any setting.

Posted by: jmurae at May 7, 2008 3:29 PM

I'm in the Milk Duds dumped in the bag of popcorn camp. Indie theaters often have real butter, and that makes it even better.

Posted by: lunabelle at May 7, 2008 3:31 PM

frumpiefox - try this: Take a ripe banana, split the peel open on the shorter side only, cutting into the banana but not all the way through. Spread peanut butter inside the banana, fill with chocolate chips. Wrap banana in foil and bake in the oven until warm & gooey. I like to serve the banana, sans peel, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Posted by: Kolby at May 7, 2008 3:34 PM

I'm a cheapster like others here, smuggling in food. in fact, I often change pocketbooks so that I can get a bottle of water plus a snack into the theater.

That being said, the kids "meals" are great for my kids - just enough popcorn to share with me, and enough candy to keep them away from the $10 humongo sizes sold at the snack bar.

Posted by: mswas at May 7, 2008 3:34 PM

I used to work at a movie theater, many moons ago and loved to put the jalapeno juice on my popcorn. Yum. Only thing movie nachos are good for, IMHO. Now I get a courtesy cup filled with that yellow popcorn salt and commence to dump it all over my (small) popcorn. Mmm...hypertension....

At home, it used to be tater tots and chardonnay. Now, it's generally some sort of Japanese snack product. Oh, and rum. Good, sippin' rum.

Posted by: SugarKane at May 7, 2008 3:35 PM

At the movies-whatever I sneak in my bag

At home-popcorn and m&ms

Posted by: anikitty at May 7, 2008 3:35 PM

In junior high, my friends and I used to always eat the 5 basic food groups: easy cheese with triscuits, twizzlers, soft batch chocolate chip cookies, mountain dew, and microwabe popcorn. Ever movie, we bought all of that stuff. So gross and yet so awesome.

In college, my friends and I used to have a similar theme, but less organized. It was basically "everybody pick up junk food and bring it to movie night" - and we'd always order Papa John's. Soft batch cookies were always still involved, though.

Nowadays, I like a glass of wine and popcorn (kettle corn variety) if I'm at home, or popcorn and raisinettes if I'm at the movies. I like popcorn A LOT.

Posted by: tt_marie at May 7, 2008 3:39 PM

Kolby--that sounds awesome, and I don't even like bananas!

Reminds me of this one: Take wedges of apple, add small slice of cheddar and a sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar, wrap in buscuit dough, bake 'til golden. Kind of like a dessert pig-in-a-blanket.

Posted by: frumpiefox at May 7, 2008 3:41 PM

Large Nachos and a Large Coke. I know I might as well be eating melted plastic, but I don't give a shit. That's how I roll.

Posted by: Jason at May 7, 2008 3:42 PM

I grew up in Ohio, with a movie theater that cost $3.50 for tickets (it has since gone up to 6 dollars). Now I live in New York City were the tickets are 11 dollars. The price has forced me to resort to what I like to call Triple Features--I'll buy a ticket for one movie and then sneak into two more. It takes careful planning, figuring out which movies to see at what time. It also changes snack habits.

For the first movie I stick to popcorn and soda, classic combo that helps set the mood for the rest of the adventure.

However the second movie changes things up. Movie theater popcorn gives me a headache if I consume more than one bucket (too much salt/fake butter). Also, you need to keep in mind the duration of a Triple Feature day, it's generally 6-7 hours stuck in a movie theater, one should be prepared. For the second show I'll sneak in a salad and/or sandwich, a bag of baby carrots, a bottle of water and/or some Vitamin Water. Sneaking in food is essential so that the snack people don't recognize you, also the whole point of a triple feature is to save money.

Third movie is generally when you start to drag and forget what sunshine looks like. For the last movie energy boost I usually go with sugar--sour patch kids, sweet tarts and Advil (they're coated with candy!). I usually just refill my water bottle, but if the theater has it, I might get a cup of coffee.

It ends up being a long day, and a complicated process (wear layers so you can change up your appearance so ushers won't immediately recognize you) but in the end, you save 20 dollars which is consequently blown at a bar getting the alcohol you need to recover from being a movie theater all day.

soft batch chocolate chip cookies

Aw, tt_marie, that reminds me of my drama club days in high school. There was a WaWa (the best convenience store in the world for all you non East Coast folk) behind our high school and we LIVED on boxes of Entemanns soft batch chocolate chip cookies and WaWa brand iced tea.

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 3:43 PM

Ah, sorry for the 10 bagillion typos in that last comment. I'm ashamed.

Oh, one other thing: I have a friend who loves jujifruit and must, MUST eat it with every movie even if it means smuggling it in or traveling to fifty gas stations and drug stores to find some. I've pointed out that Dots are sort of like Jugifruit/Jujifruit/however you spell it, and are always available, but he'll have none of it. Jujifruit or die.

Posted by: tt_marie at May 7, 2008 3:44 PM

At home: Definitely beer and pizza

At the movies: depends on the movie, but the damn movie snacks are too friggin' expensive, and they generally all suck (I can't eat popcorn--makes me sick, the nachos ALWAYS suck, the pretzels generally suck, and the candy has been there since Christ was in Huggies) so I sneak my own shit in.

Lately, it's been Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper and, if I can find 'em, Mallow Cups. Mmmmmmm, ewwwy goooey marshmallowey goodness with melty chocolate and little teeny tiny bits of coconut. *sigh* or Sprees......Oh, and the Cherry Vanilla hides the Vanilla Skye vodka better.

Oh, and for all you popcorn-cheese-dippers...my kids totally do that every time we go to a movie. I don't get it. But, they make me buy this hot-n-spicy popcorn crap for them, too.

Posted by: dammitjanet at May 7, 2008 3:45 PM

frumpie - I am going to make that. I have to have it.

TK - would you mind explaining again just what it is you have against popcorn. I know we've talked about this before, but I think I blocked it from memory because it was just. that. crazy.

Posted by: Kolby at May 7, 2008 3:48 PM

I default to Jimmy Buffet: I want Junior Mints! Junior Mints! I also like to get popcorn with a FUCKLOAD of butter on it, but I'm allergic to corn, so I can only get a small. But I try not to get a drink in the theater, because I always have to pee and then I miss some of the movie.

At home, I like pizza and booze.

Posted by: Cady at May 7, 2008 3:49 PM

If it is Halloween time and I have access to the them, then I like to mix candy corn with salty peanuts. Yum. Any other time, it's Junior Mints all the way. At home, it's whatever the fuck I wanna eat while I'm watchin' a movie.

Posted by: Dangle McGee at May 7, 2008 3:49 PM

Oh frumpiefox, that sounds fabulous!

Reminds me of my grandma's old saying when she serves her apple pie, with the requisite slice of cheddar: "Apple pie without the cheese is like a hug without the squeeze". I love my grammie!

Posted by: MO at May 7, 2008 3:50 PM

Gotta have gummi bears. If I do not have fruit flavored gummi something, I cannot watch a movie.

As a child: Nachos, hot dog(moviehouse hot dogs are the shit), Coke or Rootbeer, rasinettes and gummi bears.

As an adult: Gummi bears and water.

snocaps in my popcorn. i usually just drink water because i'm a girl. calories, you know.

Posted by: kb at May 7, 2008 3:53 PM

I forgot about nachos. I love them so much I want to marry them, but I try to stay away whenever I can conjure up a shred of self-control. Because a tub of popcorn + a tray of nachos = more than any 5'3 girl should consume in one sitting.

So, anyway, if I break down and get nachos, I let about 4-5 chips sit in the cheese for a good minute or so until they get all soggy and floppy and cheese-saturated. Then, I eat those chips and dunk 4-5 new ones and let the cheese absorption process begin anew. Mmmm...soggy nachos. Anybody else do that?

Posted by: tt_marie at May 7, 2008 3:58 PM

The local pub theaters are about all I go to anymore, so for me it's always a bottle of wine and a slice of pizza. But I do share the wine with the Mr. We've done the bottle each during the movie a couple of times before, and it doesn't make for good movie remembering the next day.

Posted by: katy at May 7, 2008 3:59 PM

I have this weird thing for movie theater nachos. Just like you don't do "steak" jerky when you're in the mood for steak, one eats movie theater nachos only when one is in the very specific mood for stale (but warm) tortilla chips and melted corn-syrup solids, as opposed to actual cheese and decent toppings.

And you're in a movie theater. It doesn't work anywhere else.

Posted by: richbachelor at May 7, 2008 4:01 PM

Popcorn with a liberal side of Junior Mints mixed in. Washed down with one of those obscenely huge "small" cups of Diet Coke.

Mr. Pink always gets dibs to the first layer of popcorn so he can enjoy that vomitous butter-flavored oil and popcorn salt he loved so much.

Fuck. I so need to get out of the hospital so I can go see a movie.

Peanut M&M + Popcorn or Sour Patch Kids or Swedish Fish...

I'm the resident cook of the family, so usually if I got out with a family member, they tell me to bake something and bring it so we don't have to pay. To date, I've smuggled cupcakes, cookies, and (sorry Sarina Darling) a pie into the movies without so much as a second look. My crowning achievement is the time I smuggled in mini-soufflees without letting them deflate.

Posted by: Jeremy at May 7, 2008 4:06 PM

A small popcorn w/ butter & the sprinkle on fake cheese, a Sprite and a box of Whoppers. It's not really a movie experience without Whoppers.

Posted by: Brie at May 7, 2008 4:06 PM

Popcorn and M&M Minis mixed together. So good.

Posted by: Snath at May 7, 2008 4:06 PM

Kolby, please pay attention this time: Popcorn, while tolerable in taste, is evil. It is evil because it gets jammed between your teeth, feeling like someone is sticking wet fingernails in your mouth. Even worse is when it gets stuck to the back of your tongue. Finally, in movie theaters it is particularly unacceptable, what with the chewing and chomping and crunching and rattling of the paper bag and spilling and JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Movie theaters should only serve quiet foods. Like cotton candy. Or nothing. Nothing would be preferable.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if theaters served whatever they want... if they banned people*. Then it would be paradise.

DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, SMARTY FUCKING PANTS KOLBY?!?!?!?!

Is there movie-theater popcorn worth eating? I can't stand the stuff, and I think it's the change in oils--not just that I may have been less choosy as a small child. But even "popcorn movies" aren't enough to get me to buy popcorn in the theater any more.

But more and more I don't like the whole theater experience. I used to love it, but not now that people think it's their living room. Or their phone booth. Yes, I can see your text message from across the theater! And thus we rarely go to the movies. Why pay so much for such an annoying experience?

It's official. I'm a cranky old lady.

I can't believe how many people put m&ms in their popcorn. People think I'm a nut when I do this.
Ideally, I use microwave popcorn at home (I'm generally afraid of the movie theater kind but give in if I haven't planned ahead) and add peanut m&ms while the popcorn is still hot (another problem with movie theater popcorn - half the time it is stale and rarely hot). This softens the chocolate inside but those magical m&ms do not melt in your hand! I will put this in a ziplock bag and sneak it into the theater in my purse or enjoy it on my couch. The new dark chocolate peanut m&ms make it even tastier. There is something about the combo of chocolate and salt and the crunch of the peanut that makes it the perfect snack.

Circus peanuts (slightly stale) and grape gator-aid. Junior mints. Almond m&m's. I remember going to see the first Batman as a teen, sneaking in the theater with a large pizza and bottles of diet coke in my purse. good times.

Posted by: MystTeree at May 7, 2008 4:15 PM

Jr. Mints in my popcorn. OR, jalapenos in my popcorn. It's very important that you recognize the "OR" and realize that it's not "AND." They're both great additions to the salty mess, but which one depends on your mood and the movie.

Posted by: Jason at May 7, 2008 4:17 PM

TK - it's the texture, not the taste! It's all coming back to me now. And it's just as painful. You poor thing. I do love me some cotton candy, though.

We should do a comment diversion on favorite sports-watchin' foods. Mine would have to be, in no particular order: Hot dogs with kraut & mustard, roasted peanuts and cotton candy. Preferably served in a baseball stadium.

Generally when watching movies at home I wash down a freshly aborted fetus with a Big Gulp of nun's blood, but when I go to the theater I have to bow down to gubernatorial gods who have decided that fucking hookers is a wholesome activity becoming the leader of the state but that, for some unconscionable reason, removing a woman's unborn child with your bare hands and a rusty wire hanger and then puncturing the jugular of the local Mother Superior to soak my gullet is wrong. At least, in public. So I just get a fucking huge box of sour patch kids.

Posted by: fringecamp at May 7, 2008 4:24 PM

Standard: popcorn and a Coke (or sometimes just water)
When I'm feeling adventurous: Sour Patch Kids + Swedish Fish + Coke
On crazy days, a burger and fries and, you guessed it, a Coke.

Though sometimes, recently, it's root beer.

Posted by: elisamaza at May 7, 2008 4:25 PM

Swedish fish. You do not mix them with anything. They are perfect in their swefishy form.

Posted by: frogirl1978 at May 7, 2008 4:27 PM

tt_marie I don't object to a cheese-soaked nacho, but I don't do it intentionally. This reminds me of my (supposedly weird) preference for soft McDonald's fries. I swear you used to get more of these mixed in with the crispy ones when I was a kid; now if I get just one soft fry in a batch, I feel lucky.

MO--Grandmas are awesome. Well, one of mine was Jabba the Hutt, the other one was awesome....

The awesome one used to cook sugar and puffed wheats into a treat for my cousins and me. Gawd, that we didn't all become diabetics at 8 years is a miracle.

Posted by: frumpiefox at May 7, 2008 4:29 PM

Can't stand? Crinkly and rattling shit. Please make sure all of bags/boxes are opened fully by the time the last preview rolls. Listening to the twat in front of me struggle for a good twenty seconds to remove a fuzed Twizzler from the pouch is an immediate "accidental" knee to the back of the skull. That goes for popcorn too - have them fill the bag quarter-to-halfway so you can season as desired, then top the bag/bucket off and repeat. No one needs to hear you shaking your popcorn every other bite. That equals an elbow in your crotch when I have an "accidental" stumble on my way to the can.

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at May 7, 2008 4:30 PM

I am all about popcorn with either Milk Duds or Raisinets mixed in. And a giant Coke or Pepsi, depending on which movie theater I'm at.

My best friend and I are planning on doing our first "sneak booze into the theater" excursion this winter, when we go see Twilight together (because we're both pathetically addicted to the books, and rum-and-cokes might make the movie less awful).

Posted by: That Girl at May 7, 2008 4:31 PM

Salty and sweet = stoner treat. Warm, salty, buttery popcorn mixed with milk duds has to be the best stoner and/or movie food ever. (*sigh* I kinda miss smoking dope.)

Oh Julie, my friend in Levittown in Bucks County calls it THE WaWa which always made me chuckle.

Brigette! Levittown/Fairless hills is where my high school is located. (I'm from Bucks) :p

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 4:32 PM

Which is all part of why I don't go to the movies anymore. That and the whole "despising the rest of the human race" thing.

At home I eat whatever the fuck I want to.

tk, are you of the male persuasion? i feel that we may be soulmates.

Posted by: amy at May 7, 2008 4:33 PM

Skitt, next time I go to the movie theater I'm bringing carrot and celery sticks and a bag of Munchos...in honor of you. :)

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 4:34 PM

At home: buttery, salty, air-popped popcorn and milk. You fill your mouth with popcorn (don't chew or swallow), then take a swig of milk. The popcorn melts in the milk.
It tastes kind of weird. And it's a soggy mess. But somehow the cool factor from when I was a kid just doesn't quit. I've tried it with Pepsi, and it's a bubbly, fizzy mess. A Pepsi-up-the-nose kind of mess.
Also, can someone clue me into what the hell an Icee is? Never heard of it.

Posted by: Pea at May 7, 2008 4:35 PM

Julie, actually that's (WaWa) really more of a PA reference. I believe there are some in Jersey. And MD has a few--in fact there's one in the city where my mom lives--but once you head north of that, most folks in the North Easy, have no idea what a Wa Wa is. Although 7-11 is my convenience store of choice (and there are few where I live now, hence the lack of cola Slurpees in my life--which is probably just as well), I do have a special place in my heart for WaWas because of associations with good PA friends.

Posted by: tamatha at May 7, 2008 4:36 PM

i have simple needs: Junior Mints!

but if i'm at home it gets more complicated. I love popcorn in vanilla ice cream, stir it up really good. num num. salty and sweet at once.

Posted by: Nathaniel R at May 7, 2008 4:39 PM

Also, WaWa is such a fabulous name.

Pea an Icee is like a Slurpee, just not as good (in my personal opinion--of course if Slurpees just came in "fruit" flavors, I'd probably be less enamored of them as well). You know, frozen flavored sugar water.

Posted by: tamatha at May 7, 2008 4:39 PM

Hee, true Tamatha, you wouldn't find a precious WaWa in Boston or even in western PA. So sad.

Posted by: Julie at May 7, 2008 4:43 PM

Julie, you are so lucky to live in that area. Philly is a great city for art and history and the BEST Italian food ever made comes from a little place in South Philly called Io et Tu. I wonder if they are still open. (Yeah, this is a little off topic, but let's just say I would smuggle their lobster raviolli into a movie anytime.)

Posted by: Brigette at May 7, 2008 4:45 PM

home-anything mr. bunny puts on the grill, lots of three generations (i can't spell it correctly) tequila for me, and hopefully something yummy from the bakery.

Tamantha, I also have a thing for the rare "soft fries" at McD's. They're usually near the bottom of the container, but they're sooo good. If Wendy's fries didn't taste like they were cooked in motor oil, I would eat those, too.

Posted by: Brie at May 7, 2008 4:59 PM

I don't eat or drink anything. I just watch the movie. I dislike popcorn, nachos are too noisy, chocolate melts and beverages make you miss the movie. But if I did chose something, it would be Sour Patch Kids or other sour candies.

Julie, if you I didn't enjoy your posts so much I would totally hate you right now. I haven't been able to make it up to Philly in a long time so I have to be content with memories of meals past. Everything I have ever eaten there has been fabulous EXCEPT the desserts--they are only so-so. That is the only weak spot on their otherwise outstanding menu. When tomatoes are in season, I totally recommend the tomato cucumber salad with big gobs of fresh mozarella. Oh, and the complimentary marinated cucumbers? Gaaaaaahhhhhhh Yeah, now I have totally gone off in left field. Sorry. *halfheartedly wipes drool from chin*

back in the South, I knew folks who used to put salty peanuts in their Dr. Pepper cans. Is this a regional thing, or just a disgusting one?

Both. I don't think it has to be Dr. Pepper, but there's definite peanuts-in-soda action that I've heard of.

Popcorn is all I need, though if I'm feeling really extravagant I'll start things off with those undersized theater bags of Twizzlers. But yeah, big salty oily popcorn. Why trifle with that other crap?

(oh and sorry, Roads, but odds are I'm there between 11 and 1 and sitting by myself in the middle of the third row. You'll never hear me.)

Slightly related -- back in the South, I knew folks who used to put salty peanuts in their Dr. Pepper cans. Is this a regional thing, or just a disgusting one?

Not just Dr. Pepper, Dustin. It's especially loved in Coke. Yes, it's a regional thing...and I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. Every time I see one of my coworkers do this, I vomit a little inside. This is not restricted to salty peantus, by the way, but also to boiled and roasted peanuts...hence why you have so many people walking around, selling them by the pound.

For movie night...I just stick to popcorn. Sometimes I'll eat a full meal when at home, but I never buy anything from the theatre. Unless I'm with someone, who makes me go get her snacks...AFTER we've already sat down and gotten comfortable.

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at May 7, 2008 6:21 PM

Junior mints, snuck in 'cause the theaters here do not sell them. Which is sacrilege as far as I'm concerned.

Posted by: s. pisaster at May 7, 2008 6:25 PM

the kid's pack is awesome - it's a smaller portion of the popcorn with a drink and some candy for about five bucks. i like it because it's a sort of realistic portion of food, and i hate feeling, well, gluttony at the movie theater.

oh and homemade chex mix - straight from the oven into a bag concealed underneath your parka - with some sort of candy from the theater is the BEST movie snack. ever.

Posted by: nona at May 7, 2008 6:28 PM

Haagen Daz chocolate or coffee ice cream and water. The pints are small enough to fit into my purse and keep the water cold. And with a cloth napkin and real, not plastic spoon. The napkin keeps everything dry and makes the smuggling seem classier.

Dustin, in the South, it is not just Dr. Pepper that gets the peanuts, all cola is subject to it. Packets of boiled salted nuts get poured into the bottle, which makes it fizz, then you drink the semi flat cola and eat the peanuts when you get to the bottom. Couldn't tell you what it tastes like, since I haven't tried it, but it is done.

Posted by: Maria at May 7, 2008 6:28 PM

Take one Chips Ahoy, spread it with peanut butter, add another on top, pop it in a ziplock. Repeat as necessary until full, then take to the movie of your choice. At home, the same thing only with a side of milk so cold my teeth rattle. Also very good dipped in a milk shake...

Posted by: funtime42 at May 7, 2008 6:43 PM

I'm pretty boring when it comes to movie food. I usually get popcorn and a Diet Coke. It costs almost as much as the movie ticket, but the servings are huge, and I can make it last for most of the movie and the previews.

Posted by: rlr260 at May 7, 2008 6:58 PM

My sisters and I only go to theatres near a Target, Rite Aid, or something similar. Archer Farms specialty chocolates, iced tea, nerdssourpatchkidspringleszours and probably shrimp wraps from a shawarma place. We carry big purses. Then we feverishly try to cram all the stuff in our overlarge purses. Doing this outside a theatre one day, we saw a guy breeze past us and stroll on in with a large fragrant pizza box proudly hoisted in the air. Awesome.

If buying at a theatre? Butter soup in a bag, liberally sprinkled with popcorn and a splash of BUTTER!
/Salt to taste

Posted by: that bees chick at May 7, 2008 8:05 PM

Red Vines and Diet Coke FTW! Is anyone else pissed that they're not selling Red Vines at the concession, but Twizzlers? They totally don't compare. Near the theater at home is basically a dollar store where we buy all our goods before going in. Saves us like $500.

Another good combo: Iced green tea and Lemonheads.

I HAAAATE when people scrunch/rumple their chips/candy packets in cinemas. It makes my insides churn with insane anger.

I am very stingy, so always take my own snacks. If I'm feeling healthy (which is rare), then it will be a cut-up apple, craisins, almonds and sliced cucumber. Otherwise, I love going to pick-and-choose self-service style lolly stores and filling an enormous bag with random candies. Then, as you eat them in the cinema, it's this fun game of discovery as you eat, cos you don't know what's coming next.

Once, I stupidly tried to take sushi into the cinema, and tried to drip soy sauce on the end of the sushi-roll, only to completely miss, squirt myself, and then had to sit there stinking of soy for the entirety of the movie. (I was in highschool, and it was my second viewing of 'Ever After', and I loved it so much. So so much.)

Posted by: JJ McCLay at May 7, 2008 9:32 PM

With movies at $11 a pop, it's too pricey to buy soda and candy in the theater, so smuggling is the way to go. One time we bought a $3.50 bag of chocolate something at the concession stand, and there were like three candies in the entire bag. My kid and I laughed at that fact for the whole length of the previews.

One of the theaters I go to had an offer of $1 soda, $1 popcorn and $1 candy. I don't need the monster bucket of popcorn, so I ordered the dollar deal. It came in an 8-ounce soda cup, the kind you get when you ask for tap water. Woo hoo. Who knew movie popcorn cost a dime a kernel?

So there's usually water or canned soda stashed in the Conspicuously Oversized Movie Purse, some of those 100-calorie snack pack things, and whatever box candy Walgreens has on sale. I'm pathologically early for movies and so I bring knitting with me to do during the wait. Nobody digs past those pointy needles to see what lurks beneath.

i'm a little late on this one...i was watching iron man for the second time. i was stuck in the front row the first time around...ugh.

anyway, i never EVER drink at the movies. i hate missing any part of the movie-going experience, so i actually don't drink at least an hour before the movie (i know i'm weird). if you go to a movie with my super anal retentive self, you must be prepared to be there at least 30 minutes early (i prefer 40, but will relent so i don't look like a neurotic fool--all i can say is "i told you so" to the morons i went with on saturday).

the food i usually sneak into the theater are sno-caps or raisinettes, but i have brought andy capp's hot fries before...love those things.

I just don't have anything in the movies. Popcorn is the main cause for popcorn breath, with greasy fingers and cluttered teeth included. I'm also not a fan of watered down soda and candy bars that will make me have watered down soda.

When I'm at home, I'll just have whatever is in the fridge that will make up for fast, light food. Usually, it's a whole pack of cookies.

I'd just like to know why my suggestion for the ACD was never accepted... I've sent an email about six months ago. Maybe it was already done and I don't know...

Posted by: gargumma at May 8, 2008 12:20 AM

I really like those Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites, but the goddamn theater in my area stopped carrying them, and anyway, if they did still carry them, a tiny little box would cost THREE DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS, so fuck that, I say!

There is a Texas Roadhouse right next to the theater in my area, so one night a few friends and I bought two dozen Texas Roadhouse rolls (which are SO delicious, I swear they are made in God's oven) and brought them into the theater with us, hidden away in a purse. That was a pretty good dining/watching-combo experience.

Lastly, what I usually like to do is to grab a used and empty bag of popcorn from the trash and refill it for free! You can get as many refills as you like, and it's all FREE. This is wonderful because a small bag of popcorn costs something like 4 dollars and that is so many kinds of ridiculous. I also do this with soda, but not very often because, well, I don't really like soda.

Well at least I have faith the Pajibians are clean snackers. I go to my local movie theater once a week (or more during the holiday blitzes) and my love for it is like that towards a family member. Yes, I'm a loser. But that's why it personally offends me when every single snack-wielding person arounds me leaves their trash behind at the end of the film. I always hear the exact moment they tire of holding it and the containers hit the floor, spilling their last remnants of popcorn, candy, and soda to stain the floor. My theater's only two years old, but most of its rooms always suffer from that petshop-like odor. Maybe I just live in an area filled with particularly lazy slobs? Lucky me!

On a happier note...props for the WaWa love in this thread. Best convenience store ever. Always so clean, always so fresh. I will miss them terribly when I move out of Jersey.

You know that girl at every movie who's toting a huge messenger bag with suspiciously dinner-y smells coming from it? That's me. It is possible to smuggle in sushi, hamburgers, chinese food, or booze and candy for four people, but not all at the same time. For myself, I just usually get a heavily cinnamon-sugared pretzel from someplace along the way, along with a Coke Zero. If one of my friends-with-offspring invites me to a kiddy movie, I take my revenge... err, thank them for the invite... by baking homemade reese's cup cookies, double chocolate chip cookies, brownies, frosted sugar cookies with sprinkles, etc, wrapping them in tin foil, and passing them to the little hellspawn throughout the movie. Occasionally it does backfire as I had to help corral one friend's 3 year old who did not want to stop dancing in the aisles at the end of 'Shrek'.

Movie at Home: It can one of two ways, 1. is prior to pregnancy: enough liquor that you don't remember the middle or the ending of the movie (having to watch it again the next day) and 2. it sounds really odd, but pickles and popcorn. Don't ask, but it's good.

Movie in the Theater: This is not something that happens all that often, as we are usually movie-at-home people. But when we do go, it's a large diet coke and hot tamales or twizzlers.

I'm with all y'all up for a little nicotine n booze, when at home. Why bother with food when there are plenty of chemicals to make your viewing pleasure, well, much more pleasurable? I especially enjoy this when I watch movies that I know are stupid but are alot of fun to bitch about (much of the hangover theater films would apply to this).

If at the movies though, I like to bring a bag of plain popcorn sprinkled with indian spices. i can't justify paying almost as much as my ticket for a fucking soda that's flat anyway because the dimwits didn't change the containers (this happens alot in NYC).

but if it's a revival or a special event film, al and i will sneak in a bottle of kettle 1 and buy a sprite to mix with it. there's a great revival every thursday in chelsea in which you can see some great classic films, both campy and legitimate classics, hosted by a drag queen who's actually funny. by the time the movie starts, we're trashed. it's, um, fun...

i'm all for sneaking stuff into the theater, but sometimes, if you aren't the sneaker, and merely happen to glance over at the time when said stuff is being revealed, you can see some pretty hilarious eatin'. for instance, during the previews for dreamgirls, the woman next to me had already consumed her theater-bought nachos and large pop. before the movie starts, she whips a hot dog OUT OF HER PURSE and proceeds to devour it. who carries a hot dog in her purse? it made me laugh for about five minutes.

Posted by: nona at May 8, 2008 11:02 AM

A friend and I once sneaked into a theater with a full meal from Chick-fil-A. Complete with dipping sauces, which we laid out on the arms of the movie seats. Not an experience I plan to repeat, but we were young and silly at the time and thought it was hi-larious.

My movie-food menu is popcorn with no butter and a strawberry slushee. It's such a great balance of salty and sweet.

Posted by: Kristin at May 8, 2008 11:16 AM

I worked at a theatre in highschool, and discovered the delicious combination of coke and orange soda. Don't knock it till you try it. Also, you can't beat Gummy Bears for a sweet treat. I typically dissect each Bear - head first, then the arms, then legs, and lastly the torso - it makes the bag last longer.

I'd stay away from the nachos and cheese/hot dogs at the concession unless you're there for the matinee - those things sit on the warmer ALL DAY until they're shrivelled and dry and the cheese has skin on it... BARF.

Posted by: Kelsophecles at May 8, 2008 11:21 AM

I too am someone plain in my tastes- no outre' mixtures of this and that. Still, though, the theaters around here sell almonds (and other nuts, but why bother?) baked with some kind of cinnamon-y sweet coating. It's replaced popcorn and/or plain M&Ms in my movie snack budget.

Posted by: ray at May 8, 2008 11:36 AM

I love seeing all the chocolate mixed with popcorn comments. I introduced my girlfriend to that when we started dating and that's why she thinks I'm brilliant. At regular theaters, we get a HUGE layered butter popcorn (my girl can eat it all herself, no lie) and a giant Coke to split. Some chocolate to eat with the popcorn, maybe some Twizzlers for me.

But now that we're in Austin, we've gotten all spoiled by going to the Alamo, which has a full menu. So it's still a large popcorn with real butter, but now she also gets mozzarella sticks, maybe some chips and queso. I share the popcorn and usually get a pizza or this completely wicked green chile mac and cheese. And sometimes a chocolate Coke float. We never make it out of there cheap, but at least the tickets are under $7. And we can have dinner there, so it's not always crappy snack food. Spoiled, I tell ya!! I don't want to leave Austin just because of this.

At the movies, water (I bring my own) and maybe some icecream - delicious AND quiet. I'm with TK about not wanting to hear the noise of other people eating. At least I won't add to it!

At home, booze of whatever stripe I fancy, and chocolate. And nuts - I love Marks & Spencer's honey-roasted cashews. Tasty, but not so crunchy that I drown out the film for myself.

Last time I went to the movies, the friend I was with brought in her own snacks. To this day, she doesn't get why I thought garlicky hummus and raw sugar-snap peas was not entirely suitable for a cinema. Clue: people moved away from us!

Julie...me, you, tam, bridgette and anyone else need to have us a little get together at the Eagle. The hackerschorp (sp?) is calling.

PissBoy, hee, I think it's spelled hackerpschorr (and I only know this because my sister's friend's dad owns a beer distributor)...and YES. How good was that beer?! I need to buy a case for my apartment so I can watch movies the RIGHT way. Drunk.

Directions:
1) Take one Red Hot.
2) Take one Lemonhead.
3) Combine in mouth. Chew. Enjoy.

Aside from that, it's water from my giant Nalgene, Cadbury Mini Eggs, popcorn with butter, or whiskey and Coke.
Also, grapes are the perfect movie food. They crunch just like popcorn, but you don't get that gross taste in your mouth.

I am such a dork. I totally forgot which comments section I was reading and misposted this:

I would totally love to have a meet and greet with you guys. Sadly, travel is out of my budget as I am closing on my (first ever) house next week. I have not had this much fun on-line since I played Legend back in the late 90s.

Junior Mints. I am, in fact, a proponent of all forms of candy belonging to the chocolate covered toothpaste genre: peppermint patties, after eights, it's all good.
You know what rocks, though? At the movie theatre in Georgetown (I know, I know, I only go there for the movies and for the baklava at George's), they have FUNNEL CAKE. At the movies. Just like the kind you begged your parents for amusement parks as a kid. Funnel cake, people. With popcorn or whatever else. It's effin' brilliant.

I am late to the party here, but back in high school my friends and I were partial to going to the local drive-in theatre (Our drive-in is still going strong and is almost ready to open for the season). On holiday weekends they always have a dusk till dawn special. As soon as the sun went down they start showing movies and keep going until the sun comes up. It was great. And cheap, since they charged by the car load instead of per person. Anyways, we'd always make a trip to the local bulk food store to buy a wide variety of cheap junk food, stop off for some fast food, and then we'd pick up some booze. We'd smuggle it in, along with a bunch of blankets and pillows (all the better for smuggling contraband junk food under), only have to pay 2 or 3 dollars apiece to sit there and watch an entire night of movies, and get good and drunk. In between movies though we'd always make trips to the concessions booth to buy fries and gravy or soggy nachos.
When watching at home, my perfect storm of movie junk food has always been either super salty/greasy regular potato chips (usually the super cheap store brand, as they're always saltier and greasier) with plain hershey's milk chocolate, or barbeque chips with milk. Not together, just a handful of barbeque chips, followed by a chaser of icy cold milk. To this day that's the only way I can eat barbeque chips. It's the same thing with cake...I always need milk with my cake.

Hello.

My name is jM.

I am a smuggler.

Not only that, I'm also exceedingly good at it. I have smuggled in everything from soup, to gyros, to Thanksgiving leftovers. Usually no one is the wiser until the lights come on to reveal me holding my cutlery (yeah, classy like).

my best friend and i snuck a jumbo sized bag of blue razzberry blow pops, 2 dr. peppers, 2 cactus coolers, and a grab bag of chocolate into REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.

everything but the dr. peppers (our personal heroin) and one blow pop remained uneaten.

There's a great cheap movie theatre near my house that still uses real butter on their popcorn. And I can get a movie ticket, pop and popcorn for $8. And they have this awesome sour cream and onion powder to put on the popcorn.

Last week, I brought hand-pulled, co-op-made mozzarella and baguette to the This American Life event. It was great.
