Your First Look At The Boys Of The Hunger Games aka Jacob And Edward, The Sequel

Am I crazy or is Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) looking a little Alan Tudyk-y in that photo? A mite Tudyk-ish? I’ve never noticed the resemblance before but, then again, Hutcherson (an actor I quite like) has never been blonde before. Liam Hemsworth (Gale), on the other hand, looks like he fell out of Yggdrasil and hit every branch on the way down. (I made a Norse mythology joke, you see, because his brother played Thor in that movi-OH NEVERMIND.) What I’m saying is it looks like Chris got the lion’s share of the god-like genes in the Hemsworth family. What do you think? Do these boys match the image you had in your mind when you read the book? Are you more excited now? Less? Team Gale or Team Peeta?

And for those of you who haven’t read “The Hunger Games” or feel too old for this sh*t, here’s the new poster for the Clooney-directed political film: The Ides of March. A serious and mature film for serious people. I’d like, if I may, to spark an intellectual discussion about this poster which befits both my age and stature. OMG, Team Gosling or Team Clooney??!

Joanna Robinson is serious about Hutcherson. She thinks he might go places.

Much more a fan of Hutcherson as Peeta now, maybe less so with Helmsworth as Gale. Really need to see both speak and try to be the characters to judge. Glad to see Hutcherson bulked up along with the dye job, even if it was more minimal bulking than the character is described as having. We shall see.

Team Gosling. All the way.

Posted by: dmbmeg at July 27, 2011 4:08 PM

Team Finnick and Team Baby Goose.

Posted by: michaelceratops at July 27, 2011 4:09 PM

I see Hutcherson's been working out. He definitely looks more like the Peeta I'd envisioned. Team Peeta, all the way!

And Team Gosling. Like there was a doubt!

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 27, 2011 4:11 PM

Team Finnick

Ooh, good one. Team Cinna!

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 27, 2011 4:14 PM

Jesus. Look, world, I have no idea if these two ass-peddlers will be good in their respective roles and I'm tired of thinking about it.

As for the Hunger Games news, Gale looks more authentic.

Posted by: Kballs at July 27, 2011 4:14 PM

Acting-wise, I'd go with Team Gosling. Looks-wise, Clooney.

Posted by: Todd at July 27, 2011 4:18 PM

Who cares about those hacks up there, I'm having sexy thoughts about a Baby Goose/Clooney hybrid.

Posted by: Dorothy Snarker at July 27, 2011 4:19 PM

... the fuck? Who are these people? I haven't read these Hunger Games books.

Yeah, anyway, give me a Baby Goose/Clooney sandwich!

Posted by: MM at July 27, 2011 4:22 PM

Ok, there's obviously some sort of Photoshop magic going on in that photo because Hemsworth is way bigger than Hutcherson. Also, Peeta isn't supposed to be that buff. I'm not a fan.

Also, you crazy. Liam is just as fantastic looking as his brother.

Posted by: Mel C. at July 27, 2011 4:24 PM

What Mel C. said..
I know movies are magic and all, but Hutcherson is as tall as Miley Cyrus (so he is 8-10 inches shorter than Hemsworth?) which makes this picture jarring. This is going to take some Tom Cruise-style stilts and suspension of disbelief.

And yes, I just took 5 minutes out of my day to look up how tall a bunch of teenagers are.

Posted by: hattie at July 27, 2011 4:48 PM

mmmmm Liam Hemsworth. I think he's hotter than his brother or they're the same, whatevs it's awesome eye candy.

First glance I was surprised and concerned about Peeta's hair. He also seems more buff than he needs to be, considering how much he needs to be saved.

Gale looks good. Like he's been climbing trees all his life. OH WAIT he has.

I need to see a trailer to pass some final judgement.

Posted by: kilmo at July 27, 2011 4:50 PM

They both look pretty good...and Peeta is supposed to be stocky/medium build from carrying around bags of flour and stuff. Gale just needs to untuck his shirt, he's not that damn square.

Cosign Team Finnick. I heard a HORRIBLE rumor that the producers were trying to cast L'Efron for Mssr Odair... ::sob::

Posted by: Donut Plains at July 27, 2011 4:59 PM

*Mssr = Monsieur
gah!

Posted by: Donut Plains at July 27, 2011 5:00 PM

Casting my vote for Team Finnick! Mmmm, Finnick.

(If that rumor about Efron playing him is true...I will kill someone).

Posted by: sonk at July 27, 2011 5:23 PM

They look pretty much perfect to me... I thought Peeta was supposed to be strong, broad-shouldered and square-jawed, so I don't see the problem -- Gale's the one who's lean and agile. (And uh, Team Peeta all the way. No question about it.)

Posted by: Thijs at July 27, 2011 5:26 PM

Did some of you read a different Hunger Games than I did? Peeta's described quite a few times as being stocky and very strong. Suggesting this actor is too buff to play Peeta is kind of strange.

In any case, he looks perfect. Not sure about the other guy but then I was never too impressed with the older brother's still photos and he looks magnificent in motion (especially in A Perfect Getaway.)

I hope this doesn't turn into another movie with hysterical, obsessive fans.

Posted by: snapnhiss at July 27, 2011 6:15 PM

I'm just irked that I read and enjoyed The Hunger Games and am going to be punished by enduring all these Twilight comparisons.

Yes, Peeta requires saving, but it wasn't because of a lack of strength. It was mentioned several times in the books that he has some brawn.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at July 27, 2011 6:22 PM

If I must play your little game, though, then I only have one answer: Team Johanna.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at July 27, 2011 6:23 PM

Look at the little cutie pie they chose for Rue.

Okay so I just heard from someone what Hunger Games is actually about, and it just sounds like an American remake of Battle Royale.

Posted by: fracas at July 27, 2011 6:43 PM

The Hunger Games is f'king tops, Katniss rules the world. Team Peeta all the way, Gale only ever brought her down. And if I may, Josh, how you doin'?

Posted by: Laurie at July 27, 2011 7:20 PM

The whole Hunger Games/Battle Royale thing has been so thoroughly picked apart on the Internet that I no longer am able to tell if the comparison is a genuine complaint or merely a case of trolling. For my serious response, though, I'd say that they share the same basic premise but differ in scope and focus. A good story is much more than a premise, else we would be long past reusing the old boy-meets-girl/boy-gets-girl/boy-loses-girl/boy-gets-girl-back tale. You might as well throw out 28 Days Later because Night Of The Living Dead exists or ignore all vampire stories because Bram Stoker beat them to the punch.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at July 27, 2011 7:21 PM

I guess I'm late to the conversation then, because I didn't know the comparison had been made. I didn't know anything about Hunger Games until a friend talked it up last night and it sounded very similar to Battle Royale to me. I was curious what people who read both books thought about them.

Posted by: fracas at July 27, 2011 8:00 PM

I haven't read the Battle Royale novel. I've only read the manga and watched the movie. Battle Royale is much more contained within the competition itself and focuses on the moral challenges therein. Hunger Games has the contest as its central event but deals more with the dystopia that has created the games and what happens before and after to the characters who participate. I enjoyed both, and I think there's more than enough room for both.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at July 27, 2011 8:08 PM

Well, I've never read Hunger Games, but as it's been summarily described to me, it reminds me of a book that my sixth grade teacher read aloud to the class (and skipped over the one page where the kids experiment with sex): Rite of Passage by Alexei Panshin.

My memories of it are dim, but it's about a society that lives on a space ship, and they send their young adults/preteens down to the surface of an inhospitable planet to test them, and if they survive, they get to come back. They can either team up and help each other, or not, etc.

My point being, there's nothing new under the sun.

Posted by: MM at July 27, 2011 8:16 PM

Ender's Game has been mentioned a few times as well as Lord of the Flies. Yeah, the themes are similar but the execution of the stories aren't.

Posted by: snapnhiss at July 27, 2011 8:23 PM

And that's all not to mention that on the whole, the "fight to the death" trope is nothing new. The most striking similarity between Battle Royale and The Hunger Games is that both feature children/young adults. But beyond that similarity, as DarthCorleone pointed out, the two stories are very different.

I have read both and enjoyed both. I preferred THG by a slight margin, but that had more to do with how I identified with the protagonist than with the execution of the story.

Posted by: Amanda6 at July 27, 2011 8:48 PM

I loved the Hunger Games books, but I also loved Lord of the Flies and countless other stories along the same lines (though I would argue that there are significant thematic differences). Until I see some clear signs that the studio isn't going to made a royal mess out of this, the jury is still out on whether or not I'll watch the movie. I'd way rather preserve my memories of the book than watch a crappy movie based on an awesome story.

On Peeta - if I remember correctly, he starts out stalky and when he gets in the arena he loses some fat, but retains the muscle - so maybe the photo is him a bit later in the movie?

Photoshop bulge in Liam's nether regions?

[Ew at myself for noticing/asking.]

Posted by: Jessicator at July 27, 2011 10:07 PM

Speaking of Team Finnick (albeit a while ago), I was thinking that Chris Pine would make an outstanding Finnick. He has that cheesy kind of handsomeness that I imgine the character to have. Plus, I think he could do both smarmy and self-deprecating very well. If they pick Zac Efron instead, I'm going to cut a bitch.

Posted by: noodlestein at July 27, 2011 11:38 PM

Team Finnick, no question. Also, noodlestein and I must share the same brain because as soon as Finnick was described in the books I immediately thought of Chris Pine. I've heard the Zac Efron rumor, and it makes me want to bang my head repatedly against a wall.

Posted by: Katiekat at July 28, 2011 1:54 AM

I can’t believe how this Liam got. And how "buff" Josh got. But then again... remember how they photoshoped Katniss face on the cover? Her face looked so thin, and then in a few days Jennifer was doing interviews and her face did not match the one on the cover. Her face was not that thin. Which means they photoshoped her like crazy.

Which let me wonder how much did they photoshoped this cover? Maybe in reality Liam is not that thin and Josh is not that buff. We need to see more pictures. I suppose there will be inside the print version.

Posted by: Shy at July 28, 2011 5:00 AM

Add another to the Team Finnick rooster. Also, Zac Efron?! That is an abomination. Chis Pine would be alright; but for some reason I'm imagining Finnick as this ultra buff Norse-surfer guy with a killer smile so I can't for the life of me think of an actor who could embody that. And can we please on this site at least never compare the _________ that is Twilight with The Hunger Games? Please and thank you. Katniss could eviscerate Bella with a scowl.

Posted by: io at July 28, 2011 7:38 AM

MM is here to shit on the Hunger Games float, everyone. Please have a seat, tilt your heads back, and open wide.

Posted by: Kballs at July 28, 2011 7:56 AM

Chris Pine as Finnick is BRILLIANT. Better than Zac Efron, though I've got nothing against him.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 28, 2011 9:12 AM

I've seen less pussy in XXX-rated movie.

Posted by: Mr. Stitch at July 28, 2011 11:50 AM

Liam Hemsworth is not attractive. At all. Peeta looks very good, though.

Team Greasy Sae.

It is known.
